Been there on mistake #2. Had to fly cut my whole S/C mounting surface flat again. Nice work, I love the repourposed extinguishers. Been trying to figure out how to use two as 'gas tanks' or propane bottle holders on a motorcycle for years. The extinguishers are still sitting in my scrap bin though....

FYI, just found another pile of old reciepts as I was cleaning, the coolant temp adapter kit was P/N EQU9851, it came with four adapters I think, and it ran me $10 at O'Reilly's auto parts.

Took me almost 7 months, but it was fuel injection, reprogramming the ECU, pull clutch issues and designing / making all my own engine mounts, tranny mounts etc that really hung me up for time. The beauty of the GM swaps is that you can have all the mounts made up (or purchased) and ready ahead of time (which is imperative if you are currently driving your car, of course). As a side note, a V8 Z, depending on how it's setup, can be a very enjoyable and practical daily driver. My wife has a Jeep, I have the Z. No backups. I didn't take shortcuts when I did anything, although it was done on a tight budget, and it has been extremely reliable. My odometer (Ford POS) isn't working, but I would guess I have about 10k in the last two years since doing the swap, and have yet to be broken down on the side of the road. On the flip side, a non OD transmission paired up with some 4.11 gears would make a terrible daily driver. Always comes down to what you want to end up with, a driver or a racer. PS, Don't wait for a major failure unless it's seriously inevitable. If it's still in good running shape, you should be able to make some money back on it. ($300-500 engine tranny? Not huge $$, but it'll buy you more than if it's blown up!)

Can I get a heads up on this... he he he.

Holy Moley . Can you imagine having to read and be the 'allmighty' for the forum? What a job that would be! What do you do then with all the members who are here already with bad grammer and little knowledge? In all fairness, it's fun to blow smoke about this stuff, but is any thing like this feasable? I try my best to be responsible and give only well researched answers, etc, but I wouldn't have passed the HybridZ101 admission test back in the day when I first joined. (Second car ever owned, not a mechanic, not a racer, etc....) I think the resume mentioned by RebekahsZ would be interesting, however isn't that what the user's profile is for? I often look at previous posts, threads started, and whatever other information was volunteered in their bio. (However as I just tried to check 'jnewby's profile as an example, the 'About Me' tab gives the following humorously ironic result, "Error: Could not load template 'tabAboutMe' from group 'profile'".) Jnewby, which Mustang forum does this? I want to see how it's laid out and see what you have to go through to register. (I have a '65 Mustang and a Mustang engine in my Z, so at least ownership shouldn't be an issue.)

Awesome! Electrical gremlins at their best! PS. Might want to take notes on your wires in the center console too (especially if you have a dozen that don't go anywhere, but you've traced them down) My old masking tape labels have fallen off the wires a from 6yrs ago (when I had a crappy haz light problem myself) and I had to re-figure out all the wires last time I was working on the radio.
-
Sounds like you have either a short, or quite possibly a bunch of corrosion somewhere creating a partial short. Open up the switches and check inside. Did you do your check with the switch plugged in, or unplugged? Try removing the haz switch from the circuit, the blinker can and the haz can one at a time while you're checking that voltage.
-
I had much better luck taking apart the haz switch and cleaning that. I had the opposite problem with my 280z when I brought it home (haz, no blinkers) and it turns out the haz switch 'turns off' the blinker circut (so you can't have the blinkers and haz circuits fighting each other). I cleaned mine up and it's worked great the last 6yrs. Baking soda mixed with a little water, old toothbrush works great for cleaning everything up in there. Then, a dab of dielectric grease makes sure you won't have that problem again, and lubricates the switch contacts so they don't wear out.

Ok, I'm not sure how this forum is setup on a technical level, but what would it take to have a technical section directly linked to Hybridz like they have over at the Rangerstaion? I think the stickies/FAQ sections are a good place to start, but you still end up weeding through arguments, and a lot of 'wordy' discussion, even on the posts that are specifically built to be a "This is what I did, how I did it and the parts I used" type of post. I still refer to the Rangerstation's tech page as it's got lots of great info compiled into one easy to use page. (Kind of like AtlanticZ) Is something like that even a possibility on this site, or is it just setup too differently? I think a tech section could kill 50% of the posts "I have no spark" etc bologna that frustrates lots of people here. The other 50%...well I guess we could refer them to the tech section and lop off one of their hands or something.

4.6L Ford DOHC modular motor in my 240z

Why the dual zone A/C? Are you adding extra seats in the back? Making it a station wagon Z? He he. -

I am really curious to see how your exhaust goes. That was a PITA on mine. My engine was offset ~1" to the passenger side, which made the driver's side simple, the passenger side exhaust...not so much. PS. I must have been tired in my pun post too. -

Ha. Bad Pun. But then again, aren't they all puns bad puns? -
I can't believe how many bikes/cars I've gotten over the years that problems were traced back to somebody's twisted together, and duct/masking taped wiring connections!! WTF PEOPLE??

