    I feel stupid!

This is one of those deals where it would be nice to get the car running again then switch to megasquirt. If that is not easy or not an option then dive in. I don't have enough information about an 82 to give specific instructions for the install. Keep reading the manual and forums and start the conversion. There are a few guys in AZ, maybe you can get some help if you get in a jam.
  2. It is true. I have several magnets from hard drives and they are very impressive, and I have got hurt with them. They are very brittle though.
  3. To increase fuel mileage, they cosmically align the particles in the fuel helping to prevent pre-detontation just kidding, I think you use them in the oil pan to collect iron filings
  4. That first picture is fantastic. With the leaves, the house in the background and the awesome z. It is what I would expect to see on the cover of a hot rod magazine or in a calendar. I think we need to get x-mas cards made with that picture on them. The z is home for the holidays. Very nice for a wallpaper like mentioned earlier.
  5. I thought you need to go into the .ini file and un-comment the line that selects you type of wideband so the megatune will use the correct calibration/setting file. Something like that, but I haven't looked at it in a long time.
  6. Here is what I found out after messing with it for a few days now. If metal is heavily rusted hit it with die grinder wire wheel, then lightly sand with 80 grit by hand. It goes on great and the finish is real nice (IMO) If metal has light rust hit with wire brush by hand lightly and then apply. In any case if you shine down to the metal, forget it. Even scuffing with 80 grit it didn't apply well. Just my experience.
  7. did you post on msefi for help in your area. I'm sure there are a lot more megasquirt users near you that aren't on this forum.
  8. Sounds like the rotor is too far away from the post when you go above 30 degrees timing. That is what our V8 with TPI did because the rotor wasn't phased correctly. At anyting above 32 degrees it would jump to the wrong post and cause a miss at higher rpms. When you set up the trigger timing did you rotate the engine 50 crank degrees or 50 distributor degrees? Did you measure around the damper so you are close to 50 degrees or just eyeball it? If you are using an 82-83 turbo dizzy and you set up the trigger at 50-60 degrees BTDC (and your dizzy is installed like factory, not off several teeth) everything will fall into place and you don't have to worry about rotor phasing. OTOH, if you set the trigger somehwere else and are not sure the dizzy is dropped in like factory then I would recommend checking the rotor phasing. Easiest to do with a cut out hole in an old dizzy cap so you can look in and see where the rotor is when spark is sent at lowest and highest advance (like 5BTDC and 40BTDC). It doesn't really matter how a dizzy is installed as long as you roll to #1 TDC and see which post should have number one plug wire attached. Other than that it just introduces a level of confusion that could be avoided. Good Luck
  9. Here you go, auto-nomics TB on top. Will run megasquirtnspark with GM TPI dizzy (8 pin HEI module). Unfortunately it is not going in a z car(yet?). Goin in my 34 pontiac, but I thought you guys would enjoy the picture anyway.
  10. If I used a wire wheel on the die grinder to knock off the surface rust, the resulting surface is fairly smooth. Should I scuff it before spraying on Hammerite coating? I will try an experiment but wondering what the experience has been.
  11. I installed that zip and opened your msq file, megatune complained that the msq was not compatible, but I ignored that and opened it anyway. I looked through most all of it and didn't see anything at first that looks out of whack. Where are you at right now, does it start, run or anything?
  12. I'll have to get the newer megatune installed on some pc here before I can look at them. May take me a couple days. Remind me if you don't get any feedback.
  13. Trust me you don't need any evidence to get a restraining order issued and especially to get a temporary put in place. It is purely based on whether you are scared of the person and the judge loses nothing by granting it. If you mess around with the dude much he'll probably just get one against you and then continue to follow you around and harass, then you'll get in trouble if you confront him. Trust me, I'm kneck deep in one of these situations and the system doesn't work to either sides advantage. The first one to the cops wins and the more slimy a person you are the better the system works for you. The dude will have to burn himself out, the less what he does bothers you the quicker he will get bored with the situation and give it up.
  14. Sounds like you have the wrong wire from the dizzy so it gives 360 triggers per rotation.
  15. You also need to be careful if you are using different boxes with different code that you keep MegaTune matched to what you are using. That can get very confusing at times.
  16. rpm should register when cranking (couple hundred rpms?). So you are not getting a trigger from the CAS/dizzy it seems. All the 12 volt power to the dizzy red wire and pullup resistor are staying on during cranking? That is the most obvious thing.
  17. If it was me I would just run an MSD 6A with the MSnS. But EDIS would be neat. I just wouldn't be up for spending the time to work the bugs out of the install for EDIS. Your going to run a wideband controller and EGT if money is no option. Go ahead and set up water injection using MSnS to control. That will support you high boost expectations.
  18. Here is the info on the DB9 cable from msefi.com 3. Your DB-9 cable must be a strait pass through cable, not a null modem cable. So pin1 must be connected to pin 1 on both ends, on down through all the pins.
  19. When you turn the key and the unit powers on, your fuel pumps runs for a couple seconds right? Then if you leave everything on and turn the dizzy by hand a little to cause a trigger to the ECU, the fuel pump will run again for a couple seconds. It should also be running while your cranking and for the couple seconds when you let off cranking. I would use that as a troubleshooting tool if you can't get the laptop connected.
  20. Just like network cables there are two types of db9 cables, if you are grabbing some that are laying around from the office or from your home PC setup. There are straight through types and crossover types. Make sure you have the right type, measure with a multi meter to verify the pinout on both ends of the cable. Megamanual should explain this, but I didn't go look. I went through about 20 cables here at work and only found 2 that were the correct style to work with megasquirt. I don't remember off hand which one is correct, check the megmanual.
  21. Thanks for the input guys. I'll see what else I can figure out.
