Bob Walters over at the classic z list has an original turbo scarab. http://www.classiczcars.com/ drop by there and check out his gallery. i think he also posts here from time to time. real nice guy, we've been corresponding off and on for a few years. as i say, mine is a kit , as such, it was put together as the end builder decided to do it. i would believe that all the kit cars are going to be different. i would think that 95% of the factory built scarab cars will be close to the same. the differences being personal touches the customer wanted, wheels, sunroof, interiors, mirrors, steering wheel, seats, stuff like that. but the basic car should be the same for all of em. anyway, Bob's car is a real nice representative of the scarab. wish mine was half as nice .

Tim, i agree, battery is moving to the rear, i think i lose another 45 pounds by getting rid of the four core and adding the JTR radiator. that'd make almost 80 to 100 pounds off the front. hmmm seems the group here is talking upgrading the alternator. i wonder what the stock 72 chevy alternator produces in amps ... i am thinking 65 amps. the ford guys say no worries, but thoughts here seem to suggest, i will want to upgrade to the 100 amp alt. thoughts ??? oh, you picked up the opel GT ... i just bought an 88 fiero GT. 108k, 5 speed, full load, burgundy, on scale 1 to 10 ... it's an easy 7 to 8. $2300. one on e bay with a 400 hp small block chevy in it ... i was drooling, but no $$$.

you could purchase the do it at home kit, or pay the scarab shop to build it for you. depending on your pocket book, you could get a basic engine swap, or get a full blown engine swap and a body kit. the most common kit is called the california. the kit is available from a shop in aussieland. http://www.sickdivision.com/pages.asp?group_id=18 i had two friends that worked for scarab, when the shop was in campbell ca. and later in san jose. Jonathon Sievert, my buddy's younger brother worked there, i think in 75, 76. another friend named Pat, worked there i think, from around 76 until they closed the doors. i can't think of Pat's last name. Pat bought himself a brand new 280z and filled it with a big block and a turbo 400. widened the stock wheels, ran stock hubcaps. looked like any other stock 280z. had super quiet exhaust on it. around 9 pm, on the weekend, he'd come into the mobile station where, at the time, i was pumping gas and wrenching. he'd tank up and tell me he was going hunting for camaros, road runners and mustangs, with an occasional trans am for a quick snack. about 45 minutes later, he'd be back, maybe 3 or 4 late 60's early 70's muscle cars, following him onto the lot. all of em trying to figure out how they just got their clocks cleaned by a 280z. he'd gas up, never pull the hood, chat a bit with the muscle car owners, leading them to believe it was the new fuel injected 2800 cc engine, in the 280z, that made all the difference. i was 21 and i think Pat was 20. i was attempting to build a mid engine V8 corvair corsa (sent for info on the crown kit, bought a 66 140 hp corsa, a friend cherried the body and painted it. i paid a shop for new pistons, barrels and valve job ... ran so damn good i never did the swap ... sold it for dimes on the dollar, to join other money for a down payment on a house ). Pat was constantly talking with me about buying a 240z scarab. at the time i had a 57 nomad, 58 vette, 65 GTO, and the Corvair ( the vette being the only project car ). anyway .. you could get a scarab to go ( which is what my current 72 z is ) or get it to eat there. my friend Pat told me, back then, they sold more kits than complete cars, though he thought most kits were never used or the swap was never completed, as most of the buyers were true dreamers or they were starting with a wrecked z. you have to remember, 1977 is only 5 years away from 1972, and a 5 year old car was just as relatively expensive as a 5 year old car is now. so, to go cutting on it and swapping engines was a big expensive deal. most people would buy the kit, and decide not to do it . wayne

