  1. My car never had the strap.

Best solution is to replace the strap with either a Ron Tyle type diff mount, or do any one of the low buck solutions to run a catch underneath the cross member. Look for stickies (I think) in the drivetrain section.

The stock isolator is a poor design and can be readily improved.

  2. "both engines have the same bore, the 383's piston friction at 7,000 rpm will be much greater due to the .750 longer stroke"

piston friction will cause slower revs. I think your crazy man.

You are right, but what I think he is saying is a 383 has a bigger push. More power trumps more friction.

I would think the piston friction will be small compared to the energy that must be pumped into the heavier rotating mass.

And when in gear, the engine that revs the fastest is the the one in the car that accelerates the fastest. Once again, power rules. In that case the 383 will almost certainly win.

  3. I have had one in the dash of my car for the last year or so. It stays out winter and summer. It definintely didn't like the temp extremes. for a while I had to reset it pretty much every other day. But after a few months it stopped doing that and now it works fine all the time.

  4. If i were to mount one square to a magnet then stick it to the flange on the diff and pointed it towards the tail shaft of the trans till the dot hit the tail shaft center point would that do the same tjing for side to side .

That won't work. Twist the engine and the dot will hit the tail shaft, but now your angles are screwed. Besides, the engine is typically offset to one side of the car. Thus the diff shouldn’t be pointing directly at the trans. You want the two lines parallel to each other.

Just go a head and hook it up. If it vibrates then I am sure it will be less work to remount the engine a second time.

  5. It would be interesting to see if the amount of energy you save in aerodynamics is anywhere near what can be saved with a good electronics controls of the motor. You will be at a decided disadvantage compared to the car companies in that regard.

And of course the batteries are what will make or break your project. The car manufactures are effectively subsidizing the cost of the batteries when they sell their hybrids. That will be a huge cost disadvantage you will have to overcome.

If you are doing this to try and save money, then I would wait for the plug in electric hybrids to show up. See if Chevy produces the Volt. That is electric drive only, with the small generator on board and not in a trailer.

My guess any car you build in your garage will be a very expensive car to run. Especially when you think about the tax advantages and low profit margins that will be throw toward the early plug in hybrids.

Have you check the price of electricity in your area? Florida has a rep for high electric prices. It may be cheaper to stay with gas.

  6. I have had gas sit for much longer than 9 months without a problem. People in the military frequently leave their cars for 6 month to a year or more.

Dump in some fuel stabilizer, then everytime you fill up your daily driver add a gallon or so of the old gas.

  7. Meritocracy?

Whew. I had to do a google search on that one.

Yeah, the thread is getting old. :search::beatdeadh

This conversation is going the same way of the 47 others like it. People come in thinking they have some sense of ownership of this site. Best attitude one can have toward Hybridz is you are only quests here at the owners discretion. Once you accept that fact life here can proceed without unnecessary drama.

If you do a search you will see what I mean. The end is always the same.

  8. got pulled over last week...although i kinda deserved that

took a u turn around a center devider, and drifted the last half of the turn...cop siting there didn't like that too much...whoops!!

but i was as respectful and understanding as i could be and actually pulled over for him before he was behind me. Gave me a wreckless driving ticket, but no $$ amount. just have to tell the judge what happened lol.

hopefully it won't look too bad on my record...

You might ask around. Not sure about where you live but certain tickets, like wreckless driving, insurance companies interpret as drunk driving.

That one might be worth doing what ever you have to do to get it reduced.

  9. You obviously don't use the search function much.

It is not so much answering the same question over again. It is sifting through the thousands of nonsense threads to get to the good ones.

I agree with treating the new people with respect. Telling someone to search should not be done in a condescending manner.

but a lot of times telling someone to search is doing them a favor. If the people haven't read the FAQ's then they are simply not going to get a complete answer.

  10. Go to the summit racing or JEGS web site. They sell every manner of AN to tube to hose connector imaginable. And it is all indexed very well, especially on the summit site.

Home Depot stuff is not AN, it is JIC. The flaring angle is the same but from reading countless posts there can be subtle differences in the threads.

The only real problem with the JEGS aluminum AN stuff is costs can add up really quick. That was one of the bigger suprises in my build, the final cost of all the fuel line stuff.
