  1. Hey every1. Ive had my car now for about a year now. Though I havnt posted in a long time. I have a 76 N/A 2+2. I have almost taken it down to bare essentials as far as emission control and A/C go. Blocked off heater and yada yada. I have just bought a great urethane bushing kit for it, havnt gotten it in yet due to cappy weather! And I wanna get a new rack and pinion, tie rod ends and ball joints for it. Workin at a part store now so go-figure.. Anywho to my point, I already have every gasket beside head gasket for this car including sleeve for the main. None installed yet. My question, I have this ticking from the top-end, cant tell if its injectors or valve train. It its constant and increases and decreases with engine RPM and gets louder when the car warms up. Other symptoms are it starting to bogg-out, missing, oil pressure loss, and really rough running. Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be causing this, and will it be easier/cheaper just to buy a new motor, or pull this one and rebuild it, or buy a new on really cheap rebuild it with some flat tops, cam, and a couple bolt-ons and see how many sets of tires this engine will burn through before it dies??
  2. That is a beautiful Z. I can only hope for mine to look that good...
  3. $120,000 is alot for a motor huh. Especially when you think about how much power and reliability you can get out of a v-8 or sumthing with $120,000 to put into it, or how nice of a Z you can build with that much, or while your at it you can buy a house too.....
  4. 611hp??? Doesnt that sound a bit too little for a quad turbo v-12?? Maybe its just me but isnt it possible to get the same out of a single or twin- turbo 8 cyl and still save twice the weight? I also noticed he mentioned its not legal for use in the US, if you buy the car for the US all they do to make it street-legal is add a cat. for each turbo. Also the weight of the motor and trans doesnt seem as much when its in the car that barely weighs a ton, the Bugatti is built with a carbon fiber frame and chassis. (was my child-hood dream car).... an interesting swap would be using the 850+hp 8cyl out of the koenigsegg CCR....
  5. That VW is nuts...hands down. The scooter hes got is even more nuts. Its a shame hes an a-hole but, more than some people with money to burn like that is. I would figure it would turn fairly normal, unless of course hes actually got the turbine spinnig up to speed, I dont think those piddly little stock wheels would turn it too well. Maybe he should get his head out of his a$$ and upgrade....
  6. I have to say thanks to JACKHAMMER and POPNWOOD. The only people who actually gave me info I can work with. My brother agreed with me to use his shop to do the swap. We are gonna do a bare bones 350, Im going to use a th350 trans, Im hoping to get a 5spd though. Im using everything I can fromthe Z. I will eventually get around to replacing everything new but for now Im just gonna do a streetable stock 350. Thanks for the help from everyone, I will post pics if I get a camera, and I am very determined to do the swap without even reaching the $1000 marl. Wish me luck.... -Mario
  7. I have used the search portal and cant find what Im looking for, Like I said there is alot of info on everything being brand new, from bumper to bumper. I have a very decent Z right now that really doesnt need anything, its all in good-shape. So my question simply is, Do I have to spend $3000-$4000 eventhough all I want to do is the swap. 60s block, carburated, 5spd, shorty headers, ect.... I wouldnt ask these questions, but Ive been a member here for a little over a month, been trying to study up on both motor ideas I have and just cant find anything about anyone wanting to do simple changes like I am. Thanks again -Mario
  8. Ok I read alot of these and it sounds like noone is quite doin what I am lookin at doing. Question: Saying that I had a fab shop to take care of any weldind or fabricating, and I already have a suitable mild carburated small block. What else has to be done to make it driveable. Can I use the Z rear end in it, I know drive shaft will have to be replaced, but assuming Im only putting out about 300-340HP would it be safe to use the stock Z differential?? Would the stock radiator move enough water, how will going from F.I. 6 to a carb. V-8 affect the computer, Ect... I dont want to use a whole lot of electranics on it. (elect. water pump, fuel pump, fans ect...) I wanna try to keep it as basic as possible. Switch panel and so forth. (also have someone to take care of switches and relays.) Im just wondering, All these corroded connectors and hoses are driveing me insane!!! I just want it gone. thanks, Mario
  9. You got a hella of a deal there. Just as I was thinking I got a kick A$$ deal on my 280 2+2. Running, complete, almost 0 rust, an extra engine, 5spd. But I need suspension, this things is drives like its on a trampoline. Any one with good OEM there gettin rid of?? -Mario 76 280Z 2+2, L28, 5spd
  10. Yea, I dont like the scoop much, the car is awsome though, I would have to update it with a couple new parts then those ten year out-of-date Ford parts under the hood. Needs a Chevy in it and it would be near perfect....
