  2. little over 2 years ago ... my ex got $113k in divorce settlement ... 14 months of partying ... she got evicted for not paying her rent ... she didn't buy a vette, no jewlery, she did, however buy a sears lawn mower ... my son asked me stop by her old house ( he's 15, i've had custody since he was 6 ... long drawn out divorce ), he wanted the lawn mower, make a little money mowing the neighbor's lawns ... she and her boyfriend are homeless and living in her car ... have been for about a year ... when ever i see homeless people, i wonder what got em there ... as i say, ex doesn't have anything to show for $113,000 ... well, except for what my son and i refer to as the 100,000 dollar loan mower funny how when you get dragged into a mess ... even after the nasty divorce and how she blew through the money .. i still helped her out, food, money, car parts ... she's my son's mother ... the way i treat her, reflects on the way he meets life ... yet, she makes little or no efforts to change her lifestyle ... apparently she can find a way to party, but can't find her way to get a job ... when ever i am accosted by a homeless person begging for money ... i have to wonder ... by choice or by circumstances ???
  3. there is ton of room in there ... most everything is easily accessable ... much more so than any modern late model car ... you'd think, by looking at the L28 in there, how things hang off of it, that there isn't much room ... the V8 fits in there, like the factory had originally intended it to be in there ... if you haven't already been there ... visit this site ... they will bend over backwards to help you .. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Datsun_Z_V-8.html normally, you would of had a ton of replies here, the holidays ... people out of town ... post here again ... lots of good people here ... know a whole lot more than i do ...
  4. 3 pm yesterday, on the phone to JTR, spoke with Greg, heard Mike in the background ... broke out my battered and bruised credit card, oughta just tape it to the back of the z, let vendors and ebay auctioneers, swing by and swipe it through their machines ... after a little crying on Greg's shoulder, ordered the stealth radiator, mounting kit and electric fan brackets ... today at 3pm, box of goodies was on my porch ... Greg was nice enough to toss in a brand new JTR book as a party gift ... what a guy !!! i have the older book, man lots of new info ... well worth a read ... gonna make me re-think some of the scarab engineer, and some of the stuff the previous owner did ... radiator is SO pretty ... i opened the box, and stood there admiring it ... still in the box ... a work of art, afraid to disturb it ... man that's gonna look good under the hood ( wait ... look at my av ... i have no hood ... supposedly still at the ex-body shop owner's house ... ), never mind that ... after all my whining and pondering ... i will be able to see if that taurus fan is gonna fit ... might tear into it tonight ... supposed to be in the low 40's upper 30's ... on the driveway ... maybe drain the old 4 core, get it out ... it's cherry too , copper and brass ... the original scarab spec radiator, supposedly came with the kit. fingers crossed, i'm this close to getting the taurus fan to fit. i also bought a stewart hi-flow short water pump, if i get lucky, i won't have to use it ...swapping it in place of the long pump, means making or finding new brackets to remount all the belt driven accessories ... and new pulleys ... the short pump will add an inch more clearance ...
  5. glad to hear you have 'er running ... always a thrill ... when the car was backed in, a bit of dirt may have gotten in a jet, plugged an orifice, has since worked out ... pumping the blank out of the carb, should have shot enough fuel in there to get it started, even without a choke, feathering ( lightly running the gas pedal up and down ) the gas should of kept it running. but, you are correct ... no choke, runs lean, misfires ... pops out the carb ... so you have the manifold heated thermostat or electric ??? manifold heated, would have two tubes circulating heat from the intake manifold ( conductive heat from the exhaust of the engine ). the electric has a metallic tab sticking out from the side of the carb, for 12 volts to attach to ... both sort of work the same way ... coil of wire ( like spring in a watch ), heats, and causes the choke to open. as long as all is fine ( i've seen where a fool, knowing little enough about carbs, has removed or broken the spring or retaining tab, that holds the spring ), anyway ... on the side of the carb ... grab your book ... on the side of the carb, you will see a black disc, has incremental lines drawn on it ... with a line up the middle ... one side says rich, one says lean ... you can loosen the 3 screws around the outside of the disc ( engine warm), and adjust the position of the choke, so that the quadrajet is actually one of the best carbs ever made and one of the worst ever understood. i surely don't claim to be an expert ... i own books ... i read, i ask those who have been there before. the quad works off of the amount of air the engine needs, unless it's jetted wrong, it's hard to over or under carb with the quadrajet ... my understanding is, it is a close to fuel injection as one can get with a carb. check out this web site ... you may find it useful ... http://vetteworks.tripod.com/Qjet.htm this site is much more involved, but if you have a q jet, you'll benefit from reading the info there ... http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofcrb.htm#Carbs you may want to bookmark these sites ... GM had been using the Q jet for years, before replacing em with F.I. they don't spend money year after year, if it's gonna cost them money fixing em .. holleys, carters, are all good carbs, most edlebrock's are reworked rochester carbs, the big spreadbores are reworked q-jets ... i'm running a edlebrock performer 795 cfm on my 350 chevy. it's a reworked q-jet. Q-jets are more complicated for the back yard mechanic to figure out. holleys are fairly simple, and now that they have better throttle body valves ( don't shrivel and die after a backfire and flood your engine, as easily as they used to ), they are a good choice for the novice. but it's hard to beat a good running q-jet for overall performance and gas mileage. grab the HP q-jet book, and with a little experimentation ( changing metering rods, ect ), you can have a kick ass carb set up. good luck with it ... glad
  6. you should be able to contact the foster home or the county dept that handles such things .. a note from your doctor should give them reason to release any medical records they have. my neighbors ( long since moved ), were kind enough to raise foster children. old friend of mine also took in 4 ( has since moved out of state ), he adopted two of the related children. the 2 other children were lucky enough to be adopted by their biological grandparents. anyway, the county agencies gave them all the medical info they needed to deal with most issues the children may of had. good luck with your quest !!!
  7. that shouldn't be out until easter ! must be the results of that cadbury bunny finally catching the chicken ...
  8. way to go, especially the engine repair test .. must know your stuff ! imagine if you'd read LOL ... continued good fortune, and happy holidays
  9. Steve Sampson came through !!!!! Thank YOU Steve ! a while back one of the members put a slightly used msa aero II kit up for sale here ... i missed out on it ... money is always tight ... can't afford a new one. Steve bought it. a bit of bad luck ... his z broke ... had to sell the kit ... original seller put me in contact with Steve. Steve's in arizona, i'm in ca. $360 and shipping, as i remember ... more bad luck for Steve, lost his job, his place to live, rotten luck followed him. no money to ship the stuff ... promised he wouldn't forget me, he'd get em to me when he could ... i made mention, here in the body section, a month or so ago, as no response to messages on his Lady's machine or email ... that he didn't rip me off, i understand hard times. if any one saw him, please ask him to contact me ... no hard feelings ... if you still have the parts, let's work something out ... i refuse to kick an honest man when he's down, especially when he's trying hard to get back up. it's going on two years ... last time i heard from him was 8 mo. ago ( email from his Lady ). no contact since then. i had written it off and hoped that life was treating him better. UPS dropped the kit off today !!!! Steve Sampson and his Lady are people of honor and i want every one on this list to know it !!! Thanks, Steve !!!! and thank your Lady ! wayne
  10. opps ... i was distracted and didn't read the whole question ... no one is commercially making a kit that will allow one to explode a stock 280zx by hooking a V8 to it ... thought wanted a kit to install a V8 in a zx with an automatic, not use the zx automatic with the V8. the little 264 V8 or what ever it was, chevy made during the early 80's, making i think 110 hp, now that might not break a zx automatic. but, it would hardly be worth the effort to do that, when for sure, a 350 cube V8 will shred it for you. sorry if i mislead anyone ...
  11. JTR is working on a kit for the zx. i think that msa has a kit for the zx. check with Greg and Mike at Jags that run. Mike recently posted regarding this kit. check out Dave's zx V8 http://home.earthlink.net/~dvgreimann/index.html
  12. is that on all the family xmas cards ??? LOL ...
