Locutus (sp?) it DOES get a picture of the driver There's a light less than a block from my office that has this. I've never gotten a ticket there but people I've spoken to who have get a full portrait. Maybe flip the visor down? The polarized covers for your license tag is th ebest defense IMO - that and no front tag. That's not legal here, neither are the covers actually, but I've run my last couple of cars sans front tag with only occasionaly grief and NO tickets. I guess the best solution is to not run them in the first place. And Pete's right - jurisdictions have been caught shortening lights, not cool!

Some folks here have had R200 LSD rears for sale in the past so post a wanted ad. I'd also suggest posting over on the ZCar.com site. The R160 supposedly works but hell folks break 180s so I'm NOT sure a 160 will hold the power. An R230 might be an option but probbaly too expensive and heavy for your app (shrug). Who's got a spare LSD rear guys?

I've got an aluminum cell that has popped two pinhole leaks for reasons unknown but none since. I feel that aluminum cells are just fine but that cells like the one Mikelly has that are enclosed in a steel safe are... safer! If you decide to have one built consider enclosing it in steel too. I worry that a rear-end accident would push my cell into my R200 brace and puncture it - not cool. Protecting that sucker is of great importance and foam would be a good idea - maybe a bladder too. (okay, I'm paranoid)

ROTFL! You're the guy on the TechEdge mailing list I replied to?! Ha! That funny Okay, I have to ask here because on the worlkdwide list it would be embarrassing... which damned transistor is the right one in step one? It's been 12years since I did this in tech school but I swear only one of those little suckers looks like it's setup for power switching and it's NOT the one they're calling for... "U4 the 78L08 regulator note - U4's silk screened outline is rotated 180° to its corrrect orientation" <-- which blasted bugger is that? I feel so stupid but none of the transistors I've got in any of my kits have numbers that match that. I'm half ready to turn this project over to a friend who's doing this kind of thing everyday but that just seems too easy. A set of Heathkit style instructions would've been nice TIA!

I'm running an electronic speedo - from autometer. It's only as accurate as your setting is. In my case I used a GPS to accuratly pace off th edistance required for setting it up. However I noticed while doing this that it displayed pulse counts so if you knew the number of pulses for your gear ratio and tire height you could use that on say a jackstand. Subsequent checking has found that it's within 1MPH from my GPS - damned accurate!

Check these guys out ofr oddball fittings and braided hose by the foot -> http://www.amstreetrod.com/ I needed some whacky AN fittings fo rmy Supra that had a Metric end - these guys had them. Better yet, their prices on ends were lower than Jegs! They charge shipping though however Jegs didn't carry the oddball stuff so since I was ordering there anyway... I picked up a few things I needed Like to have lot's of options when shopping for parts and this place has been added to my short list...

Running an LSD R200 righ tnow. Am going to CVs in th eNEAR future. I may move to an R230 just because it'll be a viscous LSD and not as hard to get my hands on. The parts to adapt it to the car on the other hand are what will be rare (sigh). Hopefully the CVs will cure my breakage issues, if not then th eR230 will be pursued much sooner!

Yup, it's true the companies don't sell these devices, they lease them in such a way as to get a portion of the income from them. I believe that is WRONG. Just as I believe it's WRONG for insurance companies like GEICO to GIVE radar guns to various police forces There's a light in D.C. that was higlighted once. It was a flashing yellow 3 way. On one side of the intersection was a parking garage. As cars came up the ramp to get into the mainstream of traffic the flashing yellow would go RED to let them in. The placed a redlight camera at this intersection and were racking up THOUSANDS of dollars a day in fines! It was eventually caught and much money refunded but NOT all of it. Think about that traffic situation and you'll see why this was crap - there was NO way for the oncoming driver to know if the light was going to turn red or just flash to yellow again.... Still, setup correctly I'm starting to believe that redlight cameras might be of SOME worth. Either that or police actually need to start enforcing this - I've seen redlights run with police sitting at the intersection as the first car - no pursuit of the offender. Hrm, some studies of places where cameras have been put in place have found that yellow are short - even in cases where traffic engineers recommended longer yellows. Gee, no revenue incentive there is there? Photoradar on the other hand is just plain wrong. These too get the % kickback to the manufacturer. Set that puppy within a few miles of the speed limit on a straight road and rack up the tickets! In some countries where these are often seen citizens have begun burning, shooting, and vandalizing the ameras. Think the local Govt. is getting the message? IMO this is the perfect example as to when civil disobedience should be excercised
-
YES! I'm going to be down in Cocoa late next month - let's hook up! I cannot wait to see a 10sec timeslip out of that puppy. When do you think you'll hit the track? Mentioned to a few folks here that you were running 11.1's shifting into OD at th e1/8th mark and that a rear change would put you into the 10s. These guys DOUBTED me, I'm going to roll laughing when you do it! I cannot imagine anything holding you back from a 10 except maybe sand in the fuel filter Hrm, got something for that Supra now maybe? Shoot some video, this is going to be awesome!

Pretty much what Davy said. However I'll add a few things baout the T56. 1st is pretty low and with say a 3.7 found in the 300ZX LSD 1st goes by fairly quickly. On the other end on the highway 6th is pretty steep and you've got to have a motor that can be pulled down pretty low or be willing to drive 80mph Going to a lower gear makes 6th more usable but 1st less usable. The 93 T56 which had a different 6th MIGHT be better for this app but it also had a lower torque rating In a car as light as the Z the T56 is pretty much bulletproof. The T5 would probably live better than in a heavier application too and it's certainly a lightercheaper trans. I like my T56 but it's a rarer trans, more expensive, and a heavy brute. They also DO have "issues" from time to time so it IS possible to hurt one...

