  1. I had the opportunity to attend the Tokyo Auto Salon for the first time this year, and I was blown away by the sheer amount of stuff, people, and cars packed into the convention center they held it in. I am really glad I got to go, I was supposed to work all weekend but the boss changed his mind last minute. Probably had something to do with the fact that 75% of the squadron wanted to himself included. But anyway this show was amazing, I couldn't believe the sheer variety of the cars there. Granted most were Japanese but they had D1 cars, rally cars, JGTC cars, and even the odd Lamborghini and Camaro in the mix. If anyone ever has the chance to go to one of these shows don't pass it up you wont be disappointed. Here are some my personal favorites. I was never a huge fan of the 2000GT but this one was really well done. Just a Maziora painted Indy car, nothing too special I just really like the paint. The Top Secrey GTR, I wasn't a huge fan of the GTR until I saw one in person now I actually really like the lines. The Mine's GTR, I liked this GTR the best out all the ones I saw that day, I still can't put my finger on exactly why though. Ok so the car may not be the focus of this one but come on it was an F-Body at the Tokyo Auto Salon and they wouldn't move out of the way. I'm still sifting through the pictures I took, I've got quite a few of the two S30s that I saw but I can't find them right at the moment, I took almost 500 pictures. So when I find them I will put them up.
  2. Thanks for the info lifegrddude, now I need to figure out where in the hell they are located so I can go bug them until I get one of those airdams.
  3. Well you've got to figure we drive pieces of automotive history, I get looks and grins from everyone everywhere I go in both my ZX and my rusted out 240. That and you just don't see these cars anymore, the entire time I was in Virginia I saw two Z's and one of them was the day I left. Z cars always stood out in my mind and now that there are barely any of them around they stand out even more.
  4. Whoops look like I had it backwards, large journal for one year small for all the rest. And trust me a small journal 350 runs like a scalded dog we used them in my hobbystock and the extra quick rev made all the difference in the world coming out of the corner.
  5. Maybe I have a boost issue then I just got off the phone with my brother who is storing the car while I'm away (and evidently driving it too). And he said the thing is barely registering any boost on the gauge but it still has enough snort to turn both tires all the way through first gear and into second and that's with the 10" wide CCWs and Kuhmos off my other ZX. I'll have him pull a plug next time I talk to him, but I think I've got a good idea what the car is capable of I can't wait to get it to the track this spring.
  6. I will try to get some pictures, but I bought the car while I was on leave and I am back in Japan so I will have to have my Dad take them which is going to be interesting. It does spool some boost just not very damn much (like 4psi). The car feels pretty quick has pretty tight suspension I am starting to think it is an ex-track day car maybe thats why the steering wheel is a quick detach.
  7. I don't have my whistle at the moment the track borrowed it, i'll get it back sometime and check the compression. Do you happen to know how Isky marks there cams? The only distinguishing marks on it are E30, Japan, and an A stamped on the back. The turbo doesn't spool hardly any boost so maybe the guy figured high-comp low boost was the way to go, who knows. Anyway I only gave 2k for the car and it's in good shape so even if it is stock I think I got a good deal.
  8. I bought a 280ZX off a guy last week and when I bought it he told me it has an L31ET with an Isky cam, 10:1, T3, and a ported P90 head in it. Obviously I was suspicious because high end Z cars don't exactly grow on trees around here, so I just assumed I was getting a stock car and I would use it as a daily driver. But there are a couple of things that are bugging me about it. For starters it has the Non-EGR intake off a 280z, it also came with an intercooler off an NPR truck, as well as a large assortment of electronics from MSD and Jet including one of those old boost timing master boxes. Not to mention the VIN on the dash is from a '81 turbo while the doorpost claims its an early '80. So here I sit with a car that I know little to nothing about and it's bugging the hell out of me. I know there is a no way of knowing exactly what I bought without taking it apart but I really don't feel like it. It just strikes me as odd that someone would spend so much time and effort on a stock L28. So what do you think, something special or stock with bolt-ons?
