  1. I mean the 83 turbo wiring harness. My friend had one in it and it was incomplete so he swapped back the 77 harness which doesnt incorporate some things such as the cold start valve. Also it is every plug so i dont think it would be all the injectors fouling out. I think it is between the afm (which i cleaned before i had this problem) and the timing. I will find out tonite though.
  2. Alright a coulpe more hours have work i have come up with it stalling if you bring it over 1k to 1500. The plugs seem to just instantly carbon up. I could take them up and spray them with brake cleaner and it all comes off. Now lets say all the cranking had flooded the engine and would that mix with oil and cause this. It didnt smoke really before this and now it heavily smoking a very dark color. I am stumped right now. Edit: It just hit me that the guy i got the car from said that the timing was very much retarded ( ). I am used to working on 4 cyl. NIissans. Is advanceing the timing turning it towards the firewall on the Z's (it is still using the 77 distributor).
  3. Last week the car ran really good. I know it is running really rich though. The other day the starter wouldnt turn fast enough so i replaced it and now it turns awsome. But.... as soon as i put in plugs and start her up se is wobbling and spitting. 10 mins later i fould all the plugs and she stalls! I pull them out and they are like all carboned up and smelling of fuel. It hasnt done this before. It it because i am not running the cold start valve on the 83 turbo motor? It didnt have problems before this. I just wanna get the car home so i can put on my new wiring harness. Thanks. Ryan 77 with an 83 turbo.
  4. Alright i have a 83 turbo motor in my 77 with the 77 tranny. The starter in there is a 77. Should it be an 83? The 77 is cranks so slow it wont even start. I just replaced the battery and is are going to do the cables now. Should i still use the 77 when i get a new one?
  5. Anyone running smoothline's hood. It is only $250 plus shipping. I have heard about the good quality of thier fenders but havent heard of their hood.
  6. Odd you should mention that because i haven't started it yet since i have plugged them up cbut it has been too cold to start it right now (below 0) withought a cold start valve hooked up. tHIS IS A SUMMER car so it isnt driven now anyways.
  7. OK, check it out, since then he switched back to a 77 distributer, 77 wiring harness, and 77 ecu. Now the car runs up to redline. Problem is now no cold start valve because there is was no provsions on the 77 wiring harness. This thing isnt relly being driven though and mostly just being started. Hates being started now in the cold. It really is rich at idle but leaner up top. He gave the car to me so now i am gonna try and get an uncut harness and wire it up correctly. Now as far as vacum lines I will go out when it gets warmer (-10 now). I will have to make a custom intake piping for the vacum lines to plug into.
  8. Has anyone thought about greddy e-manage? I know people running these on their turbo se-r's and 300zx's, but haven't heard of anyne with an older Z using them. They are basically just a fuel controlller and allow you to usr your stock ecu to control the other things such as ignition. They are also not that bad if you can find one second hand with the software. I have seen them for around $300 and below.
  9. The car has many open vacumm lines that i can see, mostly things like the egr are blocked off. This isn't my car but i am helping them. It idles at like 1100 or just a little below. I think the timing may be off because of this. We tryed to advance the timing, but when we would turn the distributor the car would start to to die. Turning the distributor towards the clockwise is advanced, correct? Thanks for the help. Ryan
  10. This is about a 83 turbo motor swapped into a 280Z. Firts off the thing is fouling out plugs. It seems to be running rich but once you floor it at high RPM's it wants to stall. I was going to check the TPS and i noticed the connecter that plugs into the TPS only plugs in to the middle and top one. The top one is for idleing and the bottom one is for WOT, right? Is this why it stumbles and almost stalls at WOT? Was there ever a connecter that connected to the bottom one in that plug? If i am confusing anyonelet me know. Thanks in advanced. Ryan
  11. I was just wondering how much backspacing was too much or too little. The rim i was looking at 5.35". Is that too far? Also will a +38mm offset be too much? Will wheel spacers be needed? I know i will hear "search" and i did a quick one that turned up to answer a couple of my other questions. This is for a stock suspensioned '77 280z.
  12. Actually they were Cragar's (misspelled). Maybe i will see if they have them in that style with a different backspacing. Hmmm, i will see what i can find with a 4.4" bs.
  13. Get a manifold from a CRX HF, get a turbo flange welded to it. Get a junkyard turbo. Get some exhaust piping from a parts store. Get some silicone hoses from a truck store. Get BOV from eclipse/talon/laser. Only thing you have to do is get more fuel to it and manage the air/fuel ratio.
  14. The guy has like the haynes manual, but he can't figure out the wiring without the pigtails. I haven't had a chance to help him yet cuz i have been working on a water pump on my car. Too bad i can't get the car off him. I would just get another harness. I got some infor on wiring up the injectors without the pigtails from a long search.
  15. Well he got the engine harness and ecm from someone. The problem is it was missing a couple of pigtails and relays. We got the relays. Is there anywhere to get the pigtails we need. That is why the fuel injectors were hooked up to the battery. I have been trying to trade him for the car from him so i can fix it, but he wants to get it running right first. I don't wat him to blow it up, that is why i am trying to fix it. I have worked on many fuel injected turbo cars, but never had to do any harness wiring up, so some of this is new to me. His friend whom wired it up to the battery hasa 240 with an 82 turbo motor in it, so the guy figured he knew what he was doing. I guess not.
  16. Actually he is using the harness from that motor and the ecu. The only thing is he is missing some of the wiring for some relays. He has the relays. He hasn't driven the car for more than 5-7 miles. Just to go get exhaust. I think because the injectors are at wide open all the the time so it is just dumping in fuel. And yes he has to turn the pump on with a switch. I am trying to fix the car for him before he blows it up. The motor has no miles on it almost. Is most of the wiring harness the same between the 77 and 83?
  17. Alright, i am helping a friend out with his 77Z with a 83 turbo swap. the 83 wiring harness is a real mess. His friend hooked up the injectors right to the battery and the fuel pump to a switch. Now i am gonna take a shot at fixing it. He seems to be missing the pigtails to the relays. Does the 83 use the same pigtails as the 77? I am just going to start off with that. I am going to check the fuel pressure and check his temperature sender bcuz the car wont warm up past 1/4 of the way.
