  1. ya I havent check it yet but I am sure it is almost non-existant! thats ok it will motivate me to go for a fuel cell. plus its not a sturctural part and it doesent rain much here. hey I see it as weight reduction.
  2. well I bit the bullet and went into the owner of the Zs office and pretended to make casual convo about it. I asked him when the last time he had seen it was and he confirmed what I had thought. he hasent seen it since he parked it. I asked him if he knew about the hatch window and he had no idea. I said he should go take a look at it and he thought it was a good idea. he asked me what I thought it was worth and kinda dodged the question and then it came, he asked me if I wanted it. I said I was considering it and he said he would go have a look and we would talk. so we will see what happens and how cheap I can get it for. I am pretty sure he is under the impression that it is in better shape than it is. so I think I can get a better deal than $500 on it. I am really excited and its all I can think about. maybe I will take a trip out there tonight and use a forklift to pick it up so I can check the frame rails more extensivly.
  3. the car has been in central cali all its life. probably one of the best climates for keeping a car from becoming a rust box. it does have some surface rust but from what I can tell that is the extent of it. the floorboards are in perfect condition. as for towing it home, I would just leave it at work and put it under a tarp. then when I wanted to work on it get it into the shop where I have every tool I need and a roof over my head. I am really starting to fall in love with this ugly duckling. as far as money goes its not really an issue. I work full time and live at home. this car would be around for a long while anyway so the money will always be there. I have 2 other cars I can drive at the moment and one of them is as reliable as hell so I wont have to worry about this thing not running. I think it will be fun and a learning experience to work on. I have a ton of time on my hands and I am incredibly bored on the weekends so this should fill my life quite nicly. the guys can always help me work on it. =)plus the loss isnt that huge if I never spend time on it. I think I will talk to the owner and see what we can work out. I dont think he has seen it in about 5 years so we will see what he has to say about it once he sees the shape its in. thanks again guys.
  4. here is a clickable link... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2436031180&category=6187
  5. thanks a ton. thats what I was hoping to hear haha. the guy who owns it doesent know much so I am going to show him the bad stuff and try to low ball him I think. although I cant go too low cause he is one of my bosses and the owners son. I would be completly replacing the hatch from the jy cause it is a bit banged up too. the tires look good, just flat. I dont care what the interior is like and would want a racing seat so there goes that stuff. I dont care if the heater works and would actually take it out. it doesent get that cold around here and I can always keep a jacket in the car. would do aftermarket struts anyway. paint would be down the road but would just be maaco flat black or somthing. so this could stay a cheap project. thanks for the advise. I think I might go through with it now. ill talk to my dad and see what he thinks (he had a 240z with tripple webbers and the works back in the day). he has been saying its a bad idea but ill try to convince him. thanks again. any other input would be greatly appreciated as well.
  6. thanks for all the advise guys. went and had another look at the car this morning and took some pics too. it is really ugly but pretty rust free which is pretty much all I am looking for. it ran when it was parked and the wiring problems I heard about is because some wires are hanging out of the console a bit I think. but it should be alright. I am looking to make this an autocross car one day and dont care about looks or interior so it seems perfect. needs alot of cleaning up but other than that it looks alright to me. the floorpans are in execellent shape. the framerails look pretty decent too. no rust under the battery tray either. ok well here are the pics... http://midnights.thexpresidents.com/images/workz/workz.html
  7. thanks for your input. and so fast too. I have been reading about Zs for over a year now and helping my friend (inZane240) with his. so I do have some knowledge about them just not much experience. I am not looking to get it to great condition just running condition with a turbo motor. I dont really care what the body looks like or the interior. I just want it to run and not have alot of rust problems that require extensive work to fix.
  8. ok here is the deal. I have been saving money and looking for an affordable Z for quite some time now. but this whole time one has been just under my nose. One of the sales managers at my place of work is selling his old junker for $500ish. It is a 71 240z, just what I am looking for! It does deserve the cheap price though. It has a smashed hatch window, trashed interior, from what I hear some wiring issues, and who knows if it runs. I am pretty sure it is fairly rust free. I have access to it (its sitting out at work), so I will go have a look at it tomorrow and maybe take some pictures. I have very little actual experience working on cars, but I am dying to learn. I would like to assume worst case scenario before I make any commitment to this. Lets say I had to re-wire the whole thing...is this a doable job for someone who is inexperienced? I also plan to do a turbo swap eventually, so a running engine isnt a huge problem because it can just sit while I wait to do the turbo swap. So is this a worthwhile project? My dad says I shouldn't do it cause I wont be able to do it or will get discouraged and stop working on it and that I should just save more and get one thats already done. But I am fairly confident about it. Would the people who have been through this kinda thing suggest I go through with it or advise against it?
