Guys, Did P90 heads come with steel/chromemoly valve seats from the factory? I was looking at rockauto and they have chrome moly seats listed, though out of stock. I thought ss or moly seats were an upgrade from stock brass. Thanks in advance!

240z LT1 T56 Comfortable Performance Build
scartail replied to Silver Mine Motors's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
gorgeous build... it a bummer about the corvette that you sacraficed for the engine. -
Hi, I orginally posted in another subforum, but did not get any response. Figure I was posted in the wrong subforum. There was a broken exhaust stud in the head. The break was recessed. I attempted to remove it with an extractor, and ended up breaking the extractor. I found website that described using a dremel and griding bit to grind through the extractor. I was able to do much of this. However, the reminisce of the stud/extractor still remains. To the best I could, I opened up the hole size for tapping M8. Still bits of steel remain. I used a magnet to detect the steel. Then I found a website that reference using battery acid to eat away the steel. I did this over several days. Still no, luck. As you can see, I only get rust. Any advice? I hope not to open up the hole further, then use an insert or helicoil. Someone out there must have a trick.

Thanks, I was hedged my bet with bspt; being Japanese and all. Unfortunately, mcmaster carr only carried the lower profile ones. I ended ordering some thru ebay. And for anyone else that runs into this trouble... I measured the plug to be 1/2" pipe thread (assumed BPST) and 20mm thick.
-
Thanks for the help guys. I'll browse mcmaster carr. I do think they are not straight threads, maybe pipe thread.

Thanks guys. I screwed up, and wasn't paying attention... I ended taking one out, thinking it was a head screw, and stripped the socket head during the process. zcardepot doesn't carry them. They look the run of the mill. Are there anything special with them? BSPT?
-
Thanks for responding. I stole this image of the zcardepot website. It's item 9 in the picture (not circled).

Can someone tell me the name/pn of the steel threaded plugs in the head? There are 4 of them, near the cam. Require a 10mms Allen to remove. Thanks.
-
thanks D9inger!!! that is one bueatiful engine.
-
He wrote the book, so I think most will defer to his interpretation. I'm curious to see the contouring and transition he has done/directed. Any pix will be nice.
-
hey d9inger, you have more pictures to share of the p&p? intake, exhaust? thanks.

nice build. very clean. did you do the head p&p yourself?

need help, and im not sure on the uniqueness of my dilemma, and im not sure of the proper category. i found a broken exhuast stud in my head (engine from the yard). in my absence of forethought, i drilled a hole and attempted to extract using an extractor. you know what, the extractor broke. so, i had a broken harden steel extractor in a broken steel stud in an aluminum head. i eventually grinded a hole with dremel. it's about a1/4" diameter hole. now im certained with retapping the hole. what are my options? grind (because some hardened steel might b left) the hole out to tap for helicoil? in retrospect, i should have welded something on and tried that. stupid of me. any advice? thanks.

success... i was fearful of causing damage, after removing timing chain. at first it was as hesitant, but because everything was off, i pu more force on it. it broke free. appreciate all the help and suggestions!!!

I don't know if this is a good thing or not. I filled the cylinders with ATF for 8 hrs and didn't get anywhere. Then i followed it by soaking it over night with ATF/acetone mix, that didn't. Thinking of Villeman's idea of getting oil to the crank, etc. I flipped the block upside down and filled it up with old oil. After about a day or I was to get a degree or two of rotation with some persuation with a hammer. So, I can rock back and forth, but doesn't seem to get any more movement. I then flipped it back upright, and soaked the cylinders with the ATF/aceton mix. After a day, the mxiture seeped through the rings. Unfortunately, i still get the same range of motion. No more. Now, I plan to do what Villeman suggested. I'm going to remove all the hadware except the crankshaft, pinston, etc. Unless there is something obvious I am missing?

thanks for all the good idea. I'll give them a try and get back to you.

Need some help/suggestions. I'm not looking to do a total rebuild, if I can prevent it. My goal is to have a fun weekend ride. Anyway, I pulled a L28ET out of a 81zxt several years ago. It spun freely when I pulled. Eventually, I left it under the tarp for a couple years in the back yard, when I had to relocate for work. When I got back, the engine was froze. I had stored it whole (head on block), with oil still in it. I've soaked the cylinders with diesel (for days) and liq pen (for hours) (seperate occasion), and still hasn't freed up. I've now pulled the head, and directly shot liq pen on pistons/rings, and the crank joints (gaps between the crank and rods); still nothing. It's stuck solid. When I load up on the crank, I can feel the bolt turn, but not the crank. At this point (my thinking), if i can free it up, I just need a head gasket (pistons and cyl walls look good), manifold gasket, etc.. as opposed new bearings and all the gaskets. Any advice? Am I beyond the point where it's easier to just tear everything apart? What am I missing? Here's what I'm looking at. Block sitting in a craddle.

Nice looking project. What are your power goals?

Sounds like they are out. I bought a pair from them in Feb. For the price, might be worth it to give them a call to see. I just checked ebay, they have the whole conversion listed. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-1970-78-Rear-Disc-Brake-Disk-Brakes-Conversion-Upgrade-133/322844482925?hash=item4b2b07dd6d:g:h5gAAOSwX~dWsSki&vxp=mtr

I think zcar depot has them for 70$ a pair?

youtube's got a few reviews. from what I understand, they're not bad (not great, either).

s130 l28et z31 engine harness and ecu swap
scartail replied to Rumrunner439's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
There is a write-up on using a z31 turbo ecu for the l28et (that's with a s130 turbo harness). The harness needs to be repined.