Yes, throbbing=droning etc. (couldn't think of the right term) The thrush I have I think is basically a Flowmaster 40 series knockoff. Very similar looking, and I'm guessing similar sounding as well (for a bit less $ too). I have the tailpipe extending to the rear bumper, but I have a 90° turndown, so I'm not sure if that is bouncing sound back at me or not. (Never tried it w/out the turndown)
-
I have a single 3" to a thrush welded, chambered muffler, and it sounds pretty good during acceleration and at idle, but it's a bit too loud when you're cruising down the highway with it throbbing. If you're planning on doing a lot of street driving don't be afraid to put some quiet mufflers on it. I need to find a quieter muffler for mine.

Yeah, they seem go to hand in hand. (Great minds think alike, etc.) I had a good friend in SC that when I met him, he and his dad both had 240's and he was building a 65 Mustang for his wife. My wife's Mustang is on the road, pretty much all restored, runs great etc. And I have a 351w + 4sp I just got, 8.8 rear end, etc etc. Looks like it'll be back off the road for a little while.... Why don't all cars just come from the factory with the right engines. Oh boy Detroit, maybe someday you'll learn. I didn't know anyone offered those shifters as an aftermarket unit. I found lots of guys who were making them for Miata swaps, and other T56 transplants. There is NO WAY I can fit something that big under the stock console unfortunately. I really wanted to run the B&M shifter that I got at a U Pull ($7!!!!) but it was entirely too large. All of the Ford guys say to run an aftermarket one with adjustable stops, as many of the blown T45/T56 trannies are due to overshifts with the stock Borg Warner/Tremec shifter. In the end, I made my shifter a 2 piece unit. If you follow the shifter handle down about 2" on the straight part of the shaft, I cut it, and made a coupling/clamp that fits under the boot. This was to get the shifter handle up higher, and to make getting the console in and out easier. Shifting feels great, I was REALLY surprised it wasn't all wonky.

Oooooh cool. That means you wouldn't have to have your ECU flashed to get rid of the PATS stuff! And you would be part of a very exclusive club

3" Exhaust... for NA modified engine. Muffler options?
yellowoctupus replied to inline6's topic in Exhaust
John, that is a GREAT find, thanks for posting that up here! A few years back I was doing research for school on exhaust systems and was surprised how hard it was to find even mildly technical information; or finding only NASA level stuff! (Yes, I actually found old NACA 50's files on Jet exhausts. Not what I was looking for, but good reading nonetheless.) I wonder if there's some place within this forum that we can put files like this (or links) as a technical library. I used to have a Ford Ranger, and The Ranger Station has a GREAT technical library I wish we had here on hybridz. The Ranger Station Stickies are great in their own way, but the forum format isn't the greatest for a lot of our 'how to guides' and information like this. -
Just my 2¢ here, but I'd keep the fuel injection if you're planning on doing a supercharger, and are planning on driving it a lot. (For a drag car only, probably not TOO hard to tune, since it's basically WOT.) Tuning with an aftermarket ECU would be significantly easier than a carb'd SC setup. Yes, it has been/can be done, but in the long run I think it may prove to be more of a headache than setting up a trigger wheel and a Megasquirt to the fuel injection you already have. (And you can buy the Megasquirts prebuilt now too, if you're not into doing all the soldering etc yourself.) And as a side note to the earlier 5.4/ 4.6 comment, I've seen the spacer plate adapter things, but I haven't heard very good things from the guys on the SN95 boards who do the 5.4 swap. Out of curiosity, why would you flash the 5.4 program onto a 4.6 ECU? Why not just use the 5.4 ECU in the first place? Either one will need the PATS (passive anti theft system) disabled (reflashed). When I did my 4.6 swap, I couldn't find a mod motor ECU that didn't have the PATS on it (unless you wanted to use the older EDIS spark module, then you could use the Lincoln ECU with no flashing required.
-
Well, I've got close to 8k miles on the swap now I think. I'm looking for work right now, so I'm trying to really buckle down and finish some of the stuff I've been meaning to do the last few years (v8 swap excluded). My Dad always laughs when he's visits me; I think he's only been able to ride in it once. It's always in pieces for a supercharger, or engine swap, or transmission work or something else ridiculous. You're right, I probably should just drive it and enjoy for a while.

3" Exhaust... for NA modified engine. Muffler options?
yellowoctupus replied to inline6's topic in Exhaust
The same goes for turbo / chambered mufflers (you get what you pay for, and look inside your pipes before installing it, you may see things you don't like. ) I was trying to decide between a Cherry Bomb or Thrush 3" muffler, and ended up with the latter after seeing a 'open box' Cherry Bomb on Ebay. Cherry Bomb's advertising doesn't show a picture of the 3" , probably because as the IN pipe goes into the muffler, it necks down to 2.5" !! So internet/ magazine buyer beware, make sure you know what EXACTLY your model looks like before you buy it! -
My wife agrees it's better than boozing and chasing women, so she lets me spend a ridiculous amount of time in the garage. Now that I shimmed up the engine mount on the passenger's side, the exhaust manifold doesn't vibrate into the frame, and in turn my foot no longer falls asleep after a 20min drive. Nonetheless I do love cruise, as I have fairly bad speed regulation (normally to the high side....) Thanks for the props, I'm kinda whittling down the really neat projects, but I still have some maintenance items and a few more cosmetics to knock off my list. (Bushings, struts, paint/install the rear spoiler, new front carpet, finish up my gauges, align the headlights...hmm...wow. I need to spend more time looking at other people's projects and get some ideas for more work!)
