My FD3 in a tunnel or under a bridge is MUSIC! That sucker sounds so nice when the second turbo comes on - it just screams like a formula car. Love that sound! Mine isn't so freeflowing it sounds like a burbling motorboat though

What fuel pressure? Bump it up enough and you're good to go. Toip feed or side feed injector? That makes a difference as to how well it handles fuel pressure apparently.

No way, I'm waiting for the AEM Race System to come out. SAME features and software as the PnP system on my Supra but it'll have a harness and better docs for starting from scratch. This is a serious ECU rivaling the Motec stuff for much less. The PnP boxes are $1200 or so, dunno' what the race units w/harness will run. It'll be worth it IMO and you can remove the distributor if you want but you would need a crank trigger etc.. Docs on this system are on my site if you're interested - AEM hasn't really published them and you have to get an ECU to get them but... www.blkmgk.comaem.nsf

FWIW, some guyon SupraForums is talking about selling MKIII with 1JZ conversions in them. I think that would be pretty danged sweet!
-
Agree with Davy. Goto www.jagsthatrun.com and order their Z book. Read it a few times till nearly memorized and then plunge in. It's not really a hard swap and damn near drops in if you follow their directions. I'm VERY happy with everything I got from JTR - mount plates, trans mount, rad mount. The rest I did myself - no biggie.
-
I'd be more inclined to post pics somewhere to snicker at than put flyers on a car. At least with pics people can make their own judgements whereas with a flyer you're being pretty obnoxious and asking for an assbeating.

If you're that lazy the SBC swap is for you, it's cake.

Side windows - razor and carb cleaner The rear would be a problem though, dunno how best to do that

Ya' with a Lightning pulley they're traping @ 117! These suckers are going to fly with a decent exhaust and intake on them - Ford corked them up to get past Federal Drive By Noise Standards! The blower is apparently pretty noisy so everything else got choked. SupraForums has a vid of one running high 12s at 117mph with just a Lightning pulley. Sweet! That car in this vid is an older FOX body - the motor does fit just fine. Not seen one on the street but it would be pretty cool to own IMO. And no, you do NOT have to drop a subframe to put headers in the 4.6 Cobra Mustang. My friend's shop does them OFTEN and while the long tubes are a bitch to install I've yet to see him drop a subframe. The long tubes also don't do squat for power over shorties - dyno confirmed - but on these supercharged cars that might be different. Longtubes cost a ton and the added cost to install has made them a poor investment until now, I'll be VERY interested to see what they do on a new Cobra. There are at least two in my area now but neither has come in for a free dyno check at the shop. Supposedly you can pick up close to 60HP with a good exhaust and one mag found 15RWHP with a good intake. That's just plain sick! Road tests claim it handles well - neutral - so until there are more reports out there I wouldn't run out for that Z06 just yet. Heck, they're even selling at sticker price and not jacked to the moon, bonus! What's a Z06 cost these days? I think the Cobra coupe's are coming in at $35K? P.S. The iron block was B.S. - I cannot believe they did that! They've held 650+RWHP and for this Ford claims they needed an iron block?! There's got to be more to this. Cost maybe? Harmonics with the blower? Hrm... There have also been reports of failures in these cars already but I don't know how widespread it is or what exactly the problems were. Hopefully just a onesy twosey teething thing.

Doh, you're right that isn't going to be easily plumed back in Sounds like it's either time for an SDS MAP based system or a different BOV. I need one myself but I'm not sure I want one super loud - just effective.

They've hit 1040RWHP our at SP just recently. stock block but built guts of course. For a Z I'd look at the smaller 1JZ I think just to get the added revs. Dunno' what would work best for a tranny but the 6speed sure is sweet to drive! Whacky clutch setup though with that damned dual mass flywheel - ick. As for the Skyline - I'm waiting for it to make it here. Don't count out the STI or the EVO VII. However from some reading I've done the Skyline requires internal mods and transaxle mods fairly early on in it's modification curve so while that AWD is awesome it's pricey as heck! From a bang for the buck standpoint the Supra is the Buick GN of the 90s IMO. Still pretty expensive though but they're pretty tough to break. Think I've got a bad ignition coil though - little things like that suck I hear ya' Scottie, on the drag strip these are a bitch to hookup I've found. If I'm driving you're winning They make big numbers on the dyno and fly on the highway but it's peaky power that's not as easy to put to use on the dragstrip. Don't tell the other Supra owners I said that though as it's apparently blasphemy to admit a Supra fault Most of my driving is street though and while folks like Jesus can call a T88H a "street" turbo I'd like somehting more responsive. Will probably try to get a ride in a T78 Supra before too long just to see how it spools. Want to find out if I have a choice of exaust housings for that sucker too. Agree on the "street" definition although right now my car can be a PITA in traffic it can still run cool A/C and be driven - daily (it is). I don't want to get away from that and require nitrous to spool We'll see, the ECU is keeping me fairly busy right now as is the possibly faulty coil - seems to NOT work when heatsoaked but I'm trying to be sure it's the coil.... Still learning about it all! -
Soounds like it might also need to be tightened up a little if it's venting that easily. Venting it into the intake is the correct way to go but it won't sound as cool
-
Thanks! I'm actually tempted to subscribe just to see what's going on across the pond IF anyone can track down the exact issue numbers I'm tempted to order. $7 AUS each plus shipping - hrm could get expensive! Subscription is $47 Aus + shipping. Time to break out the conversion tables Appreciate the link though, this would be WAY cool to follow up on!

