  1. that style of paint was very popular in the late 70's early 80's. i have some mattel hot wheel cars from that period with that style paint. it was a psychedelic paint job, often called panelling. it was not uncommon to find that done on brand new 76 to 78 280z's sold at the datsun dealerships here in california. another california sold vehicle that comes to mind was when the toyota 4x4 trucks 1st hit the market, toyota dealerships sold a truck called the LOBO. strobed strip down the side and that panel paint style on top the fenders and hood. other than the hood, the rest of the paint may well be as it was sold off the dealer's lot. as far as the air horns on the carbs, not my cup of tea, but to each his own. i'm sure in Kuwait any sort of z car is far and few between. one would really have to love the z to put up with the lack of parts and the expense of the up keep. this owner has every right to be proud of that z and show it off ! welcome to the group, glad to have you with us ! the body kit is called the california z. it was a popular styling kit for the z, especially the scarab. though if i recall correctly, most of those kits were on the 280 and very few were on the 240. the ISMA ( ?? ) look was the rage then. plenty of chevy monzas running around with the big shoulder look. if you look at the rear fenders the tops are flat, the look of the popular race cars of the era. the california z kit was a softer less exagerated version of the race car body look. out of canada, there is a company http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/240z.html that reproduces the california z kit. though many here have strongly suggested that unless you can walk into his factory and pick up your parts, not to deal with him. the other place was SICK performance in Australia. though last time i checked, the website was gone. prices were great, but shipping to california ( size does matter ) was gonna cost me 1300 american bucks, the entire kit was 1200. made from the original molds not a mold taken from another car. check out this car it is the complete kit, down to the funky square head lamps. http://www.zcar.com/month/2004/11/ another with shot of Jim Cook's catalog http://zhome.com/Oct2000/CalZ.htm back in april of 2004, some one here at hybrid was selling a whole kit. may still have it or the person that bought it may have it stashed away in the garage. good luck with your hunt ! with the exception of those funky front fenders ( was gonna use Mr. Washington's front fenders, as are on Dan's blue z ) back when i used to have a little extra pocket change, the california z kit was what i wanted as well. wayne
  2. 1st off, what's this gonna cost me ? i mean in the long run. what affect is it gonna have on crap under the car getting caught in air turbulances. a reo dy na mics ? will those louvers have any affect and if so, what is the effect ? if this is gonna be something i am gonna have to live with, i need to know this stuff. as far as looks go ( if i could have spelled the word aesthetically, i would have used it here. doesn't spell like it sounds, does it ), i like the very last one. not as busy as the others. though i am not too sure i like the direction you are going here, but is most certainly a good sign. to me any way ! means that you, Pete, are getting bored with the z. and per our earlier agreement, my dream is getting closer to coming true. now, i can sweeten the deal, if it's sheer boredom and you aspire ( how's that for a word ??? ) to start something, my original cash offer stands and i will toss in my slightly customized v8 240z. it's still in design phase, you could punch holes, flare this, lift that, lower a bit over here. maybe channel the body over some custom rails, you know maintain the stock suspension travel, but give the appearance of being a couple inches off the ground. absolutely no one would accuse you of messing with perfection, i can guarantee that ! come on now, my bored friend, surely sounds interesting to the tinkerer in you. we know it does. for as long as i have been poking sticks at my z, reengineering on the fly, i am sure you've thought, you know if it were me, this is what i'd do. i'll even toss in the 2 brand new nissan fenders, both of the msa aero 2 body kits, msa mirror kit, fiberglass cowl induction hood and 150 lbs of misc parts. the topper ... an autographed picture of me, standing next to my z, authenticating that i once owned it. now, you mull that over, while i ponder you punching hole in the rear valance. wayne p.s you know you want to do this !!!
  3. my z is in pieces in the driveway. $$$ and time, the usual story. i guess as long as Alex doesn't sell his, i won't sell mine. been tempted though. i am thinking of showing up in san carlos just to see what's there to see. hope it's not raining. looks like winter is back !
