  1. Getting a 95 and up will get you an improved optispark distributor. Those suckers are expensive to fix. If given a choice, get the 95 or later.

There is one on ebay, complete with tranny, for $1300.

it is out of a Camaro so it will have aluminum heads with 275 HP. The Caprice motors are iron heads with less HP.

  2. I have refinanced cars and my credit score is 797. Can't hurt it too much.

And I think bastaard525 is looking for a shorter term loan, not longer.

There should be no penalty for paying on a long term loan like it was a short one. The advantage of doing it that way is you have the flexibility of dropping down to the minimum payment should you have a rough month. If there is really no penalty for paying extra, then don't refinance unless you can get a better interest rate.

Call around and shop for deals. The place we refinanced with said they were going to assume the loan for no cost with the same payoff period we already had. The interset rate was so much better it dropped our payment by something like $50 a month. An absolute no-brainer.

  3. Do you want a JDM Spec car,

    or a chinese rickshaw ??"

Kind of an amazing statement. 30 years ago "Made in Japan" was a euphemism for cheap, low quality junk.

I suppose in 30 more years we will all be clamoring for the Chinee spec merchandise and not that cheap, Pakistani crap.

  4. Of course, a brake line could get severed too and create a bad situation too. Just imagine a scenario where you only a one front brake functioning and you need to brake HARD...the faster, the scarier.

    ????

If a brake line gets severed, then what is a dust shield going to do you keep you from losing hydraulic pressure to both front brakes? How is either front brake going to work?

I would think the issue would be road debris damaging the rotor or mud/liquid causing it to become slippery.

  5. I just did the 4x4 upgrade this weekend. Like Trevor says, the spacers are needed between the hub and the rotor hat to align the rotors inside the S12W calipers. Alex's pic shows them pretty clearly.

The stock steel wheels did rub slightly on the innermost cooling fin of the 4x4 caliber. I imagine a thin (may 1/4 inch) spacer between the wheel and the hub would fix that. But 60 seconds with a die grinder on the innermost caliper fin yielded adequate clearance.

Nice, meaty looking brake set but heavy as all get out.

  6. "A couple of years ago" might have been during the time of the DC sniper. In that case your probably were not he only one who got rousted.

I *think*, from watching cops on TV, that they are allowed to search for weapons if they have reason to suspect weapons or to guarentee their own personal safety. A report of an armed man is most likely considered probable cause. And a hand gun will fit in a purse.

  7. You might have accidentially connected two lines that shouldn't be connected. Or you could have a short somewhere (anywhere) in one of the lines. Had the same problem on my truck when a trailer light harness went bad.

If your lucky you will check your new wiring against the schematics and find your mistake. If you are unlucky, you will chase through all the wiring in a 30 year old wirig loom to try and find the chaffed wire.

    Good luck.

  8. Damn John, good link. Wish I would have had that when I lived in CA.

Although I didn't see anything in there about a "locked box". Hard to drive to the gun range in a Z with a range bag and not have both the ammo and gun within immediate reach.

But I did learn you can carry a loaded pistol in your car if you live in the car. Or are camping. Or if you are a zookeeper.

Not to get political, but is actually quite easy to get a concealed weapons permit in LA. All you need to do is be a movie star and meet the Culver City chief of police at a party. Every now and then the LA times publishes the concealed weapons list and it was 90% Hollywood types. Joey Bishop can carry a gun, but someone running a check cashing buisness in south central can't.

  9. Huge difference between California and Florida.

I am interested to hear the answer myself.

The biggest problem I have with gun laws is most times even the cops don't know what is right. Believe me, I have asked and different cops give different answers.

I know in some states, even with a concealed weapons permit, you would have been in violation since the gun wasn't on your person.

Also you don't ever have to agree to let a cop search your car. If he asks and you agree, then you have just given him permission and thereby waived whatever rights you might have had. If they have probable cause (for whatever reason), then they are going to search it anyway. But you don't have to give permission.

Have to wonder why cops ask questions like that. Couldn't have been for his safety since he already had you sitting there while he ran the plates.

    You can always claim amnesia.

  10. I thought MikeJTR said in one post that a T56 cross member can be made out of a flat piece of stock since the T56 mount comes down about an inch farther than the T5 setup. It was in a post where some guy mounted his JTR supplied cross member upside down to get it to work.

  11. You will pay a pretty heavy premimum for the LT4. Corvette guys want those motors so they are pretty pricey. You can probably pick up a set of AFT heads and hot cam kit for the difference in price you are going to pay for the "LT4"

Late last year LT1/t56 combos were going unsold on ebay for $1800. Guess fparts rasied their prices

Here is a complete motor (no trans) for less than your local long block.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-Camaro-Z28-Trans-Am-LT1-5-7-Liter-Engine-Complete-80_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33615QQitemZ8034311206

You can get a complete iron head LT1 with auto trans out of a caprice for less than the $1500 long block. Then bolt up the aluminum AFR heads with hot cam and be way ahead power wise for less money.

  12. Price also matters on if they have one on hand and If they don't then it woul include shipping cost. Up here in alaska I was quoted $375.

But everything must cost more in Alaska. Just use your oil check :)
