Do we have any college freshman here? I have a survey...
thrustnut replied to rturbo 930's topic in Non Tech Board
How about a freshman that graduated from high school 13 years ago? -
Ever heard of an engine siezing up like this?

I don't think the tach or cable are the problem, so why change them? Is your Dad marking up prices on parts he's selling you? I hope not -
Who else is burned out on NASCAR and how to Fix?
thrustnut replied to SHO-Z's topic in Non Tech Board
Smaller teams, spending caps, maybe a sponsor cap. It would be cool to see more owner/driver teams have a chance. I love Nascar, but agree that the big teams with the big cash and big sponsors winning all the time is getting old. It would also be cool to see more road corses . While I'm sure that driving in a circle at 180 MPH with 40 other cars for 4 hours is a challenge, I think the real separation between an excellent driver and a good driver is proven in a place like Sonoma. -

I had a problem like this with a Bronco. I had the tranny rebuilt and after re-attaching it to the engine and keying the starter...nothing. I tryed to turn it over by hand and no go, so I unbolted the bell housing bolts and the torque converter bolts and lifted the tailshaft aligning it as best i could and actually herd somthing pop, slid the tranny back in, tightened it down and everything worked perfect. I don't know what made the pop noise, but somthing was misaligned enough to keep the engine from turning over. I also had a similar problem with the Z, the engine was hanging up on one of the ring gear bolts that was too long. I agree with pulling the tranny off and spining it through by hand, then re-installing it. Take it one step at a time, there's not that much going on back there, shoulden't be that hard to find. Good Luck! -
I'm with them, a 6'X6' chunk of carbon isn't enough to do much with. Maby cover an interior piece with a single layer for looks, but thats about it. When I worked building exparamental aircraft I had boxes of scrap CF at my disposal. I made some pretty cool motorcycle parts.

I need a left rear chassis side brake line for a 280Z. It's the one that runs from under the car out to the left rear wheel well and screws into the rubber brake line. It is going on a 77 280, not sure of the interchangeablitiy. Thanks

I soaked both of my pins for 3 days (by soaking I mean spray down completely 4 or 5 times a day) with Kroil, one came out no prob with a spindle pin puller, the other no such luck. I'm gonna pull the whole assy. out this weekend and bring it into work, cut the lower a-arm off and try to press the old pin out with a 10 ton press. I plan on trimming down my old spindle pin from the other side and using it to push. Congrats on finishing up, all this for stupid poly bushings. By far the worst job yet on the Z.

Where are you located and what year are they from?

I have my own rule of splitting lanes. In traffic, only do it when vehicles are completely stopped and even then do no more then 15mph. When passing to cars, make sure they don't know you are there and make sure there is nothing immediately in the road, that would cause them to swerve. I have fallowed those two rules and they have served me well. That works until someone in stopped traffic decides they want the next exit and start changing lanes in front of you. If you bounce off a car even at 15 MPH your in for a bad day, not to mention it would be your fault. Don't get me wrong, I love to ride and don't think I would give it up for anything. I'm just lucky enough to live in a city with the population in the 80,000's where traffic is never stopped (unless you go through downtown at mid-day).

I don't know how safe the crotch rocket thing is in Cali. I don't know if it's legal there, but in the week and a half I was there I must have been passed by 10 bikes line riding in HEAVY traffic. As a rider, I think that's about the dumbest thing you can do. I agree that there are WAY to many gizmos in new cars. I rented a 2010 Buick Enclave (Sp?) for the trip and that thing had so many displays it was ridiculous. You had no road feel, the ride and steering where so smooth it was crazy. I think riding a bike on the highways in So. Cal is a good way to knock 20 or so years off your life.

VDO's are pretty standard in aircraft as well

That's it BPT, thanks!

I just got back from a vacation with the family down to So. Cal. I will agree that the worst drivers in America are there. I grew up in Redondo Beach, but don't remember the traffic being quite so bad. You leave just enough room between you and the car in front of you for another car, and someone will cut you off. The weird thing is they cut you off for no reason, they don't get any further ahead. I think the biggest problem is that people drive at all different speeds all over the freeway. You can be in the fast lane and get stuck behind someone doing 50 mph. then merge into the middle lane and have people want to do 80 mph. If people stayed in lanes based on how fast they want to go, traffic would be allot better down there.

