Because I think you and 1 fast z are misleading people. Not intentionally, not with malice, but I think you are. I guess we'll see if the engine pings after you get MS installed. Until then I can only go on what you're telling me, which is that it pings at high rpms. FWIW I've always tried for 13.2:1 on my NA engine. I think the 12.5 is a turbo thing, adds a little bigger safety margin cause they need it. It wasn't my Gtech. A friend borrowed it when he found out I was ready to install the triples. He had it for 3 days, we got to use it on the last day because I was working out linkage and other crap. When I finally got all that working, the clutch was way beyond unable to deal with the increased hp. We did the test anyway just for kicks. This was the original gtech setup which reads fast on the trap speed (or so I hear). I figure it was probably good for 105 mph corrected, and probably would have been higher had the damn clutch not slipped so much. It was probably still slipping a bit 2 or 3 seconds into 3rd and 4th gear. I do have a lot of headwork done, and I have the larger cam. This video was taken a couple days after we did that test. I had just installed the ACT clutch at this point: http://videos.streetfire.net/player.aspx?fileid=3B512F0F-8AD1-4DAB-BD8E-0AE1768FB642 Compression does NOT equal power! Compression does NOT equal power! Compression does NOT equal power! Compression does NOT equal power! Compression does NOT equal power! From the other thread I linked to earlier: Not necessarily. Probably, but not necessarily. In the long run your engine probably won't like pinging at WOT. It may not have caused any serious damage YET, but it will if you keep it running like that and run it at WOT all the time. A big nasty cam would help you out a LOT. Aftermarket EFI would help A LOT. That is the reason why I keep arguing. Because you really SHOULD have those things to run this high compression engine on pump gas. If you don't, then you shouldn't be doing it, and you shouldn't be telling other people to do it IMO. I LOVE the MN47 head. If I were going to build another L head for racing, that would be it for sure. Key words "for racing".
  2. GC Pros: infinite adjustment, looks cool Cons: have to cut strut towers, caster adjustment doesn't even work, but they keep advertising like it does. EMI Pros: SP legal for autox, don't need to cut to install Con's: Don't have infinite adjustment, camber changes affect caster and vice versa

I had just installed my Mikunis when I did that 1/4 run and was running a stock clutch. The stock clutch was starting to be too weak for the old engine with SU's, and it wasn't anywhere close to holding down the power with the triples. I know the numbers don't jive, but that's because of the clutch. One more time, QUENCH is great, but octane is going to be necessary for anyone who lives in a state with 91.

I think this was pretty much addressed to me, so I'll respond. Again, this is a GOOD thing??? With my HORRIBLY slipping clutch it ran the quarter in 15.5 at 108 according to the gtech with a vehicle weight of 2635 lbs. When you knock a couple mph off and do the old trap speed to hp equation comes out around 250whp. Still think it couldn't get your ZX into the low 15's? Maybe not without the new clutch... I'm betting not. I think you'd have to run super rich to keep from pinging with MS on your setup. If you stepped up to 95 or so in the octane, I'd bet you could run a good ratio in the low 13:1's and run all the timing you needed to maximize performance. I bet if you slapped a shaved P90 on a flat top block and could run a proper amount of advance without pinging it would be faster. Still sounds sucky to me. "I haven't broken any ring lands" is not something to be bragging about IMO.
  5. My buddy started with the WVO diesel rabbit truck (which was PAINFULLY slow BTW), now he has a 87 Turbo Diesel Toyota 1.9L (?) that he's converting. He also has a hardcore rock crawling 4x4 Toyota that he is converting from gas to diesel and WVO.

I'm going to shut up now. Maybe BRAAP will keep the argument going, but I think I've said all I need to say, and it doesn't seem to be making a dent.

I know we've talked about yours before too Pete, but you should try some high octane gas too and see what that last 10 or so degrees of timing would do for the whp. Or just get a bigger cam.
  8. It will work, you need all the clutch bits from the L24 or the L28ET, in this case you'd want the L28ET stuff because the L24 clutch was weaker and really won't hold down turbo power. So flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, and throwout bearing need to match, and you should use the L28ET stuff. The Datsun 4 speed isn't as burly as the T5 that the L28ET comes with, but it should work and if you're nice to it should last a while. Lots of guys transplant the L28ET and use the NA ZX 5 speed. Your transmission is essentially the same, but doesn't have 5th gear.

Just for reference I have an L28/E31 combo with ~11:1 and polished chambers. I run 44 Mikunis which run in the high 12:1 air/fuel range under WOT (according to a narrow band O2), I have a .490/280 cam, and in CA and here in WA I have to have at least 95 octane in order to run full timing advance in the mid 30's. No point in having the compression if you have to back the timing way off, which is what I read about lots of people doing. I've been probably the BIGGEST proponent of quench here, had it out with Dan Baldwin a couple times. I think the quality of the gas you're using makes a HUGE difference, and I think that quench is important but can't overcome the crappy gas some parts of the country have.
  10. Good luck Dan. Beautiful gun BTW.
  11. Because F1 engines aren't powerful enough to create 5 gs of acceleration. It's easier to create braking torque than accelerating torque. Top fuel dragsters only accelerate at 3.3 gs according to this website. Not suprising that F1 cars can't get as much acceleration as a top fuel dragster. Take a look at this: http://www.geocities.com/dtmcbride/misc/speed-acceleration.html
  12. I bought my 3.7 LSD for $325. I'm keeping it though...
  13. Actually real life is very much the same. The problem isn't lateral vs straight traction, it's lateral vs straight acceleration. Very tough to accelerate to 4 gs. Much easier to DECELERATE to 4 or 5 gs, which F1 cars do. They also turn at 3 to 4 gs.
  14. Don't take my word for it. Search and find the info yourself.
  15. Place a classified ad if you want to sell stuff. Other people are running the 300ZX CV's with a swaybar BTW. Search and you'll find the details on that one. The 280ZXT CV is bigger and harder to run the swaybar with, but people have done it with those CV's also.
  16. It's km/hr. I converted it and 391 is 242 mph, which is definitely possible. I think it has to do with the arcade mode vs the sim mode, and that Toyota is DAMN fast and the guy playing the game is DAMN good. I've been into the 5:20's in the sim mode, but I'm still using the joystick so I'm handicapped somewhat. I don't think the game is totally accurate either. I pulled a 6:53 in a 240Z for cryin out loud. Look at that link I had earlier to REAL lap times, that's faster than a Radical SR8. Some of it has to do with driving on the verge of death the whole time, but also some of that has to be the game just not being accurate. For one thing when I did the 6:53 I had super soft tires on. If it weren't a practice session the tires would be completely gone within 1/4 lap.

I will go so far as to say that for a guy in CA who doesn't want to spend money on AV Gas or other high octane fuel the MN47 would be the WORST head possible, by far.

Also, the guy has a 260 cam and a pair of DGV's. He didn't say I'm building an all out race motor, money is no object, what should I use. Search and there are many threads about the different heads and their pros and cons. For a street car on 91 pump gas easiest thing to do is get an N42. Not as easy but better is to get a P90 and shave it and put N42 valves in it. If you're going racing I like the MN42. But if you aren't it's going to be more of a headache to get ready since you'll need to install bigger valves and seats, etc.

What kind of gas do you have out there in AZ 1 fast z? Cause in CA that sucker will ping regardless of how it's tuned. Oxygenated 91 octane is not the same as some other states with "real" 93 octane.
  22. Here's another site with lap times and a bunch of videos, but it doesn't have the X5 video: http://www.supercarfreak.net/forum/showthread.php?t=119
