  1. Vintage car enthusiast have motors sitting for years by pulling the plugs, squirting oil down the bores and turning over by hand every few months. A motor left without any attention will slowly get surface rust in the bores, if the coolant doesn't have corrosion inhibitors the block rusts and used oil seals will go hard. But if the price is right to cover the cost of replacing the odd seal and it is not being considered for a long term replacement engine go for it. If it comes complete with fuel system allow for replacement components here also. Neil
  2. Any reason for repost? Standard 6in X 14in alloy wheels on 80 280ZX have 10mm offset. Neil
  3. Ive read a discussion on this recently on a 240SX site or freshalloy so google both then use their search functions it was a good discussion. The 510 guys use a lot of these type diffs also. Neil Edit Damn!!!!!!!!! went back through history and cant find that discussion anywhere so disregard the above for now.
  4. Ztard The parts info for Z32DETT does not support the argument that there is any other ratio than 3.692 in the R230V. There is only one part No per side listed for the slide in flanges (stubs) therefore there are only 6 bolt Flanges and no 5 bolt flanges. R200-R230 designates the size of the ring gear and not the various housings designs that they are used in. Maybe another form of identification can be the width across the flanges, on my 200SX S13 R200V with the 3x2 flanges and 5 bolt flanges is 315mm or 12.4in Hopefully someone can chip in with the dimensions of R230V. Neil
  5. Hey Dubz If you pulled the plugs "out" and it made no difference to idle quality I would say that is idicative of gasket problem, compression test before chasing an injector problem. Neil
  6. CasperIV No engine swap is straight forward or quick, I would research the VG30DETT swap on the various 300ZX sites as one of them has a full list of whats involved and you really need a smashed TT to get it all. Someone has done a chev V8 swap, so use the search to track it down. I agree with phantom a mildly worked NA motor would be the easiest and cheapest. Neil
  7. The Infinity guys are running into the same problems trying to swap diffs around to get different ratios. All Q45s use 6 bolt axles but according to the FSM the 3.538 ratio in 90-96 is in fact R200v and the internal side gears are splined to take the 6 bolt stubs. As the Infinity guys trying to use Z32NA 4.083 R200V have found when they tried to use their existing axle stubs. Only the 3.692 97-01 Q45 appears to be R230V, 02 Q45 onwards uses a 3.133 R230 open (non LS). The 3.538 ratio has continued in Z33. Neil Edit Z33 uses 5 bolt axles.
  8. How far does one go, The first conversion on Z31 seats into 280ZX was just to weld tabs onto the inboard mounts to narrow the mounting and put 1/2in spacers between the seat base and rail on the outer runner so that the seat wasn't tipped towards the outside. The front runner mounts needed to be bent square and the holes elongated. Take 2 I didn't like the seat rubbing on the sill trim so I stripped both lots of seats and used modified Z31 seat backs on 280ZX seat bases with the seat foam off the Z31s. Which is where I'm at at the moment, but the adjustable side squab mech digs into my ribs, so I was going to get another left Z31 seat for the foam and part of the spring support. ( note Aus is RH drive) To put the trim back on you use fence netting clips and tool, very similar to what trimmers use. Thats my saga . Neil
  9. Hi Howard you could always get the best of both worlds and use the power rack out of an 82-83 ZX if the US car is the same as an AUS spec car. Neil.

    Q45 R230V ?

Hi guys After reviewing last weeks research; The 3.538 ratio Q45 from 90-96 according to the FSM is R200V. All Q45 use the heavier 6 bolt axles even in the R200 as the Stubs are not interchangeable with with J30 or Z32NA. I have found no info to support 5 bolt axles with R230 or a 4.083 ratio in R230. If anyone has any accurate info to the contrary please let us know. Neil

    3.36 rear gears

Ive posted this before and admit I haven't done a price+availability through dealer but the European Z31 had 37/11 3.364, the gear would be 12mm bolts and the P/No is 38100-12S01. Neil

    Q45 R230V ?

Thanks Aaron 4.083 is R200V ratio Z32NA and 240SX, Neil
  13. Ok Anthony hope all this is of some use, The following is for 280ZX Ride Height of 2+2 51.2in Centre of gravity 18.8in Weight distribution 50-50 for 2 seater Rear spring constants 140.6 Lb/in 2S 149.5 lb/in 4S Rear damping at 1ft/sec Exp 187lb 2S 221lb 4S Comp 99lb 2S 121lb 4S Front spring constants 126.6lb/in 2S and 4S Front damping at 1ft/sec Exp 221lb Comp 77lb Good luck Neil

    Q45 R230V ?

