I would disagree with you that the founding fathers didn't want us to have artillery. After all, they had used the most advanced artillery they could get (brass cannons), along with the leading assault rifles of the day (flintlock musket) in the Revolutionary War from 1775-1783 to defeat the British before they had even established a legal right to bear arms. I would also argue that it seems unlikely that 145 million armed people can be trampled by 1.4 million armed forces. Huge assumptions are being made here, that everyone with a gun would get involved and be unified against the government, and that every person in the armed forces would directly oppose them, but hopefully I've made a point. The military is HUGELY outnumbered by the citizenry. In Iraq you've got 20,000 insurgents (last estimate I heard).

In terms of accidents in 1997 there were 41,200 automobile fatalities and 900 firearms fatalities due to accidents. In 1997 there were 10,369 gun related murders. So roughly a 4:1 ratio of auto to gun deaths. All of these statistics came from the internet, but I tried really hard to get DOJ and CDC type websites, and not JoeBob's Gun Statistics Site.

bottoming out suspension
JMortensen replied to BIGJIM's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
You can section the front and use 240Z front struts, but there isn't much to be done in the rear. You might be able to shave the bump stops (?) but that's about it back there. So if you can't get more travel by raising the car up, the next best thing would be to stiffen the springs and get shocks and struts to match. -
Simon is from Australia, so that may help explain his position. When you live in a country where there is statistically a gun in every other house, and enough guns in the country for every person to have 5 or 6, then removing them from society becomes impossible as RPMS said--that is assuming you wanted to remove them in the first place. Most of us here in the US don't want to remove guns from the hands of the average person. Our whole society is built around being rebels who threw off the yoke of tyranny, and our Bill of Rights was a necessary addition that was demanded before ratification of the Constitution. The job of our Bill of Rights is to state in specific terms what rights the government cannot take away from us. Gun ownership was second only to freedom of speech, religion, and the press, and clearly gun ownership is the only tool that we as citizens have to protect our First Amendment rights from abuses by our government. The reason that so many of us Americans value our right to gun ownership is that we understand the potential for tyranny to rise again, and if that were to happen we would need our guns to put it down again. There are so many other arguments that support gun ownership, and hopefully you'll hear more of them and maybe even change your mind like RPMS, but the central issue is and should be the Constitutional issue for Americans.

When I was having my head prepped at the machinist about 2 years ago he was looking for these for me and said either Crane or ISKY had them. Sorry can't remember which one it was. Also, checked recently at the local machine shop and found them here too, on the shelf as a matter of fact. I don't think they're hard to come by. EDIT--Also, if you need thicker just stack them.

four piston front brake question
JMortensen replied to dune333racing's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=19020&highlight=toyota+caliper+part+number Found this on my first search. Searched for "toyota caliper part number" and under Search for Keywords clicked on the button next to "Search for all terms". Maybe the "search for all terms" will help in future searches. When I searched without clicking the search for all terms, I got 8722 matches. With it clicked... just 2. -

My wife and I are the ONLY people my age (30ish) that I know that haven't ever smoked pot. While I was kinda hoping for some other really fast rally car stories on this thread, but since we're talking legalization, I do have something to say. If you're on the pro-legalization side of this one like me, PLEASE don't try to fool people by saying that marijuana is medicine. You can already be prescribed Marinol, which can be taken orally or anally (for those who want to use marijuana to stop nausea). A current drug example: you can't be prescribed opium to smoke, but you can get morphine and other similar drugs delivered in a "safer" manner through injections or IV or pills. ANYONE who has seen or heard someone with a good case of "bong lung" should know that marijuana in smoked form shouldn't be considered medicine. If it is going to give you emphysema, it probably shouldn't be considered "medicine". I for one am fine with the "I just want to get stoned and it's none of your damn business if I do or not" argument. We can get drunk legally, and there is nothing wrong with that, so I don't see anything wrong with getting stoned legally. I think the whole issue becomes ridiculous when people try to justify it as medicine. It just makes me feel like smacking someone when some hippie on the news with greasy hair jumps out of his 67 VW Van with the Greatful Dead sticker and the tie dye curtains telling us all what great medicine marijuana is. At least just own up to the fact that you want to smoke pot because you like to get high. At least I can respect the honest argument. -
It's the PowerBrute (rebadged Nissan) diff, not sure if its the Comp 75 lbs breakaway or the 45 lbs breakaway. If I had to bet, I'd say 75 lbs. I ***think*** the Nissan units are 1.5 way. Not entirely sure. I think if both sides of the cross pin shaft holes are V shaped, but the cross pin only has the v shape on one side, then it is a 1.5, and I think that is the way the Nissans are. I'm saying this based on an exploded view that Nissan Comp faxed me a couple weeks back. I'm about to tear into mine, but I haven't yet. I can verify all this when I get mine apart, but that might be a couple weeks.