  4. Datsun Breakfast: @ San Carlos Airport -February 26 @ 9AM - $1 (san carlos) Reply to: sale-133457400@craigslist.org Date: 2006-02-12, 9:46PM PST I'd like to invite all datsun owners to a breakfast get-together Sunday, February26 @ 9AM Let's meet at 9AM at the local San Carlos Airport (In Northern California). In the small adminstration building, there is a pretty good breakfast spot called, The Sky Kitchen Restaurant. Sky Kitchen Restaurant 620 Airport drive San Carlos, CA 94070 (650) 595-0464 http://www.bayareapilot.com/san_carlos_airport.htm For those unfamilar with the airport, the restaruant is surrounded by several hundred planes and is situated close to the runways. I'm not an aviation expert, but there are some really great aircraft to admire & check out. There is also plenty of FREE parking available only steps from the restaruant. The airport is located in San Carlos, CA, off highway 101 @ the Holly/Redwood Shores off ramp. It is only a few miles from either the San Mateo Bridge (Highway 92) or the Dumbarton Bridge (Highway 84). http://www.bayareapilot.com/SkyKitchMap.htm (MAP) Here are photos from last year: http://dimequarterly.tierranet.com/events/2005SanCarlosAirport/galleria.php I'm hoping our local Bay Area datsun owners can stop by, chat with friends, and check out the great rides! After breakfast, we can go on a nice cruise up on Highway 92 / Skyline. If you plan attending, let me know...I'll try to let the restaruant know how many folks will be attending. Thanks, Dan Zubkoff San Mateo, CA http://badroc.org zubkoff@sbcglobal.net
  5. maybe too much John Cleese as a child ? LOL say, are you still gonna want my scarab as part of the deal ?
  6. thanks for not paying for the repairs until you pick it up. should suggest to the shop, do it right or not get paid. Pete, am i gonna have to pick up the costs on that 406 ???? looks like i'm gonna have to put that $2500 in an escrow account, before you start sinking any more money into the z and try and raise the price on me. i'm kinda excited about more cubic inches. i know you lay awake at night and think, Wonder what Wayne might like on the z ?? rest assured, with your excellent taste, most anything you do, is fine with me. you still set the standards ! wayne
  7. use a sprinkler elbow and a section of hosing. put the elbow into the hole, glue it in, slide the section of hose over the elbow, clamp it on. hose long enough to drop below the fender.
  8. saw a red 280zx convertible last week, coming off hiway 17 onto camden ave. one of the days it wasn't raining. top was down, driver's scarf blowing in the wind. couple days later, saw the red 72 240z convertible z i got screwed out of, driving down san tomas expressway. i thought it had been sold to and moved out of state. sort of excited me and pissed me off at the same time. looked the same as when i 1st saw it 10 years ago. red, bbs wheels, black top. it was about half a block ahead of me, turned off to the right at an intersection before i could catch up to it. i think convertible z cars are beautiful. great lines. wished it was me in that 280 zx drop top, looked like a swoppy XKE.
  9. those seem to be all quality parts. nothing outrageous. the $750 is probably less than what the parts cost. is it a long block or a collection of parts ? if the stuff is new, this is a pretty good deal. is the block already bored for the pistons ? how are the mains, are they true ? is the crank straight ? does it need to be turned ? as long as everything is new ( with exception of the block ), you would have what sounds like a good foundation for building an engine. here's a list of current chevy engines on san fransisco bay area craigslist. http://www.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=1&subAreaID=0&query=chevy+engine&catAbbreviation=pts&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max
  10. escalan over at classic came with a solution. you need to remove the fenders. on the sides of the firewall you will find the drain holes from the cowl. one on either side. put a plastic sprinkler pipe elbow in there. take a piece of tubing, slide it over the elbow. run the hose down to the ground. glue everything in place, put a clamp around the hose. put the fender back in place, there should be enough room to have the hose stick out behind the fender. i have done this on my 72 z. water and crap now runs to the ground instead of being trapped behind the fender. there are pix over at classicz.com oh, a friend ( does custom body work ) welded in replacement metal panels from victoria, think tab makes em. he ended up cutting em up as they didn't fit the way they should. told me if he was charging me labor, would have been cheaper if he had custom fabbed the panels himself, than what he would have charged me to modify those premade panels. just tossing it out there.
