Thanks for the recomendation. If I find something I'll update this thred.

"No officer this isn't a drag car... Those skinny tires help me turn that little front end better... yea... right... that's it..." Looks freakin' sweet. Now why don't I see RX7's like THAT on the road. Oh yea, becuase most people are purists

Now if only someone would make&sell aluminium blocks for the L motors... I like the project though. Rotaries belong in race cars, where they're at home. Not in street cars pushing 200k between rebuilds. If a motor is gonna be finicky let it be finicky at the track Now, what else can we fit in RX7s? I see them all to often in the junkyards, wich reminds me... Brandon - If somene showed me running pics of a FB I'd be pleasantly suprised. I see 10 dead FB RX7s for every 1 running one I see.

I saw two spitfires at the jy today. I sat in one and though "hmm... don't get side swiped" All in all I think they're cool cars, and that's an awsome project.

Hey everyone, first off I wanna say uhaul and hertz suck... Now onto buisness. Apparently an explorer can't tow a vehicle dolly becuase it's "not heavy enough" though it fits the towing criteria (05' model with the optional tow package with a class 3 hitch). Whatever. So I brought a F150 down, they won't take that either because "it's a bumper not a frame attached hitch" even though the bumper tow rating meets the requirements. I was talking to a manager so I just left, then hertz told me the same thing, but with more polite wording and more understanding about how upset I was. I think they're just trying to get people to rent trucks from them. So why was I needing to rent a vehicle dolly? Becuase I'm buying a 280ZXT from a member on hybrid Z down in the gilroy area. So I come here to plead to hybrid Z members. I'm a stand up guy. I'll pay ya for gas, I'll even guy ya a meal. Can anyone here in the bay area help me out? The car is currently non-op and is having some injector/fi issues. For the price of renting a truck & dolly I could drive down there, fix the problem, AND register it for less money. Plus gas would be cheeper since I wouldn't be in a truck. Again, if anyone can help out it any way I'd greatly apreciate it.

Plus if he doesn't run an intercooler he could spin the turbo far beyond it's efficiancy and heat up his intake air, thus forcing detonation... Look, zlovemachine, I'm not offended and I said what I said. You say it's reliable and it might be... ...in a sence. But please don't cry once you break something. Yes I've worked with nitruous, and yes I've had good and bad experiences. As of now I'm of the belief that if you want and good stable and usable power gains from nitrous a motor should be built for it. On a stock motor it's really only good for 1/4 bragging rights. (nothing wrong with that though)

^^^ Words to live by people. Don't let them fall on deaf ears. Enojy the drive and enjoy it enough to see the next one.

I'm getting my ZXT tomarrow! I'm stoked too man. I'm just doing a straight swap in so maybe we'll finish about the same time. Keep it up man.
-
Nos = On or off power that runs out Anyone who thinks nos is a reliable power source to depend on probly hasn't spent any time at the track Please don't take offtence tothis 510six, beucase I think nitrous is perfectly fine, it shoud just be used as a way to reach a desired HP.

semi off topic - how is that mountain drive? I don't really head that far south very often. I usually drive bear creek/wild cat canyon wich isn't in very good shape in some areas. I like alhambra valley rd too but it didin't like winter last year and there's lots of residential areas in there and I don't like to disturb people.

it's cool moby. I'm just stating that 'I' like to overbuild things as I stated. Why build a bottom end and then run it at 100%? Any motor that's reemed all the time will wear down quicker, especially if it's at it's limits. If you simply overbuild and treat it nice a motor can widthstand high HP numbers for a long time wich means your investment lasts longer, thus actually saving you money in the end.

Seeing as garrett just made it to 418 without headwork with methanol injection I'd think mild headwork should allow you to get to 350 without the methanol. You definately need standalone or some DIY work converting over to Z31 efi with a modified ECU tune. I personally wouldn't put that much power through a stock motor, but i'm paranoid about these things. I personally believe in the rule of thumb that if you want a 400hp engine to last 200k you need to build the bottom end for 800hp. All this info and more is waiting for you in the search feature. The only motor with more info on this site is the SBC conversion, but rest assured there's lots of info on the L motors.

Don't clutches have lead just like brakes? Talk about lethal food...

