  1. Ha! See and I thought it was the other way around. I thought I was one of the few college aged kids on here in a sea full of 40 yr olds and up reliving their childhood. Cool! Tho, the older crowd is a lot of fun as well. Its nice to see this brings us all together!
  2. So I got the sucker home She really needed a nice bath... Me being home by myself with a car with no means of coming or going on its own, not to mention the lack of brakes, I had to let it off the trailer using ratchet straps! Now to get that blown motor and tranny out of it Two of my good friends doing the dirty work while I play photographer! Thanks guys! You definitely made life easier! Motor out, and she wants out of the garage! Who can blame her? She has been stuck in the garage for waaaaay too long! So with the weight of the iron straight 6 and the transmission gone, she has this 50's gasser look, you know, the nose pointed up towards the sky... It makes me wonder... maybe I should build her like that... it would be different, thats for sure! Damn you Hotrod magazine for putting ideas in my head! So..... any takers? Cause I really have no idea what I am gonna do with it! LS1 and T56 come tomorrow!
  3. I couldn't agree more! It took me 5 years just to get it out of the barn at my parent's house!
  4. I spent 50K on college! Yea..... I wouldn't doubt this getting that high or more!
  5. absolutely! This is going to be one hell of a learning experience!
  6. So I went down to Georgia some 6-8 years ago to get a 1978 280z 2+2 that had a perfect frame. On the way down I blew the tranny in my pickup, had to get that fixed. I finally get there and pickup the car. On the way back up I blow out a tire, and the condition of the other tire looked about the same so I bought new tires for the truck and some for the Datsun while I was at it. I get lost in DC and the tow ball breaks on the highway. I had to find another one at 1130 at night. I drove over the GW bridge just to come back over the Tapanzee which cost me 40 bucks! "Car in tow" she says! Anyway, I've been broke ever since. Tranny $800 - I didn't mention that they fixed it wrong and when i got back up here my step dad fixed it again! hotel rooms $400 gas $350 tires $400 tow ball $20 uhaul trailer $110 a 1978 Datsun 280z 2+2 with no frame rot - priceless no, not really $700 Expensive trip Then I realized that if I am going to continue going to school my 89 chevy blazer (fullsize) getting 8 MPG isn't going to cut it. New car 2000 z24 cavalier $8000. I get into that, motor swaps, nitrous, supercharging, suspension, stereo, blah blah blah..... Bought a house $207,000 So recently I realize to myself that I am dealing with the wrong platform, and I decide, what the hell, I have some cash saved up, why not play a lil bit. This is what I got about a week ago on ebay, funny enough its in Georgia, but this time they can ship the fuckin thing! I have the same truck but I am not going thru all that again! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190144430509&indexURL=4#ebayphotohosting 1999 LS1 and Tremec T56 6spd tranny, comes with wiring harness, ecu, pedals, master cylinder, and a hefty shipping bill but totally worth every penny! It comes with a ported TB, LS6 intake mani, spec stage 3 clutch, short shifter, headers, and an aftermarket cam shaft (i have no idea what the specs are nor do the yard that is selling it). I'm totally excited! Now I gotta get the poor Z out of my parent's barn in NY and into my garage in CT. Here she sits, in the same place she has sat for the last 5 years... My bro's project thats been sitting next to it for the last year and hasn't moved either, yup, its a golf... well.... it was.... I love my step dad and his many many toys that made this soooooo much easier! Its finally out of the garage Upon her chariot she waits to head off to her new home It looks as if I just unearthed some buried treasure! The motor and tranny are to be here on Monday! thanks Guys!
  7. oh man! Thats exactly what I want to do to my Z but I doubt it will ever happen to that extreme...
  8. Yea, the only thing I know that doin the whole coolant swap will do is crack aluminum blocks... This I know...
  9. noice! I can't imagine that this had changed too much thru the next few years until the 79 zx started up, could it?
  10. The stock hoods weigh a ton, and the passenger side seat is a decent amount as well. Also, I know you said you didn't want to get into the motor, but what about compression? or timing? different head gasket (different thickness)?
  11. where is the jaw dropping smiley??? I ask you! looks sick, I like the black engine bay! The real trick will be to keep it that way! That strut bar is sweet! Really stands out against all the black! I like it! What did you end up using for engine management and how did you tie it into the Z? what radiator did you end up goin with?
