  1. My son plays for Oklahoma City 88 "Titans". We came in 2nd last year in state. We have been traveling to Texas for years. Even when my daughter played Classic years ago. She now is on scholarship with University Central OK. Soccer. They won the "Lone Star Conference" (named after you I'm sure ) for divison 2. But last week lost to Colorado "Metro" university in the Regional finals. Plano; Austin and San Antionio always have great competiton . To improve you gotta have competition! Those kids are my true accomplishments! Len
  2. Richard With referance to "quit while your ahead" Well if I did that then I would still be driving a stock 280ZXT with 7psi. of boost . "Shadetree octane boosters can be detrimental to engines health". Understood; so is excceding 6000 rpm. If properly researched that xtra 1000rpm (from 6000 to 7000) can really be FUN! . That's what I'm trying to do ask questions. "Higher octane levels will not raise boost" That's what I'm trying to find out. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HIGHER OCTANE? I'm searching here guys: Since higher octane levels cause slower burning then retarding timing (which will also help detonation) Will enable a more complete burn causing more power? Also allowing a person to increase boost safely? But still wondering if higher octane would increase boost by itself with no other changes. I remember my stock computer advances and retards timing to a certain extent so that is not a constant. Concerning BOV and POV NOT being the same thing UNDERSTOOD. Sorry I guess my wording in original post insinuated I was ignorant to the difference between the two. I was thinking out loud concerning next thing I may change on my car. Although I do like the safety of my POV. I guess I'll just add another washer to allow increased boost. Further I like the benefit of my BOV increaseing longevity of my old turbo; wonder why Datsun didn't install one in the first place! "Higher octane isn't going to give you more power....better economy or anything else" THEN WHAT GOOD IS IT? The post I'm refering to "Shadetree" mix was in Misc. tech section of our HybridZ where bastaad525 and Night_rider_383 really opened my eyes (thanks guys "Anyone heard of using These for boosting octane?". I like it because it sheds light on "higher octane" WITH SUBSTANTUATED research quoting from Richard Lassiters book "How to Mix your own home brew" along with a referance to the Hot Rod Website where people have been using said "Homebrew" for 5 plus years with benefits and no noticable side effects. Its good reading; all of us should read it. Sounds like they know what they are doing. With all the great knowledge I have gained over the years from this website. I just wanted to hear input concerning my original question "HOW DOES HIGHER OCTANE EFFECT TURBO?" Oh yea Mudge I see you have been doing your homework. That's basically what I found in Hot Rod website. I was able to purchase laquer thinner cheaper by calling around to paint stores and asking how much to buy before getting a price break. I found I could buy 5 gallons for $16 ($3.20 per gallon) I agree concerning N/A being pretty cut and dry. I'm trying to learn more and more about these turbos. I guess as with everything. Be open minded enough to absorbe all; then keep what is useful. Discard what is vague and unsubstanuated. Thanks for input guys Len
  3. After reading a post concerning mixing some "shadetree" octane additive. I had some Laquer thinner, trans fluid & Desial fuel. So I mixed up a batch . Put in about a quart to a full tank of 93 octane. Drove my car (I listed the mods I just installed on my car in the "I'm telling ya; WOW!!!" Hybridz section). I know higher octane helps avoid detonation. But what else? For example when I usally got on my Z my boost was around 12/13psi. It seems with the higher octane my boost increased to 14/15psi. causing my modified pop off valve to blow. I figure I need to eventually remove the pop off valve since I installed a 1st gen DSM BOV valve. But what other effects does higher octane?
  4. Yasin; Go for it you will be glad you did. I first worked on the 3" exaust. I ordered the 3" mandrell 180 degree bends thru J.C.Whitney then I had a $80 cut off miter saw I bought at wholesale tools and a wire feed welder. I first welded the exaust so my lousy welds wouldn't show under the car . Then I worked on the 2 1/4" I/C piping (exaust pipe I bought at Summit since they sell 180 degree J bends). By that time my welding was getting respectable. I also grinded down the welds and painted piping black. That exaust(and 2 1/2" DP) really helps the flow. It completes the whole intake and outgo of things! . Hey! Scott your right! I travel to Dallas for my kids soccer alot. Although I don't know where Cedar Hill is? Let Me know when you come up to OKC and I'll give you a ride! Len
  5. Just finished diving my 83 280ZXT after staying up last night till 2 am finishing up my upgrades. WOW! Ten months ago I parked her basicly because she leaked oil. I had just put in the 370 Mercur injectors and the Dawes boost adjuster & A/F meter. At that time just those mods really woke her up! After healing up from body injuries. I finally started back to work on her last month. 1. Resealed Oil Pan 2. Installed new O rings and gaskets on Power steering rack. 3. Installed 2 1/4" piping and NPR I/C. 4. Installed 240SX TB ported front of intake and fabbed the 1" spacer plate. 5. Installed 1st gen DSM BOV and plumbed it into AFM to Turbo hose. 6. Replaced lower front body parts due to previous owner cleaning out to many ditches. 7. Fabbed 2 1/2" New SS DP Along with welding up 3" exaust and Dynomax muffler. After all that and such a long downtime I was afraid once complete she wouldn't run right. I was Wrong! She started right up! After dialing in AFM and adjusting new TB idle screw. She ran smoother than before! The exaust sounds just right. Just a low throaty rumble not to loud or to quiet just right. When I got on it she pinned me in the seat! I then realized the boost switch I had installed (allowing me to choose stock boost 7 psi. or top boost of 13psi) was on stock boost. When I switched to max boost she really started to dance! No leak in the power steering rebuild. Stopped the leak from the oil pan but now I see my timing cover around harmonic balancer is leaking. I've heard at times the seal around harmonic balancer wears a grove in balancer and need to check if there is a sleeve I could install on balancer to fix. Bottom line I'm just happy with the outcome. It turned out better than I thought. Maybe all these mods installed all at once as compared to one at a time really made such a drastic difference. I LIKE IT! Thanks guys for all your input (and allowing the purchase of spare parts from some of you) allowing me the knowledge to accomplish this.