  11. take a look at this site http://www.geocities.com/bry593/coilover/coilover.htm
  12. i am still in some what of a blue funk over body shop deal that went sour. instead of working on my scarab, spent my money gather high quality parts for my son's baja bug. for a quick reference of parts and instructions, check here. http://www.electric-life.com/ i bought my kit from summit. . on my 240z doors were cut and metal welded in place. i haven't yet finished installing the kit. one thing i do know, is you need to keep the springs that pull back on the rods that lead to the latch mechanisms. otherwise, the latches won't lock properly and the doors may pop open. you are correct, cowl hood scoops get glued in place. but hoods are not subjected to the abuse a door is. you could cut and shape a fiberglass plug of sorts, fill the hole where the door handle used to be. glass layers in behind the plug to hold it into place. fill in around the plug with good filler and primer, sand it all smooth. if you don't drive the car much, you will get away with it for a while. eventually, it will crack around the plug. years, months, weeks, days, hours ???? no idea. but, a little sanding, filler primer and, paint, you are good as new. this is why when people modify head light buckets, getting rid of the seam at the fenders, they don't just bondo over the seam. it will crack. to do it right, it will have to be welded.
  13. the stores add an automatic 40% built in surcharge for using their services instead of going directly to ups. most kinkos have a fed ex in em and are a lot cheaper than the stores are. few years back, had an MSA areo II kit shipped to san jose from texas. ups was around 300. seller was nice enough to take em to grey hound, was i think 150 bucks for shipping. shipper will need to box em ( when they have room, grey hound puts em in the cargo areas of buses headed in your direction. handlers try to be careful, but they are not in the cargo business. things may get placed on top of em, or they may get tossed in there by one uncaring employee used to handling duffle bags ) in sturdy cardboard and pad them well. i would suggest a wood ribbed box. build a wooden frame around the doors and slip that into the box. make a box out of a discarded refrig or washing machine box. with grey hound, seller takes to bus depot, they weigh, set the price. when is delivered, grey hound calls you and you go to bus station and pick em up. this is why they are cheaper ( a bunch !!! ). they don't deliver to your house. they ship when they have room on the bus ( they usually have room on every bus ). they don't have a 3 day delivery warranty. my shipment was delayed when items were transferred at a bus stop in OK. and no one bought a ticket to las vega. was on the next bus 18 hours later. grey hound has an electronic tracking system that works very well. if you don't want to ship greyhound. ask shipper if he or a friend knows anyone that works in any type of business that ships items out. a friend of mine through work, owns a telecom business, he ships and receives product daily. he uses fed ex and gets prices almost as cheap as greyhound. i pay him and he ships out what ever i send. saves person on other end a bunch of money. again, the ups stores in mini malls bump up the shipping price, this is how they stay alive. if you can't find someone that is traveling cross country, see if you can get shipper to take doors to a real ups center or a fed ex. otherwise, greyhound is the best option. good luck with this.
  14. anyone know anything about this stuff ? http://www.evapo-rust.com/HowERworks.html
  15. pontiac never had small blocks or big blocks. all the modern pontiac V8 engines ( 1955 up ) are based on the same size block. however, you want to cruise those websites Grumpyz presented and talk with a machinist that knows pontiacs to get proper info. it has been a while since i've owned/worked on a pontiac ( had several, among em a factory 1965 tri power GTO 4 speed), but if i remember, due to water jacket passages and such, along with the bore size, not all pontiac heads are interchangeable.

  17. thanks ! did it all with smoke and mirrors
  18. chris, iff'n u mean me. nope. 25 yrs with ma bell. climbing poles, hanging wire. while installing lines at one of apple's bandley bldgs, steve jobs called me an a hole inches from my face. he later said he was sorry, shook my hand said he thought i was someone else.
  19. check this ad on craigslist in northern calif, near frisco http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/118211651.html has some nice pix at the bottom. i don't know the seller and apparently the pix are just what he wishes his 710 looks like. oh, by the way. hold that 710 upside down, you get oil.