  12. when I saw this post originally I was expecting some jacked up truck frame with a 12 inch lift and the Z body sitting on top of it. Where you can see the frame under the body.... I was thinkin what a waste.... then I checked out the video, holy crap! thats freakin sweet! It still looks like a car! and totally badass!
  13. wow..... I'm lovin it! Lucky bastard! That last pic looks like it was taken in the 70's that pretty cool! Congrats on the accomplishment!
  14. I'm not so sure the small amounts of weight reduction you have done is really going to cut it. What about bumpers, front wheel drag from large sized front tires. passenger side seat. what about gutting behind the dash? I can't imagine you have an AC system on it. The parasitic drag of the water pump probably doesn't help either. Fiberglass hood? Sound deadening removal? Good luck!
  15. Congrats man! It must feel awesome, what an accomplishment! I can't wait to feel that! Mine has been sitting for about 5 years. Not a day goes by that I don't think about it! I'm beginning to fiend now that I have the motor and tranny on order. Now quit teasing us and get some hardcore videos up here!
  16. dear dawg man! those are some crazy pictures. I'm going to pick up my Z from my parents house hopefully next weekend. I hope its not anything like I have seen here! I'm just about ready for my LS1 swap! I got it from the west end of Georgia and rust doesn't seem to be much of a problem there but its been sitting in a barn for the last few years waiting for me to get my cash together. LS1 and T56 are on their way up! I know it needs some work but dear gawd! Anyway.... Here are a couple pics of my 91 pickup and my first cheesy patch job ever. I had to do this on both sides and now the rear fender wells are goin! Typical chevy but I love the truck!
  17. yeah, about those 6's, I was thinkin about that later on after I posted and was like DOH! What could that formulate into 1/4 mile times? That procharger, wouldn't you still want to intercool that, I mean, even tho its running on a belt instead of the exhaust fumes, its still gotta get hot, right? Maybe a bit of methanol injection could cure that. I know 10 lbs on my roots keeps cool with a bit of methanol. IDK Scott
  18. seriously man, your setup, and this goes for everything and anything, is only as good as its weakest link. Go for the gold, save a few more pennies and get that thing out the garage! Scott
  19. I would personally skip the vortech and see about getting the procharger under there. Procharger is much better built and I think its about the same price if not a lil less. titanium - your stock block should be able to take lower boost settings, hell, you could get it into the teens with the right tuning. Jack46 - you really think you can get a 450hp car into the 6's??? At 2500lbs? If you can do that, you can do anything. I know 740 hp civic hatches that weigh less than that running 9s. Scott
  20. I had a similiar issue with my chevy pickup, it would shift right thru 1st gear almost as if it didn't exist. Turned out that the torque converter was bad. I would also check the throttle response and as said before, if it was because the stock fuel lines were too small, you would have more problems at a higher RPM level with fuel breakup.
  21. thanks guys, I am definately going to need all the info that I can get for this. Of course, I gotta get the car out here to CT and get a garage too. So its gonna be a while, but definately needing info before I start. thanks Scott
  22. Hey guys, I am a definate NOOB when it comes to datsuns. I have had mine for the past 3 years with a dream to put in a small block 350. Every once in a while I will go into my garage and look at the car, covered in dust and filled with junk and imagine it. Anyway... my buddy just got a 05 vette with the LS2. Now I saw that there was a post with a guy who just got an LS2 from a GTO and there are some obvious problems. I have the JTR book and drool over it all day long. Now, I have a ton of questions but I am going to start with the basics. 1. whats the deal with a computer system? Is it just a bunch of wiring to a stock ECU? 2. How hard is it to convert it to a stick from auto? 3. Will the tranny from a GTO or Vette fit in the datsun? 4. How about that rear, is it goin to hold the power well? 5. Can the chassis hold the power? (My frame has NO rust) 6. Is it the same mounts that can be purchased from JTR? 7. What kinds of clearance issues am I goin to run into with the motor? thats really all that I can think of for now, when I think of more, I will ask. And if anyone can think of anything else I should know, be sure to throw them in. thanks Scott
