LS1 is Illegal in CA!!! HELP mE!
cyrus replied to cyrus's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Ok I talked to the other tech Wes today... He sounds like he is 70 and on a ventalator, but he is way betther than Jeff. He said it was very difficult to pass a OBD II but it was possible. Are you sitting down...he said the LS1 should use the stock 240z exhaust....ahahahhahaahaahhaahhhhaahahaahaahahhahahahhhahahaahahahaahahahaahhaahaahahahahahahahahahahhahahhaahahahahahha...ahahh......hahahahah.haha ok i am ok. He told me this and that, but after I explain a huge amount of tech knowledge he got way cooler with me. After I told him the car should not need conveters due to its age amazingly he went along with that. The wheel sensors are now the only gray area.. Now if my car is a 71 I do not need inspections, but am i required to have engine certified? -

I think the o2 simulators are legal in place of the second o2 sensors. The simulators are illegal for use on a 1997-2003 camaros because they require cats to be legal. The whole purpose is make sure the car has cats. The 240 doesn't need them. -

Comrade, You must remember I live in the communitist republic of california (CRC). Smog laws always change. In 5 years I might have to smog. I have no interest in going all the way with this car if it is not legal. I know their is a law coming up to smog all cars up to 40 years old effective in 2005! -

Heres a little more info the car is a 71 240z i used the engine and trans from a 2001 ss six speed. The only thing I can think of is that when the crank trigger senses a misfire it makes sure that the car is actually missing by checking the wheels sensors to determine if you are on a "rough road". This is not an issue with automatics. Obviously I do not have the wheel abs sensors. I do know that chevy offers a ls1 to be used with a automatic trans in 1975 and older cars. I think because pre 1975 do not need Catalytics. I know this is the reason that the supra lost its manual trans in 96 is because they could not sense the rough road condition. -
I am so heart broken, you guys know how I busted my tail to do this car. I research everything so I could be legal and feel no guilt about my car. I want the car to be totally legal. Most people just want to not get caught. I know I will not get caught but that is not the point. Ok here goes... I called the Bearu of automotive repair here in california. THey do smog suff for Cali. There are two techs that answer questions jeff, and wes. I talked to jeff about the LS6 I was considering for a swap. He said ALL OBD II swaps were ILLEGAL because you could not swap over all the neccassary equipment. He said that the systems were chasis specific. He tried to stump me by asking if I had used the fuel tank. I have! Anyways he said it could not be done and was not legal. He said I needed to have the car certified and that that cost $5000 dollars. He was a jerk to me. Can anyone point me to some gov person that can make sense of this situation. I want to feel good about going 119 in the quarter again.
-
Start over huh... I think I could do the LS6 in a weekend. The viper rear will be a project though. Now Spiirit what quater mile times are you shooting for? I want to be able to beat an Ameritech McLaren. They run 11.3@125.3.
-
Here in Cali we drive 71mph. 3.36 in 6th would work fine. 3.07 maybe. But I am dreaming of a 3.54 posi with 275/40/17 slicks, the lightest flywheel, and a LS6. I want the front wheels off the ground and high 120's in the quarter!!!!! What happened to gear calculator on this site that was awesome!
-
Phantom I see 120mph in 4th on your car. I am already there. I think it should be 130mph so you have room to grow. 5 gear is unacceptable.
-
Well actually all this stuff is interdepentant... The differential determine the torque being put down. The tires have to handle that. Then the fenders have to accomidate the tires. And the real stinker is under stock fenders a 235 is all that will go under the front so you probable do not want to exceed 285 on the rear. Now with your flares that that is not an issue. With my viper suspension I could run 335 but that would dwarf the front and make its handling suck. Some times I can't win! ps I do not see any way to make the rears wheels match the front with the 6 lug rears!
-
With a "reasonable" suspension set up I am wondering how much tire is required to make first gear stick on 17's. 275, 315, 335,...? and at some point does it become useless due to the camber change.
-
Phantom, your funny, that with that 3.70 you will NEVER have traction except with slicks! I am going 3.07, but I think a 3.36 is ideal with good traction. Let me know how it works. 1st rear engine 2.62 * 3.70 * 340ft lbs = 3296 lbs of axle torque LS1 2.62 * 3.07 * 340ft lbs = 2735 lbs of axle torque LS1 2.62 * 3.07 * 400ft lbs = 3217 lbs of axle torque LS6

No LSD, one wheel wonder and not bracing. I think the rear arm bend inward under full steam giving the rear to much toe in. Tires are old 215/60/15 on 6.5" I got to get my Viper rear suspension put in!
-
Hey whats up, I am glad it is running. Get it to a drag strip quick. Dont just guesstimate the results. I want to know what it runs relative to mine. I am considering the LS6 now. I have axel hop too, but at the drags with the tires HOT. It stickes and runs 12.0 @119. My car has huge squat and rolls laterally back and forth under full power!

Maichor your vats is locking you out.

I bought a 95 Viper Rear suspension 4 the 240z
cyrus replied to cyrus's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
No it is a dana 44 and it is different than the corvette dana 44. Remember that do not break with 500 ft/lbs of torque and 460 hp on 345/25/18's in a 3350lb car. I hope it will hold with my LS1 and slicks. Wheelies here I come! Scottie the suspension does not tie to the differential, so I can mount the suspension anywhere I want. Then shorten the axles to fit. This may be too easy. The real problem is the viper is 6 lug on 4.5 inch. I may have to go to the furd bolt pattern. The holes alway are in the way for a redrill. -
In reference to my 12.0@119mph LS1 240z with 346hp. The engine is stock believe it or not. The exhaust is cast iron manifolds, with 2.5" pipes going to 2.25" C4 mufflers. Some one should check my math. The car is about 2400 +190 (me) and runs 119 mph. Do the cals off of the mph since traction is bad.

aluminum=yes 3.07 ratio -
The LS1 is still going. I just bought a 95 viper complete rear suspension and rear frame on ebay yesterday for the 240z. I still need a dash and roll cage. What are you other LS1 ers doing. Phantom, Jerminio, Maichor, etc. Darius you ready to race at Sears Point?
-
I have a LS1 240Z, it runs 12.0 at 119 mph. It is faster that a viper. I makes only 346hp. Now for you question, you think you want 700 hp. You must think of the larger picture. At my speeds I need a full cage, and traction is a horrible struggle. At you HP the car would be a unusable. Engine reliablility would suck. Be careful what you wish for. ps im back!

HOW MUCH $$$$$.$$? Is it a f body trans?

Can you predict my LS1 quarter mile time???

The tires are miss matched, from the salvage yard... The technique is more interesting: 1. I get them real hot. 2. I leave at like 800 or just above idle 3. I smoothly push the pedal down 4. I granny shift 2nd 5. The other gears I shift hard I wish other people ran manual trans. at the drags it is cool to chirp em at 100MPH scatter shields??? -

Now my problems is that if i get it to hook and work right, I think I am required to have a SFI flywheel shield. I do not know of any being sold...