  11. Yea I feel it is too but I may still change my mind once I get out to the shop and have my brother and all his employees give me a hand with things. My personal opinion is you can't learn until you try right? Honestly the only thing holding me back is extra cash, but hey, come next month Im going to be working, well, doing murals on cars. Wish you all could see the art I can do. F-ing wickid shnit!!! P.S anyone in Nor Cal and need some major customization done, hit up A to Z customs in downtown Sacramento. Thay can do everything you can think of and have it done right. Pleas dont come for maintnance work, it will be rejected. -Mario
  12. Great post you guys, If I may say, Id like to mention that everything you guys have said is 100% true, I am on car number 6 in two years of having a license and have realized through my own experience to buy right the first time, mark and label everything, but I have never thought of taking pics of progress, dissasembly, ect... I have looked at others projects hough to follow up on if Im doing thing right or not. If I may add, a great way to prevent problems, confusion, or wrong parts, try and get a Chilton or Haynes manual for your car, or if possible a factory manual for it. Everything that has been discused falls into a catagory I like to call CSA. (common sense assembly) or put it back together the way it came apart. -Mario 76 280Z 2+2, bone-stock L28 w/ 5spd
  13. Hey, listen, I dont need your BS input, I mentioned several times, I am new to Nissan and even newer to the Zs. I have a pretty good understanding of what is what, just not what Nissan has what motor, this is why I created this thread, so that I can get help to see what would be easiest, most efficient, ect... You gota understand, I am 17, 18 on the tenth, and I dont know much about Zs and swaps possible in them, I am learning and learning fast, as of what is in the Maxima, I was just going by what my freind said, He is a Honda guy and knows absolutly nothing about Nissan. As of me not knowing what I am talkking about, kiss my A$$ just because I dont know all there is to know about, engine sizes, numbers, power, ect... Thats why I am here to learn. As of the SBC not being unique enough, your right, too damn many people have them, WAY TOO MANY!! I have heard alot of great ideas, thanks to dr hunt, zfan, z tard, deep and a few others, I really apreciate all the info, as of some ideas, such as 4cyl swapps, just doesnt make sense to me to go smaller, I am one who feels there is no replacement for displacement. If I had a 510 or something, a couple of those 4cyls sound nice. I do know enough to perform a succesful engine swap, just because I dont know what car has what engine in it, doesnt mean I dont know what will and wont fit, and what will need to be done to make it work. I understand it will NOT be a two day or even a two week project to do a "professional" job. Thats fine with me, I have all summer, and a complete custom auto shop to work with. As I mentioned I think for now, at least until I am older and have a little more experience, or a little more cash, I am going to stick with the L28, I have two so the rebuilt one is going in temporarily until I get the other rebuilt. Im doing everything new, and it will be N/A. I am not a big fan of turbo and supercharged cars, they are nice, but not my thing. I am also not looking for huge power, between 300-400 is more than enough for me to have fun for a while. Some day I will consider dropping in a Chevy, especially considering that is my company. Sorry for the attitude in this post, Im just here to learn not to be told I dont know anything, and I am not prepared to be doing stuff such as this. Thanks for all the input you guys and you have all been very helpful and am still looking for more ideas, and knowledge of the Nissan and Datsun world. Thanks so much! -Mario 76 280Z 2+2: bone stock L28E, 5spd, HUGE work in progress, but still daily driver.
  14. Well as of now, I was offered an 89 Maxima with DOHC six in it for $500, so Im most likely goin for that swap for now, use the seats, steering wheel, and whatever else I may see fit from the Maxima. Im still not 100% sure yet, I may use the $500 towards one of the two L28s i already have. Speaking of wich, if anyone wants one, needs one, or would just like to have one, they're both bone stock, good shape, one is rebuilt, and both totally complete. I dont know the value of these but Im sure some one here might.
  15. Yea I have begun to notice that it has been easier to find that car on this site than anywhere else. You would definately think a Z as sweet as that would have stories about it left and right. I do have to admit, just my opinion, the more I look at it, the more I hate that big *** wing on the back, I know its there for downforce, but really looks tacky. I just cant believe that something with that much time, money, and effort spent on it has no story to go behind it!!!