Can you tell me what you mean by this? Becuase CA doesn't have any "kit car" registration that I know of. There's the SB100, but that's not really written for kit cars. Yes people with kit cars use it, but the wording is designed to be for "custom built vehicles" in otherwords if it was delivered to your door it doesn't quality. Noble's can be bought pre-assembled wich is technically illegal since they'll be registered with a SB100. And the 15-20year thing. I'm curious where you picked that up, since even the SB100 could care less about year of the motor, they care more about what car it's supposed to look like (replcate) or if no car at all it's labeled as a 65'. Look bens1088, swap in a 280ZXT motor. It's by far the easiest swap out there. A 300ZX "twin turbo" wil never fit unless you feel like redesigning the engine bay. That motor is a DOHC with two turbos hanging off either side. It probly wouldn't fit stock by quite a bit. Don't even bother. Once you get the ZXT motor in you just need to get it legalised. If you wanted to you could just try to avoid it alltogether and see how long it takes for a smog shop to realise you car wasn't a turbo car. This might not be for a LONG time since these cars had that motor as factory option. This makes it very easy to get the swap legalised. If you need more info on CA smog laws PM me. CA laws might seem strict but thier complexity actually allows for several loopholes. Becuase of all this though it's become hard to aviod tickets from cops if you're in a high profile vehicle (say like an evo, sti, supra, honda, ect).
-
Exhaust maybe? If that's the case they should have been using turbos, now THAT could cook some dogs. So seriously.... how does a combustion based air pump cook hot dogs? I wanna know! And veritech, I agree with larry.

So does anybody want to know what a stock 280Z dyno's!!!!!
Gollum replied to a topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Actually those edelbrock numbers are pretty crap considering they've had HOW MANY YEARS to egineer those parts? Now, here's the fact though, all those crate motors have alot more potential that's untapped, so i'm not knocking them at all, I'm just stating that it has no real relevance to the subject. If you look at motors with the same setup the L motor is right on par with similar technologies. If you want 300NA hp out of an inline 6 buy a BMW motor. It's simple, it's all about air. The L motor isn't crossflow, and as braap on the board can teach you that doesn't matter all that much. BUT the head is short, with small ports that don't allow for much increase in size. Braap and others understand the limitations of the Z head much better than I ever will, but I'll guarentee almost all of the HP limits of the L motors comes down to the head. Sure the stock intake and exhaust might not flow perfectly but they're not the culprit, those can be modified or replaced alltogether. The head can't. And chevy owner has a plethera of heads to choose from. Any ford owner has many head options, even dodge guys get in on the action. EVO owners can buy cosworth made heads. Honda guys have good heads to start with and there are hundreds of people out there porting them. It isn't impossible for a B16 motor to reach 200hp on pump gas with high compression forged pistons and some good supporting head poloshing and port matching the intake/exhaust. So that's well beyond the 100/liter range you think it attainable with the L motor. I say don't press the issue much further if you admittingly don't understand all of it. If you wanna know more do as others here do and use the search feature. I don't mean to be rude, but I admit I don't know a ton about the L motors but at least I can show even you thier limits and limitations. -
Two words: Dream Theater Only one of the most important bands in modern progressive music. I'd make a video of ain't talkin' 'bout love but I'm not one to learn other guitarists solos usually. I just don't care to take the time to learn them. I'd much rather spend that little bit of time writing my own stuff. So that being said how about I do a video of the rythm and big-phil can come back and make a vid for the solo Oh, and you may not have to look like a rock star to play guitar but it sure helps the crowd get into it
-
If you think THAT'S a hard guitar riff veritech you should hear the new solo john petrucci album. Killer song after killer song. I should make some cool videos, but it wuold just be a buch of guitar stuff. Maybe I'll fire up the video camera at take some vide footage of some scooter stunts now that's hardcore m/

Or better yet a Z on ONE wheel. I'd bow down man. You need a looper though so you can jam with some groove. I like my jamman but the new boss unit is nice. Yea, i don't own a bike beucase i'd probly be doing stuff like that. I figure it's just better I don't even temp myself to go that route. I'd probly also be doing 100+ daily and I don't really want to pay for tickets. If you're ever in the SF area PM me and we'll jam.
-
i might go with this intercooler idea too. I'm at the junkyard alot anyways and I'm sure I could find one. Didn't look like too much of a challange either. Probly good for the amount of power I want too. Oh yea, and it's looking great man! Keep it up.