Thanks guys, As Infinity models arn't sold in Aus I can only research the info on the net and early model info isn't that detailed. You get a bit concerned when our site is ridiculed for bad info but I'm not too sure that those NICO guys are all that bright to criticise. Any way moving on, J30 ratio's are typical of that era of R200 althuogh the housing design sounds more like the new Z33 which is bigger looking at the Parts Drawing. R230V ratios 3.692 same as Z32TT there was mention of 3.55 on NICO, the new 2004 Pathfinder Armada is listed with R230 ratios of 2.937 and 3.357. The Q45 from 2002-2004 is listed as a 3.133 Open, R230 it didn't say. Edit 3.133 calculates out to be 47/15 and 2.937 47/16 so it is probably R230 So endeth tonights info. Neil

    Q45 R230V ?

After a couple of hours on NICO website it would apear that the R230V-R200V is not so clear. They were saying R230 was only in 1997-2001 with the others being R200 or R200V but they still run 6 bolt flanges so to those that have not seen R230V you could end up buying R200V or have I just totally addled my brain with information overload. Neil
  16. G'day Ross Do you happen to know what model there out of, as 4.06 ratio is not one that I have heard of before and would like to keep my information up to date. Neil
  17. Yeah and if he had run over and killed some innocent person then she would scream diminished responsibility so he didn't go down for murder. If you make the decision to drink then you should also accept responsibility for all that you do there after even when drunk. Yes her son sadly made a mistake for which he paid the ultimate price and no litigation will change that or bring him back. Obviously she has some personal guilt for which she needs someone else to blame, pity it makes the girlfriends loss even worse. Unfortunately people dont like to take responsibility for there actions anymore and thats not just in America. Neil
  18. Ross I would check for confirmation that the 5 bolt 90mm Cv axles actually came from an R230 as they are normally used in R200v in Z32NA and Skyline. They may also be used in another domestic application that we dont have Aus, but to the best of my knowledge 6 bolt 100mm CVs are used for all R230v. Neil
  19. Ooh thats a bit wicked, there's a couple of highly venormous Aussie snakes that look just like that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beats the Redback in my gearstick knob thats for sure. Neil
  20. Hi Patrick Another option for manual trans is the Tremec TKO offerred in a kit by http://www.keislerauto.com. Neil
  21. Hi Doug Picked up my diff parts today, except finned rear cover, according to Aus nissan Z32 NA use a different part No for the drivegear bolt. 38102-10V00 instead of the 12mm 38102-12S00 indicating that Z32NA probably are all 13mm bolts, this No is also applicable to the new Z33- 350Z. The Z33 diff housing has also been revised, appears to be longer behind the axle shaft entry, internals appear similar to previous R200V. Neil

    Would this work?

Hello Plainswolf No they wont! The shaft length dissasembled is 340mm which makes it too short for standard application and too long for R200V customisation. The ones shown are tripod inner with fixed Birfield outer, the V6 ones are 90mm sliding Birfield inner with fixed outer. Been there checked it out and its no show. Neil
  23. Hi Jody Standard 280ZX 14x6 are 10mm offset if you go to 7in width the offset needs to come back to 0mm offset to maintain front steering geometry. Use author search of 80lt1 or check out his website as I know he has done something similar. Neil
  24. Hi Trevor 1- Check the distance from crownwheel mounting face to ends 116mm & 50mm will work with Z gears if 124mm & 42mm it wont. 2- You need the slide in flanges as they are different to Z or VLSD. 3- You have to make custom drive shafts. These conversions are not straight forward as you can see and there are other LSD units that are made specifically for R180-R200 that use the existing driveshafts and are much easier to do or have done. Neil
  25. Hey Maichor Since you put a complete S13 rear suspension in your Z how much shorter are the drive shafts when R230 is fitted. Your drive shaft lengths should be different to what others are doing. Also the type of spline will be different each end as you will still use fixed outer CV whereas others are using same spline and circlip position on both ends. Keep up the good work. Neil
