  1. The $6.85 rubber boot is the one at the very bottom of the shift lever. The one that bolts or press fits to the transmission tunnel is about $20.00 from places like MSA or Black Dragon. Sorry if I added to the confusion. Dennis
  2. Just $6.85 at my local Datsun (Nissan) dealer 10 days ago - no shipping charge. Dennis

    BMW Seats

I couldn't find the info I needed after an archive search, so I hope someone can help. I'm interested in installing BMW 318/325 seats in my '71 Z and want to know how they mount. Flat on the floor - remove factory Z mount points? On the existing mounting area with adapters? How much fab work is needed? I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has made the switch, Thanks, Dennis
  4. OK, let's try this again. If you read my last post, you'll notice in the 3rd sentence that I mention how to find wholesale suppliers for products - could be radiators, steering wheels, or garage doors. Looks like you're somewhere in the Inland Empire based on your location identifier, so try this Google search by typing the words seen below: wholesale radiator san bernardino You'll get 10,300 "sourcing" links as a result. Not all will be what you need, but serveral certainly are. If you have a resale permit for your three skateboard companies, it probably won't work for buying wholesale car parts. So, you'll have to get another one so you can buy "wholesale" and without paying sales tax. Good luck with the venture. Keep us posted. That will be another $15, please. Dennis
  5. Start by getting a Resale permit from the CA Franchise Tax Board. That will enable you to buy your material at wholesale and collect sales tax on all products you sell. Do a Google or Yellow Pages search for the types of supplies you'll be needing and the wholesalers who can provide them. Make lots of calls and supplier visits in person so they can put a face to a name. Check with your local community on if a business license is needed. Open a business checking account, you'll probably need a ficticious business name statement established by posting in the local newspaper. Always give more than you promise, ship promptly, and price it right. That business model has worked for me and others. That will be $25, please. Dennis
  6. X64v, MSA is a great source and I buy just about everything from them. Unfortunately, they're an hour and 45 minute drive away and the Nissan dealer was only 5 minutes away. Surprisingly, Nissan was less expensive and no shipping fee. I'm still amazed that they had the shift lever end bushing and the inner boot in stock when I went there last Saturday. Anyway, all's well that ends well and I'm about to take the Z for a run before the temp hits 110 degrees here today. Shifting no longer feels like stirring a big bowl of oatmeal with a wooden spoon. Dennis
  7. Update: The Nissan dealership parts department was able to get the pin bushings in just two days. I put everything back together this morning and it shifts like new. I should have done this about 25 years ago. Total cost for all parts: $17.66 Dennis
  8. As happens all too often, reading a thread inspired me to check my Z this morning. What a series of surprises. The inner rubber shift lever boot was missing, the shift lever pivot pin had been replaced with a pin that is threaded on the end and secured with a nut, the pin bushings were totally gone, and the bushing at the end of the shift lever was also missing. First stop - my local neighborhood Datsun Dealers's parts department, open on Saturdays. For some reason, they've replaced the Datsun sign out front with a Nissan one. The inner shift lever boot was in stock as was the bushing that snaps onto the end of the shift lever. I don't know who was more surprised, the guy behind the counter or me. The pin bushings are listed, but not in stock. He'll check nationwide on Monday. If they're NLA, I'll go with the brass Chrysler door bushings. The big lesson learned is that the parts guy is willing to hunt down parts for my old Z. The other lesson learned is that not all of the mechanics I've taken my Z to since 1971 have bothered to to the job right. Discovering missing pieces and cobbled fixes, even in out of sight places, is disappointing. Dennis
  9. I don't think double sided tape, or glue, is the answer if you plan on them staying in place for long. You'll want to bond them on. Nice look if you want them body colored, but I still prefer the bolt-on in contrasting black. Dennis
  10. If all you'll be wearing is "a black baseball cap with NVH logo on it", I'd also recommend a good SPF 60 sun screen in certain areas. Dennis
  11. I like the look. And I see, by reading the auction info sheet, that the "Number of getting on capacity" is "Doubles". Can't go wrong with that. Dennis
  12. That was a nice tribute to your dad. My dad was my "go to" guy and I still rely on his toolbox 30 years after he died. I still always seem to find the right nut, bolt or screw somewhere in the bottom of the box when I need one. Cherish the memories and pass along what he taught you. Dennis
  13. Sometimes, that's all that matters. Dennis
  14. Anyone have a picture of one in an early Z with factory faceplate? If so, any problems mounting the antenna power switch? Dennis
  15. The big question in refinancing is always, "How long do you plan to live in the house before moving to another?". If what you save on monthly payments over that period of years is equal to, or greater than, what it costs to do the refi deal, go for it. How many people do you know who have actually payed off their home loan and own their house free & clear? The majority of us make payments forever. Dennis
  16. I like the look of the front, although it's a little weak on turn signals. Dennis
  17. I use latex gloves when doing body work with filler or fiberglass. Saves wear & tear on the hands at clean up time. Nice change from years ago. Dennis
  18. When I go to my local parts store to order something for my 240Z, I pronounce Datsun as Knee-sahn or they have no idea what kind of car I'm talking about. Dennis
  19. Nice looking fenders, doublexl240z. How do you deal with the gas filler door? Race car only? Dennis
  20. 914 seats have a high back with built-in headrest - all one piece, except removeable seat cushion, not a "bolt in" headrest as shown. Dennis http://www.porsche914.org
  21. Has anyone notified The Datsun Heritage Museum? I'm sure the curator wouldn't want to miss out on this opportunity. Forget the Tucker, there were 49 of them. This is a one of a kind real deal! Dennis
  22. Factor in the weak Austrailian dollar and do the price conversion - it's time to go shopping Downunder! $1 Au = .66 US Dennis
  23. With the current "state of the economy", it will be interesting to see if prices come down to bring in business or remain the same due to people repainting the old jalopy rather than buying something new. A local shop dropped their quote for painting my Audi 25% between August and December due to the slowdown in their business. Dennis
