Ahem.. weeeelll.. the smog police are here, it's just a 'rolling' 20 year limit. IE; anything 20 years old or older, doesn't require emisions testing. Being that my rx is an 86, I have a 'trip permit' on it right now (legal to drive for ten days, so you can get safety and emisions testing done prior to getting plates) but I know the thing won't pass legaly.. I figure I put a few more temp. permits on it for this year, and next summer I will be able to licence it and get plates without a smog test. About the hood, I think I will keep it now, but I'll probly redo it at some point.. I want to paint the whole car black, and I'll get it airbrushed on and clearcoated. I still can't help but grin when I pull in the the driveway and see it staring back at me.

Figured I'd post in here, as it's not a tech thing.. just a "Look at me, I'm so happy I'm having big dumb fun in a V8 hot rod!!" thing.. I posted a pic a week ago of my 'punisher' hood, and although I figured it'd be a temporary thing, it's really growing on me.. This thing's put the hurt on a few hondas, a a ford pickup, and a camaro (A V6.. I don't know why he even tried.. oh yah, probly figured it was a claped out rotary!) .. muhahaha.. PUNISHED!! So yah.. two months of work, $2000 invested, 2 rads later (blew one up on saterday) and I'm riping up the streets in my V8 powered 86 rx7. This is so much fun, and I'm only running a bone stock tbi 350!! Got some tuning to do, exhast leaks to sort out, and a little bit of wiring gremlins to be killed off, but in all, I'm pretty happy with it. Smokes the dinky 205/50/16's out back like nothing, but when it does finaly hook up (halfway through 2nd) it pulls like a freight train. By next summer, I'll have a nice daily driver/hotrod to use and I'll probly rip the Z apart again. (front frame, suspension, brakes and driveshaft are toasted.. not to mention the masive oil leak from the front of the engine..) Assuming things work out, I'll have the Z back together for the following year so I can re-do the RX7 cause I'm sure I'll be wanting more power by then.. hmm.. Ls1/t56 maybe...

So a pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel on his crotch

Yarrr... tis a good day to talk like pirate.. -
I almost bought an XR4Ti a few years ago.. First turbo car I had ever driven and WOW did that thing move... Than I started doing some reaserch and discoverd they are not really a very good car, despite being pretty quick.. Also, the prices for replacment parts (in Canada anyway) of any sort are insane.. Cool swap though, I'll bet that thing goes like a scared rabbit on rails..

Cute underage chick with a hairy p***y!! check it out

I just had to see how a post like this could live long enough to get this many replys without getting deleted!! -
I'd check that the needles are in good shape (not bent/worn) and not sticking, and check the float setings on each carb as well. Also, it could be your pistons need a top up (don't know if you're running ATF or engine oil...) or maybe the front carb is low on/leaking damper fluid... I'm sure one of the 'experts' here can give you some more info, as I'm sure I don't know evrything.

Heck man, if you have a runing parts car to pick from, I'd just start switching out parts.. TPS, maf, ect.. Also, the ting I've noticed about VG engines is the condition AND quality of the cap/rotor is very important. Even though it lookes ok, it may be causing problems..
-
I had an 85 non turbo and I LOVED that car. I don't know what the engine # was, but it was the twin spark plug 4 cyl motor. (???) I thought it was pretty quick for what it was... kinda felt like a 280zx Well manered and very reliable. I did have some isues with the rear dick brakes.. chewed through pads as fast (or faster..) then the front, and warped a couple rotors.. mind you I let the rear pads get so low once the rivets scraped them a bit so I assume I screwed the calipers there (pistons came out too far, scored and stuck after that) But all in all it was a great car, and took quite a beating for the 2.5 years I owned it. Not bad considering I picked it up for $500 and hardly did any major work to it!

That apears to be the same fan I got from a J/Y years ago that I used in a RX7 V8 I built. Had a hard time keeping it cool on really hot days, but overall it worked ok. If you can get one pushing and one pulling, you chould be fine.

