  1. With dished pistons and N47 you'll have 8.3:1 and big valves, with E31 you'll have small valves and 8.5:1 compression. Just use the N47.
  2. The E88s all had mechanical fuel pumps AFAIK, because they came on 71-74 cars, which all had carbs. If I'm wrong, then just use an electronic fuel pump and just don't worry about the mechanical fuel pump. If you take a picture of the E88 we can tell you if it is the small chamber (will give you about 8.5:1 compression, same as an E31) or the open chamber (8.3:1 compression with the dished pistons). Either way it's not going to be a very high compression engine. You should be able to run 87 octane NO PROBLEM. Really doesn't sound like an E88 to me though. Have you SEEN it, or is someone telling you what it is? Have you got the L-series engine calculator? That would really help you about now...
  3. That thing looks like it dropped a valve and they just stuck a new valve in and put the head back on to me. I've seen engines put holes in the piston from detonation and the chamber didn't look that bad. If that happened from detonation that was a lot of detonation for a long time. The E88s all came with carbs. Even if you had a FI head, SUs bolt right up, so no worries. If you use an E31 head on an L28 with flat top pistons you'll be really detonation prone already (ask me how I know) and any sharp edges in the combustion chamber are going to have to be dealt with. You'll have to have that chamber welded up and then reground by hand, very expensive. Get another head is the answer to this one. I'm assuming that is the L24 block, if so no big deal, basically all that stuff is junk and you start over. If that is the L28 you could probably bore it and put new pistons in it, but a machinist could tell you for sure.
  4. If you do decide to go the exhaust route Mr Gasket has a setup that is about 1/2 the price of the Moroso stuff.
  5. The Iron Law of Revolution: Never take everything away from a people because then they have nothing to lose. I think we'd end up in WWIII (if we aren't already).
  6. In theory this isolationist stuff is great (right up my alley actually), but I don't know how well it would turn out in practice. I have to think that it is too dangerous to ignore festering terrorist groups around the world, especially now that North Korea has nukes and missiles capable of delivering them to the US. Securing the borders is fine, but we better get Bush's missile defense thing working and in place before we just seal up the borders and turn a blind eye to the rest of the world. The other big problem would be the economic ramifications of isolationism, although I think America is particularly well equipped to make an isolationist stand against the rest of the world. We certainly have better resources at our disposal than most other countries. Better get working on those hydrogen fuel cell cars... I think if we went 1/2 way towards isolationism from the current "get into everyones' business" policy that would be a good thing. Certainly getting our troops out of places where they aren't even appreciated, like Germany, would be a good thing. But as much as I hate to say it, I think totally disengaging from the rest of the world would be a huge mistake. Just trying to be somewhat realistic.
  7. I need one of those shirts!!!
  8. Ricky, if you use the good gaskets and not the cork ones, then you don't have to replace them every time you take the valve cover off. I've even taken to siliconing mine to the valve cover and putting a super thin layer of anti-seize on the head side so that it comes off easily. I've had the same gasket on there for probably 5 years now.
  9. As far as getting the lettering silver again I used sandpaper on mine.
  10. Yes, unless you turn 18 before Nov 2nd.
  11. Michael Badnarik. While I'm sure I disagree with at least 1/2 of what he says, it's gotta be better than Bush or Kerry for me.
  12. A friend of mine had a '69 Z number 472. The car was repainted in the original color and had 2 small rust holes, one in the door and one in the floorpan. It had under 60K original miles. When she put it on ebay I listed it here, on the IZCC list, on zcar.com, and at classiczcars.com. It eventually sold (not on ebay) for $6K. I don't know if I could have advertised somewhere else, but I was sure that that car would bring 9 or 10 grand. Maybe JeffP got lucky, but these cars just aren't worth that much IME.
  13. That is the last thing I am. I guess you don't read the Non-Tech Board political crap too often... It's another case of not wanting to do the dirty work (or not being able to). Reagan wanted to cut spending, but the Congress wouldn't go along with it. I'm not sure what Bush is thinking. Maybe he realizes that he'll never get re-elected if he even mentions cutting back govt jobs and services. We wouldn't be in this predicament if it weren't for FDR though, I can tell you that. I'm guessing that I would be an attractive candidate to all of about 5 people who live out in the boonies in Montana.
  14. How about something a little more subtle. Maybe a real light mist of pepper spray as I say "I'll be right there" and don't open the door for a minute or two...
