Restrictive exhaust flow was corrected on work done at RIO VISTA MUFFLER by Bob Lapp. Tha collectors were lowered, frame rail notched and reinforced, and pipe diameter increased. I hope everyone realizes that the cold start valve and the thermotime switch work together in a cold engine start condition. The thermotime switch is on when the cooling water temp. is between 57 to 77 degrees F. It sends a signal to open the cold start valve which causes fuel to be injected into the intake manifold independently of the injector operation so that the engine starts smoothly during cold weather. If either one of them is not working you will get the stumble and stall condition until the engine is warm. LARRY

Thanks for the comments.... This is a great engine and tranny. The engine is a heavy duty 4-bolt block with Ductile iron caps. It's balanced and blueprinted, bored and honed with torque plates, block resurfaced/equal decked, line honed with ARP studs. Forged steel crankshaft 3.480 stroke, forged TRW blower pistons 4.030/ plasma-moly rings. ENGLE custom hyd. roller cam, special 441 Chevy heads/ ported and polished, stainless valves, bronze guides/hardened exh. seats and Z28 springs. TH350 trans with 2200 stall conv./ furnaced brazed, balanced with Torrington needle bearings and Raybestos blue metallic clutches. Transgo shift kit. I stomped it in first gear the other day and scared the HELL out of myself. I think I'll leave it in drive for now........ Gas mileage????? Don't care........ LARRY

I agree 100% with dr hunt. I broke the front diff mount and the shaft went up and beat the HELL out of the emergency brake assm. The rear end came loose at another time ( long story) and the shaft went up and did the same thing....DAMN. the saving grace was that the fuel lines are routed along the frame rails. There is no way I would route them through that tunnel..JMO LARRY

Dyno run video in the video section of the Gallery. This was a nice increase after fixing the restrictive flow from my headers. The collector was lowered into a horizonal pipe position and the frame rail was notched for the increased pipe diameter to the sidepipe. Next is a pulley change to go from 6lbs to 10lbs boost. I'm glad my R-230 is sitting in the garage. LARRY

The best answer is the detailed instructions in the FSM which btw in the 1980 manual says to use a rag dampened with unleaded gasoline to remove the butyl sealant. LARRY

Good idea but getting the correct info together and doing it might be a big task. Take the drivetrain forum for example, what does a R-230 look like and what cars do they come in and what other parts do you need for a conv. and what needs to be done to the stock DATSUN for it to fit.....DAMN. People say search.... well I've read the whole forum and when you've done that, you still can be confused. Lucky for me I know I've got a R-230 but I'm finding out the longer I wait the more that things are posted about mods that have to be made for proper fitment. Also it would be nice to have a year,model, and diff. column for all the Z's. Just my .02 cents!!!!!! LARRY

In the 280ZX EFI system the fuel pump relay-1 will shut off, if the alternator fails and the oil pressure drops, in the on position and shut the fuel pump off. In the "start" position with no alt. generation and no oil pressure the fuel pump relay-1 is on and the fuel pump is on. LARRY
