  1. Lone, the only reason I would go with the SC over the turbo is that the SC is a bolt on kit. Also, you could still gain 30-40% HP without an intercooler. I think that even if I were going to turbo my car I would still look into the vortech pressure box for the carb. It looks like a real nice unit!
  2. Im not sure about those turbos but I have an idea that might help you with some future considerations. If your running a carb engine you will need to have a pressure box for your carb. Vortech makes a new supercharger that is made for the Holley 4150. I think the whole setup is around 3.5K so Im sure the box itself wouldnt break the bank like some pressure boxes would. It also looks really sweet! FWIW, if it were me I would look into the Votech SC and stay away from the turbo
  3. just read your screen name and it looks like you have already put some thought into a 383?
  4. Be sure and let us know if it works. I think this guy sells a lot of those. I have looked at them before. I would really like to stay away from aluminum if I can. Saving money is good also. When are you planning on putting it in?
  5. Great looking car and it looks like a honey of a deal! I am just starting on my 240 but one thing that has really helped me is using the search function on the forum. Hit search at the top of the page and look for different topics. I am pretty sure that you can do a R200 swap and use your stock 240 drive shaft. I could be wrong but I seem to remember someone telling me that the R200 is longer than the R180 by the same amount as the set back difference. When you use the R200 mustach bar and brace everything should line up. Like I said, im not for sure about this you should do a search in the driveline forum for R200 swaps.
  6. One muffler that Ive found makes a Z sound really mean is one tucked in behind a sbc engine! I love the straight six engines but if you have a healthy budget and want to build something with special performance I feel a V8 is the way to go. Look at how much power the sbc makes in stock form. The new ZO6 makes 405hp. Imagine what it would do with a small supercharger! To get anywhere near those numbers with a datsun six you would be giving up a LOT of reliability. Most people dont want to go with the sbc for weight reasons but that argument is not all together valid. If you use aluminum components and relocate the battery to the rear you are maybe even a little lighter than a 280 engine + turbo. You also get better weight distribution. I dont want to come across as bad mouthing the datsun mill. Just keep in mind that no matter what you do to the original engine you will never have the potential of a sbc. You just need to decide what you want to use the car for.
  7. You know, I really like the idea of a turbo sbc but it would seem to me that the cons out weigh the pros. Something I have been thinking about for down the road is a super charger. Vortech has a new universal Carburated supercharger that I think looks really sweet! Here is a link... Vortech My engine is about 9.4:1 static compression so I would need an intercooler if I decided to go this way. Im not sure that Vortech offers one. Im am however pretty sure that ATI has an intercooled sbc system. What do you guys think of this?
  8. Okay guys, I didnt realize that you were on the other side of the world. Here in Tennessee you practically have to climb over the SBC engines in the salvage yards. They are for sure the cheapest way to go!
  9. You could just do like me. I have under 2K in my engine/trans combo and it should make well over 400 HP. Of course it is a 355 chevy! Dont get me wrong. I think a turbo six would be great and to be honest if I could choose between a turbo six and a chevy eight with the same performance I would probably take the six. Once you figure in cost though there is no comparison! SBC will win power Vs dollars any day of the week IMHO.
  10. Well this just reenforces one thing in me. I can never sell my Z car! That is a great price and you know he has three times that in the car. I have close to that in mine and the engine is still at the machine shop! I will have this thing till the day I die!
  11. Might be too late for you guys but my latest Jegs catalog has internally ballanced 400 cranks for really cheap. Dont have it in front of me but if I remember right aprox $650 for forged and $250 for cast. I think they were Eagle units.
  12. From what I understand the guys having problems with the U-joints are running a lot more HP than you are planning. There are a lot of guys running 450HP and never changing U-joints. Most of the breaks a read about are high 400+ HP set ups running slicks. If you are putting in new Us most say the ones with no grease fittings are stronger. Look for ones called Brute Force
  13. Yes you will, you can either modify it, move it to one side or do away with it and go with pins. One other thing to check on would be engine height. Im not sure if the ford is shorter than the chevy but sometimes hood clearance can be an issue. This is only if you are wanting to use a full size high rise intake or a tall air cleaner. Most can fit the performer RPM or Vic Jr. with no problem as long as a drop filter is used. One little surprise you will run into with the Ford concerns the driveshaft. JTR sells a differential yoke that accepts a chevy U-joint. That way you can the strong chevy, chevy setup. If you go ford you will either have to find an adapter style U-joint or have a datsun end welded onto your driveshaft. the datsun U-joint is not as strong as the chevy. This on one other thing that convinced my to go chevy. I started this wanted to go with a 5.0.
  14. Hey now all the cars weren’t that bad! cant be all rice with a BMW snuggled up to a C3! I actually kind of like the louvers in the hood and fenders. Also, think the spoiler is in good taste!
  15. Damon, one thing to think about is total price of the project. Lets say you did go stroker. You could probably buy a 350 and stroke it cheaper than you could stroke a free 302! Jegs stoker kits Notice the ford cost about $480 more. The rest of the engine will also cost you for instance if you want to put a Victor Jr. intake you will fork out another $40 for the ford. Dont get me wrong Fords are great engines. You just pay for them! I would probably choose a ford 347 over a chevy 350 with the same heads and equipment. With that said the price is nowhere near the same ball park!
  16. This is all JMO but I would go with the chevy. A couple of years ago I built a 351W for a 69 mustang. The heads are what kill a ford engine. If you are going to go with aftermarket heads then this isnt much of a problem but if you want to use the stock heads you probably want to go with the chevy!
  17. Hey man check the for sale section on this board. Denny411 has two R200 for sale. Hard to beat $50 + shipping!
  18. Check this out man. I bet this would smoke anything on this board!! Too fast!
  19. Come on guys. someone help me out here... I need to know what to tell my welder. Thanks
  20. hey guys, Im about to have my roll cage welded in and am wanting to make sure I will be able to get my dash out for future work. It will be 8pt that comes down in front of the dash. I have seen several of them done this way but am not sure about the dash. I guess I need to know how far forward the dash needs to come to make it out?
  21. Okay, these guys are right... We will help you all you want but need a little more information. Maybe this will help though. Most feel that you want to stick with a 350+ cubic inch engine. Here are the common sbc engines and the order of preference as I see them. 383 (Stroker motor, uses 400 crank in a 350 block) 400 (Not nearly as common as 350 and more $ to build) 350 (Most common engine on the planet, dirt cheap parts) 327 (Very high revving engine, most feel its a little small. More expensive than a 350 to build) 305 (Engine in cheap and easy to come by but dont go there) Transmissions in order of strength. Oh and by the way you really need an overdrive so thats all Ill list. (Just my best guess) T56 (Manual 6sp used in corvettes late F bodies such as camaros) 700R4 (Auto 4sp used in many GM cars 86+ for the good ones) 200R4 (Auto 4sp Lighter and better gear ratios than the 700 harder to find and not as strong) T-5 world class(Manual 5sp, 3ed generation F bodies with 350. Not recommended for much over stock power) Give us some more info and we will help you out. You might want to also try to search function at the top of the page.
  22. buy a gasket, mine was $5 at Advanced. I also used a thin coat of RTV on the bottom half of the case. I really dont want any leaks. JM2cents
