  1. Well, In my 383 (that also has Dart Iron Eagle heads except they're 215cc) I have an SLP 51010 which is a little under cammed. PERSONALLY I would have put a Comp XR282 and at the time I thought the SLP cam was about the same (as a 276hr) but come to find out with the valve openings and closings it's really not.

Now these are roller cams and you have a flat-tappet of course.

IF I WERE YOU I would retro-fit a roller cam and run an XR282, but I tend to favor smaller cams than most.

    Here's my SLP cam specs:

    dur @ .050 - 224/232

    1.5 Rocker - .490/.510

    1.6 Rocker - .522/.544

    Lobe Sep - 112deg

I think the conventional duration would be something like 280/284 which if you read between the lines it spends a large amount of time under .050 lift and that's kind of uh.. unigue.

Grumpy likes crane cams but I couldn't really tell you why. Here's a good thread and there are tons more from grumpyvette if you'd like a good read:

I run the XR282 with the AFR 190s and it is just awesome. However I have a 350 40 over. ZFAN was running the next size up cam in his car 383 I think a XR288? He said he likes it but wants to go a little bigger. The 282 is a good cam but I would think the 288 would be better with a 370 rear and 3000+ stall. I run a 3500 with auto 700R5 and 354 rear gears. Ive tried 411s and 370 as well...Cant beat the AFRS IMHO.

Ugh - the body color wheels are hideous and skinny! Need to rectify that as soon as some $$$ appear.

My GySgt has one here in Fuji. I like the way it looks....

  3. Thanks for all the kind words. Some observations after 10 days...

    1. People you don't know wave and say Hello everywhere you go.

    2. Safety check, new drivers lic., and reg.of my car with the pick-up of new plates was done in one day. This would/will never happen in CA.

    3. Two cars in front of you at a light is a traffic jam.

    4. For the safety check I had to go to a shop where they pulled my rear tires off ,adj. my rear drums, and adj. the e-brake all for no charge....:2thumbs:

    5. Went into a gas station and got some coffee. The counter person asked if it was a refill. I said no but does that mean it's free. She said no but you know what, yours is......Damn.

This has been one of my best moves I've ever made. Should of done this a year ago..:-)

I'm "fixing" to go to the track on Fri. night.........:burnout:

Oh COZY, by the way, if ya see a little miniature collie out there with the girls at the gate, it was mine. I gave it to them before I left and her name is LADY. Maybe you should ask them how lady is doing and let me know...my kids miss her!! Oh and those gals are pretty hot so take some water with ya....

  4. I am just amazed! Welcome to Angelo COZY! Well you may be a little lonely until I get there! I see that you already got noticed by a friend of mine (GENO)! It is a small town and be ready for others to ask you if you know me...hahaha. Im really stoked that your there. Can you imagine what fun it will be to drag side by side and taunt the others...well I forgot your supercharged so maybe not exactly side by side lol... have fun and if ya need anything or have questions, just ask or get with the awesome family at the track and they will help Im sure!

  5. I agree with Terry (Corzette). Getting parts for U.S. market V8's is difficult. It is like trying to get RB parts here in the U.S.

After coming back from Okinawa in 1987, I sent alot of parts back for my japanese friends. One had a 67 Firebird rag top with a 455.

The culture there is different as well when it comes to cars. Some of the stuff you would see in wrecking yards would make you cry. Here in the U.S. we tend to drive a car till the wheels literally fall off. There cars are just a commodity.

Funny how you could look at a car and tell it was owned by an American service person. A Japanese person would not own it once it reached a certain condition.

    Well said...!

  6. From the Japanese guys Ive talked to, they dont know much about them. Most of them think they are slow and cant compete with the Japanese cars. I think if all were known it may be a threat to the extremely overpriced market that Japan has for after market. When I was building my engine I couldnt find any support anywhere. Getting plugs or oilfilter was almost impossible. There a few American cars here and there but nothing to mention. The funny thing is alot of the young military guys get all caught up in the hype of Japan and forget there are other options. Literally spending thousands of dollars for minimal upgrades and then get stuck with selling it before they leave and losing most of the investments. I remember one guy telling me he ran 5 bars on his turbo and was running 10s in the quarter. Well since there is no quarter around, makes it kinda hard to believe, and 5 bars??. I saw the engine and it was barely holding together and oil was oozing from everywhere.

Bottom line I think has alot to do with the Japanese market and money to be made on available parts etc. Sometimes ignorance is bliss I guess. However, the ones who saw my car when I was in Okinawa thought it was pretty cool and I spanked a few nice turboed rides in the process on a budget motor.. Let the debate begin...:-D

  7. Congrats on your son being one of few, the proud.... My wife's office over looks the parade grounds, I see all the time and think about all those brave men that passed and reviews upon it. I on other hand get to help the injured service members at the Naval Medical Center, retired sailor myself. I climbed Mt Fuji one fine August day back in 2002, when I was stationed in Yokosuka...great days. Too bad you could not be here for the 29th of April the Westcoast Nationals at Motorsport in Orange is worth the time. As for San Diego being over crowded and dirty....well just like all large metro areas we got our nice parts and our not so nice parts....but over all there is not many finer U.S. cities than this one. The weather should be great, I am sure you are one proud Popa.

