Niiiice! I'd love to own that one. There's a guy around here with a MKIII who's hopped up the stock engine and is really tearing up some of the racers. I love it (lol). Forced induction rules and I don't much care what the valve cover says BTW - over on the Supra board there's a video of a turbocharged Dodge Avenger keeping up with a single turbo Supra on th ehighway. Freaking awesome! Crappy video but apparently the Avenger is built to the hilt. Sometimes I juat have to wonder WHY!!!!

Hrm, will many of the folks on the Japanese auction sites ship to the US? I mean for little things... I know that a bunch of micro RC sellers on E-Bay are shipping to th eUS and that ship times are decent. Just seems like it might be a good way to pickup stuff we have a hard time getting here. We need contacts in Japan dammit! -
where to get heim joints
BLKMGK replied to staledale's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Try this Aircraft Spruce Can you say source of GOOD Heim joints, AN fittings, and CF/Fiberglass/Kevlar? Oh yes, and they have a catalog as big as a phone book that they will ship you for FREE full of very nice handy toys... -
Have you considered going to a good muffler shop and having one made? Done right it could be better flowing than stock which will add horsepower - just ask Scottie

My personal Grumpy inquiry: Proper break-in procedure?

Speaking of magnets... I've always found that magnetizing the dipstick is a great way to allow me to make quick checks on engine health. If you pull the dipstick and find a TON of metal on it you know something's NOT right Just get a good strong magnet and stroke the dipstick in one direction only until it's got a charge (stop that pervs!). I also like the idea of putting those wraparoound magnets on the oil filter. I don't have one yet but the idea makes great sense to me - you can get the shavings trapped in the filter which gets disposed of at each change. Also - magnetic drain plugs are good too IMO. You can never have enough magnets around when the object is to remove ferrous metal! -
All of the SBF 5.0 motors put out that I know of were all iron. The only Lincoln 5.0 that put out 225HP that I know of was the LSC and even them I'm not sure about that. The intake will have the TB on the opposite side too I believe (shrug). BTW LSC could be had w/a 5speed I think. Been awhile since I've looked at any of them

I actually picked up that URL from th eSupraForums site. They were talking about this guy having two converted Lexus but I never realized it was Clint. Apparently he feels he doesn't need two and th efirst one will be SOLD. Vroom! Yeah, this new one will be NASTY! Those headers are about a grand and are th enorm for single turbo Supra unless you run a really fugly cast iron manifold. People feel that cast manifold is restrictive but that's abut to be put to the test by a guy who believes it's "good enough". Me, I'm up in the air about what manifold and turbo to run. $5K is a TON for a turbo kit (shiver) but doing it for less isn't realy easy in the Supra world. (sigh) Everyone who has a kit is in that ballpark We'll see - I'm not ready for that plunge - yet. My Supra is about to become a daily driver so downtime isn't something I'll be looking for. Hope to get additional mufflers on the Z next week and th ebigger headers from Rewarder so maybe it'll be quiet enough to drive more

THIS is going to be one nasty little Lexus! Check out this guy's HUGE pics. Sweeeet! http://home.austin.rr.com/turbolexus/pics/97conversion/

5K is pretty low for that motor - I'd be looking for the restriction. Stock car guys here run those motors pretty much stock N/A and they wiz the heck oout of them all night long no problem - 7K or so if I remember right. That is one TOUGH motor Ford put together!
-
"Only 60mm"?! The Mustang makes 225HP using a 55mm TB and you want to use 6 bigger ones? Had better be some looong runners or it's going to be pretty gutless down low and have no vac at all. 55+mm is pretty big per cylinder...

Supposedly the remote sensing thing is coming to Virginia. Guy on SupraForums spotted a truck not far from where I live - most uncool! They set them up where the car has to be under load up a hill too - cute. I've also heard of them on onramp accel lanes - jerks!
-
You funny Dan! I've got a friedn who's got a youngester living with him - same deal. These guys think that little 4bangers are the deal. He tries to tell them they've not got a clue but they don't want to listen to him. SOME are fast but most have never sat in a fast car on a long pull. Hell, I had one kid in the RX7 flipping out one day. When he drove it he would never go over 4K which is where boost really builds. I drove him in it and was hitting 7K plus with him hanging on for dear life! Would love to get a few of these kids in the Z or my Supra but I might have to make them wear Depends first...

Funny you mention this - I was just bitching on SupraForums about this. Know how much a Supra fuel rail goes for? About 2ft of rail and some small adapters for the intake manifold got for (drum roll) $425+!!! That's SANS injectors too. Big injectors are in th e850cc range and with those adapters it will take Bosche style peak hold units. Umm, over $165 apiece is what I recall seeing. These guys are crazy! You could make a rail and sell it for $200 to have guys lined up outside your door looking to buy it...

He must mean the VB conversion... Firsdt, get the JTR book. Read it. IMO this conversion is not nearly as "involved" as it might sound. Once I had my parts together it didn't take me all that long working evenings during the Winter to do it. If I had to do it again I could go MUCH faster. Seriously, most of us ahve figured out where the bumps are in the road and have paved them - I think this is a pretty easy swap. As for reliability - depends on how wild the drivetrain you pick is. Once dialed in I see no reason why a V8 Z isn't reliable - in facxt if it's not raining I may drive mine to work tomorrow!

Hrm, there's a shop not far from me that specializes in importing Japanese engines I'm told. Got them stacked to the ceiling is what one of the Honda guys told me. I wonder if he could get one at a reasonable cost? Had I only known - I'd have done something like that instead of th eSBC, seriously. I LOVE forced induction...