  9. I've only ever bought two and I still own them one is my DD '80 Turbo Slicktop, the other is a parts car '82 T-Top. And of course I forgot my "other" ZX with the mystery motor. One of these days I'll take the damn thing apart an figure out what it is.
  10. IIRC the 327 only came with a 2.3" main for one year all the rest are 2.45" I wouldn't waste the time with the 327 crank though, if your after the rev get a 350 crank and grind the rods .100" and run small journal rods, or if your really exotic get on of the Eagle rotating assemblies that use a 1.89" Honda rod journal, I wanted to build one but opted for the large journal 383 instead
  11. My vote goes to the clutch or coupler, we had a similar problem with three Whirlpools last time I was on loan to the laundry and we changed two couplers and one clutch.
  12. Thanks for the advice, I am going to try and check out a few spots after work today. Just out of curiosity what should I expect to pay for a complete RB26 or 25? I am thinking as cool as the 26 sounds the 25 is actually going to be better for what I what I want to do since it has the right trans bolted on it stock.
  13. Does anyone know where I can find a junkyard in Japan in the Atsugi/Yokosuka area? I've asked around on the base but no one seems to know where to go. I am looking for a complete RB and misc. pieces off of different Zs for spares and dressup and what not.
  14. I'm almost positive that's in Daiba, I've played it before and it was alot of fun but I'm a little big for a Corolla and I never seem to get put in anything else except for the RX-7 once.
  15. STEAM IS BAD!!!!! Oh wait I'm back on the beach, never mind, had a flashback to the Kitty. Sounds like an interesting project, the one question I've got it where would you get parts? I would imagine 99% of the pieces you would need would need to be fabbed as most steam stuff is huge.
  16. That will work but the rack will still be a power steering ratio which means you may need to crank the wheel over several times when parked which is a pain. I would recommend measuring the rack and getting a correct length one from an aftermarket supplier that was designed for manual steering.
  17. Clear fuel filters are your friend when you need to know if you've got fuel. It sounds to me like you've got a junk pump if it's not even trying to light.
  18. Like the title said my Dad called me and told me that some guy came and dropped of 4 Nissan six cylinders today, he didn't know what they were but he gave me the casting numbers and the part numbers for the bearings and I found out someone in Nebraska has a stash of these things. He also dropped off 4 Brian Crower stroker rotating assemblies to be balanced. I was floored when I heard this, I've heard the TB is a wicked mill when you put it together right but beyond that I didn't know much. The really strange part is that he's building the motors for sand rails that he's shipping to the Mid-East. Kind of a strange project but it was really interesting talking to the guy. I am trying to get one of these in the near future to add to my collection of Nissan motors that I rebuilt and never did anything with. But who knows maybe it will find it's way into a Z that I've got out back.
  19. Man and I get worried when Chinese subs follow the Kitty into the Sea of Japan. I'd be a nervous wreck over there. Stay safe, I applaud you for having the balls to play in the sandbox.
  20. Wow, and I thought I was a redneck.
  21. IIRC the S14 CV shafts are way the hell too long and the diff actually mounts up different. But hey I've been wrong before.
  22. The number one thing that bothers me is the local "streetracers" all run say they run jet fuel in their cars. I haven't had the heart to tell them that it's kerosene yet.
  23. To tell you the truth forced induction never really appealed to me until after I built the L31 for my Z it is the only turbo car I owned at the time at stock it was kind of sad. After I rebuilt it I really came to appreciate that thing hanging off the side of the block.
  24. It's not that the HP bothers me that much I know there are guys making a hell of alot more power than I will it's just I don't know if I trust throwing a 35 year old car hard into a corner. But if I was to do that of course I would prep it first. I think I'll finish the motor first and go from there. Maybe this can in the Camaro and the supercharged VG I've been pondering can go in the Z. I suppose I'll have plenty of time to think about though. I appreciate your input , the Z is always going to be my favorite car but sometimes you have to stop and ask yourself if what your doing is really a good idea.
