Finally almost done with the stereo install
Evan Purple240zt replied to Evan Purple240zt's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Hey bud, thats hardly middle of the road compared to the average system thats awesome. Hi-fonics makes some serious amps! My buddy runs a pair of europas in his SQ car. Not sure if your interested but they are for sale. Have you tried a DSP of any kind in your car? In my experience DSPs can make a huge difference in any automotive envrionment. If I were you, honestly I would try to run new speaker wires instead of messing with the bose system. They are difficult at best. There MAY be a way to put a small jumper on the amp that disables the whole thing too. My freind MIGHT know if you want me to find out how and if it can be done. As far as my equipment goes, i used an audiobahn aluminum cone 12" in the hatch. Same exact sub as the eclipse one. I have a pair of butler tube driver amps, the matching crossover and line driver too. My deck is the clarion 9255 (plain jane, with dual 20 bit D/A converter and outboard power supply). I used Vifa components and the sayos tweeters. I have 3" dome midranges in the kicks, and 6" midbasses in the doors. PITA really... LOL Anyways, take it easy. Sounds like the Q is going to sound really good! Evan -
Hey bud, try searching the archives. This has been discussed ALOT around here. There are tons of options which include coilovers or more plain jane eibach springs. Good luck, the archives have an AMAZING amount of information. Evan

Finally almost done with the stereo install
Evan Purple240zt replied to Evan Purple240zt's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Watching a PRO do your car really takes the magic out of it LOL. I have to take the sub out of the enclosure to wire it differently this week, i can take a pic of the inside of the box for you guys. just for fun we fiberglassed a big ugly pillowcase into the inside LOL. Seemed like a good idea at 3am anways... The install is somewhat simple, but with jearods help (he owns the soundgarden) everything went VERY smoothly. The DSP should fix some of the problems I am having. Ill be picking that up in decatur IL next weekend. Dave, ill take pics of the unfinished product for sure alright? Evan PS.. this really isnt a project for the faint of heart. Jearod had to cut sheetmetal from behind the doorpanel. I was so freaked out I had to leave for about an hour! LOL -
Swapping out engine.... right now.
Evan Purple240zt replied to JoeinCA's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
If you are really getting that frusturated with the engine swap etc.. All I can say is focus on the process not the product! If your mind is on the end result the whole time you will miss out on the almost "zen" like state when things fall into place perfectly. Anyways, that was a piece of advice my uncle offered to me when I started working on my car. Its one of the best pieces of advice I have ever gotten. Evan PS.. it also helps you keep going when things get really rough and long such as petes car and my 2 year turbo motor. -
Well, i finally got off my hole and started working on the stereo in my z. My buddy jearod and I worked like mad dogs to get the thing ready for the car audio show. As of now i have a 12 mounted in the spare tire well in the back. Looks very good. Custom kick panels with 3" dome mids, sayos tweeters and 6" midbass in the door. LOT of speakers up there but they really arent in the way. The sound is spectacular. Unfortunately I didnt place, so i just shelled out the cash for a Behringer DSP 8024 which is a pro audio DSP unit. We will be converting it to 12v and installing it sometime soon. Should pretty much perfect my soundstaging and depth. IT really sucks competing with people that spend 30,000 in installation and equipment. Yeah, so im getting carried away. Whats your point? LOL. It sounds awesome and i couldnt be happier. With the way it sounds now, the DSP should make me a show winner. Later for now guys, if you have any questions just shoot. We are doing the detail work now. It looks all mongrelized so im not ready to take pictures yet. Stay tuned though! Evan

Ross, i have one on my turbo motor. Its a LOUD muffler for sure. However, it is NOT louvered whatsoever so i really dont see any huge flow restriction. Now, mine is at the END of the pipe not as a resonator so theres not much restriction at that point anyways. Evan PS.. it sounds bad as hell with my 3" all the way back. I went to a carshow and some freinds just LOVED the sound of the exhaust.

If You Are Serious About A GN Drivetrain!!!!!!
Evan Purple240zt replied to Scottie-GNZ's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Jearod and I have been bouncing ideas around like mad for this car. It has REAL potential. I am not sure im ready to scrap the stock motor but the GN would just be toooo cool. Scottie, the only thing thats NOT in the car are the train batteries. its built for car audio basically. Not a dragger, the idea is to be the guy with the wall behind the seats with six subs that flies past on a dragrace. Thanks guys = Evan PS... i didnt like the starion AT ALL before. Now i think its badass, its funny how you learn to love things -

If You Are Serious About A GN Drivetrain!!!!!!
Evan Purple240zt replied to Scottie-GNZ's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Hey scottie long time no talk. My buddy has a chrystler conquest that he uses for a SPL car... bass in laymans terms. Hits 150s. Scary loud. Anyways, the car is a turd. looks nice but is just too slow. Its the turbo model but honestly i hate the FI setup etc.. I am SERIOUSLY considering swapping a GN drivetrane into that thing this summer. He owns an audio shop with a partner. I think his car weighs in at almost 5000 pounds with all the audio equipment!! We have dumped alot of weight though. He used to have four train batteries in that damn thing! Scottie, you think this could be a sucessful swap?? Any pointers or tips would be great. Im just bouncing this idea around in my head right now. Evan -
CF hood is interesting and all, but I have a few concerns. 1) Hood hinges? 2) Will the hood sag eventually? Honestly, I am really not interested in having a CF looking hood. I would rather have a fiberglass one that I paid less for and can be painted to match my car. I would consider paying 300 for a hood if the occasion arose. Which it probabally wont. I would consider paying more if it had some sort of cowl induction to get more air into the compartment. Turbos run hot Later guys - Evan PS... I HAD a fiberglass hood but dumped it because it had no hinges and was dzus fastened on. Pain in the ass IMO.

