Thank you, Uncle John....might you be talking about my highly engineered, custom made, high dollar hood prop? Actually, that is the low tech version...wait until you see the high tech version made from a Maple branch...) of course it is painted to match...... Wayne

Steeltoad..I just happened to open your links...AWESOME body work on the Z car...certainly one of a kind! Hey_Allen...many thanks for weighing in...I understand what you mean and it would make sense...I am far enough along on my other path that I need to keep on going..the hat doesn't look as good, but it solves some other clearance challenges also. Hey Gearheadstik...you know, of course, that Rip started this mess, right? I'll get even with him if he ever comes up for air...) just kidding...it's nice to do something a little off the norm even though Hahns and Rip were there a long time ago and all the Bad-A--turbo'd Datsun/Toyota (in deference to my OLD buddy Scottie) motors out there are kickin' butt already. Wayne

Hey, thanks Jerry...I appreciate. Bet you can't wait to get that thing on the track in this weather, eh? Carb hat is an Extreme Velocity...supposed to be one of the best. Slowly but surely working through the fitment issues...makes it more fun...) Wayne

Thanks for the kudo's...hoping to live up to them...Hahns, I am not going to be able to have as clean an install as yours...I really wanted to use the hat that comes with it, but the configuration doesn't let me do what I want...besides, the pressure relief is in the hat and I'm running a MAF sensor in the intake tract, so I need the BOV before the MAF so I don't over-fuel when I let off...only time will tell on the fuel. I'll know once it is back running. Wayne

Pretty sure Cometic doesn't make a gasket for that motor...it's a 454 small block built by Bill Mitchell...not worried about the 10:1 compression...building the entire system to take that into consideration as well as only running max 10-12 lbs of boost. Radiator is Camero...don't remember the year... used the fire wrench to make room between the rails...about 1/2 inch on each side. Hat is O-ringed

My impatience has done it again...couldn't wait to start my twin-turbo install until next year like I planned. Started yeserday and am running into some component location issues, strut and valve cover issues and as can be seen in the photo's, I will have to low-mount my alternator on the drivers side. It will be a plumbing nightmare, but I don't see anything yet that some good ol' GA ingenuity and a fire-wrench won't take care of. Banks built the kit for use without an intercooler, however, I'm running higher than normal compression (10:1 vice 8.6:1) so I am running one to help out as well as running a boost-registered timing retard. Methinks there is a beast under there somewhere...) More as I get more done. Wayne

some speedshops make me crazy

NO, you're NOT the only one who would never frequent a place that wants to make a killing of the backs of each and every one of their customers....And I get very vocal on the regional scene as to which are ripoffs and which are reasonable to all whom will listen. As you know, Grump...there are lots of them out there...usually, what goes around, comes around...I sincerely hope that is sooner than later. ) Wayne -
Many thoughts about this...here is my experience. I'm running a Bill Mitchell 454 small block , powerglide, 9 inch ford with 4.86 gears in a 240Z. 600 hp @ 6100 rpm at the flywheel. I started out running 1 7/8 shorties, however I had to relocate steering on the drivers' and box the frame on the passenger side. I changed from 1050 dominator that came with the engine to fuel injection. I originally ran side pipes with full 3" exhaust from the header flange, 3" straight through muffler and 3" turn-downs. This is a 10.1:1 motor I run on 93 octane pump gas and drive on the street. Best run in this configuration was 6.69 @ 102.89 in the 1/8th mile. I changed to 1 3/4 long tube headers (only change) and ran a best of 7.12 @100 and change in the 1/8th. Changed back to the 1 7/8 shorties, changed mufflers to 3" Flowmaster 40's and ran a best of 6.83, changed to dynomax straight-through's and ran a best of 6.72. Go figger...for my particular combination, seems the 1 7/8 shorties work the best. Wayne

Had to do it!! Twin Turbo 454/240Z :o)
rytherwr replied to rytherwr's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
WHOOOOEEEEE! Jerry! That is sweet! What a difference! Are you going to run twins or one? I can't quite read the writing on the new one...looks like a pretty big T04. Can't wait to see it when you get it together. Great stuff! That Mustang is a heck-of-a grocery getter! I know the feeling...although mine looks like junk, it sure turns heads when I pull up to the parts store (or anywhere else, for that matter) I may get way too anxious and start putting the banks system together sooner than later. rytherwr replied to rytherwr's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
You are exactly correct, 280Z.....to clarify, I was thinking I would start restricting with these turbo's around 6K and I don't want that, that is why I said they were on the verge of being too small...actually, I re-looked and they are .98 AR vice .96 so I think not so small they will be into boost at too low an RPM. We'll see, however, and I will sell them to you and get bigger ones, eh? ) Thanks for the kudo's and comments...no pics yet as I haven't begun the work and won't until probably the beginning of next year. I will post as I go at that time. Wayne -

Many thanks, Hanns I sure appreciate. What lift and rocker ratio are you using? Roller or flat tappet? The cam in the car right now is a naturally aspirated, solid roller with the following specs: Open Close Int 12 btdc 56 abdc Exh 59 bbdc 15 atdc Intake Exhaust Dur@.050 248 254 Lobe Sep is 112 degrees. Lift is 616 intake and 622 exhaust with 1.6 rockers Wayne -