I'm pretty dead set against photo radar. Around here they have signs that say "Aggressive driver imaging in effect". This makes it sound like they're going after the guys weaving in and out of traffic doesn't it? Nope - its photo radar except they know if they simply said this that people would riot. To call it Aggressive driver imaging puts a spin on it such that anyone bitching is obviously going against the public's good. Grr! As fo rred light cameras - I used to also be dead set against those. However more an dmore I've noticed people blowing through red lights! I used to think it was just here too until I spent a bit of time out of town. WTF is wrong with people? I see folks blowing red lights all the time and I know of at least one where during rush hour you can see as many as TEN cars go through the red light. It's crazy! I'm actually beginning to support these things simply because people appear to be too stupid to understand basic rules of the road and respect the drivers around them. Apparently it's going to take having cameras on the red lights to get people to drive correctly. How sad is that?!

60HP? On WHAT engine?! That's not right. My friend's shop has dynoed both long tubeshortys on Mustangs - guess what, almost no difference! A few HP at most on cars making a bit over 300RWHP. If it was a 60HP loss then that motor must have been a monster! Don't always believe the magazines either - they prostitute themselves to the people buying ads like you wouldn't believe. Some other interesting dyno testing: Long tube vs short tube on a DOHC Cobra. Difference? 6RWHP Cost? Over a grand installed! Was this a Honda part?! Xpipe vs H pipe. NO DIFFERENCE! Yup, sounds different but they saw no discernable difference. Torque is supposed to be enhanced, they didn't see it on the dyno. Hi-flow cats vs striaght through H-pipe. About 6RWHP. That was a back to back test too. Since they installed the dyno they've been having fun finding out hwat really works and what doesn't. It's amazing that some of the things that are gospel just don't seem to hold up in real life. Hrm, is the S&S main product line long tube or shorties?

R230 Identification Question
BLKMGK replied to Mike Mileski's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I'm not sure a viscous LSD can be checked that easily - it doesn't act like a clutch LSD. On th eother hand - if it's an R230 I believe it'll be LSD no matter what. All of th elate Zs has LSD even the NA units. Gear ratios varied but th eLSD was there if I've been told correctly... -
The stabilizer might help but the 5th gear is still way out on the back of the trans and weaker than the rest. And yeah, I'd NEVER make it to 150 in the Z myself. 100+ I've hit once on a dark road but it was an accident I swear. 150 would be scary for sure.
-
Gears don't blow generally - it's usually something else that goes first. There are pins in the rear, Ujoints, and some other weak points but for the most part the gears in th erear are fine so long as you've upgraded ot an R200.
-
Heh, not enough mods - at least one Lightning around here is in th emid 12s easy. That's with nothing but bolt-ons so far Those big heavy brute can sure move!
-
Look through some of th eFord T5 sites - there are shops that can give you most any ratio you want. As for attaining that speed - no way. That 5th gear will blow LONG before you get there. 5th is weak in the T5 and WOT shouldn't be used in 5th nor should you powershift 5th. Ford guys found this out long ago (sigh).
-
R230 MAY fit - that swap is being worked on. 9inch gears will NOT swap in. What's your goalpoint here? What ratio are you trying to get and why?
-
how much have you spent on the conversion?
BLKMGK replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I've not added my prices up but it's pretty steep - I went whole hog! It sounds liek you'[ve got parts that could be applicable more to a turbo swap though. Turbo motors can make decent ppower and can be had cheaply from the junkyards too. Blow one up, go grab another You might find that to be the most economical way to go and learn lot's too. -

SIGh k time to find somehting that will live under the beast
BLKMGK replied to a topic in Drivetrain
Perhaps a Supra TT rear would work? Scottie looked at one and liked what he saw but the cost and availability is a real issue. Not many Supras around and when they get wrecked they're still worth a ton! -
That bottom elbow won't bolt to a 4barrel flange?! Whew, glad I didn't order one! Have you considered making one? The fabricator doing my intake conversion is supposed to make me a conversion elbow but for a Ford TB. A GM TB shouldn't be too much different should it? Is the Accel elbow simply too expensive or made from unobtanium? I seem to recall it was pricey but then all of the GM TBs, MAFs, and intakes for EFI seem to be awful expensive Thankfully I'm not strapped to a GM TB

8.8IRS in DOHC Cobras fail often - with slicks even more often! Can you say broken carriers? And broken CV shafts too (sigh). Anyone building a serious DOHC Cobra these days ends up with Raxles halfshafts and then if they go further a full-on 8.8! The older SuperCoupe rears might be worth looking at but I wouldn't bet on it. Dunno' what the solution to a 9sec IRS is going to be... -
Fox Mustang wheels aaaaaallmost fit...
BLKMGK replied to QWKDTSN's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Go 5lug, ten tons of those mustang styled wheels will fit! I did this and the wheel selection is MUCH better! -
Nooooo! http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/wbo2/default.htm Can you say WB for under $300? I've got 4 PCBs, 4 parts kits, and 2 display kits on order. Total so far is just under $200. However the WB UEGO sensor is $117 EACH. considering that Motec sells this type of setup for something like $900 and the sensor I'm quoting for something like $300 that's a deal! Grumpy, you ought to build one of these if you've not already got one. Talk about sweet! BTW, I'm on an AEM group buy list that's trying to get a pre-built heater controller setup (FJO?) for around $300 if soldering isn't your cup of tea. I don't yet have any of my kits built or even here yet but will report back ASAP when they show up. The Autometer setups using the OEM O2 that is most sensitive at 14.7:1 stoich aren't too good IMO. P.S. Yes, the WB UEGO is what you want - it's accurate over a MUCH wider range of A/F. The O2 that the box above uses comes out of a Honda of all things! Since RX7 tend to want to run rich I think a regular O2 won't work all that well for you.