Dave, that explains why your motor seemed like such a stump puller! LOL. Sounds good buddy, going to pull on the dyno again after the cam swap etc? later bud- Evan

High Tech FSAE Stuff... Making your own V8
Evan Purple240zt replied to Drax240z's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
hey rich, where inline does the restrictor have to be. I would try forcing air THROUGH the restrictor rather then sucking if its allowed. Evan -
I conqured the CS130! Yeah! Pete, thanks for all your help. I got the light wired into my ride and shes charging like a charm now. What had me concerned was that my car would NOT run off the alternator, therefore if my battery went south i would be stranded again. I found the problem, when i wired the battery up i used BOTH the side and the top terminal on the hot side. Well, it seems that since they dont actualy "touch" each other the motor will die. If you stick a jumper between the side post and the top post things function correctly and i get my 14+ volts of power!!! I am driving this thing 4 hours tomorrow, so im DAMN relived I figured out the problem. I have a squeeking belt now though. I think oil got onto it. Im not sure if its the alternator bearing or the belt. ITs only really audible at idle. Any suggestions without trying swapping out the belt??? Thanks guy, you RULE= Evan
-
haha pete, sounds like one and the same! Are you using the factory wiring to your alternator? I bypassed all of it and am starting to wonder if that isnt part of my problem. I need to take a good look at the wiring schematic to figure out where they actually go! Thanks man= Evan PS.. glad to hear you have the same idiot light as I, two idiots in a pod i guess you could say! LOL I also snagged blue and green ones for turn signals and highbeams!
-
Pete, My understanding was the same as yours. Does your alternator maintain that voltage with accessories on? I have the SDS, HI6 and big fuel pump drawing LOTS of current. Im making progress, i read on a camaro page to hook the thick wire (dont remember its letter designation) right to the hot side of the alternator. Then hook up an idiot light in series with the hot wire to the alternater "switch" on lead. So far, so good. It seems to be working but im still not satisified with my voltage output. For awhile i did apply full voltage to the regulator, at that time it was working fine. Maybe thats what killed it? I drove my car tonight, and the alternator seems to be charging but its acting the same as it was when it pooped on me last time. I am getting high 13s at the battery from the alternator. It has never shown me a satisfactory 14 volt output. I really need to run a ground from the alternator to the battery too (forgot to do that tonight). For im sure thats not helping any. Thanks for the help pete! maybe ill go warranty my alt. tomorrow just in case!! Evan PS.. can you find out from the alternator wizard what an apropriate bulb to use is please??? I am using a radio shack panel mount indicator bulb in red. It seems to be coming on and going off at the apropriate times.

hate to say it, but im sick of dicking around with my z for quite sometime now. The GN swap would be cool, but im just no longer up to that kinda work.. .HOWEVER... I drive a chevy S10 and in the next few years, maybe after i roll over 110000 miles, and get some dough it may become a new bodystyle syclone!! Awesome motor, just awesome= Evan

Find a local place who does custom glass work. Like cutting, and installation of mirrors. Thats where i got the things you are looking for, minus the piano hinges! I used my stuff on a cabinet though LOL. good luck= Evan

Hey guys, compliments of a charging system problem, my car got a ride home on a flatbed trailer at 3 am the other night. I cant take it anymore. Heres what i have done that is reeking havock. I installed an A/C delco CS130 alternator. Does anyone have any experience with this thing. I keep seeing a resistor in the field circut but cant figure out what the thing is rated at. The alternator never charged above 13.4 volts at any time. however, that may have been due to a crappy battery which gave up ship. I got a new battery today. If you have experience with the CS130, or have a vehicle with one in it. Please tell me what the charging voltage is AT the battery when revving the motor, not at idle. Thanks so much guys, im very frusturated. This is the only reason i still have not finished break in! too unreliable. BTW, i ran a 4gauge hot wire to the battery for the charge to go through. I dont seem to be getting ANY output from the alternator right now. Maybe I f-ed something up. I can get another.

YEAH, i can finally help! Jegs sells a k$n filter with a 3.5 inch opening. I used on on my s10 and one in my z Evan PS its shorter and cheaper than the 3" version

Dan. 5" tach and spedometer. Of the two choices of gauge size, its the larger. 2 3/16 or something? Dont remember off the top O me head. Good luck- Evan
