Mazda Power Steering Rack Possibilities?
BLKMGK replied to DavyZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Hrm, a shame that I can hardly see the damned thing in my RX7 The 3rd gen were made from 93-95 for this country BTW. Pics would really help us figure this out IMO, some measurements too. Wow, I think I'd LOVE P/S too but never thought it could happen without tons of fabrication. Kewl! -
Fuzzy logic is a good idea. for instance if you've got a turbo setup that spikes, like my RX7 , you can have it learn this behaviour and when it sees the boost climbing quickly it will begin opening the wastegate sooner (assuming the spring will let it) to counteract the spike and diminish it. Same thing with slow boost, normally a wastegate will begin opening BEFORE max boost is reached - it's a dumb device after all. So, with the electronic controller it will hold the wastegate closed by not allowing it to see ANY boost until the preset boost level is nearly reached, then it allows boost through to begin opening the wastegate. Scramble boost... Suppose your car can handle 20lbs of boost but breaks the tires loose in lower gears. Or suppose you can run that boost but don't normally want to do it. set the "normal" boost level to say 15lbs and the scamble to 20. As you get into higher gears and find the car next to you beginning to pull ahead you hit the scramble button on the steering wheel and like NOS you pull ahead as there's a controlled "spike" of boost. Manual controllers can do NONE of those things. Manual controllers CAN bump max boost but they cannot do any of the advanced features. For that matter - some electronic controllers can raise boost level for particular RPM levels if you have traction issues. Low boost until a certain RPM and then ramp it up as the revs climb in order to retain traction. How would you do that with a manual valve? In short - there are advantages to the electronic units but most folks simply don't need them. (shrug) I wanted it on the twin turbo V8 but I never got full benefit from it as the car was never tuned as well as it should've been (sigh).

VERY nice Scottie - those wheels work VERY well I think. What will you do for the fronts now? Can you get something to match? Hrmph, if CVs don't fix my problem I'm going to be mighty tempted! Can't wait to see some new ETs on those puppies. I'm betting it really flies. Keep us posted, you should be proud of all that hard work!

Hrm, and while calibrating it will give you a pulse count so if you've got the number of pulses per mile for your drivetrain you can get it exact. In my case I simply whipped out the handy GPS and drove until I hit the one mile mark on the trip meter. Comparing the GPS speed to my gauge afterwards it's exact

What's one of these worth? Anyone measured to see if it'll fit? I may try this weekend just out of curiousity. Could be a way cool blower intercooler maybe.. P.S. That's the Ford Powerstroke intercooler BTW [ November 06, 2001: Message edited by: BLKMGK ]

Okay, got the headers back from Rewarder, still not pulled pics from camera - I apologize Ross! Will be trying to install them this weekend, I hope the flanges line up well enough that my existing exhaust doesn't need to be modified. The coating looks good, I'm glad I ported them before having them coated! I'll have to consider having the intake and other parts coated too I'll let everyone know how they fit. The Sanderson's had a better port match but they hit in too many places on my car...

Soda - follow his link. Is that the SAME valve? Company name is th esame... 120db?! Holy smokes, I'd go nuts! Supposedly the whistles can be taken out or the valves modified if you open them up. No way would I stand for that loud a BOV...

Yeah, I've got an "opinion" I bought one of these puppies years ago and it was pretty expensive. After using it for about 6months the solenoid under the hood DIED! I've still got the box (somewhere) and the dead solenoid but I was none too thrilled about the money I ended up flushing. IF you can get it cheaply enough then go for it but if they want a pile of cash then consider what it might cost to fix. I was pretty disgusted with mine and the motor was being pulled anyway for a supercharged rather than turbo motor so I never pursued a repair. Find out what sort of support you'd get from HKS before jumping in too deeply. Lot's of other companies making similiar boxes now

That's exactly what he means. How big is the file you wish to post? Several of us run servers and can host pics for others - including myself. I've no done much on my server lately, badly needs an update! but if you've got a pic you want posted and it's not HUGE then shoot it my way. I can shrink it down some too for ya' if needed

Yeah, I've got it and it works. As I recall here are TWO wires from the VSS sensor and only one on the speedo'. I picked one wire at random form the VSS and hooked it to he speedo' and the other I simply grounded. So far as I know there is no particular way it must be hooked up but it's possible I've gotten lucky. How have you hooked it up now?

Found another good resource - EFI Chevy intakes
BLKMGK replied to BLKMGK's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Thank you Grumpy! Posted this thread and some of the other URLs over on TurboBuick.com for another guy who's also trying to figure out what works best for his app. Nice to have you over here, welcome! -
Sweet, I REALLY appreciate you getting that number for me. Hrm, Mercedes sell online anywhere? $3 apiece is fine by me for a part that works well. Pete, I've got a line on an SX pumpfilter for $225 including shipping. It's got some time on it and I've got a pump on the way already. I'm VERY tempted to buy it anyway though as the filter is $70 new and I can use the pump or not if I choose. Will give the guy an answer tomorrow I think, this is a decent deal IMO. He's had nibbles but no bites on the parts, not a screaming deal but.... Oh, brand new regulator on the way for $100, still hunting a TB!