One of those cars would be sweet! I've seen several VERY nice examples on the WEB. One of the old Lotus low slung Lotus cars with a rotary would also float my boat. Not sure I'd do a V8 in the 914, sick as that would be but imagine say a 20B rotary? Buick V6? I saw a 911 somewhere that had the Buick out on the WEB. How much does a 914 in good shape go for anyway? Aren't those transaxles a bit expensive? Like I need another project Heh 510 with a 1JZ? Corolla? Chevette?

Others have done WEB sites, as you know, and the threats they've gotten have been pretty bad - so far no one has managed to figure out who the kid is. Wouldn't it just suck if one of those flyers ended up on your car or some damage was done to your car? What about if they start dissing Domestics and some sort of "war" breaks out with each side vandalizing the others? This sort of crap happens here occasionally with guys snapping wings off of "ricers? and keying one another's cars. Do you really want to stir the pot on this one? I look at it this way... I see kids going down th eroad trying to do anything they can to look "different". LED valve caps (I'm tempted to get a set for fun), LED washers, neon, the works. They're just trying to fix up the car they've got - just like most of us probably did as a kid and probably with a little better budget. Hell, I did all sorts of stuff to my Mom's Chevy Citation X11 when I was younger. It was a 6cylinder car with a stick and had some balls - small ones. Friends of mine kept trying to setup a race with one of the local clapped out Camaros firmly believing I had a chance of winning Eventually Ford came out with a quick car I could afford and after owning and fixing up an 84 Mustang GT (did some stupied stuff to it too) I finally ended up with an 88 LX that got fixed up pretty good. Look around, except for buying an older muscle car, which many parents won't allow, these kids are stuck with wrong drive Hondas and Ford Focus. They're working with what they've got and our best way to get them to think differently is to set a good example and give them a ride in our cars - not bash them. They'll get older and learn and be embarressed at what they did just like I am Hell, I'm quite sure that most of them have never spent time in a fast V8 car or hopped up ZXT. They think what they drive is "fast yo'!" and considering that some of those cars come with as much or more power than my Mustang(s) did they probably give soem of th eDomestics a surpriuse with a few tweaks. I know a certain 455 Olds used to give my 84 Mustang HELL for awhile - a set of 3.73geard swapped from 2.73s and a new intake had him shifting at redline w/ignition breakup the following weekend instead of walking away. He still won but... I needed NAWS man, 2 bottles! Now, maybe if the Domestic car manufacturers would pull their heads out of their asses and build somehting to compete at reasonable prices... The Ford Focus, the WRX, possibly the Vibe, what else is there? Almost none of it is RWD and it's nearly as bad as the Hondas (okay the WRX is cool but where's the STI?) - the market won't support it and they've even killed off the Camaro! Hope the GTO kix ass but it's already got a waiting list supposedly The Lightnings maybe? The EVO? Who knows but Detroit has made some stupid moves with regards to the younger kids, they don't buy Hondas and rice them 'cause they like front wheel drive, they buy them because that's what's affordable, Mom will insure, and 'cause there's parts for them.. I'll step off my soapbox now... P.S. One of the "kids" around here has a VR6 Golf (I think). It makes 300FWHP with a turbo and he wrenched it all himself. VERY understated but the local Camaro idiots who dyno right about 320RWHP laugh at him. I heard last Saturday that he's trying to get his hands on an AWD drivetrain setup and that another friend of his has the SAME 300horse setup in an older GTI or somesuch. I'd love to have this kid's turbo VR6 even if he couldn't get the AWD installed in it. Can't weigh very much and it sounds stock...