greetings, i haven't gotten the fan installed yet. other projects have taken on a life of their own and the z is sitting ( again ). with the scarab engine mounts the 2 speed taurus fan will not clear the water pump pulley. i am running a 4 core, brass, stuart radiator. Mike at JTR suggests i sell that radiator and pick up one of the radiators that they sell or use a camaro style radiator. the one inch tubes, i think he said to go with the 2 core, one inch tubes. that will put more room between the pump and the radiator allowing me to use the taurus fan. though zirgo, claims that the fan i bought ... 2850 cfm, will cool the 350 in my z, it has been suggested that it is a low amperage fan, not much horsepower and may not do the job with the 4 core i have now. a friend suggested, using the zirgo as a puller and adding two pushers in front of the radiator. i saw this at the black hawk meet in california a couple months back. wasn't able to speak with the car's owner. i think, before i went to that expense, i would take Mike's advise ... buy the JTR radiator and use the taurus fan. the taurus fan has the built in shroud, that forces the air to go though most of the radiator. this is the big secret behind its success. most of the people that i have spoken to ( mustang 5.0 people ), tell me to run the two speed fan, but ... that most of them have never had to use the 2nd speed, even at 95 degrees and the air on. most suggested, use the taurus fan, try it without connecting the switch for the second speed, if issues, then connect the second speed. i asked about the amperage on the second speed, again ... most suggested that it would come on so seldom, that the reserve in the battery would easily handle it, no reason to run a 100 amp alternator, unless i was running a home stereo set up in the car. so ... sorry no answer for you. yes, i am going to try the zirgo before i give up on it. i might get lucky LOL but, i truly believe, that Mike from JTR is correct, the way to go is with a thinner, 1 inch tube radiator and the taurus 2 speed fan. wayne

78 280z door glass a direct replacement for '72 240z ???
waynekarnes replied to waynekarnes's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Everyone, thanks for the advice and offer of door glass. found a real nice 71 at the wreckers today ( left front damaged ), other than the wire wheels, is all stock, appeared to have 91k on it. other crows had gotten there before me,already stripped a bunch off of it. came in yesterday. 30 bucks later i had the glass in the back of my 86 nissan pl 720. is there an easier way to get that glass out than taking the whole door apart ? i pulled the chrome that goes over the top of the glass, the regulator and everything else that was related. the bolts on the bottom of the glass, holding it to the lower frame, seem to be permanently in place. looked like the bolts were peened, so the nuts would not back off. gave up on that idea, and took the whole door apart. thanks again, great group of people here !!! -

search isn't helping me at all ... 72 240z, driver's door glass got damaged. i know that the doors are not interchangeable between the 280 and the 240. there is a 78 280 at the wreckers. will the door glass interchange ? is it a direct replacement or are the bolts, screws, track guides, brackets, ect. in different locations. bought one off a guy parting a 240 on ebay, paid with paypal 2 weeks ago, says he shipped it two days later. not here yet, i think i may have gotten ripped off, just like when i paid steve s,unfortunately a former hybrid member, for the msa aero Ii body kit ... that cost me 400 bucks. anyway ... any one know ... will the driver's door glass from a 78 280z be a direct replacement, no mods, remove and bolt in, for the 72 240z door glass ? thanks! wayne

ACT NOW TO STOP THE CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS EXEMPTION REPEAL BILL! On Friday, August 27, the California Legislature approved a bill known as A.B. 2683. This bill would repeal the state`s current pro-hobbyist emissions-test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and older. It includes amendments that do not protect car collectors and is being opposed by SEMA and the major car organizations in California. This bill would require: * All vehicles with post-1975 model year insured as collector cars (driven only to parades and exhibitions), and at least 35-years old to continue in the Smog Check program for the life of the vehicle. * Revisions to the Smog Check testing regimen for these qualifying vehicles, including a tailpipe test, functional inspection of the fuel cap, and a visual inspection for fuel leaks. The vehicle would also be forced to comply with the exhaust emissions standards for the vehicle`s class and model year as prescribed by California regulators. CONTACT YOUR GOVERNOR TODAY! The bill is now in the hands of the Governor who can choose to veto it or sign it into law. We urge you to contact the Governor immediately to request his veto of A.B. 2683! He can be reached at: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger State Capitol Building Sacramento, CA 95814 FAX: 916-445-4633 E-mail: http://www.govmail.ca.gov

if it gets done, will post pix ... i'm counting on the skills and generosity of my friend at work ( phone company ... climbing poles, hanging lines, crawling under houses ). my buddy is not sure he wants to tackle this ... he has taken on another project and his wife is a bit peeved ... he's been out 3 nights a week, until 2 in the morning working at his friend's body shop, customizing a tractor for a wealthy farmer. drives 40 miles each way. gets home around 3. gets up at 6 to be at work with me around 7 am. ahhh, to have that energy ... to be 35 again !!!