  9. ok in order to figure this out you need to learn about dynamic compression. the max static compression (10:1 kinda deal) you can run on pump gas depends on the duration of the cam. this is where the dynamic compression forumla comes into play. I was very curious about all this about a year ago and I learned a ton from this message board. let me try to point you in the right direction. first read these two articles. http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/DynamicCR.html http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/cam-tech-c.htm if you dont know what they are talking about when it comes to the cam stuff or are just new to how cams work considering all the specs then read this as well. it will clear things up alot. you might have to read it a few times to fully understand it though haha (same with the stuff posted above) read all 8 pages of this... http://www.newcovenant.com/speedcrafter/tech/camshaft/1.htm also what will help A TON! is to do the following search on this site... search for "dynamic and compression" (the and makes sure the results have both words in them instead of one or the other) and for the author put "grumpyvette" and do the search in the chevy v8 forum. grumpyvette is a retired engineer and he knows everything there is to know about how engines work and the physics of it. plus he is a really really nice guy and posts tons of info on it all the time. he will also answer any tough question you can throw at him. so that should get you started and busy for the next few weeks heh. hope that helps although it doesent directly answer your question.
  10. I had a computer I had built in my car to play mp3s for awhile. I built a really small computer and set it up in the trunk. I had no display at all. I had the keyboard programed so a different key would go to the next song, turn random on and off, skip through songs, etc.. it was an awesome setup and with 4k mp3s you never hear the same song twice. I could also hit j and type in a song name and jump to a specific song. most of the time the passanger just held the keyboard and hit whatever I wanted them to hit or they could search for what song they wanted to listen to. I took it out when I started to try to sell my car. I think I will put it back in though it was a ton of fun. I really do suggest doing the laptop mp3 thing. but as they say the display might be smaller than you want it to be when it comes to tuning. but you could always pull the laptop out and use it when tuning. If you have the money go for it and dont forget to tell insurance about it so if it does get stolen you can get it back. also check out http://www.mp3car.com lots of good info and examples on that site even though it is a bit outdated.
  11. haha sounds like fun. but comon man...the american version of initial D? I liked it alot better in japaneese even though I had to read both seasons of it and all the movies heh. I dident like how they changed the names and stuff in the american version but oh well. keep spankin thoes big powered cars.
  12. I love listening to initial D when driving. but other than initial D I pretty much solely listen to punk. anything fast is great for driving. NOFX usually gets the blood flowing well. but older more rockish stuff is great too....the clash and the new york dolls come to mind. ooo cant forget about op ivy, minor threat (as mentioned earlier), gbh, the unseen, etc.
  13. haha yes he is 3 houses south of tokay on mills ave. I live on corbin ln which is a stones throw away from his house. I drive by there all the time and still get excited every time I see his garage open. oh by the way I see you around town some times and your car is really beautiful. its very clean and well done.
  14. the guy around the corner has one in his garage. I white one. It has been one of my fav cars since I was little at would drive by him washing it on summer weekends. These machines are beautiful.
  15. there is a pretty cheap place in Sacramento called venus auto. http://www.venus-auto.com check them out.
  16. great advise. it was the answer I was looking to hear. I guess Ill go out and pick it up now.

  18. wow thanks alot. "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" seems a bit much for me ($100 and almost 1000 pages) but the other book does seem promising. has anyone read the books I mentioned or have any other suggestions?
  19. How much boost do you plan to run? with a T3/T4, a nice intercooler, and 15lbs of boost I would think it would push 250+ hp fairly easily. I think with the whole safty thing your best bet is to keep him educated. As long as he takes it seriously, understands and respects its power then you should be ok. It will probally be his friends telling him to do the reverse donuts or to race everyone he sees at a stoplight that will get him in trouble. if you could drive it with him in it once its done and scare the crap out of him it might give him the respect for the car it deserves. Oh also his first speeding ticket will get him to drive more carfully. I know it did it for me.
  20. which ones do you guys suggest? I just finnished Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost" and loved it so I'm looking to expand my knowledge a bit more. I would like to find one that explains all componants, how they work, and how it affects the handling. I have seen 2 books that seem good but I don't really remember what each one contained. "How to make your car handle" and "Performance Handling/How to Make Your Car Handle, Techniques for the 1990s". Anyone know anything about these two books or have any other suggestions on this topic? thanks alot guys!
  21. that is so incredibly custom I can't believe it! that guy has a few bucks into that project.
  22. Its called the 4A-GTE. its not a production engine its a hybrid within itself. To build it you get a 4A-GZE from a supercharged mr2 or a late 80's early 90's corolla in japan and turbo it. This is a really good swap I think. The ealy version of the GZE had 8.0:1 compression, steel crank, and forged pistons. The later version had 8.9:1 compression and same bottom end, but it also had piston oilers. It is a very stong motor and can handle alot of boost. Plus all you would have to do is take off the supercharger, get an exhaust manifold, and replace the intake manifold with a normal 4A-GE one. Anoth swap you might want to consider is the 4A-GE 20v swap. 5 valves per cylinder and individual throttle bodies. This motor screams. The is an inporter here in Sacramento that sells the later model 4A-GZE motors with 175 hp for $1000 + shipping, and it is a full front cut from a corolla in japan. They also sell the 4A-GE 20v for $600, and that is everything you need for a swap including wire harness and ECU. Edit: Sorry forgot to post a link to the inporters site...here it is. http://www.venus-auto.com
  23. ok here is a link to all the pictures. I think I might have to have a talk with this youngin. I know to each their own but I'm entitled to my opinion right? heh. here you go. http://midnights.thexpresidents.com/images/UglyZ/
