Well, I went and looked at it to be sure just now. The actual hole in the head is round. I have a P79 on the car, and it has liners, so I know what those look like. This head does NOT have those, at least not as they came in the P79. The carbon mark around the exhaust port is sort of hexagon shaped, I assumed this was an artifact of my crappy header, but may that makes it a square port? I assumed (possibly wrongly) that the port shape described the actual hole shape, but these holes are definitely round. I left my camera at home, but the head is off the car (and here at work with me), so I guess I'll have to bring it home and take some pictures. I'm off at 3pm Eastern Standard time, for anyone that is anxiously awaiting these pics, so I'll be ably to post them sometime after that. *edit* I suspect it is something like what happened to Speeder's head. That would be in keeping with the previous owner's story that the owner prior to him had just put in a reman engine before the car died...

Aren't those the 432 covers? Smurfed this pic from Dscott's thread about 432 covers for sale in the vendor section:

I had that happen to a co-worker with a 5.0 mustang...axle snapped, and the wheel rolled off drum and all. Crazy. That reminds me of the time the tread blew off my tire at 90mph on the way to get some louvers from Olderthanme in Georgia, but the tire still held air. It tore my rear bumper fascia off on that side. That was an adventure and a half! Never did get the louvers, but I did have a good time in Atlanta. I'm glad to hear you're ok. You lucked out in another way too: I've heard of people getting improper vehicle maintenance fines when that happens too. Good thing one of those hot girls that likes your car was there to save the day!

Guess I'll be posting pics tomorrow...anybody want to buy it?

As a matter of fact, the P79 came on the later models, I took one off a 78, and that's what is actually on the car. P79 has the liners in it, I've got that right here too. *edit* I just looked again, and N42 is clearly stamped on the head, and it definitely has round ports with no liners. This was the head that came in my 1977 280z automatic, but I have no garauntee that it is the original engine (in fact, I was told it was a reman, but I have no proof of that either) since I'm not the original owner.

Should have some nice torque from the 3.1 bottom end. So it's come down to "If this doesn't work, I'm done with it", eh? That's too bad, hopefully this will make the car fun again.

Looks in this one like they've already been repaired, is that a ground down weld line or some kind of epoxy or something right where the rail meets the floor? Also in the top right it looks like a weld bead in the floor pan. Whoever your friend is was brave to get under that car on jack stands in the grass! (by the way, your link took me to the MR2 page, also a nice car!)

I've got an N42 from a 77 right here, and it has round exhaust ports, no liners.

You're just not ready for it yet Olie, that's all. In 10years, everybody will be doing it.

3" intercooler pipe to big? with Holset Hy35??
veritech-z replied to big-phil's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
well, if it's already all 3", you wouldn't need to modify it anyway. In that case, I'd say going smaller than 3" would kind of be a waste of time. I guess I was confused about the real question, too. Are you asking if you should keep your old plumbing and use reducers, or upgrade to 3" plumbing? -

Phil, are you sure you want the bend to be made from silicone? It would seem logical to me that the joint would be stronger if it were made from whatever tube you were using, and then had a straight boot. How big is your throttle body? How big is your turbo outlet? I would think your boost response would be better if you only had one diameter of tube for as long as possible, so it might be better if you had your end tanks modified to the same size as your turbo outlet on the way in, and your throttle body on the way out? Anybody that wants to correct that, jump right in! -
I've never actually seen the glass ones in person...I bet they would look good if you could do whatever that treatment was that Oakley used to do to their sunglasses back in the day? Like this:

Where in FL are you located? *edit* just re-read and saw you wanted an LSD in exchange, and not a regular old open diff..sigh...

Woo...(stretches casually, looks at watch [although Max is not actually wearing a watch, he still looks where it should be]) Look at the time...time to hit the ol' dusty trail....

Where you went wrong was not hiding it in Area 51, like most of the other guys do (although even THAT isn't always safe) http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=113160

You don't actually need to weld it in, not many of the holes go all the way through. Braap did a write up some while back explaining how he would use pipe plugs in the hole, and then grind them down. I didn't do that, I just ground it down, and the spots that were really low I used JB Weld like it was bondo, and then wrinkle finished the hell out of it. I chose to leave my vacuum ports on top, instead of moving them to the bottom like a lot of the guys did.

So evilc, did you end up buying the car, or no?

You may have the wrong ones, do you have an S130 and are trying to fit S30 covers on it, or vice versa? The headlight buckets on the S130 (280zx) are a bit longer than the S30 (240/60/80z). Other than that, I see 240hoke doesn't have any kind of gasket on his, but mine came with a little rubber sealing strip. Maybe there are two kinds, and you have the ones that SHOULD have a strip, but don't?

I'm not sure about that, Larry, I recall I reached my upload limit at one time, so I started using photobucket instead. If something has changed, I must have missed it because I haven't tried to upload in awhile.

Found A Good Place That Sells Hakosukas Etc
veritech-z replied to Corzette's topic in Non Tech Board
I wouldn't say that the 2kGT comes down to it's motor. Yamaha had a hand in it, it was also a 2liter twin cam, much like the S20-cool to be sure, but with the alternatives available, it makes a better conversation piece than powerplant. But look at that car! I would say that anything that gives you performance to match the looks would be an improvement, but i also would never discard the original equipment from something like that. There are certain models that are extremely rare, and you are doing a dis-service to posterity by irreversably modifying them. It would be like swapping an RB into a 432, or putting an MSA airdam on an original HS30H. It may be better according to your personal taste, but the cars are so rare it just doesn't feel right. Just out of curiosity, what's the difference between a 1jz and 2jz besides the number of turbos? -
Here, I'll post an embarrasing photo of my wife so you won't feel so alone (she totally hates this picture of us, it's from our honeymoon, and features my home-made datsun jacket prominently) (also, that's me on the left)

I think you'll see in these pictures that when your car is black, it's hard to tell if the covers are even smoked at all. I have never been pulled over in my z even though it's loud as all get out, and my tail lights are lightly sprayed black, but what you have to understand is that I might have put 2000 miles on this car since I've owned it. I don't want it to seem like I'm on the road all the time and not getting messed with, I just don't drive it much. The smoke ISN'T all that dark, it's not like the old "blackouts" that used to be popular. Something else to keep in mind, the stock Z headlights SUCK big time, and these don't help. They are good enough to be seen by other motorists, but if you are on a road at night with no streetlights, you HAVE keep your eyes on the reflectors, and hope you don't have any close encounters of the deer kind (very common, moreso on the outskirts of Tampa. wild pigs too.) I even went so far as to do the 9004 halogen conversion from the sealed beams, but anything short of HIDs is a waste of time and effort in my experience. If I stumbled across some projectors to do this, I'd do it right now. Anyway, on to the pics (and yes, I'm excruciatingly aware that I don't have the best looking car on Hybridz, but it's a work in progress ):

I got the smoked ones, and I think they help keep the fasteners from really getting in the way. I know not everyone likes the smoke though, but if it works with your color, it's something to think about.
