datsundriver87
does anyone have the rear reflector from a 280zx in new to decent condition? ive called msa and plenty of other shops and everyone says its an aftermarket part from the 80's and will be impossible to find. the person i bought my z from thought it would be attractive to spray paint the tail lights and reflectors black and i want to replace them. attached is a picture, for those who don't know (which up until today included me) the reflector is the piece between the two tail lights, please help! roger.svoboda
That thing you have there is an after market unit that people and dealers put on the cars. Bit garish for my taste. All the original car had back there was a license plate light and the license plate. Finding one of those would be a real long shot. You could go back to the plain simple original look (my preference)
woldson
I.....kinda,,,,,liked it,,,,,,don't tell anyone.....shhhh.
Brad-ManQ45
I still have mine and will use it when I get the car back together, but the red has faded - anyone have a cure for that?
MurphyEF
I have one with good red, but a hole near the keyhole. Thats what happens when trying to load two footlockers, a rucksack, and three duffel bags in a z. ha. Now I have one of the basic plate lights that goes over the key cylinder. Ineptitude01
I still have mine, and it's the one with the 'Turbo' up top. I'm gonna be using it, but the bottom half of the Z in ZX cracked off. I might need to get creative with plastic moulding to fix that. Not meaning to threadjack, but if anyone has a ruined one that can donate me a 'Z', I would appreciate (with money ) it very much. Ah, and if you wanna be really garish, consider this: The bottom red '280ZX' panel lights up with the brake lights. I was considering adding a similar arrangement of lights to the top and tying it into the hazard lights... So that when people pull off the road to let you by, and you flash your hazards as a thank you... Too much, you think?
MurphyEF
Actually, I thik the hazard idea would be kinda cool. The only problem I see is having to fab up the reflectors under the yellow part like the red part has. But good news is that I have the piece, like I said earlier, with a perfectly good red part that has the "280 ZX" in perfect, yet dirty, condition. The only thing wrong with it is the yellow part has a hole in it to the left of the keyhole. not quite as round, and a little bigger than the keyhole. Wiring and working bulbs are in it. That is, if you're interested. Feel free to pm me if you'd like.
MurphyEF
Oh, and datsundriver87, you might get lucky with some acetone and a rag. Use a little elbow grease and it might come off. My sidemarkers and tails were spray painted lightly with black when I got it. Guess the guy thought they would look cool. They cleaned right up! BleachZee
I kept one that I was going to throw away... a Canadian is actually going to pay me money for it! Toss it and put your license plate where it belongs
datsundriver87
Thanks Murphyef Ill definately be trying that out here in a few days. yea the original owner of mine painted the tail lights, the reflector and the rear side markers in black spray paint...also started to paint interior parts (and did a horrible job i must add) in white.... did not get the chance to speak to the guy but sure would like to know what went thru his mind. MurphyEF
Yeah, that's about what the PO did for mine, except for the interior. It it's on the outside, paint thinner hopefully will work. Xylene is about the same. Worst case, nail polish remover.
borini63
I am looking for one with Turbo logo on top...I want to install it on my 1982 280ZX T 2+2. If you guys know anybody want to sell his, please let me know.
Heathhh
I actually dont think it looks that bad. You could try mineral spirits or some other paint remover to get it back to before? Just as another guy said to use acetone and a rag. Let us know if it works for you.
hunterzed
I still have mine and will use it when I get the car back together, but the red has faded - anyone have a cure for that? Go to a toy shop that sells plastic models that you put together yourself and buy the red translucent paint that they sell. Paint it on the inside and it'll look like new. I've done this a few times when I've restored cars in the past. Works a treat.
