You'll have no trouble selling them when /if you do. This seems to be a "hot" topic at the moment because of the sets on ebay. They probably wouldn't be so rare & expensive if a couple thousand people didn't each have two or three sets stashed away for possible use some day.

Really bad shape needing everyhing - like body work, engine/trans, brakes, etc. - maybe $2,000 to $4,000. Mine started as a very solid shell with no drivetrain and went through a 14 month professional build adding all new mechanical components, interior, paint, wheels/tires. Nicely done examples are bringing $20-25K if they started life with a V8 ID#.

Everyone is looking for that $500 perfect car that's been abandoned in a garage. I have a '66 Mustang fastback in the driveway and get knocks on the door all the time from potential buyers who want to pay about 25% of what it's worth. Everyone is looking for a bargain.

Nice clean look. I recently got some "pick-a-part" Hyundai flush mount side markers, but these look like a nice alternative, also.

What car was the donor for the side marker lights?

Crankshaft Bolt Ever Back Out...Consider This. Pic
psdenno replied to slownrusty's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
Mine backed out about 25 uears ago at 112,000 miles. Fortunately, it was in town following a 60 mile drive on the Freeway. I found the drive pulley across the street, called AAA, a shop put it all back together. I didn't know it was common with the Z, thought I was unique ) -
I've had the California Historic Plates for well over 10 years - not on my 1971 204Z but on my 1970 Porsche. I did it mainly to beat the SMOG test requirement at the time. For a while I ran it as my daily driver and never had a problem, although I was always paranoid that the same cop might see me day after day at around the same time. Had I been stopped, I was ready to say that I was mapping a route for an upcoming car club road rally. Go for the plates!

Your old dryer probably needs replacement - like 15 yeas ago, so it's probably best not to use it. The ARA system was an aftermarket add-n, not a factory piece as far as I know. I put one on my '71Z in '72. The ARA dealer at that time was the local Chevie dealership in Topeka, KS. Are you still running the original compressor? Mine was a big honkin' York that I've removed in anticipation of installing all new components with a smaller rotary compressor.

Curious...Which Income Bracket Do You Guys Fall In?
psdenno replied to slownrusty's topic in Non Tech Board
It's interesting to learn what folks on the list are currently earning when they buy their first "Z" - there appear to be quite a few students. I was making $7,235 a year as a 1st Lt in the AF when I bought my 1971 240Z new off the showroom floor. Our family income in now about 30 times that amount and I still have the same "Z". Interesting World, -
Movin to minnesota? who and whats there to do?
psdenno replied to cpt jack's topic in Non Tech Board
It will be quite a change from Las Vegas. However, your alternative of joining the military is a bit extreme. Having lived & worked in Duluth in my "growing up" years and also having put in 20 years in the military (AF). I suggest Duluth as the better choice - less chance of being shot, but not out of the question:grin:. There's an active car scene. Road rally, ice racing, parking lot events. Just be aware that your "Z" will be eaten by the road salt if you drive it in the winter. Dennis 1971 240Z Original Owner -
Get a roll of masking tape and play around with placing your bullet mirrors on the fenders. Start with the diagram in this tread as a guide and then adjust location based on what works best for you from the driver's seat. Shouldn't be too difficult if you decide to stick with the bullet type.

We probably all dream of building our own car. It would be interestiing to know the percentage of sold kits that actually get built in home garages. The company that restored my '66 Mustang 2+2 GT several years ago also built Cobras. As was mentioned earlier, make sure you know your painter and upholterer if you're farming that work out. I think I would do one car on "spec" while I toiled at my day job before packing it in and becoming a full time builder. There are way too many kit cars sitting on lots in my upscale village - Porsche 356 and Cobra kits. Live the dream and let us know how it goes.

Wait until they find out they can do more damage behind the wheel of a car than with a spear - then we're all in trouble. -

That's what happens when you let monkeys watch violence on TV and listen to RAP music. Where will it all end? -
November 1971 - I had been living in the Philippines for a year and a half and was returning to the states by cruise ship. The ship made a couple stops in Japan and I took a side trip to Tokyo. Strolling through the Ginza, I saw a 240ZG on display in a large store display window. It was stunning. Returning to the States I needed a car as I had sold my Pontiac GP in the Philippines. I found a 240Z at a dealership in Minneapolis. At that time there was about a nine month waiting list to get the car - or you could buy off the floor for a premium over sticker. Sticker was about $3,600 and I paid $4,375 including tax & license. I still have the Z and recently pulled it out of a 15 year storage. My son will be driving in a year and we're making a joint project out of the refurbishmant of the car. My dad and I worked on the car 35 years ago and it's a pleasure to work on it again with my son. He looks forward to driving it to high school. I think if my dad had given me a 36 year old car when I was in high school, I might not have been so excited. But the Z is different. After 36 years of ownership, the Z is still a very cool car. Dennis

Porsches didn't use Paxtons, although my 1963 Studebaker Avanti came from the factory with one installed. Make sure it turns freely as the ball drive is the weak point, check the fluid level with the dipstick to the right of the Paxton sticker on the case. The belt tensioning pully looks a little rough. If the blower is bad, it can be rebuilt - although a bit pricey. Dennis '71 240Z, Original Owner 1963 Avanti R2 1970 Porsche 914-6

Look at the things that can kill, or strand, you - like fuel & brake lines, all brake & clutch cylinders, belts. I just pulled my '71 240 out of 15 years of storage in April and replaces all the tires, fuel/water/brake hoses, belts, brakes, and clutch hydraulic pieces. It fired right up and runs nicely. Have fun! Dennis '71 Z, Original Owner

I'd be a little concerned about a Z sitting in the weeds - rust could be a big problem. Add in the price drop from $2500 to $1000 and it sounds like if anyone looked at it in person, they weren't interested. Dennis '71 Z, Original Owner

I pulled my '71 Z out of storage in April. It had been there without runing for 15 years. Yes, 15. Changed all the fluids, put in a new battery, added gas and it fired up and ran like new. Have since changed tires, all hoses, all brake & clutch cylinders, new spark plug wires and ignition parts. Either I was lucky or the Z is an amazing car. Dennis 71 Z Original Owner

Sounds like you've got a good plan, already. You didn't mention taking off bumpers, emblems, and side marker lights - not sure how Maaco deals with those if you leave them on. Since you're in a humid area, rattle can primer bare metal to keep new rust from starting while you're working on it. You might want to use a light color primer over a dark color primer so you can find high & low spots when you're sanding. Just scuffing the existing paint should be fine for your purposes. Post some pictures as you go. I'd like to see a $300 Maaco paint job. Dennis '71 Z Original Owner