Thanks Montezuma, yeah I will climb it this year (I say that every year). I will be anxious to hit the beach!! Family day is on the 3rd so itll be cool seeing the base again...will bring back memories Im sure. I was in platoon 2016 in 1982 going thru MCRD.

    Terry

  8. Congrats! San Diego should be real nice this month.

I graduated from platoon 2134 Golf Company in June 1994 and it was HOT standing out there on the parade deck in my Alphas!

What MOS is he going to school for?

I bet it does get warm. He will be in Supply so he can have time to get some college in. Yeah population is what its about here near Tokyo...man sooooo many fricken people...

  9. Hey all, my son will be graduating from Marine Corps Bootcamp on 4 May, San Diego MCRD. I will be flying in for it and leaving on the 6th. I come in on the 2nd. Too bad I have to leave so soon, would like to meet any local Hybrid zers! He is in platoon 2134 Fox company...ooh Rahhh!!!! Im sure Diego will be a much needed break from snow topped Mt Fuji! Wish I could hit some junk yards....hahahahahahaha...

  10. Here's a teaser of my new exhaust exit strategy. It's going to come out of the rear quarter panel right behind the driver's rear wheel. I may or may not be able to actually install it tomorrow, but I'd like to try and get it on sometime this week. I'm hoping that sending my gasses out the side will cut down on some of my in cab fumes.

    exhaustdump.jpg

Of course, this means that I'll no longer be using my rice can muffler...just an inline glasspack and my stylish new tip...

Hey Zappp! I was thinking the same thing awhile back since Im gonna mold in the corvette rear panel I got from Zfiberglass. I think it would be awesome, but I think I will put the flat chrome exit thingy on mine...sorta like Blue oval has just on the sides.....thoughts?

  11. I knew I liked you for some reason, Terry! You need to find yourself some Impul RS-IIIs like mine so we can match when you get back...

I'll even paint little trees on them for you...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......ok!!! By the way they looked just like the Mercedez emblem so made it ultra cool...

  12. Oh, I need to make some more of those, I actually just got another one: R30 Skyline race car! It was a prize for being one of the first to post pictures in the Datsun Garage at www.japanesenostalgiccar.com. I may put one together on Monday. That 190 kinda looks like you've got a 3-spoke on it. I thought I was in the minority around here with mine...

Yes Sir, they were Tri Stars!! Looked good on that car...

  13. Terry, I've said it before, and this just proves my point: You are the king of VIP!

Hey VZ how are ya buddy!! You crack me up. Are you sure you didnt get a degree in comedy?:D Hey what about those layouts for the penny racers? That was so awesome...is there a part three? Oh and I found a couple of pics of my old Mercedez 190E we talked about awhile back. Its got Herbalife stickers all over it in the pic but thats all I could find...haha. That was back in Lubbock Texas in 1997...

  14. Thank guys, well Ill be 1 more year for sure and we may try to extend another 2. There is a 5 year max here so I figure why not...kids love it and schools are good etc so...boooooo:roll: Gotta take care of the family ya know...wife is Japanese so she doesn't mind much although she is an American citizen now and thinks like I do...hahaha. She likes Texas better but is safer here for the kids school etc. My son graduates from Marine bootcamp 4 May in SanDiego! Looks like he is gonna make it easily. Anyhoot I will try to bring the engine and tranny etc with me if I can arrange the disassembly and shipping etc. Bringing back the whole car is a little too diificult and more than I wanna get into. I mean they are a dime a dozen here with 2JZ for like $2000 and $3000. I paid $2000 for this one, 1991 model with 48,000 miles for 2K..:eek2: I was shocked but thats the way Japan does it. I got lucky and found one with low miles and a great drive train. Its funny how fast you guys are going now...I rememebr when I left, the big thing was getting into the 10s...which I barely managed to do...now its 8s and 9s and even a 7 second pass...whew!!!! am I missing all the fun.....can't wait to get back but the money being here is just too damn good, tax breaks, and nothing to do makes for a good opportunity to save money like never before.......oh and congrats ZGAD on the 8s, plain awesome.

As a matter of fact the Japanese mechs at the Army Auto Hobby Shop asked me yesterday if I knew the guy on youtube with the yellowZ 2JZ named ZGAD!!! HaHA..what a small world. I got excited and said yes and gave him our website to look at. He wants to join. Looks like your famous here now!!! hehe. Well I guess I better go eat and start my day....what shall I do today????:D

  15. Yeah, I blacked out the Toyota on front. I wanted to put in the grill but cant locate an insert for the grill with the emblem. I may do the rear later...maybe not. This car is a GS300 in the states, hence the badge. I want to bring this engine and tranny back with me if I can with maybe the dash and steering rack etc for someone who wants to do a RHD conversion or something. The diff maybe a good thing too...dunno much about these cars.
