removing wheel wells on the front end..
383 240z replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I've only seen one tilt front end on a z but it was mounted on a bronco II chassis. It was still 4wd and sitting higher than any other z in the world this was at the motorsport show last year did any one else see that thing?? Keith -
Oh yes the dreaded 4-3 down shift. What needs to be done to correct this malady is build your valve body correctly!!! Dont buy the crap B&M is selling as a Super trans kit. It does not fix the problem!!! What you need is a properly programmed valve body just like our beloved Z's you can not change just one thing it needs to be done as a system. the main problem is the exhaust port on the TV valve sleeve is only .029" this does not dump fluid fast enough for hi-po usage. The proper valve sleeve is .071" and is made of steel. This requires a new valve, installed into a properly reprogrammed valve body. The govoner can also be changed with a very simple spring kit. Some thing else is a corvette servo. for max apply psi a billet servo is also avalible.(85% greater then the vette unit) this is a neck snapper. Now that being said this .071" valve will only keep you in fourth from 3/4 or less throttle allowing you to cruise at high speed in over drive. Was not this the reason we put over drives in our cars in the first place?? Cerberus you hit the nail on the head for 700 longevity there is no adjusted a little high or a little low on the tv cable it's dead on or its WRONG!!this will destroy your overdrive clutches so fast if not funny. also the servo in the aux valve body on the later units has a spring under it to soften the apply these like to break on miss adjusted units this little problem will also cause a ghost problem with 3-4 and 4-3 shifting> Keith Sorry for the rant

I need some advice on picking a cam the engine is a 3.1L with a T03/04 turbo and a P78 head and is controlled by an electromotive TEC-II. the car has a Tremec t-5 I'll get the specs on the tires and rear ratio i'f they are needed the car is mostly for the street. The owner perfers TQ down low over killer HP numbers. But would love to see 400+ with 18-20lbs boost. Keith
-
Well I talked to the engine builder and he said tell me what you want and I'll buy the cam!!!! Now All I have to do is pick a cam anybody want to put in their $.02 worth?? it is a 3.1L p78 head with a T-03/04 turbo and EFI. Thanks again Keith

what do I need to pick a gear ratio? The touque band, the tire height (26") and the trans ratio(TH 700-R4) am I missing anything? I what a very fast street car that will run mid to low 12's and still be somewhat drivable on the street is this just a pipe dream? Also I like to cruise at about 80-85 on the highway. I will have two sets of wheels and tires also one for the track one for the street my guess is the 383 will make more than enough TQ so I won't need real steep cogs so that will help with freeway cruising I'm also using a Dana 44M from a 1982 vette so I can get almost any ratio I want Keith

Also Ross the TH-350 does not have a removable tail shaft but the tailshaft length is the same on all 700's Keith
-
The WOT 3-4 upshift valve is a $35 dollar part that you can get at any AAMCO. the Governor is the same on al most all 700's all it does is supply 1 psi of gov. pressure to the vavle body up to 58 mph Then main line pressure takes over. what you need to change is the 1-4 servo piston this part wholesales for $9 if you want either of them let me know (I'm a trans rebuilder in mass) I can also get you the caprice tail shaft that the JTR book recomends GM get $210 for them I can pick them up for about $50 from my hard parts supplier. Let me know if I can help. Keith

So this spray bar is attached to the head? I checked the oil diagram in several manuals and I see the bar in thoses but not on this engine thanks for all the help Any suggestions on who to contact about a lobe profile for a stroked 3.1L turbo motor?? Keith
-
A hole in each lobe? I'did not see that during the valve adj. but ther is also nothing over the cam that I could see spraying oil on to the cam I did notice holes on the cam towers though I have a few spare l-series motors laying about I'll pop the covers off and look for the differences. Lone no prob on questions me on the basics. I'm trained on just about every marque of german and british cars.(that was my paycheck for a long time) but I am also well versed on american v-8's(my hobby since I was a kid) the lash pad term is from Jaguar(old habits die hard) I'll ask the tuner shop about the 2k rpm break in that first fired the motor. They installed the TEC-II and insisted on starting it. Oh well now the fun starts picking a new lobe profile!!! Keith
-
#1 oiling system How do I tell? I'm a v8 guy working on a friends car. #2 yes the lash pads were replaced with the cam #3 I'll have to pull the cam to check get back to you one that one (I did not notice any irregularities) #4 I did not feel any thing on the lash pads with the feeler gauge #5 just a few mostly intake lobes. thanks for the help Maybe this is the time to buy a cam that is matched to the turbo and head what mods should be done to the oiling system? which is better internal or external? Keith
-
I popped the cover on a friends 3.1L turbo today for a valve adj.and noticed a few irregularities. 1) no wear at all on the base circle 2) unequal wear on the ramps and nose 3)a small amount on scoring (enough to catch a fingernail)on several of the noses. This worries me the cam and engine are new. I know the breakin procedure was followed and this thing only has about 1500-2000 miles on it! Any ideas on what went wrong? I know the first oil pump was bad (damned Mellings) but we found that out before the engine was fired (we spun the pump with a drill before firing it ) I'll try to contact the cam grinder on monday just thought I'd run it by you guys first. Keith

$100 to rebuild??$50 to put it on and $50more for labor those are all labor charges!! the parts should be no more than $60 and it should have taken max. 2hours to rebuild (thats with him scraping the gaskets. and how long can it possiably take to bolt it to a manifold? we are only talking about a fuel line and four bolts!! As for the intake if it is put with the right cam and heads Weiland makes a very good intake. Keith
-
I've filled fuel line with sand to keep it from collapsing on tight bends should work with brake line just a thought! Keith
-
If your more than just interested buy the head gaskets and see if they match Keith

Questions on a master-vac
383 240z replied to 383 240z's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Is there a noticabe improvment?? I'll most likly be running mikes SCCA outlaw calipers front and rear. Keith -
Thanks for the info guys the plan was for a c4 rear suspension and an AODE trans for use as a bracket racer.
-
While you have it apart I would install a relay set the extra currant running through the switch is most likely the cause for damage incurred. Keith
-
I would not be so hung up on the "camel hump" heads they were great in their day but if they have a million miles on them and need re-done a set off new heads made with Cast-Ported Technology (GM's Fast Burn for example) or CNC heads(trick-flow comes to mind) these go for about $1000 bucks but to rebuild a set of heads that need 8 exhaust seats (for unleaded fuel),screw in rocker studs, porting, a constant radius valve job(3 angles are outdated) It can run you about $900 and then who many more times can they be freshened?? Just my thoughts, I've been in your position and made the wrong choice and it cost me twice as much as it should have. Keith

the rover 4.0l from a discovery are not hard to get(they leak like a seive though(damn british junk)) there are sources for bellhousing adapters to popular GM trans so that might be a thought. I had a defender 90 with a SBC in it( my first hybrid) but after working for a land rover dealer I'll never own another one! We had a recall campaign to fix a recall campaign!! Keith
