Daw I would like it if you could let me know when you are going to the track. I would love to see how a Z goes down the track. I trust that you would be going to pacific raceways (was SIR) to run it and it is right close to my house if you were to need anything. DP

Twenty + years ago I stripped my GTO down to metal and I would not recommend doing the same to a z. When you sand you are smoothing down the metal and when you strip you have to build that smoothness up. Where in washington do you live? If you live in the puget sound area I might able to steer you to some places that could advise you and not rip you off. Don

Did I stop this topic? It was going good until I posted. Don

scottyMiz do you have the pictures yet? I'd like to see it.

Don't get the barbie camera. Even my 5 year old was let down by the quality of the pictures it took. It was bad.

It's great when you hear your project start for the first time and get to take it for a ride. It also is good that we have another ford powered z out there, good work. DP

scottyMiz are you putting that cougar rear in the Z? If so how and how wide is it? I am trying to get all the info now so I can make a good choice in mounting mine. DP

The difference between the Z's R200 and the 240SX R200 is the lengh of the pinion shaft and the side stubs (axle shafts?). The side stubs are a different lengh to engage the viscous coupler in the 240SX R200. The Z's R200 side stubs will go in both of the R200s but depending on the where the (Zs 89 and earlier) internal parts are I would be careful. The ring gear bolts on a 240SX and Z32 ring gears are 12mm 86 and older Z's are 10mm. The newer 240 and z32 side stubs can work I think but the CV cups will need to be cut off and a flat plate welded on for the Ujoint half shaft to bolt on. If anybody has questions I can email some pictures of how far I have gotten so far. I am putting a Z32 R200 LSD carrier in a older 83 housing and trying this out.

If you are going with a pontiac 350 then why not run the 400? I feel it is a much better engine and yes they will fit. All the pontiac engines had the same outside dimension so if a 350 fits a 400 428 455 will too. Some guys on this board have done it so run a search for "pontiac" and you might find some good info. Hey teamcruse racing Ford engines don't stink but if you are talking about ford cars you then you may have a point.

980mak where in Wa are you or where were you stopped? That is one of my fears with my car when I get it running, running into a cop that knows what is supposed in it. DP

Mine is a 71 240 coupe. It fit in pretty good but I have to trim the tranny mounts off to make it fit up tight. I had the body flat on the floor with the front cross member on the floor so I couldn't get the motor any lower than the cross member (did raise up the body to try for more room) because the balancer was real close to the steering rack. My motor oil pan will sit behind the the cross member and about level with bottom, I think. I am not at the stage to mount it in yet. Don

Looks good, you also have done some frame work. How did you mount the motor in and are the headers "shorty type"? Also is that engine color OMC grey? Don
-
I asked the question if anybody had a AOD in a Z and nobody answered. So I or maybe you will be the first. I have had mine in the trans tunnel to see if it will fit but thats about it. I think that if the 300zx had a L6 in it a 302 would fit in great. I don't know you will have to measure it to be sure. Don

I feel kind of stupid asking this but how do you post pictures if you don't have the time or desire to create a web page. I have tried before and I could't get it to work. If you want I could email them, do you have a high speed hookup? DP
-
You stole my thunder. My car got on the rotisserie on sunday. Your design looks cleaner than mine as the metal I used was scrounged from a rack that was torn apart at work but the metal was free. I didn't go off anybodys plans so I guessed on hight and the placement of the center of balance on car and got lucky. Mine is not adjustable unless you concider cutting and welding adjustable but it works, one hand spins the car over DP If anybody wants pictures for another idea I can email them.

Welcome it is good to see another ford person around. Don't believe the chevy guys that fords are hard or real expensive to build. You can get 400hp out of a 302 without too much work, more would more work and harder to live with. If you want more cubes than a 302 can muster a 351 is only a little bigger and it still weighs less than a chevy, 50lbs or so. As far as motor mounts go you can use setback plates like jtr(chevs), you can use motor plates like Terry does (click on members rides), you can do something like scca does or something like alsil? did and has documented. Click search in the forums for ford motor mounts and see what you get. It is pretty easy to get them mounted but you have to think about what you want and then get creative. I will be doing something a little diffrent for my mounts. I am using piece of angle welded to the angle I am going to weld to the frame rail, to make it stronger. DP

I was tring to fit a 302 and a AOD in my Z and was wondering if any else has ever done this? DP

If you want to do it here is one. ebay.com/aw-cgi/ebay|SAP|.dll?viewitem&item=18094184 [url=http://ebay.com/aw-cgi/ebay|SAP|.dll?viewitem&item+18091844545 DP

I'm 5 10" and over 40 should I feel inferior? Or is that why I want about 500hp? Am I guilty of being what I accuse the people who buy bus sized SUV or have jacked up trucks of? I say those people are compensating for a lack of something. Brains, ideals, size of tool, I don't know but it has to be something but I didn't I was guilty. Something to think about.

I need dimensions on 5.0 FI FORD MOTOR...
Dp351zcar replied to Mikelly's topic in Ford V8Z Tech Board
Ok I thought someone would have answered this before I could get back to it today. Understand my motor is in the long block stage now so my measurements are not as complete as you asked for, but here it goes. bottom of oil pan to upper lip of valve cover is 19". Widest part of cylinder heads Is (with out valve covers) 18". The oil pan is 22" long (think of that as the length of the block plus the timing cover). My motor has the 6qt pan but I don't think it is any deeper, it's that the sump is longer. Hope this helps. DP -
Looking at your name, whats wrong with fords?

The guy that will be balancing my 351 told me that if you had it balanced with the flex plate, take the flex plate and the flywheel in and they can be made to match. So you won't don't need to pull the engine apart. If you have a 351 in your z how did you mount it? DP

Is that a tech2 system?

GIVE ME 10 MINUTES ALONE WITH MY TRANNY FILLER PLUG
Dp351zcar replied to a topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Maple Valley is about 10 miles east of kent. Kent is between Tacoma and Seattle and a little way from longview (2 hours?). I don't know what heating the plug would do unless you let it cool before twisting it off, in my mind heating it would make the plug expand and get larger thus being tighter. Now heating and letting it cool might help brake whatever is bonding it in there and help clean the threads. I said in my mind so I'll tell you some people think it's a small one, my mind that is. I do think a 12" pipe wrench with a cheater handle is the way to go. Pipe wrenches are like hammers, it seems most people have one you just have to ask around. I'll be out of town for the next day or two so I'll check in to see how you are doing when I get back and if you are still are having problems maybe I can help on the weekend. Good luck DP -
GIVE ME 10 MINUTES ALONE WITH MY TRANNY FILLER PLUG
Dp351zcar replied to a topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Where in Wa are you? If you are around me I could give you some help as I have some tools. To get a socket on a four sided bolt wouldn't you need a 12pt socket? Divide 12 by 4 and it is a even number. I know 12pts are not as strong as the 6pts but it should work. At this point a pipe wrench sounds like your best bet. One thing about cresent wrenches is if you are using a small one on a big bolt it will flex more than a bigger wrench the flex is what rounds the corners. Good luck DP