  15. RCNSC- I have compiled the following quote from YOU. YOU said all of these things according to a Michael Moore mindset, and it's up to the reader to judge. I have cleverly arranged them to show you what deceit is all about. This is not intended to offend anyone, just show what is possible:
  16. Here on planet Earth we call that LYING. He presents his movie as a DOCUMENTARY. You may find fault with the moviegoers for believing the movie as it is presented. I find fault with Moore for presenting it in a fallacious manner (as in not true, a lie, etc) and then calling it a documentary. Definition of documentary from dictionary.com: YES I would rather see Bush in office! I don't think Bush is as dumb as the media makes him out to be. Not MENSA material, but certainly not stupid. Kerry on the other hand is everything I don't want in a politician. A tax and spend democrat. There is nothing worse to my mind short of outright socialists or communists, which is really only a step to the left. You wanna talk sincerity, how about Kerry? Have you heard him talk about lowering gas prices? Did you know that he's voted to raise gas taxes 10 times as a Senator? Where's the sincerity? Is it possible that Kerry is not altruistic? Kerry's out shooting a gun for the media. I'm betting last time that happened he was up for re-election. Kerry might not get the eucharist because of his stance on abortion... oh no... probably the first eucharist he'd had in 6 years too! Somehow conservatives have gotten the label of greedy and democrats have avoided it. The truth of the matter is that big business runs the one side, and labor unions and lawyers runs the other side. They're both corrupt as hell. I think that's why I run so libertarian in my views. Take this crap out of the govt's hands, then they won't have the power to f it up.
  17. OK RCNSC, how about disproving 56 inaccuracies (and no, I haven't checked them, but they sound very similar to the Bowling for Columbine inaccuracies, a lot of which I did check): http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1164856/posts
  18. Since everyone seems to agree that there are foreign nationals in Iraq now, I don't think that Iraq is a hindrance to the war on terror. It's like the Tora Bora thing. More guys kept coming from Pakistan, and the American generals were saying "Great! Keep em coming!" Easier for you to come to us for your big ol helping of death than for us to come to you. Obviously less good to fight the battles in a city, but I think it's pretty common consensus that there are Islamic militants in Iraq. That's not true. Do a little research. Plus, my basic theory was that the government shouldn't be providing a lot of the services it does, but when they do, AND they are horribly expensive and inefficient, then they should return those services to the private sector. The US is once again leading the fight against the Sudan in the UN, and once again the UN is not playing along. I heard last week we backed down some too. Strotter, the problem with your argument is that if we invaded all of the places that are hostile to us and were fomenting terror at the same time we would be WAY overextended, and if the American public can't even take the losses we've had in Iraq there is no way in hell they're going to step up to attack another 10 countries. It's an often heard argument from the left that we're in the wrong place (I don't know your political persuasion) but the unsaid part of the leftist argument is that we shouldn't be in ANY of those places. Kerry said a while back that terrorism is a law enforcement issue. Not in my book. That would be like taking care of a hornets' nest not by attacking the nest, but by carrying a fly swatter and killing them as they land on you.
  19. Well I ordered my sign: No solicitors No proselytizing (Bible thumping didn't fit) No donation seeking No selling stuff I'll put it up and take a pic for you all when it comes in. Will it stop them? I'm thinking not. We shall see. If this house weren't a rental I'd put a damn fence up with a No Trespassing sign.
  20. What is the f'in deal??? I have a NO SOLICITOR sign on my front door. Salesman, zealots, charity people, pundits, and every other persuasion of freak is CONSTANTLY KNOCKING ON MY DOOR! What's more every single one of them says "I'm not a solicitor" with the exception of the one guy who actually said to my face, "If I let a little sign like that stop me, where am I going to get in life?" They have to realize when they see the sign that I'm NOT buying anything from them. They just have to. I'm so pissed I'm heading down to Staples right now to see if I can get the following signs made: "No selling stuff" "No proselytizing/Bible thumping" "No political donation seekers" These stupid f#cks have pissed me off for the last time! This has been slowly bringing my blood to a boil since I've moved to Seattle. F'IN SEATTLE!!!
  21. No problem. You've just been asking more questions I know the answer to as of late.
  22. Should bolt right up, but you need to use the pressure plate and the throwout bearing collar from the same car. Use the 280 stuff or the 240 stuff, but don't mix and match. I'd use the 280 stuff because it has a slightly stronger pressure plate.
  23. http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/transmission.html IME for a N/A car the closer ratios are MUCH better than the lower 1st and 2nd gear. The gap from 2nd to 3rd is huge on the 4 speeds and early 5 speeds. Much better in the ZX 5 speed.
  24. I haven't really run into any limitations since buying Photoshop Elements 2.0. $100 and it does all I need. The full version is wasted on me, since I'm not a graphic designer.
