Post up your wheel designs!!!
hughdogz replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
You could use the Coil feature if the profile is constant, otherwise use Loft for the "through curves". As for the loading, I loaded mine like "shock loading" taking off in the 1/4 mile. LOL! So no problems with the ANSYS FEA in Inventor? Guess who is (pretty much) the sole QA Engineer for that program?? Have you tried Dynamic Simulation yet? It is a really powerful tool, but a really steep learning curve with regard to the UI. Sorry for the off-topic Boost Man Dan.... -
MJ, it should be really easy to move. In fact, there should be almost no resistance. An easy check is to unbolt the (five ?) bolts that hold the internal wastegate housing to the turbine housing. Fair warning about maybe having to replace the gasket (if there is one) though... It could be full of carbon or coke if it had an oil bearing failure. How easy is it to spin the impeller / turbine wheel? Is there a lot of play in the axial direction? HTH...

Got my T3/T04E hybrid turbo today! (pics too of course)

Sweet! I have plans to eventually use an MSA stage II cam and do some head work too (unshroud valves, smooth runners, 5-angle valve job). I could also port the exhaust manifold too. These should really help me with my goal. If jgkurz's calculations are right, even 340 RWHP should be a fun ride. As some others pointed out, I might be tempting fate by using the ultimate in an S130. It is 1 3/8" thicker than a stock wastegate housing, so I have even less room for a 3" DP. I hope I won't have interference issues with the DP and firewall. If a 3" CLR donut won't fit I'm screwed! -
Hey thanks for the info SuperDan! It sounds like you're already aware of it. It's really not a big deal, I was mainly wondering if it was just me. Cheers, -Hugh

^^^ Me too. Today I looked and all the sudden I have messages from two days ago! Very funny Mopar69...err...Challenger. Lol!

Hi Admins, It seems like after the server was upgraded, when you go to post / reply it takes forever to come back (I've had it "hang" a couple times). I ended up hitting post reply again and boom - double post. It seems like there are a lot of other members lately that have double-posted. I've done some experimenting and preview post is fine, but it seems like after the post / reply is submitted, the browser just doesn't bring you back to the thread. Is it just me? Am I going crazy again?! I'm using Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7 on Linux Freespire O/S. Thanks, -hughdogz

Time for another update. I've been removing the stock FI harness now that I know the Wolf is up and running. I got the main harness to come out without cutting a single wire!! I still have a couple more circuits to remove, but I want to wait and make sure all gages and lights are still functional when driving it before I do any more removing, and I still need to hook up the Tach and engine temp gage. Next is installing the LMA-3 datalogger. Innovate says it has to be mounted within 3 degrees of horizontal for the accelerometer to function properly. I was planning on mounting it vertically where the old ECU used to be, but that doesn't sound like an option anymore. There is no place that I've found so far under the passenger dash for it either. So it looks as though I may have to mount it in the glovebox! What a pain because I'm already wired up where the OEM ECU used to be. As soon as I have that figured out and wired up, I'll do another "sanity check" with the timing, fuel pressure, and finding the correct current to drive the injectors. They are low-impedance RX-7 (Bosch) units, so I think they should be taking less current than 4 A open and 1 A hold. Bo (KTM) gave me so much help and advice with learning how to tune!! He answered a LOT of my questions (and explained even more) on how to use the Innovate system and the Wolf (thanks Bo!! ). When I become more familiar with Logworks2, I'll be able to set up the parameters, start driving and collecting data for tuning. Man, it has been a fun ride so far. I'll post another vid soon...I've even had a request or two. Later!

Awesome news Gabe! I knew you'd get it going in time for the DNI.

I shouldn't have replied so soon. All I'm gonna say is that I didn't have the greatest experience with the custom work done. I think I'd be doing a dis-service to my fellow HBZ members if I said otherwise or kept my mouth shut. You can PM me if you have questions. Sorry for the confusion, -hughdogz

Some OEM's already run them, but they are used only for the beverage cooler. IGLOO has had these on the market for years as a 12V plugin to the cigarette lighter. I'm not sure what the power consuption is, but these won't cool down a beverage, rather they can keep an already cool can cool. Just like you said, you can reverse the polarity by flip the plug over, and it becomes a warmer. I've played around with these peltier devices a little. If you heat one side and cool the other, you can generate a small current. I've even thought of making a "storm-trooper" suit using many of these devices. MEMS technology is already ahead of the peltier technology in this regard since peltiers aren't very efficient.
-
It seems almost impractical with just one unit if they pull 545 Watts. On a 12V system, that means it will pull ~45.4 Ampres. A ZX alternator max output is 60A. Of course you would also need to bond some heat transfer fins to pull the heat out of the air. Those peltier devices also generate heat on the other side, so you would also have to figure a way of rejecting the heat generated outside of the cabin, just like an A/C condenser does. It would probably work really well for a beer chiller though (j/k).

