But ya can't talk about drummers without mentioning buddy rich http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYpR5iw9F1M

I was going through my old car vids a couple months ago and came across thier skyline drag run vids and the dyno vids... Happy times. I still doubt ANY single person could relicate how much power that skyline makes. Unless you own/run a machine shop with tons of race engine experience it just isn't happening that easily. The owner mentioned himself that they'd done extensive headwork to get the head to cool better and that heat was one of the main issues they'd always run into with the RB motors. So go ahead, hack up your skyline heads to cool better and see how it turns out 8) And adrianZ, sure the HKS kit would make your bottom end much more suitable and capable but i've never see any skyine close to the kind of power this skyline is pushing on anything close to a street setup. I think the highest HP RB26 I've seen that was daily driven was around 1000 wheel hp, wich is about 750 kW. This RB26 blew the lid off that.

No offence, but please search. This topic is a sticky is so popular. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=91250 It's written out for turbo cars so there will be some differences.

Today was fairly productive. I got the rest of the front end body off and got all the efi off. So there's not much left to hold the engine in now other than mounts and the driveshaft. But the real treat today was my uninvited guest... I pull of the fender and yay! He's there saying "man, who turned the lights on?" In this confusement I had time to snap a shot and then sweep in for the kill. (no spider sympathy here) If anyone knows what it is feel free to chime in. Tomorrow will be getting the last bits i don't need out of the engine bay and possibly pull the motor. Well see how much time i've got since i'm busy in the morning and evening leaving just my afternoon free.

Yea i'm trying to get this project finished in 3 weeks, and no later than weeks. I want to give myself lots of time to do all the wiring/guage conversions. And the motor is fairly clean, it was even recently painted so degrease work will go quickly. My main thing will be getting my NA car's engine bay clean once I pull the motor. I'm also thinking I'll keep the NA motor around so I can build up the bottom end so I can later pull the turbo motor and run the turbo head and up on the rebuilt block. Basically just keep it around to make a rebuild go smoother with less down time.

Ahh, the beauty of ebay. That sucks man, I've had that happen too many times. Auctions should never be about stealing a bid from someone. I think i'm gonna go with this BOV once I get around to installing a fmic & bov. https://935motorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_63&products_id=52 Here's a vid with the same type of bov on a RB motor. http://www.935motorsports.com/media05/turboxsBOV.mpeg I like how quiet it is. It also seems effetively simple. I often question how well some of the mid priced ones work, beucase they all seem to be so focused on the sound. I'm personally a fan of form following function, not the other way around. Hope all goes well with your BOV hunting. EDIT: Changed the first link to the recerculating model.

Interesting, didn't realise about the t-tops, i knew about the rest. Thanks bleach. Well, The car is purring away now and here's what was involved in today's work. So I went out there today and started it to double check the injectors. #4&6 weren't firing. Remove those plugs and no change of idle but unplug any other plug and the revs go down the way it sound. So maybe it's the connectors? So I sprayed them down with some electrical cleaner (non-flamable) and let it sit after a good scrubbing. Still nothing. So I test the voltage, it's perfect, identical to the other injectors. Well it couldn't be a clog since #4 is getting fuel apparently. #4 had been changed and #6 hadn't... So if it's not a fuel issue, then a spark issue? I check to see if it arcs, and it does. So I pull the plug and it's pretty black. Change over 2 plugs from my NA and voila it runs perfect. It was probly plugs the entire time I guess. So now it starts great, revs quickly, runs smoother, and most of all sounds great (for a stock car). Maybe I'll even make a vid of it running before I start taking it apart. Tomarrow the real fun begines. Tear down. I'm gonna keep a digital camera handy and take lots of pictures.

hahaha, that's great. We should have just swapped cars! I've already got a spare set of t-tops. I plan on keeping as much as I can store for spare parts, but stuff like the interior (it's red) I just wanna sell off for cheep. So one of the injectors was bad, and the previous owner thought it was #5, so I changed it out today for my NA injector (i'm gonna replace all of them once I finish the swap, but I figured the na injector would be close enough until then since I just wanted to get the thing running well before I swapped it out). Now a smart man would have tested all the injectors with the car running first... Now that i've changed the #5 #4 isn't working, so I'm thinking it was probly that one the entire time. Oh well. So now i've got my project laid out for tomorrow. I'm glad to get inside today though, bitter wind out today. I also got a change to check some other things, like the windshield wipers... wich suck. Motor must be near dead or something. That's ok becuase I didn't really need it. I want to swap it out for something else eventually anyways.

Yea there's a local yard with a 2 seater turbo 280ZX with an auto tranny. But no car stays at that yard more than a month and it's been there about a week so far so it might be gone around the time i'm finishing up. So far my parts needed are: Speed sensor sending unit Driveshaft Not too bad, and I think anything else I need is here (the car runs and drives).