    Downpipe???

Scottie is big time right! Easiest way is to use your existing flange and trace it. Hey if you have a stock 280zxt turbo. I'll sent you the piece of cardboard I traced my original DP flange before I got the SS one from Scottie. By the way; Scottie I was able to enlarge diameter of the flange you sent me from the 2 1/4" to 2 1/2" so the exaust pipe I cut fit in without crimping the 2 1/2" down to 2 1/4" and the flange bolts still install without hitting pipe . Gotta get car running to find out!!!!! I'm chomping at the bits!!!

    Downpipe???

Cody I'm sure you will have no problems. You do need to fab the Flange that bolts to turbo using a milling machine. Then If you use Stainless steel you will need to make sure your rig can weld SS. Or if you don't mind the looks you can just build it out of mild steel. I'm dying to see how my DP and 3" exaust I built will sound. But first need to finish replacing bottom skirts on my Z. Then finish 240SX TB install and I/C piping for my NPR I/C. I getting there slowly!
  8. Yasin After reading your reply. Looked and saw my three grounds mounted on my intake from the same wiring harness the TPS female plug was situated. They weren't allowing the lenght needed to connect the plug. By golly your right! I cut back some of the shrink wrap. relocated the three grounds all together on bolt closest to TPS and wala. Thank you for your insight. Dang sometimes I get so caught up in things, I don't see it when its stareing me in the face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Thanks for the reply Turbobluestreak . Since the TPS plug portion on the 240sx TB is positioned horizontal to TB with plug in direction of air intake. I will need to clip my existing plug and add a few inches of lenght so it will be long enough to directly plug in.
  10. Watch it!!!!!! Now your talking about the Duke! Hey when I was growing up, he won the Viet Nam War!!
  11. Quick questions; Is the 240SX TPS plug identical to allow a person to plug in the 280ZXT female connector into 240sx with no mods? Also is the 240sx TBS plug; facing 90 dgrees left tward the direction air intake on TB? As compared to a 45 degree angle to the right from up?
  12. Tbuck You should be proud! You are going thru that Z the right way. You will KNOW everything will be Right! I also see in your engine bay the main reason why its taking a little longer to accomplish work on your Z from time to time. You have the best of both worlds. Never neglect the "Hybrid" in the engine bay (Tyler). Its not the destination traveling thru this world. Its the path you chose to travel. Looks like you are chosing the path with the most happiness/emotional rewards . That's what really matters as you get older. Also time invested in Tyler (& family) now. Will enable you more time later (not spending time bailing anyone out of jail/drug rehab etc.)So you will have more time to work on your Z. Sorry I get philosofical at times. Keep up the good work!

    Downpipe???

