383TT Build *56k Warning*
SilentNight1647 replied to SilentNight1647's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Alright after discussing this with my Dad for a good while, I'm not sure the Z is the best place for my mill. My 240 is in decent shape and has had the floors and frame rails replaced by me recently and the only rust that remains is on non-structural parts of the body. But he voiced serious concerns about whether the chassis itself will handle what I am trying to do, the idea being a serious track car with some street use. I think he may be right, although I love my Z to death I don't know if I trust it as far as I want to push it. So what do you think? I am looking at this more from a safety standpoint than anything else. From your experiences is the Z going to be able to do what I want to do or am I better off using the Camaro I just bought? -
Not a really good picture but the only one I have handy, this was taken right after my Dad gave me the Nova, Overhaulin style. As a bonus you can see the Purple People Eater in the backround.

Oops, I guess I'm down to one then I just looked, the engine bay is a 1980, the dash is a 1983, and the b-pillar is a 1979 so maybe that one. I never did understand why the car has three different VINs but hasn't ever been wrecked as near as I can tell so I think someone was just having fun.
-
Hey maybe one of the three 1980 VINs my car has is a ZXR!
-
Damn they actually offered you money for it? All the county would do for me was send me hate mail and State Whip out to my house every other week until I covered the 240z. Oddly enough when the county car show happened I received an invite to bring a car and at the bottom of the page it said please bring the purple one not the blue one. Some people just don't appreciate the classics.

The reason it wouldn't work in Mad Max is because it's a roots blower that have a boost tube that you can pull air though if disengage it. Believe me I thought long and hard about the Mad Max setup and why some stuff would and wouldn't work. It's one of my favorite movies.

My guess goes to a broken flywheel, it shouldn't move at all. That would contribute to you noise when idling. If it is dieseling leave it in gear when you shut it off and slip the clutch a bit the extra resistance will keep it from doing that. My '72 does the same thing. Also get a listening stick and listen to each intake runner for a knocking noise that may indicate a bad bearing, drain the oil while your at it look for bearing metal. Good luck with this it took me 2 weeks to track down a noise in a Mustang that turned out to be a rod bearing.

Curious...Which Income Bracket Do You Guys Fall In?

Military pay ain't great but i get by. -
This may solve my three forward gear problem in the Nova if they can handle big block torque. I guess I have to wait and see.

Can you spot the errors in this news report?
SilentNight1647 replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
I think they were getting at the fact that you can flip the selector switch to full-auto and get 600 rounds per minute. But hey I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. -
My cousin runs a quick change in his A-Mod and I've go to say they are probably the slickest live axle setup on the planet. Very worth it if you wan't ease of adjustibility. I have never been able to run one my class doesn't allow it, but I can run a Winters Floater which is also very cool and is currently being hung under my Camaro.

They used an E30 core which to my knowledge is a pretty standard L6 core (even my Isky has E30 stamped on it), the regrind tag means it was reground form an existing stick probabbly a stock one. As far as the specs go best to call Crower and ask hopefully they will know what it is.

I am probabbly going to go Aeromotive, I can get everything I need for about 800 bucks so why not. I do have a question though, if I want the fuel pressure to increase as the boost comes up what exactly do I need? Will there regulator increase the fuel pressure by itself or do I need the fuel pump controller as well? -
My ZX is the Purple People Eater, because even though it's blue it turns purple at night, and more than guy has been left in the dust after he made fun of me for driving a purple car. The Z is the Blue Devil though I didn't choose it, the car actually picked it's own name when I bought it I found a Duke shirt under the passenger seat and I used it to cover the gap between the sill and the top of my window on the passengers side before I fixed it. So everyone started calling it that because nobody knew what the hell it was.
-
No, the ZX has an interesting wiring setup that makes it kind of hard to tell what you need, but I can tell you without a doubt that you do not need one. Also beware the signal wire it will screw you until you figure out how to hook it up.

