madkaw
While you guys are sound asleep I will be driving across country in my 6000hp hotrod. It sounds glamorous doesn't it, but I rather be sleeping. Thankfully I get to do 60mph with this trip which makes things go faster and stops a little more fun. I posted a view that I will have at about 6am-yes i am facing east in this picture-I should be just waking up but instead I will just fantasizing about a pillow and rest-hey it's a job and a good one I know. What guy wouldn't love handling 6000hp all night:mrgreen:

Administrators BRAAP Posted August 10, 2009 Administrators Share Posted August 10, 2009 That's COOL! Would love to see more pics... From rail, the country side seems so much more raw, unmolested vs. traveling by road. Enjoy the drive..
JSM
That is a great pic. Very cool, gives a whole new meaning to "Enjoy the ride"! Thanks for sharing. On a side note: My dream retirement job is to work at Disney here in Orlando and drive the train. I've always loved trains!
ShaggyZ
6000HP and handles like it's on rails? Awesome!
dhp123166
Wow, that's awesome. That's something I wanted to do when I was a kid. I worked for Amtrak last year as on onboard cook but it was not the same. Plus you engineers make stupid money...
motoman
What is your 0-60 like 4 mins?
josh817
How many more train jokes can we get? haha I see some dudes who video tape trains and know them by their number. I've never understood the passion for trains, or tractors.

Adam393
I used to love trains when I was a kid (I still like watching them on road crossings) and always wondered what itd be like to be a conductor. Whats it like being one, is it fun? Aside from the early mornings
madkaw
Actually I'm an engineer, but I used to be an conductor. Conductor's job is a little boring on a freight train-until it breaks in half-then the conductor has to get busy. At least I have some thing in my hands to play with all night(the controls), so it helps keep me awake. It's torture when you have a heavy train an no power-then it's a long night. Now you get a 8000ft train and 14,000tons and about 16,000 horses and then things get fun-for me anyway. There is nothing like a challenge to keep you in the game. Sometimes I think about the discussions here about torque and I just smile while I look at the "effective effort" guage on the engine pushing 50k-100k lbs of torque:shock: and that's just one engine. I will try and take some pictures next time I am on an engine that has a locomonitor that I can show the engine rpms, horsepower and torque and finally amps-it's kind of fun to watch the numbers Enjoy a brief ride http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/_mad_kaw_/
big-phil
I escort funerals as a part time gig breaking intersections and such, anyway years back when I was new we were coming to a train X-ing and the guy with me said "go stop that train so we can get by!" I was about to take off, then though WHAT? He laughed a little to much. My buddy Chris works for BNSF and the main offince in Ft. Worth TX
motoman
It sounds like there is a little bov after the horn. Sweet a turbo charged train.

Adam393
At least I have some thing in my hands to play with all night Thanks for the insight, either way it must be quite an experience
madkaw
Actually most locomotives are turbocharged, but I don't get to play with the wastegate.
motoman
Haha sorry right after i posted that i remember that they are diesel. Diesels are worthless with out turbos you don't get any top end at all. That would be sweet if you could play with the wastegate. How big are those turbos? MAG58
They're just little ol' things... The compressor housing sitting on top of this is out of a semi... Turbine side comparison...
