The heads are stock LS1 cores that Dave williams cleaned up, ported and then stuck larger valves in. They are now carrying 2.02/1.57 valves. The cam is the Thunder Racing 224/224 114LSA. I wanted it to be able to pass emissions. With the other "stuff" and the 10.5:1 cr, We're expecting the all motor combo to be a low 12 second/ high 11 second setup on street tires, and to turn somewhere around 400WHP and about 380-390#ft. of torque. This is a very common combo and most guys with the same parts are turning closer to 430HP, but I'll be pleased if the WHP hits 400! The head work and how well it was done will be the limiting factor. The other bits are LGM long tube headers, 3 inch custom exhaust (With SLP Cats), LS6 intake with Z06 injectors, Ported Shaner Tbody, CAI and a Custom LS1 edit on the PCM. Bottom end is forged Ross Pistons and Eagle Hbeam rods on the stock crank. Everything was balances internally and blueprinted. It idles perfect and runs great in rushhour Washington DC traffic. I'm very pleased with this car now... Mike

Thanks Guys... It passed the ultimate test of Washington DC traffic this afternoon. I get such a rush driving this thing... And lots of attention... I've owned this car for almost two years and it just is soooo enjoyable to drive. The cam and heads have added more mechanical sound to the drivetrain, as have the forged bottom end, but nothing I can't deal with. The power hits a little different than the stock setup did, and I know I need the tune cleaned up. Jeff ran it a bit rich for breakin. This thing is docile, idles in traffic, knocked down 24.7 MPG going into work, and is superbike quick when you mash the pedal and row the gears. I'm very impressed and would actually be surprised if my wheel HP numbers are below 400 on the final cleanup tune. Mike

Lewis, I had a Mustang once as well... SHould never have sold it... WOulda made a nice track car! Seriously, after owning something around 18 Zcars since 1987, I like getting into other makes and models. I'm a car guy first. I still have a Zcar burried in that garage somewhere, I think! Mike

Pete, I hope you get it back together for the November date. I may be able to make that date. I'm calling tomorrow to see if a slot is available... Donna has me on a leash while we set up the company, so spending is gonna be at a premium for a while... Mike

What will fit under a stock hood?
Mikelly replied to HarrisonTX's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Check here to see the setup from JIm's car with what amounts to A Voctor Jr. Intake with a custom air horn for FI... http://photos.yahoo.com/dat74z and click on the red Zcar... I also used the Ramairbox.com unit on my Victor Jr./ BG Demon Carburetor combo under the stock hood.. just be sure to get the drop base design! Mike -
Well way back when I was 20 (1986) this little company came out to the Federal Law Enforcement Academy, all the way from Smirna, Ga. (FLETC is in Brunswick...Short drive) and they let us play with all their plastic guns at the range... I've owned nothing but their plastic guns since... I'm a GLOCK fan! 'Course, right now I'm looking at Taurus 5 shot stubby colt 45 revolver... When it comes to wheel guns, I'm a fan of Taurus and S&W. Mike

...And NO, this isn't a religious thread... So 12 weeks have come, and twelve weeks have gone... FINALLY I've got a C5 Corvette that idles on its own and DOES NOT throw a bunch of codes. I got to drive this car 80 miles this evening, romping on it at times, and it did everything well... No more TCS codes, no 02 sensor codes and no leaks anywhere... this is the first motor that hasn't required something to be resealed or retightened... Did I mention it is LOUD and goes like stink? Can't wait until the race rings seal up and she is at full compression! And now to those who have commented about "corvette" owners who buy a C5 and never get their fingers dirty... To date I've replaced: Stock stereo unit and system with a custom component system (1200 Watts) Stock shocks and sway bars with Z06 units Stock Differential Z06 unit Stock Clutch Hydraulics with Z06 unit Stock cooling system with Z06 unit Stock Clutch with Z06 unit Stock exhaust with LGM full length headers and 3 inch exhaust Refurbished the Torque tube Replaced the suspension uprights Installed an oil cooler Installed brake ducting and upgraded the brake system's bleeders lines and pads... and finally installed this new drivetrain, including the new Heads/cam forged shortblock motor. I'll have dyno numbers in another 3-4 weeks. My hands are dirty, cut and bruised, and I'm tired and glad this one is in the books... So no more wise cracks 'bout those gold chain wearing tools who claim to be "car" guys! Mike

The book and this site and you're golden... I only had the book the first time around... took me 4 months to get everything in and another 4 months to debug... This site causes prolonged projects, due in large part to the creativity and BAR RAISING of the members... more than one "summer project" have been extended YEARS! Mike

THat's the way I'm going. The Q45 is similar, but not exactly like the R230 from the 300ZX. You can use either, but the Q45 has a better gear # for most of us... I think the R230s are running deeper in the 3's to low 4's on the gearing. Ask Tim240Z about his Stubaxle research or contact Ross Corrigan and price his setup... Mike

I don't... Deep six the broad... I'd be the biggest humanitarian, if but for the people. Mike

GForce and 5Speeds part company and I'm left without a trans...