  20. with the zx, nissan did what ford did with the original mustang. in 73 they made the grande mustang. wanted to appeal to a larger ( big bottomed ) audience. plusher, more doo dads, bells and whistles. it worked well for pontiac. when they bastardized the firebird and trans am, turned em into chick cars, the trans am sold like hot cakes. nissan did the same thing, took a niche car and made it appeal to the masses. in 1978 when the '79 zx went on sale women, disco stu, and potential caddillac customers that wanted a sporty car flocked to the dealerships. the 79 zx out sold the previous z car. it was the best selling z series car of its time. to those who went bonkers over the z car from 69 to 78, nine years, the zx was not the proper evolution of the z car. check out the vw bug, it maintained the same basic shape, the mechanics and safety improving year to year. while the basic shape of the zx is close to the z car, it is none the less fat and bloated when compared to the z car. it is a disco period car, gold chains, fake leather jackets, polyester leisure suits, horrible music and the funky chicken. that may be the reason the zx gets so little respect from the rock and rollers. different times. i'm a big vette fan. with a few exceptions, i don't care for the 78 through 85 corvettes either. plastic pigs. maybe for the same reasons. that said, in 81 when my brand new 81 el camino SS broke down for the 30th time in less than 5000 miles, san jose datsun had a black 79 zx GL on the lot. $10,000. fully loaded. earlier that day, they had a 72 240z on the lot. i stopped in to check out the z car. it had sold an hour before i got there. salesman talked me into driving the zx. from the inside, comfortable, power everything, great stereo, seats fit me. 5 speed shifted smooth as silk. plenty of power. wasn't quick as the 240z, but felt better than the 280z a friend owned. sales manager let me take it by myself, told me be back in an hour, he was going to lunch. he took the el camino (was on my way home from work, air condition came on, it was 38 degrees outside, air would not shut off, there was ice forming inside on the base of the windshield ). drove the zx home, to a girl friend's, to my best friend's, my parent's. short ride from san jose to summit road on hiway 17. back to the dealership. wow !!! until then, i didn't like the zx because it wasn't a z car. the 78 vette wasn't a vette. the 78 trans am wasn't a trans am, the 77 z/28 was not a z/28. i was sure of all this. but now, after spending an hour in this zx, while it wasn't a z car, it was certainly a kissing cousin and i wanted it. traded in the el camino. drove the zx for 2 years, banzai runs to pomona ( swap meet ), multiple trips to portland and cottage grove in oregon. back and forth to work. my only transportation ( that i could count on anyway ). it would cruise all day long at 100 mph, straight and true. due to an aftermarket chrome wire wheel out of true or balance at 126 mph the right rear would develop a bad vibration at 130 the car would begin to hop ( speeds according to the speedo in the car ). avg. mpg around town was 16 to 17, worst was 13 in stop and go when lights went out on san tomas expressway during commuter hours. hiway mpg 26 to 28. best was a 60 mph ride to pomona ( for some reason, the highway patrol was running escort down hiway 5 all the way from los banos to magic mountain ), best mpg was over 30, think i got 32 mpg. although i don't consider it to be a z car, and apparently at the time neither did nissan as they called it a ZX to distinguish it from the z car, the 280zx will always be one of my favorite cars. as a compromise vehicle meant to appeal to the fat bottomed crowd, it hit most of the marks as an adult GT coupe. oh, though no one asked, at the time, i was 5'6", 24 yrs old, weighed in at 125 lbs. after 2 yrs. i sold the zx and bought a 70 corvette LT-1 roadster ( 350 cu inch 350 hp, 4 speed convertible ) and started restoring it and using it as my daily driver. the 240z is the z car. the 280zx is the zx car. the 67 to 69 camaro is the camaro. 70 and beyond, share the name, but not the soul of the original. i don't think its snobbery, one isn't better than the other. it's plain vanilla versus rocky road ice cream. some prefer it pure and simple, others prefer a bit more flavor. where do i stand ? i like em both. that said, the 240z is the z car. the 260 is not the z car. the 280 is not the z car. the zx is not the z car. the 300z is not the z car. the 350z is not the z car. the 69 to 73 ( and i question the 73 ) are the true z cars. everything after that are completely different animals, in spirit and form. my 82 cents worth, hope it was worth the read.