Heh, chatting with a friend the other day I asked him if anyting "interesting" had crossed the dyno. Well he says, there's a little white Honda running around with 300+HP at the front wheels you might not want to mess with! Doh! There are several Hondas around here that flat out fly, and about a zillion that can't get out of their own way. The ONE race I've had in the Supra was just such a little twerp. Trying to pass him to get around some traffic I had a ways in front of me. Pedal down just past cruising I'm wondering WHY I'm not passing the Honda faster Then I notice the crap pouring out of his exhaust pipe I eased into the gas, got next to him, and went WOT Gawd, let them all be that easy! This little sucker was a joke and I'll bet he thought he had something for me too. Sadly, lot's of these kids just have no idea what power really is, have never driven a "fast" car, and the mags that cater to them really don't help them very much... SportCompact seems somewhat good and has decent tech articles IMO but some of th ecrap out there for these guys is really bad. They're selling as much ass as they are car parts I swear!
-
Umm, no room to say NO.

Hrm, looks just like my 2JZGTE actually. 5spd? Stateside got 6speeds with only 6th being OD. Honestly, I think that a 2JZ would be a great swap, dunno hardly anything about the 1JZ and if I hadn't seen the 1JZ casting I'd have sworn that description was wrong. Went for $2K+ BTW so don't feel tooo bad. Watch SupraForums for engines coming up for sale...

Couple of things... anyone with that kind of cash to lay out for a hobby car does NOT have the time to attend school to wrench on it much less the time to spend wrenching on it except maybe once in awhile. The guys that sent big bux his way were busy making more bux while HE was supposed to be working on their cars. I've been there myself, with a MUCH smaller $ amount. I got hosed GOOD by a shop in Maryland that is STILL in business By the time I got my car back I just wanted it HOME with me. I then spent weeks tryng to sort it out and undid some of their bad work too. As for magazine tests... There's word out that one mag shot rolling pics of a car that wasn't running! It was TOWED and the strap Photoshopped out. The specs printed for the car were "expected" performance nunbers. Lot's of car mags do silly things but this was pretty bad IMO. SportCompact seems to be good, Turbo not bad, Super Ford was good I thought. MM&FF seems good, they've even printed drag tests of GM cars beating featured Mustangs Some of the others I dunno' about. Some of the Saleen tests I've seen vs what shows up on the dyno have been "suspicious". Hrm, so maybe MM&FF isn't AS bad but still a little bad? (lol) After all, how often do BAD articles get printed about anything in these things? Anyone else laugh at reported 5RWHP gains? C'mon that's dyno jitter and can be from a cooler engine too. I've SEEN this with my own eyes in back to back tests of the same car. Will be interesting to see what Hennesey does. SupraForums has also been ALL over this for awhile. Harder to be a crook these days with the wEB connecting everyone. FWIW guys in my area have been calling him a crook for awhile - at least a year - so this has been awhile coming.

Yup, beware PepBoys and Track's alternators. "Lifetime Warranty" translates to "A lifetime of swapping them out". Best of all is when the regualtors fail in an overvolt mode and you have to turn on every accessory you've got in order to keep from frying things Hrm, and I've alreayd killed one alternator with the V8 thanks to a grounding coil wire - surprised nothing else fried. Good luck and let us know how it goes. $400 is a really good price, you'd make that in parts if you really wanted to part it out. Welcome! P.S. RAR? -
Peter's work seems to be hit or miss. I've got a TON of his parts on my RX7 but stock boost w/some spiking. Car weighs alot less than the Supra and hangs with stock C5s on the highway to 130mph. The Supra would eat it alive once it got rolling. Power to weight is a big deal - Supras weigh as much as 3700lbs w/driver On the highway they really move out though. Top end is NOT where you want to mess with a Supra. There's at least one single Supra real near me. Dunno' his dyno numbers yet but 500RWHP is a cakewalk and 600RWHP is actually somewhat common at the wheels when you're talking single turbos. Go over to Supraforums and hit the Dyno section. Lots of guys post dyno sheets and the numbers are pretty sick. Unfortunatly power comes on around 4K and up so off the line can be a bit tricky. My clutch being a lightswitch doesn't help my cause. So far nothing has challenged me on the road but a little Honda, hopefully that will change soon as I'll be driving the car much more often to work here soon. Need to get the tags first, emissions is giving me problems Not sure how the Supra would fare against my Z. I'm down on power with the secondaries probably being an issue. But it's much lighter I'm also considering a bottle - cheap power! Delta in measured power between the Supra and Z is only 90RWHP so the Z should take it - until I start modding the Supra.

Yes, basic cooling theory is still in effect however if the cooling system is already marginal screwing with the timing can indeed make a difference. High and low curves exist but if the base is retarded it will hose everything across the map. Do the headers glow at all? Black soot out the pipe? Has it ever NOT overheated? Are you sure the timing mark is right? Lot's of room for error... -
Yup, same boat as me and I'm still carbed it seems. 750 same as me too, not sure on the model #. Try the clip trick with something like a bread tie but don't cinch it too tight. My secondaries are NOT opening near as I can tell - 300RWHP on the primaries only (grr). Figure out if they're NOT working first, then monkey with them otherwise you might screw it up worse.

Please keep us posted Grumpy! That intake looks REALLY nice and DOUG is a terrific guy who dishes out lot's of good advice on that forum. He's really good about not simpy talking up Holley and he sure knows their product line pretty good it seems. Nice guy! Make sure you take pics of th enew intake for us

How about a Datsun 510? Ford Mustang V8 or SVO. The Mustang II with a V8 is actually pretty formidable too. Ford Pinto fits a V8 just fine too or a Turbo 2.3liter. Merkur 2.3liter turbo. Sunbeam Tiger - saw one in the paper the other day for $6K ready to roll supposedly. Look at some of th eold school imports too. Lot's to choose from but that's what I can come up with off th etop of my head. I'd LOVE a 510 myself...