Hey... maybe not the Z, but I bet they'd fit and look really good on my 86 rx7! And I could run the Z 6 spoke rims, which stick out 1" from the stock rx fenders as is and rub... hmm...
-
Buy it!!! Keep the ZXT too. Heck, you can't drive both at the same time anyway!! Really, two clasic Z's should give you a break on insurance, (more than one I would think) and if you don't finish the zxt for another 1.5 years so be it.. you'll have a Z to drive, AND it's your old car!! If I could buy my first car (and first Z) back, I would. I can't because I watched a guy dismantle and cut it up two years ago, using it for a parts car. (I hadn't seen the old girl in about 6 years.. I almost cried..) Besides, who else will really appreciate 'your' old car as much as you?!?! Some kid that buys it off this guy? Possibly an *shudder* NON Z guy who doesn't know anything about it and will destroy it? AHHHGG!!!! BUY IT BACK!!!

Heh heh... well, it's ready to rock but I'm waiting for a guy to come look at it for a safety check. Once I have a safety, I will put a trip permit on it and go hunting. (next year it's exempt from emision testing, so I may wait to plate it till the spring) I havn't seen said supra lately, he may have gone home to toronto or something.. this area is starting to slow down now that the last long weekend of the summer has past, but with the heat lately.. who knows, people may come back for a few more weeks at the cottage.. muhahaha... guys are going to laugh at me when they pull up to a stop light beside my car, cause it's actually really quiet... at idle. It gets a little louder as I step into it though... As for selling it, I don't know yet.. Just depends one how much I get pulled over I guess. I know I will, what with the evil looking hood and all, but that would be ok.. it's the getting pulled over for speeding that wories me! I'm having some .. personal.. issues lately too, so I may have to take a break from cars for a while... But for now, I want to keep it..

So My V8 rx7 is pretty much ready to go.. It needed a hood, and unfortunatly the thing wouldn't quite fit... Soooo.. me and a few friends sat in it, jumped on it, bashed, hit and generaly abused a spare hood till it would fit and latch closed. It has a bit of a gap now along the fenders and head lights, but being flat black on a red car you can't really notice too much... oh, and the visual distraction takes your attention away from the poor fitment of the hood too.. I got bored.. had some white spray paint lying around... made a stencil from some thin cardboard.. Lots of people drove by my house yesterday and stared....and now I'm SURE the next door neighbour hates/fears me.

About the tach; Um.. in that car? Purely for the 'look' and really really.. redundant, as I can't see the need to keep track of the stock drivetrain shifting at the exact same point all the time... THAT is an example of an auto that should not have a tach. On the other hand, many cars that are actually BUILT to perform, or have say.. a ratchet shifter (for example.. like my V8 rx7...countless members here, ect) well, I say a tach is an important add on. No use bangin through the gears without knowing how fast the engine is spining; it might sound and feel good, but maybe the poor old sbc is redlining! The gas filler.. hmm.. I guess thats a non smoking car for sure! I'm thinking it's probly not even legal for road use.. The body work; Amazing work, lots of talent and time in that.. thing.. personaly I think it's as nice looking as a steaming pile of dog poop, and I bet it weighs as much as my truck! wow... just wow...
-
Hmm.. you, that sounds right. Didn't someone here say that the Zs , along with most vehicles, are built to intentionaly 'push' when driven to the limit? (Understeer instead of oversteer) Really, that fact saved my arse once.. Back when I had my first car (81 280zx) I came around a left hand 'curve' on a backroad, driving hard having fun. Suddenly, the car wasnt turning anymore.. I turned the wheel more, and nothng changed.. wtf!? So I lept off the throttle but before I could even get on the brakes the car got back in line. (I actually had to turn the wheel back a bit, to correct for the amount I had turned while sliding) IMO adding weight to the rear would only make the situation WORSE though.. I overloaded my truck one day and coming up the highway was a real rolercoaster.. Front end was light as a feather and very twitchy. Heck, I drove the Z the other night basicaly on fumes, and after puting a little over half a tank of fuel in it I noticed a big change in the way it drove.. not as nice..
-
I've thought about doing it too, but to a 2wd. (think lowered old school 'sport' truck ) I started looking at one in a wreckers a while back, and it would be a very tight squeze indeed. For the 2wd, that didn't seam like a big deal to me though, simply cut into the fire wall for clearance and move the whole engine/trans further back about 8-10". A side-effect would be better weight balance too I would think. (I had a 93 2wd w/V6 and it was quite tail happy) Being a 4x4 though, I don't know how much you could move the driveline back.. then you're into a lot more custom work, driveshafts, ect..
-
If it were me, FIRST thing I would do is waste a day of my life and actually wait by the mail box. Well, a short distance away, within eye and earshot. It will be a horible waste of time and cause a lack of sleep.. you'll want some food and coffe with you.. (do it after a shift when you have a day off following) You know the dick isn't going to even try to deliver the package, so when he walks up to stick the piece of paper in your box, just walk up to him and ask why the hell he isn't doing his job? If he gets too irate, that's cool, let it go. Sign for your package, and go into the post office the next day. Explain what happened and ask why you should have to put up with it. That's just me though..