  13. yeah, get all those liberals out of the country. eliminate social security, public parks, minimum wages, overtime, unions, vacation pay, eight hour days, health care, public schools, the p.u.c., tracking of poisons, cleaning up the waters, lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans, cutting down on air pollution, fair and free speech, freedom to practice the religion or not practice the religion of your choice, fair search and seizure, the right to a speedy trial and to confront your accusers, the right to privacy, the tort system and more ... who was/is it protesting/fighting to get all of us these choices/privileges/rights ??? you think that the aclu isn't stopping some power crazy cop from ripping your z apart, when he pulls you over for driving while in his town, music a little too loud, pipes a little too loud, you looking like you are out of place ??? think again ... someone has to stand up for the constitution ... other than wanting the rights to arm bears .. too damn few people stand up for it. too many are willing to give up those rights to appease those in charge, that are supposed to uphold it, not twisting it to meet their personal agenda. i don't agree with everyone's personal choices and certainly don't want my child subjected to those i find objectional ... but ... this is our america and, our constitution was put in place to allow all of us to make those choices unemcumbered by those that disagree. still Gabe, that post was damn funny ... i can see em in the desert asking for water and passing it up, because it wasn't sparkling with a twist ... LOL
  14. Mike told Greg that i called ... Greg called me back, offered some advise for my z with 350 v8. spent about 15 minutes with me, no rush to get me off the phone. guess as soon as i can scrape 250 bucks together ... 140 for radiator, 60 for the brackets, hoses and shipping ... the high volume water pump is on the way ... now just to figure out the brackets and pulleys ... i hate this engineering on the fly B.S. ... this is why i have so much money in a car that isn't street worthy .... yeah, i coulda borrowed money and bought me a nice looking V8 z. but, it wouldn't be mine ... i'da paid for it ... but i wouldn't know it ... gotta turn the wrench for it to be mine ...
  15. OPPPPPSS !!! not the 21 grand mark .... geeezzz should say 2 grand mark ... your basic bare bones V8 z car ...
  16. the honest truth is ... the z will a challenge ... the 57 post is straight up almost bolt in ... they make mounts now, you can get rid of that funky front mount and tranny hanger ... side mount the small block in there. if it was a 6 banger, the radiator is on the grille side of the core support as opposed to the engine side. if so, you need a larger V8 radiator. if using a 4 speed, you'll need to get a bell crank bracket on the frame ( it's usually there, but may be in the wrong place for your current engine set up ). it will be easier and cheaper to get the 57 streetable ( provided it's at least 90 % there now ), than it will be to get the z going. figure on spending around 1300 to get the bare bones V8 z going ... that's if you fabricate and do most of the work with friends. the only z cars that bring the big bucks are the ones that have fancy paint, interiors ect. you need to check and recheck the frame rails for rust ... the z is basically an egg ... very strong as long as none of it is cracked .. RUST is the death kneel to the z car ... you may end up spending most of your budget repairing the rust, have 2k to 3k into the car and have it still looking like a beater. but ... i have to tell you ... ( i have owned 2 1957 nomads, 2 1955 two door hard top bel airs ), if you can let the 57 sit, and you never want to sell it ... let it sit ... gather up a few friends, about 2 grand the JTR book, their kit and build the V8 z car ... the rear end won't take a whole lot of abuse from the manual, an automatic will allow it to live long for you to have some fun and still be able to sell the car when you're tired of it ... if you leave the interior as is, don't go making it like your fancy truck, and the z has very little rust, you could probably build a real decent z for the 21 grand mark. no show winner, but something that'll chase down a camaro and mustang or two. mine is a scarab. built by my friend's cousin back in 77. 350 V8, prev owner claims 350 horse ( i think less ), vette 4 speed, 200R ( 280z-stronger ) 3rd member, 280 z half shafts ( stronger ). still has stock suspension, was supposedly rebuilt less than 5k miles ago, springs, stuts, ect, still have nissan parts number tags on em ... much too mushy for me !!! enough of that ... again, the z is a toy, the 57 a true investment .. you can turn the 57, hold onto it and it's money in the bank. the z, you'll have to sit on for a while, it won't be as easy to sell as the 57, nor have quite the following. as far as seat of the pants fun, a properly set up V8 z is hard to beat. easier to drive than the 57, you can beat it and not feel bad ( well too bad ), as it's not the classic the 57 is. cost you more to do the 57, as you'll want to do it correct the 1st time and only do it once. with the z, you can experiment .. be fewer people hounding you about ... why did you do that, telling you that you screwed that up, suggesting and messing with you, as they will if you start on the 57. advantage z car ... if you start and don't finish, think you're in over your head,or run out of money ... you can salvage the V8 and drop it in the 57, and off the z car ... recover some of your money. man i am rambling ... simple .... if you have the ability ... if the z is sturdy, little structual rust ... if there is no panic to do anything with the 57 ... if you can scrape together about 1300 bucks ... if you can scrounge up parts ... build the z car. if you are going to have to farm labor out ... if you may have to sell a car to finance this venture ... economically ... keep the 57 ... keep the z stock and enjoy it as is ... did that help to confuse you ??? wayne
  17. when hunting down mad dogs, you put em down like mad dogs ...