For those of you interested in the FASTSpeedPro system I've been told where I can download the demo version of the Windows software -> http://www.fuelairspark.com/downloads/software/ I've got the DOS software too but haven't looked at it. It comes with some demo maps (Scottie, one of them is a 3bar GN) and some demo datalogs. One of the REALLY cool things it will do when going through the data logs is "target". What that means is it will show you on the various maps what cell it was using at any particular point in the data logs! Talk about SWEEET! I'd have killed for this with my old DFI system as it makes figuring out where there are "issues" much easier. I used to have to drive along and hit a key to freeze the computer whenever I'd feel a driveability hiccup - this is MUCH better IMO. On the flip side - WOW there are a TON of parameters Anyone seen demo software for Holly? I know DFI software exists but have yet to track it down - soon. I think the Holly manual is superior to what I've seen for FAST so far. I've not seen the DFI manual either...

I would love to come across another P1200, I'm not quite sold on th enew oiless ones but I guess if I found one I'd consider it. The newer ones seem to sort of hang out further to the side than the older ones did - they have to cut sheetmetal sometimes where they didn't used to have to. Price? Good question! I'd check any price I found with the guys over at the shop who know what they go for new. The P600 and P1200 are out of production now but they would still have some idea. Supposedly the carb setup is the easiest one to setup for our purposes but custom brackets are a serious option Why, you know someone who's got one? I'm also wondering about the NOVI superchargers but I've got very little in the way of data on those. I'll intercool whatever I find though. Wonder if an older S trim or T trim Vortech would be worth looking at? Those are pretty common but I don't know what sort of CFM they can move...

Not sure htis site has ever been mentioned but I know how some of you guys like to do the math figuring out performance, cams, etc. etc. so thouht I'd point out this site I just stumbled across -> http://www.performancetrends.com/ Not free software unfortunatly but perhaps of use?

Nah, it's just a big heavy slow slug V8 right? I had hoped my car would be quieter, and it will be, but so far only a motorcycle has raced me. He lost! Most folks figure out it's not stock and back off, it's a real bummer. Soon as my headers come back I'm quieting it down a bunch....
-
You guys have NO idea how tempted I am to find an ATI head unit for my car and grab an NPR intercooler. I've beenkeeping an eye out but so far I've not yet seen one cheaply enough. EFI first, blower possibly second. Talk about a wild ride! What did Darius do for halfshafts? CVs? He's posted here a few times but is pretty elusive, would love to know mucho' details about his car...
-
Comes with ECU? I think I'd be tempted to hook up with the LT1-Edit folks for their LS1 editing software and use th estock ECU. I'm not sure how that ECU does with boost but I'll bet someone is running a blower on one save yoursel some cash over the SDS perhaps?
-
I used Loctite on mine after having the rear of the shaft drop out and leave me stranded. If I weren't about to goto CVs in the next couple of months I'd have done the same to the halfshaft bolts. I use the red which requires heating to soften but I think blue doesn't require this? I don't mind needing to heat them

The OEM T56 bellhousing from a 93-97(?) T56 install is what you want. I don't think there are any other GM housings out there. Make sure you've not got an LS1 trans too - those 56 are "different". I'm pretty sure the LT1 bellhousing will fit a 40 just fine. You'll likely need a Centerforce flywheel though. Figure $250 for it (shiver). Clearance for the clutch arm is no biggie - the motor will be offset to the passenger side if you do the JTR setback anyway. The only cuttingbanging on my 240 was to remove the stock trans mounts and to ding the firewall a touch. The rest fit fine with just a little bumping for the reverse switch The 280 chassis may even have a wider tunnel...
-
Hrm, VERY interesting reading guys. I'm considering this for a set of 280 stubs myself. This breakage thing stinks! Now I don't know what to do but if it were only $30 I'd certainly do it. Hrm, heat AND freeze maybe?
-
Since I end up custom making all of my wires I'm considering just buying the stuff in bulk spools Seriously, it seems like it might be a good cost saving idea over time...
-
I've got a used Greddy on the RX7, it's vented to air but fairly quiet IMO. Head over to http://www.thepartstrader.com and hunt around in the turbo car areas for a used one. Oh, chatting with a guy that worked on RX7 all the time we got to talking about BOVs. You know how they make them loud? They stick whistles in the damned things! Seems really silly but they worry more about noise than pressure release I'd think the whistle would get old after awhile...

Guy I know who went to SEMA has gotten back to me. He's got the DFI demo software for me which I hope to be able to share. He's also got answers from several vendors on a TON of questions I gave him to ask. Unfortunatly he didn't speak to Electromtive, he figured since they were so close that he didn't need to (sigh). I'm trying to get the FAST software too so I can compare them but so far I've only been able to find the DOS stuff.... Hr DID send me a REALLY cool picture of a new device NOS came out with. It's a nitrous injection system that sits UNDER the fuel injector. Raises the injector up a bit but it allows for direct port injection of nitrous. Has both nitrous and fuel hookups. I've got pics but they're HUGE - I'll shrink them and post them when I've got a free moment. Looks cool but I wonder if moving the injector upwards will hose things. I'll ask the Holley guy I've been chatting with - NOS is owned by Holley now....

Mike, where did you hear Wideband would be out in 02? The guy I'm talking to is an engineer for Holly and he's told me it may or may NOT come out. There are some "betas" out there apparently so it looks good but I'll want it for initial tuning. The Commander IS a good unit but in my case I think I've got some requirements it might not meet. I'm actually wondering if the FAST system would work out well on the Mustang. Selling off parts? Oh heck yes! Carb, intake, fuel pump, regulator, I've got a water pump, starter, and I'll look for other stuff too. Just haven't had time to list it up on E-Bay yet. Bummer that I've NOT found a good Chevy sales site like I have for the Ford stuff Anyone found such a place? I hope to recoup a couple hundred and then some