What he says is 100% true. We've still only really touched the tip of the ice berg in this thred. If you want more info, feel free to PM me or IM me at AIM: Gollumthesage

Ah yes you're right. It's 75' and bellow not 74' and bellow. Thanks for the correction. There's still uncertainty when you talk to refs on as to weather or not you'll have to smog the car if it's 75' or older when you legalise a swap from a newer vehicle. Most refs will just tell you to wait and see if you get a notice in the mail. This is one of the main reasons you wouldn't want to legalise a L28et swap in an older Z. There's just too many unclear laws.
-
Ok, swaps in CA... Fun fun fun. Well, it HAS gotten better in recent years and I'll try to give a run down. #1 thing. ALL CARS 75' or newer MUST be smogged FOREVER! Unless laws change this is concrete. #2 Any motor swap much have a motor from the same or newer vehicle #3 The motor must be from the same class (class A must be swapped with class A only. It's determined by vehicle weight, wich is 5000 pounds I believe. Motorcycles have thier own class) #4 The motor must NOT be a degrigation in smog equimpent. (If your car has an EGR the new motor must have an EGR. If your car is fuel injected the new motor must be fuel injected) #5 The motor must have all it's smog fittings in place in order to pass the inspection. So here's how it works. You finish a swap to go to the smog ref and they'll look over the car to make sure everything that needs to be there is there. If they have questions YOU'RE obligated to answer, they don't legally have to do research to make sure what you've done is stock/oem/legal/ect. Once they've checked off everything visually they'll do a smog dyno on it and make sure it passes the donor car's requirements. (worst law ever imo) If it passes they'll then make up a sticker that will go in your engine bay that as the VIN number, Make And Model, Engine Involved In Swap, and a bar code for smog shops to scan, I think that's it. Once a swap is completed you're car will be smogged every other year (same as everyone in the state) and you'll most likely be sent to a TEST ONLY station (as opposed to just any smog shop you find). Your car will forever have to pass the emissions test of said donor vehicle. ================================= Ok, now here's what I would recomend. Get a swap completed with a 100% stock motor. Don't be afraid of them regecting you the first time, it happens to most people. Listen to what they want you to do and DO IT. Come back and try again. Once you've gotten everything done they want done you'll have a legal KA swap. THEN find a CARB legal turbo swap. A turbo like this will say "CARB legal" on it or "50 state legal". Basically this means it's been tested by the C.A.R.B board to not be determental to emissions. This is a harder test for turbo kits but it is doable. It usually requires the company to provide EVERYTHING so that an owner can't customise it and change the air/fuel flow beyond what was tested by teh CARB board. This also means ALL, yes ALL boost controllers are ILLEGAL. This doesn't stop many people, becuase a smog tech would have 1, know what it is and 2, find it. There are hundreds of people in CA that just swap motors everytime smog rolls around. There are also countless people that remove illegal parts every other year for smog. I don't like to recomend illegal things on the net due to the nature of the media format. So i'm just gonna recomend geting the swap done legally, then making legal upgrades from there.

are you in a mad rush to just add performance
Gollum replied to grumpyvette's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Great topic grumpy, and I agree completely. I used to really be into the tuner crowd and would go to sears point to help out a friend who raced a 10 sec del sol (back in the early-mid 90's before the expostion in the industry). We ran into people all the time that seemed to know less about cars than they knew about walking. I just try to be nice and help out as much as I can without stepping on tows and leave them with a positive message. Many times just saying they're wrong is a bad way to to go about correcting them. I tend to try to say well "did you think about this" or "what about this aspect". This tend to not hurt so much as "well that upgrade was a waste of money". As long as there are cars there will be people that are ignorant about that yet try to have fun with them. It's that simple. Lucky us hybriz rocks m/ On a similar note I might get an early 240z in the next month or so. If I do i'll have to do TONS of research, since alot of my Z knowledge revolves around the S130. Oh well. Live and LEARN I say. -
The weight probly won't beat the SR20 even with it's turbo + FMIC, but the 1UZ will be weight farther back and down by compairson. Wich is much more worthwhile IMO. Just remember that the market support for the 1UZ is extremely small, so performance upgrades might end up being quite a bit DIY. There are transmission adapters out there, but only automatics bolt up the the motors expect for one really rare 5 speed SC400 and I don't think it was a US option, thus it's only found in australia (and maybe japan).