  21. contact apple computer or dealer. appears that they are replacing broken nanos under warranty. breakage from dropping and scratched screens are the biggest issues. article i read, says if you hold the center button down for 20 seconds it may reset it. apple is working on a carrying/protective case. http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/28/technology/personaltech/ipod_nano/
  22. found this on local craigslist san fransisco bay area northern california. i guess i could tow mine over and turn the engine over with the starter motor. :-0 dynospotracing.com dyno day 12/10 free dyno (san jose downtown) Reply to: sale-116104715@craigslist.org Date: 2005-12-05, 8:44PM PST Howit, dynospotracing is willing to do 3runs for 65.00 if we can get 10 or more cars hightest Horse power gets free run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please call Phone: 408-271-9800 to make appointment 1798 Angela Street San Jose, CA 95125
  23. foose is building new camaros based on the 1969 rs-z/28 $125,000. GM won't be using the camaro name anytime soon. they shafted a town in canada, that gave em all kinds of tax breaks and i believe even paid to upgrade the roads and the plant so that GM wouldn't move the production of the camaro and firebird to another location. in turn, GM signed a contract that if that town did all those things, GM would only produce the camaro and firebird in that town, in that plant. the plant was not as profitable as GM wanted it to be. would be heaps cheaper to build the cars in mexico or argentina. the town made more concessions to GM. GM wanted out of the contract, out of that plant. used the excuse of lagging sales to close the plant. sales were not off enough to warrant closing the plant, nor were they off enough to kill the car. GM wanted out of the contract with that town. articles in several industry magazines as well as car and driver. according to the contract, i think it said that for the next 20 years, all camaros and firebirds built by GM must be built in the plant in canada. GM will most likely declare bankruptcy, void current union contracts, nullify their contract with past and future employees to provide pensions. will also allow them to rewrite wage and benefit promises specified in current union contracts. but, not to hijack your thread, you ain't gonna see no new camaros or firebirds, unless GM gets a favorable ruling in bankruptcy court where they can convince a judge or two that they need the name plate to survive and that building em in mexico is the way to make money. otherwise that town in canada can sue the pants off GM for building camaros and firebirds, should GM not build em in that plant in canada. that said ... the only race i got into with my 72 scarab during the brief time i had it running between reengineering and upgrading, was with a newer z/28. at the time, faded blue paint, stock 280z hubcaps, single pipe under the rear bumper. looked like any other beat up 240z. younger asian man. looked at me. i smiled and nodded. he gave me the piece of crap look. light changed, he took off quick, but no race. looks to his left, i'm still there. 4 blocks, next light red. gives me the annoyed with you look. light turns green, he pulls out quick, gonna show me a thing or two. gets a car length between us, i jump on it a bit. he looks to his right, i smile, he's not happy. 4 blocks another red light. no one around but us. same as other lights. at this light, he won't even glance at me. green light, he lights up the tires, sparks and smoke, he's pulling away. since i got it running ( was parked, broken, by previous owner for 10 yrs ) this was the scarab's 1st trip of more than a mile or so from home. decided, i would chance it, if anything broke call triple a for a tow home. he was out a car on me and moving. i jumped on it hard, topped 1st gear , grabbed 2nd, was right along side him, passed him as i topped 2nd, grabbed 3rd, he was a car behind me, i let off and coasted into 4th at about 75 mph. took the count of 3 and he shot past me. next light is red. he's along side me on my left. light goes green he real quick jumps in left turn lane, runs red light, shoots down a side street. guess he was a bit miffed trying to figure out how he lost to what appears to be a beat up stock 1972 240z. one and only race, within an hour of pulling back into my driveway, i took my z apart again. upgrades and modifications. it hasn't been on the road since and that was over a year ago. start these things and run out of money. you think i'd know better, LOL
  24. my neighbor casts gold and silver jewlery. tells me that if i can carve the original scarab beetle out of wax, he can use the lost cast style mold and make me the scarab style vent bug. hed use a soft metal maybe aluminum and polish it. if anyone has carving skills ...