Good ol' BMI. Yea it's an older vid of thiers but it's still fun to watch. I think amuse does a much better job with ther S2000 cars than thier supra cars. And look at the rpm drop between the two cars. Either the skyline has a much higher gear ratio or it's got some ultra close ratio gears (wich is less likely). The most amazing thing about the skyline is it's responce on and off throttle and during shifts. It's absolutely lightning quick and doesn't lag at all. With the gearing the way it is it doesn't hesitate at all. I'm sure this is a combined effect of all the things done to the car, not just the gearing, or just the engine mods, ect. The supra definately has power but it just doesn't seem to come on the same way, although the supra has a lower RPM band it would be interesting to see the two car's hp curves side by side. It seemed as though after shifts the supra was farther out of it's peak power than the skyline. Although this might all be very obvious, i'm just stating it all for the sake of redundancy. Both cars a bit extreme and I'd love to have either of them. Would I buy one? Probly not, but that doesn't mean they're not cool

What might seem like an ordinary fence: Might really only hide something else, as appearences can be deciving. So I spent a good 3 hours today pulling fences and then putting them back up. At least I got a good work out. Both cars fit with about 6 inches between each gap (fence to bumper, front bumpers, last bumper to shed). So that should be enough room to work once I get all the bumpers taken off of both cars and both of them backed up as far as they'll go. Tomarrow the real fun beigns.

gee thanks Man, if I go down there again this week it'll have to be for more than a driveshaft at this point. Maybe we should schedule a little san jose meet or something.

Ok, so I picked up a nice donor car today. From a member on this board actually (2 years and I've finally got something to show for all the time i've spent here). I'm pleased with it and I feel it'll make a perfectly good drivetrain donor. Many new'ish' parts on it. Clutch is overzelous and i'll have to relearn how to drive a ZX. I guess I was just used to all the z trannys i've driven that are about as soft as free baked cookies. So, the plan is to get it running real good before I start the swap, then just do the engine swap. I'll try to clean my engine bay the best that I can, and if I've got the time/money I'll do a quick paint job. Then once I've got the drivetrain in I need to get it working. I'll probly convert all the electronics over wich means pulling the dashes on both cars (yay... not. oh wel, it is what it is) then I'll be using a strang assorment of hybrid parts between the two cars. My dash, with the new turbo guage faces, with the new turbo plastic. Once everything is sorted out and working I'll divide it all into weekend projects. Like the front end. Sanding/painting hood/fenders/bumpers and so forth. The car has red interior, and the seats are in particularly good shape. I might convince myself to turn one into a video game racing seat unless someone wants to offer me a good price for them. It is obviouly a 2+2 and the rear seats seem primo to me, though I've only had my glances at it thus far. Real test will be once I pull them out and inspect them in detail. So if there is anything you want, let me know and I'll let you know if I plan on keeping it. A very large portion of this car I plan on keeping, but i'm sure there are some odds and ends that I surely won't need. But in the end once i've got it stripped I'll offer the chassis and if there's no interest in a 2+2 I'll cut it into pieces and recycle it (sorry ray (previous owner) if you like we can hold a memorial BBQ in it's honor) Although before I do anything rash like that I want to measure the rear extensively and figure out the weight distrobution of the bare chassis, to see if there is any realistic ability to turn it into a MR car (albit a bit extreme custom work to get it there) So much like the similar thred that I patterned the title of this thred after, I'll be using this thred to catalog all the work done to the car. First pic: Sitting at it's new home. So that's it for now, it's been a long day and it's going to be an early morning.

Good idea larry, now that's thinkin'. I'll give them a call tomarrow.

Here's the car, it's a T-5 2+2 http://classifieds.hybridz.org/showproduct.php?product=2292&cat=12 In that link you posted he says he thinks the 2+2 turbo only came with an auto but then he later talks about the clutch from the 2+2 turbo cars...??? Odd.

Thanks for the input, but I called nearly all of them until one told me that the only place that had them was fremont. It doens't bother me much. Concord is closer, but fremont is more on the way, concord is the opposite direction for me.

Hey rustrocket, your mailbox is full

Ok, so i've got some questions (wich my manual doesn't answer) How many different driveshafts came in the ZX cars? Did the 2+2 have a longer driveshaft? (i'm unsure of the wheelbase difference) and did the turbo models have a different drivesahft? If both of those are yes then that means they had to have 4 different length varieties. The reason I ask is that I'm buying a 2+2 turbo and i'll be droping the drivetrain into my NA ZX 2 seater. I guess I just need to know if one of the two driveshafts will work. If not there's a 280ZXT at pnp and I can pull the shaft from that. But i'll be going there wednesday so I'd need to know before that.

If you've done all that you should definately be feeling a difference over stock. It sounds like something is wrong to me. I'm sure others here would have a better idea though, so let them chime in before freaking out.

They peterrallyman, did you happen to weight the engine at all by any chance? If you did do you know what exactly was/wasn't on the motor. All the figures on the net are a mystery as to what the mtor really weighs becuase they don't tell you what the motor had installed at the time. I've been under the impression that a bare long block was right around 400 pounds. Any insight?
-
Well I found a place in fremont willing to rent to me by the name of cresco. Not a bad price either $42 I'll be heading down tomarrow morning. Thanks everyone for the help. Hopefully pics wil follow soon.

Well I don't have AAA, my mom used to but i'm not sure about it anymore. I'll check and if so I guess we chould just say it's her car or something. I dunno. I'm seriously thinking about driving down there and getting it to a drivable condition and driving it back.

Thanks for the recomendation. If I find something I'll update this thred.

"No officer this isn't a drag car... Those skinny tires help me turn that little front end better... yea... right... that's it..." Looks freakin' sweet. Now why don't I see RX7's like THAT on the road. Oh yea, becuase most people are purists
-
Now if only someone would make&sell aluminium blocks for the L motors... I like the project though. Rotaries belong in race cars, where they're at home. Not in street cars pushing 200k between rebuilds. If a motor is gonna be finicky let it be finicky at the track Now, what else can we fit in RX7s? I see them all to often in the junkyards, wich reminds me... Brandon - If somene showed me running pics of a FB I'd be pleasantly suprised. I see 10 dead FB RX7s for every 1 running one I see.