bought a mrs bitchi gas door, a plastic one and the aluminum. 40 for the plastic and 110 for the aluminum. both come with the well, the part under the door that goes around the neck of the filler hose. the plastic one appears to be held in place by the filler hose and maybe a bracket of some sort. the aluminum lid, appears to be held the same way, as well as bolts through the body on the ring. will see if i can eventually make this a reality, if not, the counterman at mrs. bitchi says i can bring em back.

LOL ... i don't think it'll do you any good ... may make matters worse ... i suggest a night of laying low at the shop, flowers and some sort of jewlery strategically placed for the following morning ... and of course ... one of your old baby pictures, one where you're doing something cute or something really stupid ... wayne

Mr. John C. is much too modest ... he is an artist ... our physical and spiritual adviser ... and when he has the time .. he wrenches on z cars ... he offers up sound and well thought out advise and opinions, which the rest of us are welcome to heed or ignore. sometimes when we choose to ignore this advise, we return hat in hand, head hung low, asking for help. no high horse for John, no " i told you so ". instead, calm reassurance that it can be fixed and this is how to do it ... i have a few off line e messages from John, that basically say ... yeah, wayne, that would be trick, but a better and less costly way to do that would be to .... John ... thanks again for the all past help, and for the help i'm gonna ask for in the future, for having the opinion, that there is no such thing as a dumb question, also for answering the same questions over and over until i understand the answer. javascript:emoticon('') wayne

think i'm gonna post a new message under body and paint ... i feel bad about hi jacking this thread ... even if it is about painting ... a dual action sander ... yeah .. you need to scuff the chrome, but you can do that with a 3m scouring pad. meet me at the new thread
-
A.H. 3000 YES !!! okay, let's hi jack this thread ... as long as the rattle can is out ... the proper way to paint the chrome around the glass, the chrome door/window trim. how do we get em to be blacked out ??? i especially don't want to remove the door/window frame ... fresh info from those with an opinion and those who have done it !!! thanks !!!

z tard, thanks for the inside pix ... where'd you pick up the inside piece, i take it, it's a match to the sparco lid ? or is there an actual gas cap under the lid ? obviously, still in planning stages for a filler neck and tube to the tank. are you going to use a fuel cell ? killer klown, thanks ! looks nice ! any problems with the body contours any pix of the inside, the filler neck to the tank ... are you running a fuel cell or stock tank ? from what is see, looks like stock tank and replaced the door ? in that case, i'm guessing, the stock datsun set up is behind the flip door ? i had looked at that lid on ebay, you satisfied with the quality ? years back, for my meyers manx dune buggy, i bought a flat, screw shut, like one would use on a boat, used it above the gas tank. now i'm regretting that decision. it's warpping and plastic is loosing oil and drying out. cheap enough to replace, but still ... so, i want to do this right, do it once, especially since my friend with the welder is actually going to be doing it, i have very limited skills in that department. let's see, relocate the battery to the cargo area, how much trouble could that be ???? hmmm , a new fuel cap door, a fuel cell, and new exhaust system .... but that means relocating a brake line ... well, rear disc brake kit is already waiting in the garage ... i don't think that i am ever gonna get to do more than drive it around the block, testing the latest improvement. MORE PIX !!! I WANT MORE !!! thank you very much ...
-
thanks. NICE ! saw 2 of those earlier. went to ebay and found one of those caps, much better price than the mrs bitsi lid . does that open to expose the gas cap underneath, or is it the real cap ? any pix of the inside ? i want to leave the vents working on mine, thought your cap looks like the factory put it there. wonder if there is enough air through one vent that it's okay to cover one ? again, any inside shots ? how are you getting fuel to the tank ? thanks again, wayne

real nice ! i was debating, if i ever get mine painted ... color match to the car or keep it contrasting grey or black ... i like the contrast ! looks excellent !!!