To estimate HP, I used the figures from here: http://www.sdsefi.com/techform.htm Convert the 47 lbs/min to CFM: (47 lbs/min) * (1 cubic foot / 0.0765 lbs) = 614 CFM Using 1.5 CFM per HP makes it: 601 CFM * (1 HP / 1.5 CFM) = 409 HP Is this rwhp or not? I believe this is right about where John is now with his 50 trim. I guess only a dyno will tell for certaom what my setup will do ~24 psi. -

John, thanks for the good news! I'm probably going to keep it anyway, a little bigger isn't such a bad thing. I don't think it will be too difficult to install either. It seemed well understood that a cermachrome coating would not be as good for a turbine housing. So it is this awesome HPC coating that is bad-ass and everything (not cermachrome?). We shall see. [Edit: It looks like it is only good to 1300F. D'oh! http://www.hpcoatings.com/am/products/products_heat_which.aspx] -

If it won't make it to 450 whp easily, then no biggie. I know I'll have to beef up my drivetrain before I can even dream about putting down that kind of power. If it can make ~375 WHP I'll be ecstatic! I'm pretty sure it will work fine with just a small spacer. I just didn't want to sacrifice low boost threshold as much as possible. Eventually, I'll want a GT-series, get serious about the drivetrain, and design some custom manifolds. But first I need to learn how to tune on what I have installed now and quit dreaming. -

Hey John, I really appreciate your time and help... You know, I really hate to say anything negative about vendors, but I specifically asked for the .50 trim wheel in a .50 trim housing, since I knew this could be an issue. I was told a .50 trim housing would be used. On top of it, I said I don't want a cermachrome coating either. I wanted the better performing black coating. It took three months to get this one, so I don't even want to hassle with the S.O.B. anymore! Sheesh! I guess I can still use it and buy a 3/8" spacer, longer studs and (most likely) rework some of my IC piping. OR I can call the guy back and see what he says about it. Maybe I can get a .50 trim housing out of him. The bigger compressor housing really has no benefit to me at all, right? Ehh...I think I kind of brought this upon myself for jumping the gun and having too many irons in the fire... -

It hits alright...mainly just the bosses interfering though. If I clock the compressor housing, I might get lucky, but it's looking like I need to remove some of the boss on the manifold and run a 1/8" spacer. I'm hoping that's all it will take. I can't remember if you said you had to modify the compressor housing too. How did you fit yours? Thanks! -

Thanks for the map John! ATP turbo Clicky ^^^ Damn! They changed their design to a cast piece. I think I like their new design better. It seems like it has better transistions and would transfer less heat. I should call them and see if they are willing to exchange. Yes, I do. I'll check it out. I thought it was the intake that might hit... I still need to buy a wastegate actuator and mounting bracket. I figured I'd wait until I knew (for sure) that the housings would bolt up and they did! -

Hey, thanks guys! The specs are 50 trim compressor and stage III turbine wheel in the .63 A/R housing. Supportable of up to 450 RWHP. I agree, Yasin's manifolds are sweet! Maybe I should have gone externally wastegated from the git-go. We'll see how the ultimate turns out. -
Now I just have to design the downpipe. What grade stainless alloy is good for this? 304 or 409 Stainless?? I also want to incorperate two O2 bungs (one for wideband, one for narrow) and a "slash reed" for the cam cover vacuum instead of a breather. I also got an "Ultimate Internal Wastegate" from ATP turbos! I want to get everything (including my shaved N42 intake) ceramic coated as well...and thermal wrap the DP / exhaust manifold! more pics: View single post from my project page clicky

I needed to follow up on this post....just want to say that I got my delivery from Peak Turbos today!! http://forums.hybridz.org/showpost.php?p=861381&postcount=19 AWESOME QUALITY!! I highly recommend Ken's work / products. Cheers, -hughdogz

Woot Woot! I got the Wolf 3D running this week (still have to tune). Today I got my hybrid turbo delivered. I had Ken Peak at Phoenix Turbos custom build it for me. It is a T3/T04E, 50 trim compressor wheel in a .60 A/R housing. It has a .63 A/R stage III turbine wheel that has the .63 A/R housing HPC ceramic coated!! I got it with a (late) Ford 5-bolt housing so I can use the "Ultimate Internal Wastegate" I got from ATP turbos. The compressor housing seems HUGE compared to stock. I hope I don't need to run a spacer in order for it to clear the intake / exhaust manifolds and my IC piping can be manipulated to fit. SHINEY HPC ceramic coating on the turbine housing: Notice the "Bullet" low-drag nut to enhance airflow: I may need to upgrade to braided AN oil feed lines: Here is the "Ultimate Internal Wastegate". I didn't want the hassle of modding the stock turbo exhaust manifold for an external wastegate just yet. A divorced external wastegate downpipe like jgkurz made seemed like a huge challenge as well. I hope I don't get much boost creep with this unit. It looks like it should flow really well! S130's don't have much room for a DP or external wastegate compared to the S30 turbo'd. So, this gave me good flow and already has a 3" flange for easy disconnection from the downpipe. Another shot: Stacked! LOW restriction! (hopefully) Time to order up the 3 inch stainless mandrel bends for the exhaust fab...I wonder what the best alloy is to use?

Hi Justin, I commuted on my Aprilia electric bike to work for about 9 months (~1800 miles). Be REALLY freaking careful around cars. DON'T assume they see you!! Or will give you the right of way!! Even though we have bike lanes in PDX (the most "bike friendly" city in the USA), almost every week there is a hit-and run, and about once a month a bicyclist gets killed.