We got Jim McNemar's Car running with his and it shifts slick as snot on a door knob! The HOWE hydraulic release bearing is another issue. Last time I talked with Jim, it had puked all its fluids out and JIm was a tad bit upset... The installer/ builder had found paperwork with the unit that specified the Hydraulic release bearing wasn't designed for anything BUT stock applications... my direction was to CALL HOWE to get clarification... He did not, and isntalled it instead of sending it back and getting the McLeod Unit instead... I went the TKO600 route instead and I haven't installed it yet... All my money for the project went to the Huricane relief fund, so I won't be completing my project until Early Spring If at all... Mike -
Yup, welded gears aren't street friendly at all... Here's the deal, Traub83 you're throwing down a lot of torque and you'll be into swapping out axles before long. I'd to a CV axle swap, and go with a built R200 OR get the Q45 parts and do that swap. The whole system needs to be upgraded... Do a search and you'll see that pretty much anything above 300HP and your axles become the issue over time. Mike

best rear end ratio to use with 383?
Mikelly replied to JoeinCA's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Really also depends on the usage... My 383 stroker had a T56 backing it and 6th was useless. However, I think the TKO600 with the road race gearing is really going to be nice in my car. It'll tach pretty high, but I'm road coursing the car... If I had it to do over again, I'd build a 355 Chevy SB and go for more revs and less torque. It's fun blowing off the tires shifting from 3-4 at 100MPH, but I'd prefer to hook up and GO!!! My new build will have the Q45 Diff, with 3.54 gears, 26inch tire combo, and the TKO 600 with road race gearing. Good luck! Mike -
Snapon sells the metric Dies to rethread them... I ordered a couple.. one for myself and one for Michael O. a while ago. Forgot the part number, but you can order a die from them in the right (I think it is a 20MM) thread and clean them up... Or get a file... Mike

Here's a problem with the ignore list... Regardless of what you MAY think of some members because of your personal, religious, or political beliefs, Some of those who may not be favorites of yours COULD potentially post some nuggets that are truly worthwhile for your project, or troubleshooting needs. Start throwing people on your ignore list and you might just miss those little nuggets. I'd have a list WAY TO BIG if I used the ignore feature... Reality is that some of those we admins would like to ignore are just the ones that "need" watching... So no ignore list for me... Just remember that ingoring some will not always work to your advantage. We've got one of the absolute BEST sites on the web guys... Use common sense and police yourselves. If there are "personal" issues, work them offline with the member who you have issues with... more often than not, they won't know they have offended you. Mike

Has any one actually tried making there own flares out of metal?
Mikelly replied to AK-Z's topic in Body Kits & Paint
I wish one of you guys would try the corvette rear suspension as well... C5 parts are reasonably cheap and plentiful! The rears are pretty damned strong too! SBC400, those flares are simply awesome! Mike -
I've got some new 02 sensors, and for those who need sensors with longet lead wires for their LS1s, Go to Advance, get their Bosch replacements for the "downstream" units and check the box... They have their catalog reversed... Pull the 02s out of the box and you should find a sensor with about 24 inches of lead and the square four pin connector. I also found that THREE wires pulled out of the connector block on the ABS system. I have to remove the pins they were connected to and reconned them to the pics, then re-insert them into the blocks. Once all this is done, I'll be able to drive this thing "CODE" free, I hope! Mike

A little common sense goes a long way guys... If it is offensive in any way, or unsafe for some audiences, it should have a warning... We're drafting a rule right now... MIke

I'd be concerned the thing would sling a rod through the block. That motor is doing a good job pushing that box around as is... Probably close to maxed out when you think about it. My son's 90 Civic hatch has a 1.5 Liter in it stock and that motor isn't much, and having rebuilt it once, You really see how fragile that motor is by looking at those tiny rod ends. Bet the Xb is the same. Low buck and low tech was the goal. Mike

Mike, Didn't you have a line on an old M3??? That would be the ticket! For stealth, Yea, An older Maxima Ala Uncle Bens fried RICE would do the snooker trick. Mike -
Traub83, Sorry for the heavy handed "This isn't free speech" tone above. Your post count hinted that you might be new, and we have to give that speech to newbees sometimes. We've got a great site here. Unfortunately, we even get things wrong sometimes. Keeping topic content centered aroung humor and cars, and stupid people tricks keeps it less offensive in general. Mike

Well my excuse was that I opened it to see if I was gonna have to lock or delete it! My story, and I'm sticking to it... Mike

Yes some of us do! ! In a perfect world we could all express our views and all have them accepted without offending others for possesing these views. Unfortunately we aren't in a perfect world. I think we are better off without any discussion related to both topics. Personally, that gives finite bounds for all to follow. Otherwise, there is to much unknown grey area for some to wiggle through to start "topics" that might burn to hot! ...And that could be a lot more work for the mods and admins. Mike
