  1. I stripped the teeth off of third gear, just as my cousin has on the last 2 T5's and a few others here have. Right now, there's basically 3 choices of trannies for us - BWT5, Nissan 5sp and G-Force which really isn't something i'd consider right now due to the way they've been handling themselves and the price ($2k). So... I'm going to try the Nissan unit for now. I ran the a few Nissan 5sp's in my first Z back in '87 and blew 2 of them (snapped the mainshaft in one and blew the syncho's in the other) but, we'll see how it holds up. If i go through the Nissan unit quickly, i have a feeling the Z's going to sit for a while until we can come up with a stong alternative which wont cost $2k. Time will tell i guess. Sorry Sabum, dont mean to clutter your post. Hope you IC gets installed nice-nice
  2. I'll try and get some overhead pics of how the IC is mounted this weekend Sadum. Looking now at that second pic i posted, that may have been when i had the smaller NPR in there. When i ran 12.4 Stock L28 Stock T3 Stock '82 ECM Stock FPR Stock throttle body Smaller NPR IC (Looks good WigenOut ) DSM BOV 370cc injectors Twisted stock AFM 2.5" DP to 3" to Dynomax bullet - all mandrel Threaded wastegate actuator T5 w/ACT PP, street disk 240mm flywheel 3.54 cv's 235/60/15 BFG DR's MSD 6a - Accel coil Electric fan Added Since Large NPR MSD FPR Line-Loc She's on the jackstands now waiting for the Nissan 5sp and the new Yoko's but, that's about it. Hopefully soon i will yank the motor and do a T3/T4, non-egr intake, 60mm TB, ported head and 300zx ECM/MAF. I'm just trying to get this thing in it's semi basic setup into the 11's then i'll start to do more mods.
  3. Go kick some @ss Terry! Good luck. 60 foot - 1.60 1/8th - 6.86 at 106 1/4 - 10.87 at 129 BTW - You can always ship the Z up to NJ and i'll keep her "tuned" while your away Would be a shame to have her sit dormant for 3-5 years! lol. What's up in Tokyo, if you don't mind me asking?
  4. Thanks Forrest, Bill. I had a lightweight in my first Z (below) back in 1987 and loved the response as well. Check out those fog lights and that off-road ground clearance! lol...
  5. Welp, after all this, i decided not to lighten up the stocker. I took it to a few machinists today and they said it was do-able to bring it down near 17lbs, but they all showed reservations about the safety issue. Good enough to change my mind. I'll guess i'll just use the stock 24lb'r for now. If i could find a used light (10-13lb) aftermarket wheel, id try it i guess. I would just hate to spend over $300 on a piece that i may pull out in a short amount of time. It's tough being budgeted Thanks again for everyone's input.
  6. Pete, my cousin and I are both interested in the L28/T5 hybrid. I'm putting an '82-83 datsun tranny in to run for now but i have a feeling it's not going to last. Please keep us posted when you get more info on $. Thanks for the legwork.
  7. Thanks Clifton. Appreciate the pic comparison,
  8. Sounds like it could be the WG Actuator but, do you have a POV? Is your BOV leaking? IC silicon connections in good shape? Just some quick thoughts.
  9. Doug, i made a mistake in my reply to you on my DR size. I'm running the 235/60/15's BFG G-Force traditional tread. The 26" diameter puts my Z at a good RPM going through the trap with the 3.54's.
  10. No problem. I have no idea who the person selling them is, just did a quick ebay scan and saw them. I'd ask the guy for the part # off the box or at least off both sets of springs (should be a different # for fronts & backs) and check with Eibach to make sure they're correct for the 280. Hate to see you get stuck with the wrong ones. Good luck.
  11. Clifton, Drax, Jon.. Thanks for the replies. Clifton, My Z is basically a "sunny day" driver but i'm still going to dragrace it a bit just to (hopefully) get it into the 11's and then i will focus on more open track type racing which is why i'd rather not go as light as 10lbs. If the 17lb weight shows a good improvement as Drax says, and is 100% safe, i think that would be a good compromising weight for what i'm looking for. I'll make sure the machinist i take it too doesn't shave down the bolt hole edge and makes a radius cut. Appreciate the info all.
  12. Thanks Drax. 17lbs sounds good. Trust it fully?
  13. Even easier Thanks for the added info.
  14. I didn't think you could push the ball down any further then stock and knew to make a true short shifter, you need to increase the length between the pivot and ball, which is why i mentioned re-drilling the pivot higher. What i forgot to mention is using a different stick like the truck unit, with a longer pivot to ball length, when doing this. But from what your saying Jon is that the ball will go further down into the tranny then the stock shifter ball does? I guess i'll find this all out when i get the ZX unit soon. Thanks for the info.
  15. I'm going to be swapping the blown T5 out soon and thought about lightening the 240mm flywheel up a bit while i'm in there. The Fidanza unit is real nice but @ 10-11lbs, it's too light for me. AZC has lightweight steel ones @ 13.5lbs but i remember Jon (Jmortensen) saying that a bunch of machinists looked at this flywheel and were concerned about thickness. I think the 240mm in it's stock form it weighs 23lbs (?) so i was figuring to reduce it to around 16lbs which should show a good improvement in rev speed. I'm just curious to know if you guys think this is a safe weight to shave the stock cast unit down too? Anyone know of a 240mm flywheel that's proven safe that weighs in at around 16lbs? I'd like play ball with my son on both feet when he's older
  16. Damn. Maybe it's a problem with IE6? Anyway, if someone could send it to me, i'd appreciate it - Jersey@cptclabs.com Thanks.
  17. I believe you're right cygn, the short shift kit that MSA sells is only for the short "eared" nissan 5speed. I did read somewhere that it's easy to make a homemade short shift kit with the long eared tranny by doing just what you mentioned - drilling new holes above the stock pivot, but for the life of me, i can't find the post or the site i read about it. Forgive me if i missed it but, is the 200sx 5speed suppose to be stronger, or have better ratios, then the 81-83ZX tranny?
  18. lol... pumpkin killer. That's good. Yes, broke down last year and bought the exact G-Force DR's you mentioned. I only ran with them at the track once at the end of last year but they hooked awesome. My wife can't understand why i need new tires after 2 years when i dont drive the Z everyday... obviously she doesn't know what i do at the track right before i stage I really have to praise the Dunlop Sp5000 that i've ran for the last 2 years... got me good into the 12's and pretty darn good wear considering about 40-50 track runs logged.
