DALE!!!! You SLY devil, you...gotta keep an eye on you ALL the time!! ) Great stuff! Sounds great and I'm with John...numbers aren't bad for stuff that you yanked out of the yard. Now I know how to choose a good dyno...based on the setup assistant, right? See, John and Jerry should have spilled the beans before!!! ) Go figger... Wayne

S&S part number 5205...mine are 1 3/4 OD and they fit well...I took them off because I now have turbo down-pipes. They are thermal coated inside and out...cost $567. They have 3 1/8th mile runs on them...make me a reasonable offer plus shipping. They fit the JTR set-back position. Wayne

Darn, Dale! When I sold my 280Z about 2 months ago, I let one go for nothing...sure wish I had known. I'd have given it to you 'cause your such a good guy...sorry about that... Wayne
-
Hey Jerry, almost called you guys last night....) Just kidding, just kidding....however, the point is that I know you are serious and I really appreciate that. Y'all are great Americans!!! See you later.... Wayne

Well, folks, Murphy has been riding me pretty hard lately and about four this evening, my FI system decided to go South (or MORE south than we are). Not to worry, being the lazy bum that I am, when I first decided to turbo the hot rod, I was going to run a blow-through system and bought all the stuff to make that happen but changed my mind because I really wanted to do FI. I had Pro Systems build me a blow-through carb specifically for my combination so that is a huge helper. I have started to tear it all apart and change over to blow-through and I thought I could just leave everything in place, unhook the computer and go from there...ain't gonna happen...the fuel rails get in the way so off comes the entire thing. Luckily I have everything I need to make the swap except maybe some fittings. Gonna be a long night...wish me luck. I will run this baby at DNI come hell or high water!!!!!! Wayne
-
That's great job, Miles, especially on the L88 type hood install. I know how hard that is because I did the same thing with some mods to clear the turbo's. Your project is an inspiration! Wayne
-
Hey Miles, super stuff! Congrats...looks like you're close to finishing it up. Nice engineering work Wayne
-
Warren, sounds like you have your stuff together...I'm glad for you! Looking forward to see that baby run! Hey Dale, who on earth said I knew what I was doing? I'm just gonna pull the trigger and hope the car gets in the way...) Wayne

Plan B (always gotta have a Plan is to close the ends of the cover, plug up two sets of heat lamps and paint away! Shooting Acrylic Lacquer with medium drying lacquer thinner, so about the time it hits the car, it is dry (not quite that fast, but darn close). Wait about 10 minutes between coats...the more I look at it, the more I am shying away from the flames...will take too long to do them right. Can always add them after. My wife suggested it would be fun to take it there the way it is...not sure why she wants me harassed within an inch of my life....go figger...) Wayne

Scary, but I will do my Rip imitation ( sure wish HE was doing it..) and finish the body work/prep and shoot the primer tomorrow afternoon/evening (weather permitting), finish the final smoothing Sat a.m. and shoot the color and clear Sat afternoon and Sunday. Going to run 16 coats of Firemist Red, try some ghost flames and shoot 8 coats of clear. Will let it vegitate until next Friday and begin rubbing/polishing. Hope to be purty by Sat. Road tests and test run on the 1/8th mile here last Sunday. Running very rich but don't have time to tune it as my guy is prepping a bunch of cars for the Bradenton NMRA and can't get at me. Running rich with timing backed way down, 6 lbs of boost and the alternator belt came off during the burnout, ran a 7 flat at 96 mph. I'm guessing I'm leaving at least a hundred horses on the table at 6 psi untuned. I'm still going to run it at DNI and see where we can get...) See ya there! Wayne

