well i'm still going to try to find a rotor that will slide over the hub instead of in back. i'm doing this because i want to try to eliminate the use of the spacers which will lower the cost of the kit. i did find a good potential rotor to try out. it is thicker and has a larger diameter to! i will post pics of a mock up if it works. but i have to re drill the bolt pattern so i wont have it done util early next week. after i try this i will either go with the current setup or decide to switch to the slide over rotor i'm considering.

obviously the front will be much stronger than the rear brakes, and the only real way to fix that is to get stronger rear brakes. i plan on making a kit for the rear if the front is successful. many s30 guys convert the front without any complaints, and they have drum brake rears. so i guess it's all preference. i'm still looking for way to bring down the cost, if i don't find anything in the next week then i'll start designing the bracket for this kit on the computer. i'll keep you guys updated.

Ok I have mocked up a kit that will work for all the requirements we have been speaking of. There is one slight problem: I went over the desired price. It looks like the kit is going to cost somewhere around $630. Let me know what you guys think. Here is what I’m using: Rotor: 11.2 inch diameter, 19mm thick, made to fit behind the hub (stock position) Caliper: pretty large Toyota 4 piston caliper with 4x 43mm pistons. (Much larger than most wilwood calipers) Standard pads, custom made brackets, custom made spacers to move rotor back for more clearance, steel braided brake lines, necessary hardware, This kit has completely satisfied one of my most important requirements, which was to have plenty of clearance. The caliper does not stick out much past the hub surface, I think it's less than 15mm, but I didn't check today since it's raining. I think it should even fit under 15 inch stock wheels. Hopefully. So let me know if you guys think it's a good kit for the price. Or let me know what your opinion is. If it's not positive then please let me know so I can go back to the drawing board (which I don't mind to do)

OK thank you for your input. right now i'm trying to find a rotor that will mount to the back of the hub. then i'll start thinking about the calipers i want to use. i am leaning towards the Toyota caliper, maybe something with larger pistons than the s12 caliper. i don't want to use the 300zx caliper since the supply is running low, and i don't want to run into any problems in the future.

Ok I need your opinions on something. Initial goal was to use an OEM rotor. The problem I’m having is finding a rotor with the dimensions I need. I want to mount the rotor in the stock location which is in back of the hub. Most cars come with front a mounted rotor, which means that most rotors are much higher than what I need. I was thinking maybe I could mount the rotor in front of the hub. This would greatly open my options. Two problems with this are: 1. This would cause your wheel to move out toward the fender about 1/4 inch. 2. The wheel studs you have will be 1/4 inch shorter. My 2 questions: 1. Do you guys have 1/4 inch of room between your tire and fender? Would moving the wheel out a quarter inch cause rubbing issues? 2. With your current rim, do you think you would have a problem with having 1/4 inch less thread to mount the wheel?

OK guys thanks for your input!! i will use a 4 piston caliper, don't worry. roger: you're right the 300zx calipers are great and i have not had any problems with them after selling hundreds of them for over 5 years now. but the availability is getting quite low. you might not see it yet but if you call a rebuilding company and ask what they have on hand at that time they will probably tell you a number under 10. on the other hand they have over 100 Toyota calipers in stock. i'm just being conservative in my thinking. yes 12.2 inch rotor could easily fit under a 15 inch wheel, the caliper is what gets in the way. i'll let you know if i need any help. thanks!

Ok so it sounds like the kit would need to fit under 15 or 16 inch wheels. So I guess I’m going to have a large 4 piston caliper with a smaller 11-11.5 inch rotor. And I should try to move the caliper back towards the center of the car so it doesn't stick out much past the hub mounting surface. I do want to use all OEM calipers and pads of other cars so replacement parts could be bought anywhere. The rotors will for sure have to be modified to fit the zx hub. Blu destiny - At first I wanted to use 300zxtt calipers but after checking the amount of available calipers I decided not to use them. About 2 years ago those calipers could be bought rebuilt for $90, today they are going for 140 and there are 5 pairs kept on hand compared to 40 pairs two years ago. These calipers are going to be extremely hard to find in the near future (just like the 15/16 280zx master cylinders today). I have 3 different calipers and 5 different rotors I’m going to try to fit on the hub. I should know which combination I want to use in the next 7-10 days. Then I’ll start making the cad file for the bracket. I’ll post my progress… Thanks for your input! Please keep posting your info so I have a better idea of what the Average demand is.

This forum is intended to gauge the interest in a 280zx brake kit. Our company is currently in the middle of the designing stages of producing a brake upgrade for the 280zx. I just wanted to get the opinions of my fellow Hybridz members. Pleas post your: - Wants for a brake upgrade (eg. Rotor diameter, # of pistons, minimum rim diameter etc.) - desired price (be realistic) - desired features - any other comments you think would be useful Also I would like to know what wheel diameter you have on your 280zx?

Brakes! Who is running what?

another factor you should consider is if you want to have an e-brake. our rear stage 4 kit has an e-brake and AZC does not if i'm correct. -
Strange clicking in rear wheel area
Silver Mine Motors replied to jgkurz's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i also have the same clicking sound from my left wheel on take off. i have a new diff, bearings, brakes, and suspension so all i can think it might be is the splines in the hub. keep us posted if you figure it out. and i have no rocks to clean in that area. -
The non vented kit will have brake fade at the same limit as your stock brakes, since you are using your stock rotors. The difference in price is only $130 between our non-vented and vented kit (assuming you have a 280z) and only a $90 difference if you have a 240z. Installing both kits is exactly the same. You just put the spacer between the rotor and your hub. In my opinion there is no question; buy the vented kit.

4x4 caliper will it fit
Silver Mine Motors replied to corey_49's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i haven't personally tried it but i got the s12+8 caliper to fit under a 14 inch rim, so i think it would fit. to be sure just buy one caliper at first, bolt it up and see if it fits. this way if it doesn't you won't waste as much money. all you really need is the calipers and pads. your stock rotors are going to to be used with the s12+8 calipers (off a 79 toyota pickup truck 4x4). also the rear maxima brakes are not going to be proportionate with any four piston caliper front brake setup. i would consider more power for the rear brakes. look into our kit. it retains your e-brake function and is proportionate with the front brakes your considering. http://silverminemotors.com/Stage-4-Rear-Big-Brake-Kit-Stage-4-Rear-Big-Brake-Kit.htm tell me if you have any more questions. -