Cody last year I bought from ScottieGNZ a SS flange mount that would fit my 280ZXT stock turbo (about $47). Scottie had to go thru hell to fab it for me along with numerious other individuals who needed a DP for a 240/280 280zxt install. Because the machine shop he used really messed him around. But he came thru; as he said he would (thanks Scottie ). But he doesn't do that anymore due to all the hassels he went thru. I would suggest use your old DP as a template and draw the form of the flange. Then locate a machine shop to fab it using SS. I enlarged the exaust hole to fit a 2 1/2" SS exaust pipe. I then bought from Burns Stainless a 180 degree 2 1/2" SS exaust pipe. Put plate on car. Cut exaust to size you want your DP; and make mark where you want O2 bung. I plugged off my EGR. Then go back to said machine shop and have them weld pipe to flange. Drill hole and weld O2 bung. Then go to parts house and buy a 2 1/2" to 3" exaust coupling and clamp to SS DP. Weld three bolt 3" flange, then connect to your 3" exaust.
  14. Boy that just dashed my thoughts concerning the need to O ring above 18 psi! We got some mighty good engines I must say!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shane if you read this; thanks again for selling me that NPR I/C. Just about have it installed!
  15. Looked in Summit all they had was Aermotive 13101 (which I feared wouldn't reduce base pressure enough). Looked in Jegs; they had the #13301 for $109.99 (real good price). Once I get my Z operational with the new mods. If I can't adjust AFM enough. That AFPR 13301 would be a good next step. AEM has about same lower base pressure adjustability as #13301. Except at a $170 + pricetag don't think so(I don't know if advantage they list of different orfices would be worth the x tra buck either.). If you buy it let us know how it works out. BTW must of come out within last year. I didn't notice it, until you mentioned it!
  16. I stand corrected Sleeper; I misread the original post. In my mind (before my cup of coffee this morning )I was thinking of what max on stock "components" with only the addition of I/C & larger injectors (around 14lbs). Not max with max upgrades on "assessory's" using stock block! Believe your right concerning Shane. I don't remember but did he O ring his block?
  17. I'm sorry PhilanthrOpy; That's a rather personal question, that I'd rather not answer. In fact I don't even mention or discuss it with my WIFE! I would further bet that quite a few HybridZ boys don't "mention or discuss it with their wives" There is one way to possibly recoup your expenses in your venture. Contact everyone who replied to this post. Then threaten to contact their wives and give them the name of our website. So they will truly know where our budget's have gone over the years. You might obtain enough money to build up a couple of Hybrids! But then I venture to say anyone doing this would decrease their life expectancy dramaticly. DEATH WOULD BE SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. As usual there are alot of unknowns, that need to be known. 1. What type intercooler? 2. What size injectors? 3. Did you upgrade to larger exaust? 4. Did you upgrade your fuel management systum or using stock computer? I believe Scottymiz has gone the farthest with regards to maxing out somewhat stock systum. You might read past posts Scotty has made before last spring when he installed his larger turbo
  19. You know guys looking in Summit's catalog I see this "Derale" brand oil cooler DER-15502 (GM 4 cyl/V6,Ford and Chrysler for $69.39 for everything. Would this work? As compared to buying the TD preformance Oil sandwich adapter for (TRD-1313 Chrysler and Ford V8, 1" thick) for $29.99. Then having to buy the connectors etc. to make the old z hoses fit. Or as you mentioned the relocation kit SUM-G4985 for $34.95. This way I'd have the whole setup I'll have to call to see if it will fit ford v8 cause all it says is "v6,ford.
  20. So a Mustang 5.0 oil adapter plate is compatable with the Z? That's great! I guess I would still have to cut off the ends where they would normally mount onto the old Z oil filter adapter? The two hose ends have like a bulb with a hole thru them where I figure a threaded bolt with a hole thru it; threads into the adapter.
  21. Guys I bought an old Datsun oil cooler for my 83 280zxt. I have everything except the mounting plate and two bolts that screw into said plate that installs on the oil filter mount. Any ideas on where I can obtain the mounting plate? I saw in Summit, oil coolers with mounting plates, except the plate is for a Ph8A filter! Any ideas on how to mount it without it?
  22. I paid $2,800 for my 1996 Lt-1 and 6 speed tranny. That was 1 1/2 yrs. ago
  23. Mike I have done more than my share of pissing away my 20's I build my house in 1986 when I was 31 also! I guess we regain our sanity in the 30's. I didn't build a underground house but I did build a house using 6" styrofoam insulation that I average about $170 per month energy cost year round. On a total electric house that's 3450 sq. ft. You see you need to move to Oklahoma construction costs are alot cheaper than the east coast or the west coast where I was born (San Jose, CA.). I also build just 3 years ago my own pride and joy (and lifetime dream)which is a 40' by 60' two story metal building that houses all my junk. Z cars are my outlet. Some people spend money on golf. I enjoy my Z Its a great stress reliever. I don't feel guilty working on and spending small amounts of money as compared to people who soup up a brand new car. Those people I feel are losing site of the goal which is the most power and speed/manuverability at the cheapest price. Along with the creativity this website accomplishes using those restraints is simply amazing!
  24. Guy's I just crawled out from under my Z to write this (really I needed to take a leak!). This post got me thinking. $40,000.00 Lets spell it out out of respect: "Forty Thousand Dollars". If I had that much to spend on a car. I think I would be looking ahead at resale of what I invested all that money into. I'm sorry; I do love my Z. But I know I would lose money if I had to sell her. I remember that; when I dream and get carried away with all the neat things I read on this site you guys have done to your cars. I have to take a few steps back to my reality. I guess I'm going to lose my HybridZ Exec. bathroom privledges for this next statement! I would probably be looking at maybe a vette along the lines of what Grumpy has. If that is to heavy then I've heard of those Cobra Kit cars. I just know back in 1984 when I tried to get a loan to build a underground house. My banker friend said no. He said if they got it back in foreclosure; and they had to sell it. Maybe seven out of ten people would be interested. If you took the same ten to a normally build house all ten would be interested. I feel that carries over to anything expensive a person invests in. Even our toys. I try to think "what if I ever needed to sell this! Life is unpredictable. Len