HUGE help, John! You are da Man!!! I appreciate the info...A little surprising on the 110 centerline, but who am I to argue? Again, many thanks. Wayne -

WOW! Super stuff Jerry. I find it's a whole new ball game...not necessarily rocket science, but I am certainly paying attention to the details. RIP has been over to the Albany track a couple of times and I blame him and Hahns for my turbo fetish. It will be a while before I get mine together also..still experimenting with nitrous. I am still up in the air about cam selection, suggestions are always welcome. I am trying to be conservative as I still drive mine on the street. Will be great to hear the SC connection passing gas during the burn-out! ) Wayne -

Hey Rick, the hot rod is looking GOOD! Good to hear from you guys... Scottie, I still have to get it done and get it to the ground, so not to worry yet. Knowing you, I think I will still have my hands full....) Cal Poly, I think if I had a 75 foot yacht to tow, I would sell it to pay for this stuff....) know what I mean??? Wayne -

Thanks for the confirmation, John...looks like we can blame all this stuff on Rip, eh? Sounds like y'all have your hands full with projects. Best of luck to you. Many thanks, Turbomeister...you just confirmed a couple of things for me and I think I will need to go with the 370's (or higher) gears as I want to keep the rpm's down in the 6K to 6.5K range. I believe this thing will put out enough torque to handle those gears easily even though I weigh in at 2890. Yes, 13.5 inches of rubber on each side....I just need to figure out how the 10.5 guys are hooking while running 7's in the quarter and adjust accordingly. Wayne -

Thanks, J&J..be good to see you folks. Many thanks for the well wishes and I apologize for not being able to help with the block. Looks like you have a handle on it. Is there any truth to the rumor coming out of SC that certain brothers of supercharged Z fame might be contemplating some hair driers? ) Wayne -

Hope to be there also, Deja...good to hear from the gang. Turbomeister, I totally missed one of your questions...sorry about that...the Turbos are Turbonetics with a .96 turbine AR...I think I feel they are on the edge of being too small, but I will try them and see. Too small on the street is better than too big, me-thinks...I don't need to be running around at 5K rpm all the time, eh? If it turns out they are not doing what I need, they will be up for sale and I will get some larger turbine AR's Wayne -

rytherwr replied to rytherwr's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Thanks for the well wishes, guys....I appreciate. Turbomeister...you being my hero and all, you are also guilty of me being in the pickle I'm in...) I've been drooling over your engine since I joined the site. I have a couple of hoods that I am willing to modify to fit whatever configuration I end up with. I have had a number of chats with folks over the years concerning the two trains of thought when it comes to forced induction. One train says low compression and lots of boost and the other says higher compression and low boost..both camps seem to have their pro's and con's, however, my 454 is a Bill Mitchell small block version so I want to keep it intact. Everything is forged and I think if I keep the boost, fuel and timing reasonable, stuff will stay in one piece and still kick out 800 horses on pump gas. If I see I will have some problems, I will build a lower compression, purpose built motor for the turbo system. I will also change out the rear chunk back to a 4:10 vice 4:86 and even higher (3:73, etc. gearing) if I have to. I have 13.5 inches of basically what we used to know as cheater slicks on the ground and a four-link to play with, so we'll see. Wayne -
Hey, all...long time, no talk.... Couldn't help myself any more...after hangin' around Rip, thinking about all those steep on-ramps I might have to get up and cogitating for a bit, I just had to get a Banks twin turbo kit for the hot rod. Got it sitting in the barn waiting its' turn to make some horsies on the 454 in my Z. The reason it's waiting its' turn is I am refining my nitrous setup at the moment and haven't had a chance to try it out yet. First things first, of course. With luck, I will have the nitrous setup down the track this coming weekend and see what we can do. I have two different scenarios for the Banks kit...blow-through and fuel injection...I have both setups and will see what happens. I am running 10:1 compression so I am looking at making from 6 to 10 lbs of boost through an intercooler using a boost reference timing retard box and 93 octane pump gas so I should be fine once I get the AFR where I want it. I'm thinking around 14:1 under cruise conditions and 11.8 to 12.3 under boost conditions. The system won't be operational for a while as I am collecting all the other parts I need. Wish me luck and will keep you posted on all systems. Wayne

Heck-of-a-show, Jon!!!! Many thanks for the video and great meeting you at SEZ8. I think a more appropriate name would be "1BADZ" Make a catchy little license plate, don't ya think??? Wayne

No problem, Davy...gave Jon the cash, he took your handle and publicly thanked you during the drawing, as I would like to do also. I believe he will contact you so he can send you a signed Phillips Racing T shirt also. You missed a good one...but I'm sure it will be well documented as the week goes by...the hotrod didn't do well...wasn't smart enough to figure out the gremlins, but ran the truck and won 3 out of 4..would have done better, but the computer shuts me down at 92 mph...about the 1000 foot mark...gotta fix the speed limiter Wayne