I'm still awake..TT454 update
rytherwr replied to rytherwr's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Wow! Jerry, I'm impressed! Going uptown with the FAST system, I see. From everything I read and hear, that will do anything you want it to do. Bummer about the dyno, however, I believe you and John have the experience and intestinal fortitude to have it sorted out by the 16th. Best of luck to you. Took the hot-rod out for a shake-down cruise yesterday and save for a couple of leaks, it runs well. Z-Gad was right, the motor is much happier with the 3.50 gears. Only made a couple of short power runs and I'm impressed. Only running 6 lbs of boost until I get all the gauges hooked up so I can see what the AFR and timing look like, but no strange noises at the moment. Wayne -
I'm still awake..TT454 update
rytherwr replied to rytherwr's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
WOW! Thanks for the kudo's. Let's see if I can respond to these in the correct sequence: Jerry: I think you are right...the thrash is on! I always look forward to seeing you guys. Z-Gad: I screwed up...if I had asked you before, I would already have known to go to the other gears. FYI, I just watched your 8.91 Orlando video last night..keeps me motivated! Cockerstar: Yes, I did, however, a deal fell through and I was running out of time, so decided to go this way for now. If I like the result, I may see if I can use this one as a form and have someone make me a fiberglass one...time will tell. Deja: Thank you Sir...actually, this thing sounds like a cadillac now...exhaust running through the turbos then 3" to Dynomax straight-throughs...very quiet. Wayne -
Hey folks, waiting for my down-pipes and wastegate pipes to get back from Jet-Hot and thought I would provide an update on the hotrod. Had to put some new sneakers on...couldn't begin to get traction even with the M&H's..I think a lot of that had to do with the 4.11 gears so I changed them out to 3.50's and a spool. As much street driving as I do, I can deal with the scrubbing on the occasional corner. Went to a 31" tall MT ET Street w/about 12.5" on the ground. Took the whale tail off...and will smooth that out. Had to replace the air dam as I crashed into the front of the trailer last year on the way to Reynolds and cut the other one off. I had to section the dam about 2.5 inches as that is how much the wide body adds in the front. Standard air dam doesn't fit. As you can see, decided to do a modified L-88 hood with bulges on each side to clear the turbo's. It's pretty ugly right now, however it will be ok once finished and painted. Also in the midst of installing my alcohol injection, AFR system, electronic boost control and boost gauges so plenty to keep me busy and no time to do it....Always the same, ain't it? True to form, I will probably be working on this thing right up through Sat morning on the way to Reynolds...) Wayne

Hey, CaliGuy, Not to beat a dead horse, but if you are on a tight budget, you can't get there from here (your original thoughts) and you need to read ALL of Grumpy's info and talk to a LOT of folks who have the technical know-how (and there are lots on this site), revise your goal, decide if you have the skills to pursue and have FUN! If you want to throw out the budget, then all is possible. There are a bunch of $100K-$150K, purpose-built hotrods out there that put out 700-1000 streetable hp (although you can't generally get it to the ground on the street with street tire pressures) and present a total package (chassis, engine, trans, driveshaft, rear end, etc) that will make you grin stupidly most of the time...) By streetable, I mean pump gas, idle fairly well, do not overheat, you can run your air conditioning and heater, etc., etc. Now if we could only hit the lottery........) Wayne

bit of oil pan gasket info
rytherwr replied to grumpyvette's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Many thanks, Grump...very timely...just so happens I needed to pull my pan to re-weld the turbo drain-back fittings that I screwed up the first time by being lazy and I used your info to get the gasket. I appreciate! Wayne -
I drove the LT1 swap to work today.
rytherwr replied to deja's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Hey, Dale...great deal! I know about the post-partum stuff...my mother-in-law keeps on asking my wife how I can do work on one little car for so long...) It's easy...when you get it running right...tear it apart and do something else to it...works every time...) Looking forward to seeing you next month, also.. Wayne -
Gotta go with the clear, Hanns.... Wayne

Yes, Sir...the beast has awakened....I've tried to make an in-car video 3 times now, but can't seem to keep the camera running...Zero traction in low gear and I haven't been able to stay in it long enough to see how it feels with traction in high gear yet. That thing is wild! Only running 6 lbs of boost at the moment without a tune and no alcohol injection. Going to take the down-pipes and wastegate pipes apart and send them off to get Jet-Hot coated...while that is going on, I have to get some hood and front air dam work done. But, yes, I think the beast will be breathing at DNI,,) Wayne

Lookin' good, my friend. Be great to see finished product and you at DNI! Wayne

Add one to the list of running LS1 swaps
rytherwr replied to heavy85's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Almost like having your first child, huh? Congratulations! It never ends...) Wayne -
Yes...the first time out at SEZ in Reynolds GA, it ran 11.20 at 126 mph. Wrong gears, wrong tranny, and carburated. Only ran the 1/8th since I changed gears, transmissions and went to fuel injection. According to my 1/8th mile times, it would have run 10.10 or so in the quarter nowadays. Wayne

Pyro...because it IS a 454...Bill Mitchell 454 Special Edition small block chevy...600 hp naturally aspirated. Same bore and stroke as a big block, however, packaged in an Motown small block. Hey Rick...and I would love to be where you are with your car....h-m-m-m-m, your car, my engine...that would be a killer combo, eh? Wayne

Thanks for the complements, Drew...I have been known to be called worse than that....) Many thanks, John...I see where Jerry is getting the itch to put his together...hope I had a little to do with that..) I'm hoping to have this thing done in a couple of weeks (gotta wait for the down-pipes to get back from coating) and will try to video when it comes is resurrected in it's present form...) Wayne