  18. LOL !!!! i voted Kerry ... and i found that post to be damn funny nice touches, with the free range chicken. blaring rush ... funny stuff ... you write that ? very creative ;-0
  19. you can also use rust bullet and fiberglass mat. basically get rid of most of the rust ( wire wheel ). paint the rust bullet around the rust, while it's tacky, lay the mat in place, slop some more rust bullet on top. gently dabb it with paint brush, work the rust bullet into the matt. paint some more rust bullet on top, to smooth the mat ( or use a roller ). cost you about 20 bucks. or, use a piece of scrap sheet metal, that covers the hole, and about an inch around the hole. place the sheet metal over the hole, using a light weight hammer, hammer it to shape in the trunk. wire wheel around the hole, squirt some automotive body glue around the hole, set the sheet metal on the hole. put something heavy on it, make sure the heavy something doesn't get on the glue, let it set for a couple hours. you should be able to get the glue at any automotive paint supply house. if none in your area ... eastwood.com should have it. if you want, you can also spray some undercoating from a rattle can from underneath. years back, saw a guy, cut a pepsi can, hammered it to shape, sprayed the undercoating all around the hole ( didn't clean squat ), sheet metal screwed the can to the trunk, covered it with more under coating. then crawled underneath and more undercoating. total cost ... 4 bucks for spray can of undercoating, free pepsi can, 20 cents worth of screws. have fun, be safe
  20. Mike, thanks for the info. will need to wait on a profit sharing check, and if it's large enough ( bills to be paid ), i'll be driving up to livermore to pick up the kit. website says $250 ... is that for the 6 kit or the V8 kit ? i'm guessing the V8 doesn't need the hoses and bushing hose adapters ?? wayne
  21. if it's a 400 small block, on the outside, everything that fits a 350 of the same year will bolt on. be adviced that the 400 is externally balanced. if i remember correctly, you need to retain the original flywheel or flex plate, as well as the harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft. the cylinders are siamesed, meaning there is no water jackets between the cylinders, be carefull as to the head gaskets you use, again from memory, the 400 has steam holes in the block, that match to the heads, and the gasket must have those holes. also ( though for 99% of engines on the road, 4 bolt mains are not needed ), i believe that all the 400's are 2 bolt mains, though you can machine em for 4 bolts. the 400 tended to run a bit hotter than the 350. i don't remember if they were prone to head gasket failures or not. i do remember that the 400 was shunned by the hot rodders, though hot rod magazine did a write up and a monster 400 small block engine project, i want to say around 1976. but, your original question, will 99% of the engine accessories from a 350 bolt to the 400 ??? 99% of em will bolt right on. good luck, wayne
  22. Dale, as you may have read in my post about taurus and scarab ... i'm trying to figure out how if replacing the 4 core in my scarab 240z, with the JTR radiator is going to give me the clearance to fit the taurus fan between the water pump and the radiator. how are you mounting the radiator ? how thick is the radiator ? any pix of the radiator mounted ? if so, please email em to me. maybe from the pix i can figure out what to do. with the 4 core rad. the long water pump, there is no room for the fan. looks like i need another inch or so. trying to figure out, if the jtr radiator will give me the room i need. thanks, wayne thanks, wayne
  23. ahhh i've done that before ... put the belt on the pulley and then bolt the pulley on. slowly rotating the pulley towards the bolt holes until all of em are in place, and the belt tightens ... did that years back on my 55 chevy ... spent hours trying to find the correct belts. thanks
  24. i checked both of the fans i have, one from a sable, one from a taurus, both have the same 8146 number ... i was thinking about running two bars, both horizontally, one across the top and one the bottom. mount the taurus fan to those bars. how have others been mounting the fan ?? i have sent several e mails to jtr, no replies regarding their radiator ... left a message on their voicemail this morning .. wayne
  25. how does one adjust a dedicated pump belt ? you know, i've been checking all this out ... gonna cost me more for a water pump, belts, brackets, and pulleys than i paid for the scarab ... LOL