Ya' know what's funny? There's a guy in Florida, Scottie may know him - Jesus I think his name is, that runs a T88H on the street! Read over some of the SupraForums posts sometime - if you can get past some of the 'tudes and read some of the dyno stories you'll find that 500RWHP is somewhat common. Before you get too excited though recall that a Supra weighs like 3500+LBS. That motor and the 1JZGTE apparently fit in the 240Z though Can you imagine what the weight loss would do to your ET? One of the other odd things you'll notice is that Supra guys tend to talk in RWHP numbers most of the time. None of this guessing what's at the crank with 20% conversion factors. Recipes for getting these motors, and yes the 7MGTE motor, beefed up are all over the place. Look closely at the dyno curves though and you'll see that much of the power is top-end, as in 4K+ RPMs. With a stock redline of 7200RPM that's a pretty thin powerband. They can supposedly be safely bumped to nearly 8K but that requires an aftermarket ECU or one that's been PROMmed. Wait, I've GOT an aftermarket ECU! Honestly, a Lightning truck powerband is much more usable even if the power is lower. Peak power isn't everything and there's a reason why Supras are often called Dyno Queens. On the highway though, from a roll, the Supra is just plain sick! My car downshifted from a cruising 6th to 3rd gear at say 65mph will actually get a little darty it's accelerating so hard! Heh, that was when I was running higher boost (390RWHP 427ftlbs), I'm only running 200KPA or about 1BAR right now but once I'm done chasing a possible ignition coil problem that will be raised as I continue to tune. So yeah, there ARE Supra guys who really feel that 850+ crank HP isn't enough. Frankly, I'm NOT one of them. 550RWHP without having to add cams or go into the motor will make me happy, at least for now. I can only imagine what that power would do to a stock Z rear though The 1JZ with it's dual, not sequential, turbos and it's higher rev ability might be a better choice - but I'd want the Supra's 6speed (*$*). This trans is flat out nice and is a close ratio box that feels great. Unfortunatly it's a Getrag box that getting service for is next to impossible I really wish I'd considered a Supra motor in my 240Z (shrug). Maybe an old skool Celica? Think it would fit in a 510? -
2.5liter twin turbo motor. Do these only come with automatics? That's all I've ever seen darn it. Got to admit I'm burning for one of these but I just don't know how to swing it. If someone does this swap document the heck out of it Supposedly a local place here has many import engines, maybe I'll swing by with a tape measure sometime. Actually wouldn't mind seeing what a backup engine for my Supra would cost. (shiver) Hrm, anyone got links to learn more about this motor? Higher revving that the 2JZGTE I'd ASSume but what else?

I quizzed a private mailing list I'm on dedicated to Supras running the new AEM ECU. One of them has been making really big power until he had a crankwalk issue (long story) but I didn't know what turbo he was running. Below is his response, it seems he's running a T78. He sells these kits as well as several of the much higher dollar ones so his response is interesting in light of the fact that he could've steered me towards a much more expensive kit.. We'll see. Got to get fuel done first! As for th eRPS, their kits apparently have been found to have some fitment problems. stories vary though so it's hard to say for sure. Sadly, I don't think that Greddy manifold would fit ina Z but I promise to take measurements if anyone decides on a 2JZ swap. The 1JZ has certainly caught my eye! -
If it comes down to it I've got a 6speed LT1 flywheel in my garage gathering dust, a reasonable offer and it would be yours.
-
I have the solid mount in my car as well as urethane bushings everywhere. IMO in my car it's not bad at all. No whining or anything although I've heard that complaint from others (shrug).
-
Does the $2K pricetag include ECU and complete engine wiring harness - not cut up? If not that price will rise noticably! Try to get the engine harness etc. or you'll be piecing it together IMO buying an injected motor complete is a great way to go as rebuilds tend to cost more than you expect - mine sure did.
-
You guys see the 700+ RWHP 7MGTE posted over on SupraForums? Dyno vid and all
-
IMO get a W/B O2 sensor and meter! It makes tuning EFI 100% easier! Can the SDS datalog? If so that and say an FJO W/B and you're in fat city. Mine gives me a realtime display of A/F and the computer uses it too - sweet! Don't even bother with the Autometer type guages - get a real one and possibly save your engine. Before I got mine I thought my car was feeling pretty peppy - sure it was running lean as heck! Much safer now. The W/B will pay for itself quickly and if you do it right you can use it on multiple cars. IF you cannot afford the FJO look at the DIY W/B guys out of OZ, their setup is supposed to be good too.

.81BAR? Umm actually I talked to a guy running 22PSI on pump gas last Saturday. 20PSI is what another friend runs except on race gas which is 30PSI. There ARE faster spooling turbos and down the line if this one doesn't scratch my itch. However to get one of those right off the bat is something approaching $6K. T78 is less than $4K so... FWIW http://www.vache.org/supra/turbos.htm which gives some curves. An SP53 or SP66 is what I'd really like but... Those turbos will bolt to the Greddy kit so we'll see. The guys I've talked to say the lag isn't an issue and the curves seem to show it making about as much as my peak power now at 4500RPM - I can live with that I think. I've got time anyway, fuel is first. P.S. I'm a six speed. Here's another good URL -> http://www.to4r.com/to4r.html -
FINALLY!!! Sorry it took awhile guys but I've been busy and had to compress, align, and sharpen the images before hosting them. The scans were crooked and a little blurry http://www.blkmgk.com/Development/TestWEB.nsf/4691e0edd8a01bd6852569ae0075e9c4/998286deeaebb98b85256bec005e0ef3!OpenDocument If that doesn't work goto my front page in my sig, hit the Pics menu item on the left, and the first article should be the "1JZ Toyota in a Z" page If anyone knows what mags these came out of I'd like to buy reprints of them. More info on this swap PLEASE. I'm not ready to dump my V8 but BOY would htis be a cool swap!!
