  1. id look at the Vette winged pan.. personaly i wouldnt want to cut on the pan at all.. difficult to weld aluminum and its an oil pan.. just covert to rack and pinion no it isnt. LS1 owns the SR20DET. to get a SR20DETto hang with an LS1 you would have to have a massive turbo, you would have a pathetic torque and hp band. in road racing torque owns. and if you put a roots or a procharger on it, its just going to make the LS1 even better. after that, if you wanted to get crazy and have a hp monster that would have a narrow torque/hp band (but still tons bigger than the SR20DET) do a huge turbo LS1. stupid haters pisses me off that anytime anyone puts an LS1 into some japanese car everyone says that *blank* japanese motor is better. all things considered.. its obviously not, otherwise the LS1 wouldnt be the second most swapped motor in the history of mankind, the first would be the SBC.
  2. for the trans just use a regular shifter.. idk what else to tell you. does the LS1 have a stock cam in it? if not now would be a good time to cam the motor and stall the trans..
  3. personaly id buy a LS2 crate motor from GM and then an aftermarket M6 anything else is going to cost you more in the long run
  4. yes, stock ECU dont bother buying a LS1 if you are going to do a forged internal set up. buy a forged 408 (iron block, 100lbs more) or 402 (aluminum block) then buy some aftermarket heads and aftermarket intake. a built M6 or auto is a must also. as for wiring, use a stock harness.
  5. removable sleeves in the block, thats it. LS1 block is stronger. so its actualy a worse thing if you have the LS6 block in there
  6. beautiful... all of it, i wish i could see it in person
  7. not even a valve job, just remove heads and replace the lifters and do springs (which should be done anyways)
  8. LS1 would be my choice, with an M6 you would have about 320 whp and a car that idles smooth, gets 30 highway mpg and sound amazing when you rip on it. should be more than enough to scare you. and if it isnt, cam it, then ew are talking some serious hp. only downside to the LSx swaps is the inital cost (2000-5000), but to get a sbc into that hp level would cost you as much or more.
  9. no it was twards me, even though i somehow seem to have a 240Z and an LS1 and everything required to work for oh... around $4000
  10. ok, NOBODY does that. its either going to get tuned once or retuned a second time, and most of the time a re-tune fee is considerably less he didnt just say economical in his first post. he said he wanted a nice base to start to mod from later. lets see 1200 for a new motor... 500 at least for a trans... 75 water pump.. 150 intake, 150 carb, 100 HEI ads up to be a pretty expensive 260hp
  11. you only need to tune the car once thats $300-500 depending. there is a reason why people give 305 TPIs away. ever heard the saying "you get what you pay for" ? first thing i did when i got my IROC was ditch that 305
  12. a 305 is best used as a boat anchor. VERY limited performance upgrades available. 305 is no diffrent than any other SBC you could use the JTR mounts, can even use them on LT1s, just not LS1s LT1 for 1900 without trans? thats insane, i have one with a trans, new opti and painless harness than you could have for $1900 hell id probably deliver it to you. you can get complete LT1 cars for $3000 bottom line is that if he plans on further modifying the car the LS1 takes a larger inital cost but is much cheaper and less of a headache to swap one motor in a car and have it the way you want it the first time rather than buy a motor, sort out the swap and just swap it out for a better motor later on. if you plan on making more than 350 rwhp dont do anything less than an LS1.. itll cost you more in the long run and be more headaches. this is comming from someone who has worked on several of our SBC cars, rebuilding a 406 and a 350, swaping in an LT1 motor into a car and in process of completely rebuilding an LS1. bottom line, dont skimp you will hate yourself later for being a cheap bastard now
  13. yes, most economical dosent always mean cheapest inital cost, thats what the whole thing about an LS1 is, you dont have to go and run off and buy 1500 in heads becuase your heads suck bigtime if you want to make more than 300 hp on less than 5000:1 compression on leaded race fuel. if you total up rebuilding a SBC with hyper pistons and just a mild build including new heads and intake you might as well start off with an LS1. trust me, i have built both. its better to buy an LS1 you dont have to rebuild than a SBC you have to. more reliable and about equal in cost
  14. um thats why you re-tune it everytime you modify it again. i had my car tuned the way i described it and i LOVE it. i love having no MAF, and i cant wait to put my other LS1 into my 240 and have it MAF tuned with a cam and headers
  15. sooo thats the brake booster thats in the car, i need to know if its the stock 240Z booster or an upgraded one. my car has been very messed with before and hopefuly i got a good booster i dont have to replace... here is to hoping
  16. hmm some questions in there ill try to answer all... use LS1 motor mounts, cut them up and weld them to the frame of the 240.. its what was done to my car. LS1 wiring.. an LS1, given proper fuel pressure and a power source will run OUTSIDE of a car. all you have to do is get power to the chasis, no harness integration. tune the car and have the VATS, EGR, AIR, O2s all deleted and then have it tuned speed denisty, no longer need a MAF. yes, they make a carbed kit. has an MSD box to control the individual coil packs and hooks to the crankshaft sensor. IMO use the stock fuel injection welding in motor and trans mounts for one motor is not going to be any more difficult than for another motor. dont waste your time with an SBC.. step up to an LS1 and an M6.
  17. depends on how much money you have to spend, if i had 4000 to spend id MUCH rather buy an LS2 than mod an LS1, LS2 would be less finikey and more reliable
  18. actualy the LS2 has much more potential than an LS1 just by the fact that it has 243 heads which flow much better than 241 castings of the LS1s. LS2s also have better timing chains and oil pumps. put the same cam in an LS1 and an LS2 and the LS2 will get much better gains, plus it has a sweet 400hp curve
  19. the width of a wheel is determined by measuring the area where the tire seats to the rim. in the diagram you put up it would be the measurement of "outboard flange" to "outboard flange" if anyone talks about it diffrently they are flat out WRONG. my 17x11 ZR1s that i put on my camaro are about 12 inches wide so what back spacing would i need to run to get a 17x9 rim under the front?
  20. sooo i was looking at wheels.. and i am not sure what to do.. will a 9 inch wide rim fit under the stock fenders in the front? i dont want to run flares, but i would like to have a wide tire up front.. also, i dont know if i want to get 15s for all 4 corners or if i want to get 17s.. both have their good and bad for me. i already have (2) 275 17 goodyears and (2) 315 17 Nittos so a plus of running 17x9 in front and 17x11 in rear (car is back halved) is that i already have tires. im not sure if there are going to be any low profile 15 inch tires available though. by todays standards 15 inch rims are tiny. i know i could find plenty of 15x11 slicks for the rear but what about if i want to road race? these would be the 17x9 and 17x11 wheels these would be the 15x9 for front and 15x10or15x12 rims for the rear personal prefrences and experices are more than welcome..
  21. SBC = 1950s tech Gen 3 (LS1, LS2 all LSx and newer GM truck motors) = 1990s tech the best bang for the buck is an LS1.. plus it has soooo much potential, with changing just the cam and valve springs, and having headers through a M6 you have a 450 RWHP car EASY. LS1 into a 240Z is the best swap IMO.. of course by looking at my screen name you can tell i might have a slight bias. personaly i dont see anything better than getting 20+ mpg in a NA car that makes over 450rwhp... im sure someone else has a diffrent answer, but after wasting time on a SBC 3rd gen, SBC 78 malibu and a LT1 malibu station wagon im putting an LS1 into SOMETHING, just happens i found a good deal on my car and i love it already.
  22. holy hell lol, i just wanted to point out that this thread has been brought back from the dead... not once, but twice lol, freaking 6 year old thread, in 3 years somebody should bring it back up again
