  1. Be aware of one thing - SD systems don't compensate for mods as well as MAF systems do. SD systems rely on a lookup table based on RPM and MAP load to figure out fuel. MAF systems actually measure the air instead and can handle mods. Frankly, I like MAF better! However if you can modify the internal maps MAP sensed systems are simpler to use and have no restriction in the intake path. BTW, when you're tuning an EFI system you'll be making all sorts of changes, possibly often. Modifying the GM OEM ECU can be done obviously but make sure you understand that it's not as simple as an aftermarket system. Car must be idled or shut off while uploading and it's possible to screw up the ECU if things go awry. I don't think it's a bad idea mind you, I considered trying to do it with my older SBC, but what I was reading and the costs I was looking at just didn't add up. Before you go too far down this path be sure you compare the troubles and cost with say a Holley Commander system...
  2. Yup, and if power is removed some codes clear, others don't. If they pull the codes and the ones they want aren't all filled in or at least 99% of them they will not accept the test. Swapping an ECU one from car to another won't work. The car must be run for a certain period of time on the ECU. On the brighter side the OBDII stuff is "standard" so what they're looking for is "known". There's a thread on the Supraforums board about this. Folks are debating creating a "box" to simulate an ECU and fool the test I'm betting that if this gets done it will be damned nice and illegal as all get out. One of the guys talking about helping is an emissions tech (lol). Now that you've researched OBDII try looking up some data on OBDIII and some of the flat out crazy things that have been proposed. Can you say remote shut off of a vehicle? Pretty sure that was tossed out but you get the idea - legislators have gotten involved Look at the BMW M3 thread I posted awhile back - BMW is using data from the OBDII ECU to DENY warranty claims. I canonly imagine what might be done with the ever more extensive OBDIII data (sigh). I have no idea where the OBDIII stuff stands now but I don't think it's anything good. One swap I've been considering, a cheap swap BTW, is a 2JZGTE drivetrain into a Lexus SC300. Better believe it'll be a pre-96 car if I do it!!!
  3. If you can get Denso Iridiums for your car DO IT! I've got these in the Supra and they cured some BIGTIME ignition issues. Not only that but they're next to impossible to foul. I had a MAP hose split and my car was blowing BLACK smoke out the back it was so rich! Sure enough the car ran a little rough after this was fixed, for all of about 20mins. Then it cleaned right up and ran fine Little tiny electrodes on those bad boys and they cannot be gapped. The Iridium electrode is hard as heck, it won't degrade either. Seriously, I LIKE these plugs even if they do cost an arm and a leg. Sparkplugs.com has them...
  4. Would this be a Paxton "blue" pump? Is it having to lift at all? I've got one but haven't put it to too much hard work yet....
  5. If it's not baffled look at the first link for an AWESOME idea for baffling!
  6. Oooh! Another one that looks even better! http://cjsupra.kendra.com/PCV-Can.html Yeah, now that's NICE!
  7. Looking at these for my Supra actually. Be SURE to check out the reverse EL gauges - I think these would be VERY nice in a 240Z if you've kept the stock gauges. If you're swapping in Autometer gauges look at the Lunars
  8. http://www.y8s.com/celica/air-oil/ Me Likes! Can think of a few projects this would work well in. Just dunno' about the looks of it (shrug). Maybe use a Summit radiator overflow instead?
  9. Umm, the TEC TPS, if it's a standard TPS, is 0-5volts. Most sensors are that range actually. What he said, using the FJO logging, sounds right to me. As for the AEM, no race unit yet and the learning curve on it is as steep as any other. This sucker is CAPABLE which means learning. You'll do fine with the TEC once it's all setup and you've learned it IMO. You already own it, might as well put it to good use
  10. Haven't priced it yet but when my garage is done I want to coat it too. Am looking here -> http://www.ucoatit.com/ to see if it's cost effective. Warning, noisy site
  11. I covered my cage in SFI approved padding. It won't beat a helmet but it sure beats smacking bare tubing! One thing I wish I'd done though - metal plate welded to the trans tunnel to protect against a flywheel letting go. I DO have an SFI flywheel though!
  12. Ya' Pete - really sad too inthat he was released immediatly since the jail was FULL!
  13. http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=93261&perpage=25&pagenumber=1 Talk about screwed up!
  14. Generally you don't want the JDM 2JZGTEs, ceramic turbines and smaller injectors along with other changes. The 1JZGTE is a neat motor though but most of them are autos It has ceramic turbines too What I'd like is a front clip with a 1JZ sporting a 5speed. And a 2JZGTE 6speed to go with it
  15. NX system? Well, back to back runs on a ProCharged Mustang resulted in NO difference in power. Mind you they didn't use the actual NX kit they simply took a nearly empty Nitrous bottle and hosed the intercooler down till it was icy. Power differences in that car were negligable and the owner of the car decided that purchasing the NX kit would be a waste of money. YMMV!
