  1. Jim on my tacoma the first time it did it I hit the starter it didn't even sound like it was connected to the engine. I mean it just ran smooth with no effort, it was so bad I lifted the hood to see if the engine was turning. As the valves would return to their seats it would fire up through the intake manifold and I would hear a change in the tapping of the cams on the buckets (or shims) whatever it has riding on the cam. You could really hear it on the last one, the tapping went away when you picked up that cylinder. It kind of scared me, I had visions of a shim being kicked out my valve cover or a piston meeting a valve. That truck has been dead reliable until then. Run great now but I have a "check engine" light on that I'll have to figure out. Don
  2. It's not a common swap so that is why no one has come up with anything yet. I am a pontiac fan from a long time back but I choose a small block ford to put in. Even with a ford I still have the same problem you do, how to mount the engine. I am doing a lot of welding on the bottom so whats a little more for engine mounts. That thing is going to have a real problem with traction, a real problem with a lack of it. Good luck Don
  3. I have always thought it was the burnt crystals that screwed things up by scratching the cylinder wall. When I think about it I think that metal would be stronger than the sugar crystals so I don't know. Don
  4. The one in the msa catalog is the same one that nissan comp sells but for they charge more. MSA is about a hundred bucks cheaper but is still the same one. Don
  5. I have always heard the sugar in the gas would ruin a engine but I have never heard how. Why I am bringing this up is I bought a 76 280 that wasn't running and it had old gas in it. It had a 1/4 tank and I add 5 gals if gas. It does start and runs until it gets hot, I shut it off. Go to start it the next day and I can bearly get it running. I take off the valve cover and find three rocker arms are off, reinstall the three and adjust all the rest. Runs great, they said that the engine had just been rebuilt but it had problems (loose cam bolt). Meanwhile I had drained off as much gas as I could and poured five gals in my toyota tacoma that had a quarter tank already in it. When I drove the tacoma to the gas station it ran great on the old gas so I thought the gas was dulited enough that I wouldn't have a problem when I filled up the tank. Parked the truck at home and did start it for a week (I drive a service truck home every night). When I tried to start it the starter motor would run but I had no compression until one after another the valves freed up and it started to fire then more and more cylinders would kick in. I ran that tank out and refilled it and problem is gone. That is what is happining to the Z, only its valves are really stuck. Runs great when their not. I really don't know what is in the gas but there is something that when mixed 4 or 5 to one it still messed up my toyota. At least I know my pistons and valves have enough clearence. Sorry it so long but I am wondering. Don
  6. Did anyone think to bring a camera to the party? I mean to make those of us in the rest of the country jealous of the california guys. Don
  7. Interesting the dealer who sold both told me that the miller didn't come with a regulator or hose. If memory serves I think they about $150 for the stuff. The miller was about that above the hobart so the $300 put it out of the range I wanted to spend. The infinite range settings would come in handy welding on the thin metal on the bottom. Don
  8. I have a hobart handler 135 and it works great. Comes standard set up for gas all you supply is the gas cylinder with gas. Comes with a good price and is made by Miller. The diffrence between the Miller and the Hobart is the Hobart is plumbed for gas standard and the miller is not. Also the Hobart uses aluminum wire in its transformers and the miller uses copper which is better. Or more correctly will stand up to a higher duty cycle but I have welded a lot with mine and never have had a problem. When it comes to a torch I went with a propane/oxygen for heating and cutting, for welding see above. Over the last 20 years I have done a little welding but never enough to get any skill. Doing the bottom of my Z has taught me a lot. I work where a lot of welding is done in the manufacture of overhead cranes. I don't build them, I repair and modify/upgrade them. If I have a question I just ask the people who do it all day. Don
  9. What is all that red on his arm and leg? It doesn't look like blood or a tatoo. It also doesn't look like its all road rash, some yes but not all. Just wondering Don
  10. Does it drive at all? 1 If it does not, is the drive shaft hooked up. 2 If it does and it doesn't shift into hi gear or does at a very hi RPM then it is probbly low on oil. Also try a fluid and filter change, it can work wonders. If I remember correctly when it shifts into high gear it locks up more clutches so it needs more oil and if if it's not there it can't do it. Last time I worked on a TH350 was 23years ago. Lone I think the term is "Parking Pawl" Don
  11. Yes he has road rash but I think that his foot is more painful by the color of it. I have only had the skin off ground off my fore arms in a testing crash. With new cams in and jetting the bike with the bigger carbs I ran out of driveway faster. I didn't notice that the front wheel was very light when I went from wide open to hard on the front brake. I think that was my first clue my bike was faster. Don
  12. I got a 83 turbo rear thinking that it was a LSD just to find out that it was a open diff. It has a 3.54 gear ratio which I think is a plus for more speed. The only Z's that had LSDs were 87 and newer. 87-89 were the only bolt in's, This does not include the 88? Spl Edition. Motorsports Auto had the nissan comp clutch type for 700, nissan wanted 800 for it and it's the same diff. It comes in a nissan box with a instruction sheet in Japanese. Don
  13. Ok I think that both will a WC T5 but the one in the cobra might have the 2.95 first gear. Call Hanlon motorsports Hanlon motorsports and they could answear better than I could. Don
  14. The way I did it was heated it on the back side (under side of the car). Heat it with a blow torch or a hot air gun and it just peels off whole. I heated it until it was hot to the touch but not burning hot. Just passing it along Don
  15. Hi welcome there is a shop in Tacoma called Fairlady motors. Doug is the guy and he has done a 5.0L Ford motor in a z and I guess it came out good. Fairlady motors Give Doug a call see if he can fix you up. Don
  16. Mike check me as I may be wrong but I think that the only R200s that came with 12mm bolts were the ones that came in 87-89 Z's. Mine is a 83 and it has 10mm ring gear bolts. Don
  17. Welcome Mucho Mass As Lone said the sbc is pretty much a drop in. What I want to know is what area are you in that Z's are plentiful in the junkyards? Don
  18. Racerx great job I like. Was that car ever finished and if it was where is it now? Don
  19. Thanks for the link Z-Dreamer. Don
  20. Does anyone make a fiberglass hatch for the S30 (71) Z cars? Don
  21. Does Victoria British have a web site? I have tried to find one and got nothing. Don
  22. That look like a new style R200 out of a 240sx ot a S32 z. Based on the subframe I would say 240Sx. If they are a LSD it would be a viscous lsd. When testing for a LSD by turning the axles a viscous lsd axles will turn independently it just is very hard to turn to turn them. A open carriers axles will turn easly. I had a junk yard guy say one was not a LSD because I could turn and he sold it cheaper. He just didn't know how hard I was turning it. Don
  23. Kids learn by their mistakes but this one might be his last if the dog breathes out the back end. My spinger is the nicest dog I have known smart and sincere but she can make up for it by sleeping at your feet, all you want to do is leave. The bad thing is you can't hear it comming, it just sneaks up and surrounds you making the very air you breathe vile. Pleasent thoughts or sweet dreams. Don
  24. Try to contact Art Morrison Racing in Fife. They have plans of a 8pt roll bar that can be made into a cage with their kit. Memory fails me but I think I paid almost 200 for mine. It is nhra legal and a weld in. I know it's money but it would save a lot of time, and it is time that is hard to buy. Art Morrison's web page DP