383TT Build *56k Warning*
SilentNight1647 replied to SilentNight1647's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I picked up the whole kit for $702 shipped to the shop, that includes the headers, turbos, intercooler, fuel pressure regulator, and all the lines for the turbos but it doesn't include the pipe kit for the intercooler. The problem I would see with flipping these headers backwards would be the firewall, the motor would have to be alot farther forward than what you might like in or to use them I'd bet with some cutting they would work though. -

I did some figuring and it looks like you guys were right the headers wont clear without some modification. But wheres the fun if you don't get to modify brand new parts? As far as downpipes I may just dump them right in front of the cross member instead of trying to route them back behind the front tire. I've also got a line on some Holset turbos from a 5.9 Cummins, would it be worth it to go to that turbo as opposed to the T3s I've got now? I believe the casting number is HX35 and I can get them pretty cheap. -

I have been doing some measuring and it looks like it should fit but it's going to be very tight and the exhaust my need some modification in order to clear the strut towers, we'll see when I get my Dad to set it in the car. No the LS1 is a completely different motor and these wont bolt up. And finally, have any of these people actually been in possession of one of these kits or even actually seen one, or are they just going off of what someone else who may or may not have ever actually run one said? I trust my old mans judgment he says the headers are of superb quality and with some brackets they will hold up no problem, so I'm not worried about it. If it grenades it grenades but I honestly think it will work as intended. -

No unfortunately the car is back in the States, I wish I was swapping motors over here but the squadron keeps me pretty busy. -
I need a new motor, the L24 in my 240z met an unfortunate fate at the hands of my little brother. So I got to thinking what can I build for cheap that will make decent power and is easy to maintain? I settled on a small block and began planning out the extent to which I was going to hot rod it. After talking with my machinist (read: my Dad) we decided a 383 with a mild cam and good intake would be perfect for the old blue devil. Well at the same time I was planning on building another 383 for a Camaro but this one was intended as a full race setup. Well through an odd twist of fate I can't seem to find a Camaro to save my life but I happen to have a 240Z with no motor in it that I would really like to drive the next time I go home. So as things sit I plan to be putting my race motor into my Z unless I can find a Camaro in short order. So anyway here is the plan I bought an SSAutochrome kit a while back and I had the local turbo shop take a look at it and after they gave me the thumbs up it was destined for my project. To tell the truth I don't know why this kit caught a bad rep, at least my kit seems to be of very good quality and everyone that I have had look at it seems to agree. But that's besides the point. Heres whats going in the motor. Holley 800 DP modified for blow-thru Victor Jr. High Rise MSD HEI Dist. Dart Iron Eagles 72cc chamber 215cc runners 2.02/1.60 valves Manley SS Valves Comp Springs Comp Roller Rockers Comp Cams Turbo Grind .543/.563 255/265 duration @ .50 SRP -31cc Dish Pistons Eagle H-Beam Rods Eagle 4340 Crank Four Bolt GM Block And last but not least twin T3/T4s at 8lbs with a good size intercooler I am hoping this will be good for about 600 at the flywheel. What do you think? If anyone has been over to thridgen.org recently I've got a thread over their as well but one guy really pissed me off calling me a detriment to the performance industry and what not which is one of the reasons I decided that this motor is going in the Z instead. Anyway here are some pics of the different parts and a few of the headers and turbos mocked up on a core motor with my Victor Jr. and a Predator on there for good measure.

No don't get me wrong I would have done the same thing as those guys in the Monte. But I just got the feeling they stepped over the line from good competition to down right dirty racing. That last pass is the only thing that bothered me, the Hybrid Z guys had a fair chance of winning based on the way that Monte had been running but when he did that wheelstand and walked right by them I just got the feeling he had been leading them along the whole time. I wasn't trying to say they cheated or anything I just don't think the better team won that night that's all. Oh, and I own several metric cars as well, I also race one at the local short track so I'm not completely biased.

I was talking more about under the hood as far as chrome goes just a little too blingy for me. I actually really like the way his CCWs look I may clean mine up that nice sometime soon but I can't stand how big they are, 16" is about my max anything more than that and it just bugs me.

I thought you Cali boys were restricted to fixed mags? I always had a soft spot for Saigas they are nice guns and very functional, I have their auto 12 ga. with a box mag. That's a very good deal for $350 too, I'm jealous I can't get an AK look alike that cheap even back home where they are legal. I beleive they want $450 for a WASR and $500 for a Saiga. Great buy, have fun with it it should shoot very nice.
-
Yes he is, watch the episode carefully and you will see how badly the Hybrid Z team got screwed especially on the last pass where the Monte does a wheel stand that it "couldn't" do before and walks right by the Z.