Yeah, but the search box WAY at the top right doesn't work. -

Don't search using the box at the top of the screen. Click on forums, then seach right below the blue banner at the top. There is a little magnifying glass icon right next to the search that works. Mods, is it possible to REMOVE the search that doesn't work? Would sure save a lot of useless posts. -
Or you can get a 240SX lower rad hose out of a jy and use the fan switch out of it, turns the fan on at 205 and off at 195. EDIT--just realized this might be a bad idea as your rad hoses might be a different size than the Nissan hoses. Works great for L6 cars though...

I don't think Grumpy's criticisms are entirely fair: Moser 12 bolts come with 9" housing ends, which are made for bolt in axles. Couple that with a 33 spline axle and an Eaton posi or a spool, maybe a forged 1350 yoke and a TA cover with main cap braces and all of Grumpy's 12 bolt complaints should be taken care of. Stock 9" housings aren't that strong, both on the axle tubes and the 3rd member housing itself. For the 9 you'd need a nodular 3rd member, 33 or 35 spline axles, the forged yoke, a stronger pinion support, etc. You can build a 9" stronger than the Chevy no doubt about it, but they both have to be built to handle big power. The 9" is much easier to set up, but it has the disadvantage of the extremely low pinion height. I think I'd prefer the 12 bolt, unless I was running 1/8 and 1/4 mile, in which case the 9 would have the huge advantage of being able to swap 3rd members to gear for the different track length. Can't argue with the Dana 60 stuff though. That is one burly diff.

I had the same problem you guys are talking about when I went to 5* caster with 250/45/15 slicks, but I don't think that is your current problem demidion. With the G machine TC kit I had about 3* caster. I don't know how you'd get more than 3* with a stock TC rod. I would imagine that it would be pretty obvious if you had the camber adjusters in backwards because the TC joint would be really loose, and then when you tightened it down it would load the crap out of the control arm bushings and it probably wouldn't move very easily at all.