HA!! DOOD!!! I'm 26 and don't even clear 19k a year! (Canadian at that!! ) Although I've been in the same boat having to sell off cars in financial crunches, man... I agree with Oleh. If at all possible, KEEP THE CAR(s) and pick up on them later. Doesn't cost much to stick them somewhere for a year or two, and by that point you'll hopefully have a better idea of 'where you're going' or what you will be doing.. then if you still think you want to sell them off, you'll feel better about it.

That HAS to be a record of some sort.. The guy was only registered for what.. 15 minits, and he's baned already?!?! Man.. guess he didn't believe how 'tight' this place is actually run...(seriously, I've heard storys all over the net...) BAWWWHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Some people... Oh, thank you Tim, nice work.

Ok... Had a rental car one time after crashing my truck; It was an (almost brand new at the time) 02 ford Contour Gt. Drove nice, had good power and options.. Then the damn thing 'locked' into cruise control while I was driving in town. Actually, the stupidly designed plastic clip that worked the throttle when cruise was active, broke and jamed. I had been on the highway earlier that day, had the cruise set to about 110kph. Sure enough, before I knew what was going on the thing was trying to get back up to 110 IN TOWN!!!! I pretty much killed the brakes and I'm sure there was major engine damage in the end, cause I finaly smacked it into nutral and it reved to 7K and stayed there till I turned off the key! I had a 91 escort GT for a while too.. Not really a terrible car, but again, some aspects of the design were.. imo, silly. The 'force you to wear them' passive seat belts (got me in the side of the head a few times..) and the awefull body roll in corners would be the major problems I had.. Oh ya, the rear strut towers ROTTING off the car and having the struts pop into the hatch area... boing boing....

Well.. I guess the fun is over for me.. this is long btw..
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in Non Tech Board
Heh.. well, I'm trying not to look at this as the 'end of my life' but really, it IS in a way.. It's going to mean the end of my life as I've known it for the last few years. So be it. The girl is an old friend of mine, her son isn't a bad kid, and she's going to school to be a nurse.. hehe.. she can fix me when I break myself!!! She started saying "Oh man.. I don't know how I'm gona go to school now, taking care of TWO kids.." I looked at her and said. "Uh.... huh? You're not going to be doing it by your self though!" I've decided I have to 'do the right thing' and made that clear to her, but it's going to take some time... and I don't think moving into her place is the best plan right now.. The thing I'm having trouble with, is what to do about my current situation, aka; the girlfriend I've been living with for a while.. This was a bad scene anyway as far as I'm conserned, but this doesn't make things easier for me.. -

Well my 280Z 'requires' premium fuel now too. It just refuses to run on regular, or even the mid-grade. Ping pop bang fart....