There are other threads on how the stock gauges suck, they are more of a reference then a reading. When I first finished my engine I had NO oil pressure indication, I guess then sending unit crapped out sitting in a bag for a year. My readings now are pretty high when the oil is cold, which is understandable with a freshly rebuilt engine and cold oil, then drops down to around your position when the oil is warm. Also know that the thread pitch for the sending unit is different (I can't remember offhand what it is)but do a search before you try to screw something else in there. As far as compatibility of electronic gauges, if you know the ohm scale of the stock sending unit, you should be able to find a gauge to match.

It's not there fault that they don't know when the parts will come in. In that case they are relying on Nissan Comp. to get the parts to them, which would be an uncontrollable variable for them. It's kind of like when I ordered the lash pads for my cam, they guy at MSA was helpful and got them out ASAP, I think I got them like three days later. The problem was they where covered in surface rust, not that big a problem with the equipment we have at work to take care of it. I called and complained, and they said there is nothing they could do about it, they receive them in large boxes from Nissan Comp. that have been sitting around for who knows how long. Some things you can't control. BTW the MSA order I placed last Sunday came in on Friday. Still a pretty good turn around.

Careful man... you might want to take a look at some of the members youtube videos before you say something like that. I watched a video of one the other night that was in the 7's in the 1/4 mile. Good luck with that...

Good point globerunner... I don't think that part of the runway ever helped anyone. In refrence to your decision not to go, good call. What I like is our charter pilots who come back with problems, so you tell them to write them up so yu can ground the aircraft and dig in and they say "Well I don't want to do that if I'm gonna miss a flight." It's a fine line between safety and buisness.

I think what gives me the biggest scare as a mechanic is how allot of the pilots in our training program (both trainees and instructors) like to just hop in the plane and go. No preflight, not even kick the tires. We had an instructor run his airplane out of fuel in the pattern last summer (our chief pilot) with a kid in the pilots seat. When he came back he blamed it on the indicator, we did three tests on the indicating system, with no defects. Later on it was overheard that he wanted a fuel load (he took off with about 1/4 tank in a DA-20) but was told by the line it would be a little while, and he didn't want to wait. I think if you want to make a go of the piloting thing, it might not be good to mess around right off the bat, show that you are competent first. Aircraft and flight line environment are not the best place for a newbee to fart around... good way to get yourself dead. The three most useless things in aviation... 1. Fuel on the ground 2. Airspeed you don't have 3. Altitude above you

Do you mean Motor Sport? I just ordered some stuff from them last week and did not get any type of conformation that my part was shipped, I did get my order conformation and it said that you would not be able to track the item after it's shipped. I placed my order on Sunday and am hoping to get the parts before next weekend. In the past I have had problems getting them to respond to email, I also find the best way to get them is to call. They are pretty busy, but have been around long enough and I have ordered enough stuff from them that even without a response I'm pretty sure all is well.

Got to meet him down in So. Cal when I picked up my header. Nice part, cool guy. Thanks for going out of your way to make a sale!
-
I think it would increase wear on everything, more parts to break, ect. I'm sure it's been tried somewhere. I think it falls into the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" category.

You should take a look at that motorcycle engine video that was posted on here a while back to get an idea of how much the valve and springs rotate at high engine RPM's. I would think an automotive valve would rotate less because it's not turning 14,000 RPM, but I'm sure there is still rotation.
-
Not my thing, but pretty cool all the same. The detail is pretty amazing. It would look good good on a motorcycle or something.

First off, where did his cloths go? He climbed under the blankets and took his cloths off? Second, I have a pre-teen daughter and have seen my share of freak outs... nothing like this.... those of you with kids (I would think girls more then boys, but after that vid. maybe not) around the teenage years know it doesn't take much to set them off. I told her the other day she couldn't have a vampire book at the library and just about ruined her life.

Where can I get a shirt like that? Something about a stone cold sober dude ranting about the "Great white Buffalo" that's just a little unsettling... I love it
