  1. I'm getting burned out on throwing money at the Z. I has gotten to the point where it starts everytime and drives nicely. But the next step would be to replace differential, suspension, and brakes, and to do bodywork. The problem is that I don't have nearly as much time to work on my car that I need.

I'm tempted to buy a 240sx that has had a RB25DET transplanted into it, the reason I'm looking at this is because it already has everything done that I want to do, Coilovers, brakes, LSD, CVs, R200, and RB.

Right now i'm trying to justify spending the time and money on the Z instead of just getting what I want but in a newer car with the work already done.

The other thing I'm trying to decide if I should sell the Z or keep the Z and put it on the backburner for a couple years. The third possibility is to strip the electronics out and throw them in the 240sx.

  2. How did you mount your crank sensor?

Besides that (without looking at it) I would say to just set the initial timing (probably 20 degrees_ and play around with the magnet position. Its all in the manual.

  3. Would there be any interest in a laptop loaner program similar to the spindle puller loaner program?

I was just given 2 older (pentium, windows 95) laptops by a friend. I used them to set up my WBO2 sensor and now I don't need them anymore. Instead of just throwing them away I would rather pass them on to someone who could use it to tune megasquirt or a tec3 (I have SDS so no use to me)/

Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Who needs them? What sofware should I put on? (no CD drive and no network card means I use a CF card and PCIMCIA adapter)

  4. I have no experience with the AEM WBo2 but I know that the LC-1 output can be programmed to be whatever I want. 0-5V or 0-1V with the fuel ratio corresponding to whatever voltage I want.

I would guess the AEM can do the same thing. Their website says "User-programmable 0-5v analog output included for use with data loggers and virtually any engine management system". If I had the manual I could tell you more.

  5. The Z NEEDS nothing, just time for me to work on it. But with it in Washington and me in Guam it's difficult. I'll just wait a couple years until I move back to the states.

I'm investing $ for retirement every month, 5% of my paycheck right now. TSP is good stuff.

I don't really have any cash saved for emergencies, but I do have killer health insurance, and if anything happens with my parients in washington, the Navy will make sure I can get back to Washington.

I don't own a home, right now I live in converted base housing (3 bachelors living in one house, the govt pays for everything, does maintenance, ect.) I want to buy a house here (rumors of 7000 marines moving from Japan to Guam are making property prices go up), but havn't looked into it much.

With no bills I should be able to put away $1000/month into investments or savings. But I don't know anything about that stuff. I guess I'll have to get onto Scottrade or Etrade.

I think I'm going to drop the $4k on diving. Pay off the 2 loans I have, and put the rest of it away.

  6. I've gome across what to me is a good deal of cash. Probably about $15k. So now my dillema is what to use it for.

If I lived in the states I would just get he work done to my Z, but I live in Guam and the Z is in Seattle. I could get it out here, but I don't have a garage. None of the houses I've found around here have garages. I don't want to leave any older car outside because everything rusts quickly.

The diving is awesome here, I was at 100' and the water was 84 degrees on an overcast day.

-Fly to japan and buy an old skyline. Probably a bit more than what I want to spend, and I have to deal with shipping and customs.

-Buy a 280z/240z with a good body and some suspension/chassis stuff done to it. Then swap in my current engine.

-Spend the money to have my Z fixed. (The engine is awesome, but the body is not so great)

-Dive gear. I want to get into tech diving (200'+, deco stops, inside wrecks and caves)

    -Save it.

    Any opinions or other ideas?

  7. I know a guy in tacoma who did that a couple years ago but with an S13. I have a video of it on my other computer. From what I remember he cut the strut towers out of the AWD car then welded them into the S13 and used the AWD subframe. The video was because noone believed he had actually done it, all the video showed was the car turning the dyno with the front wheels while the back ones were on jack stands.

He said it was pretty easy to do, didn't take lots of work, but it took almost a year from when he started to when he finished.

I'm 99% sure this is also the guy who does work on Robb's R32. (There was a post a couple days ago with pics, but they were deleted by the time I saw it)

  8. I had a honda that I'm prety sure was in the 12's. I put an air filter and muffler on it. Man was it sweet. When I told people that my 1997 4 cylinder honda could beat them they called BS.

V-4, gear driven cams, and ITBs. Spin it up to 9000 RPM and it sounded awesome.

Until I crashed it, now the replacement will do 10's (supposedly 9's) and puts ~150hp to the ground STOCK. I've seen 97 mph in first gear. Never raced it or tracked it, but eventually.

God do I love bikes. (first one was a honda VFR, second one is a R1)

  9. I really like it here. Nice weather, not too much rain. I have not gone out into tumon yet (thats where all the hotels are)

I still want a car (I bought a bicycle for now) but I doubt I'll bring the Z out, everything rusts WAY too fast.

  10. I'm not in Japan anymore. I'll try to get that stuff scanned. The only tech articles I saw were about adjusting and lapping the valves. But it looked like a L20 (dohc 2.0).

I almost picked up "option 2" because it had alot of articles that talked about different modifications for the RB2XDET, like intakes, MAF, down pipe, cat and so on.

  11. I have a long layover at Narita so I got a hotel room. Went out into Narita and walked around a bit. I didn't really see any neat cars but its cool to be here none the less.

Found a copy of Nostalgia Auto magazine where the cover story is about the 240zg. Lots of nice photo spreads, but I have no idea what they are saying. Some neat prints of the original Fairlady Z advertisements. I'll try to get some of these pages scanned once I get where I'm going.