The pot test was lame. Can you maneuver a car at 3 mph while stoned? The surprising answer: Yes! You can! I'm not convinced that pot is too much of a problem when driving (had a couple of friends who were better faster mountain bike riders when stoned), but you need a test that is a little tougher than that. I coulda had 10 shots of Tuaca and aced that test at those speeds. Ahhh, that's her name. Cute and she can drive! And she's got that sexy accent... -
Why does the 280zx get such a bad rap? (Warning 56k)
JMortensen replied to zeeboost's topic in Non Tech Board
RCNSC--Those in glass houses should not throw stones REGAURDLESS of whether or not they can spell REGARDLESS. Bottom line, you don't see a lot of ZX race cars. If racing that requires any sort of handling is your thing, you're probably going to want a 240 (not a 260 or a 280 either). If not, it's more a personal preference thing than anything else. Personally I can see a lot of benefit to the heavier cars on the road, stiffer, fuel injected, quieter in the case of the ZX. Probably a lot safer in an accident too. Personally, if I were going to buy a Datsun with the ZX style suspension, it would be a 510. I've always liked the flying bricks. But that's just my take on it, and I'm a handling freak, not a boulevard cruiser. -
They had a Titan Lotus 7 kit car, street legal, and were going for the 0-60 record for street legal cars (in Europe anyway). They got it. 2.97 seconds!!! On low profile tires. Took the old record from the Ford Escort RS200 Evo from the early 80's. This 7 had twin 1200cc Kawasaki engines (I think they said 200 hp each) and they didn't use auto transmissions to make them work. They used 2 manual transmissions and had a split shifter so that you could shift gears together for both front and back, or you could shift just the front or just the back. They did blow one of the engines while trying to best the 2.97. Just amazing!!! Reminded me of my high school years. There was a guy in the building I worked in who had a LARGE collection of rally cars and stored them in one of the warehouses in the same complex. In particular I remember the Renault R5 Turbo II, and the RS200. His RS200 Evo was "not stock" and had an intercooler (roof mounted) that was about a foot thick and the full width of the car. It was a 2L, and he claimed it was pushing 800 hp. I asked him what the little lever next to the shifter was, and he said it was to shift from front wheel drive to all wheel drive or rear wheel drive, on the fly. The car was fly yellow with a skull and crossbones on the doors and hood. He claimed 1.9 0-60 times. I believed him. He also told me the story of buying the car, which required something like $400,000 (when it was "stock") when he bought it sometime in the late 80's and a trip to Germany where he was taught how to drive it. The new show is good, and it brought back fond memories of hyperfast AWD cars. Just had to share... I know I'm going to have fast dreams tonight. Jon

I had a friend with a diesel rabbit who had a sign that said F*** YOU!!! and when he was inevitably cut off he would grab it and shove it up against the window. He was also 6'5" and about 280 had a beard and a pony tail down to his butt, so when it did come down to getting out of the car, that's all he had to do. He got out, they got back in their car and drove away. He's lucky though, because in truth I coulda kicked his butt, and I'm not a tough guy at all. He was a very imposing looking wussy though... Personally though, I just quit my damn job and started my own biz so I can work from home. You have never experienced quite such an infuriating thing as driving in Seattle. Sure there are a lot of cars, but there is just enough room on the road so that everyone SHOULD be able to keep moving. But they don't, because they're morons. AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGH!!! :twak: I think that's why my project has been moving so slowly. It's not even fun to drive around this poophole. Stupid idiots don't turn left on yellow. They merge with the brake. They drive the same speed as the slow jackass next to them on two lane roads. The semis drive in the fast lane on the freeway. The left turn lanes at stoplights are good for about 10 cars, and usually the first car takes about 7 seconds to get through the intersection, then the ones behind hit the brakes as they get to the intersection, cause hey, you wouldn't want to go around a turn at 20 mph! Did I mention AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!! Yeah, so my answer is stay home...

Theoretical long rod turbo L-series, L26ET?
JMortensen replied to Drax240z's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
I'm missing something. If the block would be 19mm taller, then presumaby the plate would also be 19mm tall. How are the piston rings going to pass over from the block to the plate. Seems like a recipe for ring failure. I don't think you'd want a piston with 20mm height to the first ring either, since you'd then have a really low pin height on that piston, which is also something to be avoided. What am I missing? Jon -
They aren't approved for racing.

Yeah, the STOCK ones like a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord. SHO-Z was talking about hot rod "Attack Honda" body kits and such.

worth the extra cost or not?

I'd rather adjust camber on top and caster at the TC rod. That way you get more fine tuning of both. -
Half-assed to first class... i hope, whatcha think?
JMortensen replied to a topic in Body Kits & Paint
I've never really noticed what people do with those huge holes on the sides, but this guy stuck a bumper on to cover it up. I always thought that was a sweet kit (only seen 2 in person, both very cool looking race cars), but it seems to me you'd want the front fender vented and the rear not, and the kit looks to be built the other way around...