  16. Keep us posted, I'm really interested to hear how it goes. The new Holley intake also looks interesting but height is apparently an issue. I'm hoping to use a converted carb intake if the guy would ever get aroound to converting it
  17. Wait a sec, you've got an Electromotive ECU and are having to use the FJO to datalog?! Shouldn't the TEC software handle all that including the W/B input? If not I'd be REAL unhappy if I were you. Having to look at logs from multiple places would drive me batty...
  18. You need data logging of th esignal coming from the knock sensors. Even if it's just a tape recorder using them as a microphone! On my Supra I can see knock sensor voltage in the .07 range and then suddenly see it spike to .3volts. THAT is knock and usually I cannot hear it by ear. A hundred RPM later the engine is back to .07 volts again. A/F when this occurs can be as rich as 11:1! The AEM tech said that they have a better time burying knock with fuel than they do spark retard on the Supra BTW - not sure if that applies to you. Anyway, if you can datalog that bad boy somehow you'll know exactly what's going on. Hell, I'm swimming in data with my ECU, it's freakin' awesome! Stupid question - is th eRB motor a 6 or a 4cylinder motor?
  19. There's an Aussie automotive site with terrific info, much of it requiring a subscription, that did some terrific testing of this. That article isn't a subscriber page if I could just remember the danged name of the site Someone help me out - they also did an AWESOME series on manual boost controllers.... You'll find that the sprayer doesn't work quite like you expect it too BTW. The intercooler is as much heatsink as it is air radiator....
  20. No, I've not gotten back under the hood lately. No time I'm afraid A shame you're not closer! Have them send them unfinished with NO collector welded on. Get them test fitted on both sides, mark how you want the collector done, and tell them to weld it STRAIGHT and not angled in I think it will work!
  21. On my 240 I simply removed the hood bumpers in the back and replaced them with Sparco hood pins. No removal of bodywork neccessary!
  22. Call Chris at Exscessive. He not only has piles of parts for sale but he wrenches on them all day long. Hope those weren't Barry's heads as they've already been hogged out pretty good and performed exactly as Chris said they would on his stroker motor Putting metal back in is a little harder than taking it out. The GT-40 aluminum heads also had thin decks according to Chris, has any machine work been done on them other than the O-rings? Be careful, Chris has had some bad ones right out of the box although if there are used that shouldn't be an issue I hope. Beware the B303, it won't idle well at all on some cars. What you pick for naturally aspirated may suck for the blower so keep that in mind too, the stock cam isn't all that bad. Chris is also the Pro-charger dealer in this area. He may have a used unit or two kicking around and can get them rebuilt when needed. Watch the compression if you go blown - you've got hyperpathetic pistons in that motor too and they won't like detonation at all. Don't forget fuel, you may already be starting to run lean by the time you get a cam and everything else in there. Injectors are cheap, don't use the "nice" chrome intake tube that some sell as a cold air kit - it picks up heat big time. You'll need a MAF to go with injectors unless you get it chipped, adding a "calibrated" MAF for a set of injectors will screw with your timing tables BTW. Have you done gears yet? If not get them done soon! That will make a HUGE difference and with the parts you're putting on you've moved your power band upwards anyway. Heh, could go on all night long but there's lots of stuff for th eMustang. P.S. Chris sells some REALLY nice billet parts for the Mustang interior. A/C knobs, buttons, the works.
  23. No datalogging but for those of you looking for a W/B -> http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=521489&t=5617#post521489
  24. Believe it or not this is actually turning out well. I had sent a firm note to the guy last time aorund letting him know that $50 sucked in that I'd have ended up paying more for 2 pumps through him than having bought them through my friend. His response was that he's been selling in the Supra community for years and that he'd like to believe everyone there is honest, he's refunding me my money for the single pump. It gets better, turns out that he runs an online shop for Supra parts and that it's one that sells some unique items that I've been meaning to purchase! So, instead of accepting the money I'm going to have him ship me the items I want and I'm paying him the difference. He seems like a pretty honest guy. I'm still really puzzled over the fuel pump. Tweaking on the hose attached to the one I've got that's good it's SOLID. The box it arrived in is undamaged comepletely and it was packed well. It's a mystery as to what occured but I think that we've come to an agreement that's okay for the both of us. Yeah, I'm a really trusting guy. I've bought a ton of stuff over the 'net - including a Supra intake today! Bought an HKS BOV the other day too when an E-Bay auction fell through, saved quite a bit on that one actually.
  25. I favor the Supra pic, I think it rox The ZXTT lites didn't do it for me, the 1st one also wasn't too bad. The Supra lites can be gotten as low as $75 a pair (used) I think, the later 97-98 ones new are fairly expensive last I saw them posted.