  16. Even so with the LS1 being lighter or not, my point was trying to get away from the played-out V-8 motor swaps, and also like I said the vortech is sitting right outside next to my Z. Not my truck of course but, hey it would be somewhat nifty, not to mention a whole hell of alot cheaper than trying to get your hands on a nice LS1. Im just trying to figure out an engine I wanna put in my Z that someone else hasnt already done, but it seems to me that no such swap exsists. Ive seen everything from a 4cyl to a 12cyl. My only guess is doing the near impossible and trying to wedge Cadillacs new v-16 in the damn thing. YEEHAH right? Let see some-one pull that off, If some one has please send me pics. wickidmindid@wmconnect.com Mario
  17. For what it is worth, it is obviosly on a 4wd dyno, but like some one earlier mentioned that doesnt mean it is AWD. take a close look and you can see that none of the wheels are even set in the dyno, all are lifted off the rollers, so from this pic it seems to be pretty hard to tell, and as veritech mentioned, it does look like a standard L series motor in it, and I do have to admit, it does NOT look like there is another set of axles stuffed in the front of that. As of the wide body, doesnt mean that its got axles stuffed in front and back, just allows more room for a wider stance and wider profile tires while minimizing the camber angle. Also as veritech mentioned, if this is an actual registered race car you'd be able to pull up info on it just searching under terms such as MONZA Z, or monza datsun, monza racing, ect... To be 100% with you, after about 2 to 2.5 hours of searching yesterday, the only Datsun I found done by monza motorspoerts was a 510. And judging by the looks of that shop, it really doesn't look very professional at all, probably a local car club of that area or something, a pro shop, especially a company like MONZA, the shop would be much cleaner and probably alot better equipped than that. Thats just my opinion on that subject, it is a beautiful Z though and definately some big $$ well-spent. HUGE props to the guy(s) or girl(s) who put this one together. That Z in the link veritech supplied is f-ing wicked. Flatout, probably one of the sickest Z's Ive seen yet.
  18. Do you have any idea what site you found the datsun on, or what terms you were seaching for, I have found no datsun Zs under monza racing, monza motorsports, monza Z, monza racing datsun, none of those have pulled up anything on this car, maybe I should try searching under ADVAN too.... We'll see, Ill definately keep you all psted if I find anything more. BADASS car though. I want one.

Very slick lookin car, but Im not really feelin the grill, but the rest is sweet!
  20. No those other motors dont rev to 14,000, maybe 7000. Yes everything on his 327 was custom done. He used different parts from other engines, bigger oil pump, fuel pump, everything was blueprinted and balanced. Now the thing I didnt menton, granted he did manage to build it and drive it, the motor DID not last long, simply just a project to see if he could pull it off. As I mentioned he has been building hot rods and customs his whole life, even before he could drive. He is simply a backyard mechanic who has studied everyway possible to "tweak" a motor and get amazing results, as I said he is a backyard mechanic and those crazy projects as his 327 were just temporary, he finally settled with another, more streetable 9000 RPM 327 in it. As of the DOHC 350's, I myself have not heard of any, but now my minds at work and must findout for myself.
  21. He built it before my time, my oldest brother was a baby(hes now 28). From my knowledge, The electrcal systems, oiling systems, ignition, ect... was all his own designs. Hes been building race engines since before he was old enough to drive. To this day he just finished a 550 Hp N/A 350 well 383 for his friends Blazer, another 400hp ford small block for his bosses willies. And most amazing a near 400Hp 350 that runs on propane for his bosses 56 bel-air. All fed through Edelbrock 4bbl carbs. I can ask him the details of the 327 he built next time I talk to him.
  22. Granted Hondas are low torque motors, the cars they come in are generally light wheight anyway. Torque is usually only a big problem with heavier cars, Using a Honda for example, my friend had a mild GSR motor in his 93 hatch, he had a cold air, DC sport header, 5Zigen exhaust, full interior, and stereo and still ran a mid 13 sec 1/4 mile. That motor wound up to 9000 RPM, granted he blew the head about the 4th time doing so, it was still very impressive and can chew through the Z rated times from first to fourth gear. As of you comment on the TSI Talon, its not so much a problem of lack of torque, the cars are fairly powerful, thier downfall is needing the extra power for the 4wd, this is why the TSI is a turbo car and not N/A. Thats honestly just my opinon on things, I do agree on the fact of "no replacement for displacement" but I do also have to agree it depends on what your driving and whos driving it. On another example, my moms 68 Roadrunner with a 383 and four speed, full interior, steel mags, ect... could still outrun Corvettes all day long, yes believe it or not she even took them around corners too. Cops couldnt touch her either.
