TPS doens't control the mixture though, it controls transient changes. It's used for enrichment when the AFM or MAF wouldn't sense it quicky enough. If the TPS isn't adjusted correct I guess it MIGHT, just MIGHT be sitting on idle while going 15mph, but you'd notice drivability problems I'd imagine. You should be able to loosen the TPS and rotate it to play around adjusting it, and get a feel for how it works. I've never played around with a VG30E, so I can't help you there, but on my L series engines I normally keep the TPS almost all the way counterclockwise and I can get it while still idling correctly. Basically, you want it to idle normall, and then as soon as you push the throttle the revs should go up. If it's not adjust right then making that sudden throttle change will cause the engine to bog down before reving up. What's happening here is that the engine breathes the air immediately availible to it, but no fuel as been added because the AFM/MAF hasn't changed yet. Once the air has started moving due to the change in vacuum the AFM/MAF senses the change and the ECU adds fuel, and the engine starts to rev upwards. So unless like I said, the TPS is telling the ECU the throttle is either OFF or WOT while testing at 15mph, it shouldn't really affect the test. Now, if it were a full range TPS it might be a different story. But what it's there for is still the same, when harsh throttle movements occurte the ECU needs to be able to adjust before the other sensors pick it up.

Anyone else read the recent article on tomshardware about ray tracing? Looks like we might actually see ray tracing in video games in the near future!!! Sadly the software used today won't run on current Nvidia hardware. Not sure if it's actually a hardware issue or just driver issue. I'm sure if the industry goes that direction Nvidia will soon follow. I've really liked the Nvidia cars this last couple years, but it seems ATI's wealth of features nobody cares about paid off for a brief period. I used to be a huge ATI fan, I no longer care anymore really. Same with AMD/Intel. After the AMD/ATI merge it seemed like all their stuff went down the pot, but they're making come backs. I've lost all my bias though. I've built too many systems to care anymore, and there's always trade offs with going with either brand.

You don't NEED to change an O2 and a CAT at the same time, they're completely independant of eachother. But O2 sensors are recommended changing ever 30k miles, so that's about every other year for most people. They tend to be able to go a bit longer, but more than 50k is pushing it. Notice how the 25mph test passes is flying colors? Something is happening between 15mph and there. It might be the ECU going into closed loop and correcting the fuel mixture and activating the EGR. You're on the brink of solving it. I don't think it's going to be the ECU, but I'll still see if I can find one anyways.

Where have you heard this? Vista is all new from the ground up, all new kernel design. It doesn't even interfase with hardware in the same methods. I've read numberous in depth articles on vista, and not a trace of XP was left. It's much more about just "looks" and making XP look pretty. I don't know much about the next microsoft OS on the way, but I'd be willing to bet it'll run on the base architecture of vista, as it's already proven it's a good performer. But I agree about linux. Linux is the future in all honesty, and I've been saying that for a long time. Sadly the first OS we'll see to kill windows will probably be made by google.

Yea, but new operating systems from microsoft usually take at least 6-12 months to make a big splash anyways. Nobody will be considering changing right off the bat for the most part. People won't be talking about switching till late 2010, or 2011 I'm betting. I know that for myself I don't like to change OS until the first service pack is out. And general public doesn't like to change until it dominates what's seen in stores, which takes time.

And that's my point. "street car" if means staying legal, is too subjective of a term. But don't let our laws fool you... I still know guys who daily drive 9 and 10 second cars.

Regarding the T-56. Dont forget that this tranny isn't a single overdrive unit, it's a double over drive tranny. So 1st-5th aren't much different in gearing than most gear boxes. But the second overdrive isn't very usable unless you're using at least 3.545, or 3.7 and up. You can use this calculator to estimate RPMs at certain speeds. http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ I've personally never been in a LS1 powered Z but I've seen a few in person. Hey myron, can you give us a break down on the car's specs at the old weight? Is it in the S30 weights thread? Reason why is that's almost identical to the weight of my 75' which is stock regarding the chassis/body still with a L28ET.

Words of wisdom. Though CPUs are still getting faster and faster, you really NEED to have software capable of using multiple processors, and that software is still limited. And for the most part in most desktop apps you'll never see the difference between an old single core and the highest end quad core anyways. I'm still waiting for the 8 and 16 core cpus... Now, when you're zipping a huge 50GB file you'll really notice the speed difference. Or unpacking it for that matter. For multitasking it sure is nice to be able to tell a program to stick to one processor though. But that's getting kinda geeky now isn't it?

Let's remember the most important computer users though, the next generation. We're not seeing increasing amounts of seniors using computers compared to the growing rate of teens and preteens using computers. So where is microsoft going to focus. Apple has had huge market gains in the last 5-8 years and they're social status is growing in popularity. They've always been an IN crowd type of thing, and that fact is growing every day. I personally use vista almost every day and have no quarrels with it. Sure it takes a few moments to get reaquainted with everything, but the flow of the OS actually feels much better to me and it seems as though microsoft has been learning something about ergonomics. Also, if you do your homework, you'll find that the backbone structure of Vista is MUCH MUCH MUCH better in the long run. 5 years from now the best hardware on the market would be extremely limited in XP, where as vista will be fluid and able to handle the speeds seen by modern hardware. With a fast enough hard drive vista is able to boot much faster than XP with similarly installed programs. Vista chugs on old machines because data paths are so small, and you're moving so much data. On current BUDGET compters this isn't a problem. By the time SSD drives make a wide spread domination (which is only a few years out) people will STILL be using a vista based microsoft OS because the new OS is so modular and effient. Plus, let's not forget that even Apple's pretty OS's are always DOG SLOW when they first come out. Once they come out with a few patches that fixes some things. I remember when OS 10 came out, and on a G4 cube internet explorer would take about 10 bounces on the dock to open. After the first big update that was down to 3 bounces. Speed doesn't always come from how simple or ugly a OS is. It comes from optimization. In another 3-4 years we'll all be unwilling to give up Vista for the next OS. I find this cycle pretty humorous. I do feel bad though for the less computer literate, as it's like relearning how to walk every time which has GOT to be frustrating.

Sounds pretty close to my system actually. 3700+ San Diego Clocked to around 2.4 iirc (been a while since I setup my clock speeds) 1GB Corsiar XMS Low Latency DDR333 (clocked to DDR410) X800GTO2 Modded and clocked beyond X850XT PE specs. Was able to clock up to 650 on the core, and 620ish on the ram. Was hoping for more out of the ram but was most stable at 615. I feel that with a better cooler the core could take 700 on a regular basis. I was using a stock saphire cooler. I run a 4 drive raid and achieve a 95% efficieny on my sandrasoft benchmarks, so if you took the speed of a single drive and multiplied it by 4, then multiplied by .95 you'd have my drive speeds. Of course seek time and such don't benefit from the raid. Mobo is a gigabyte, can't remember the model. The DFI board I wanted had a bad batch that people were having issues overclocking with, killing CPUs. So I went with a model that at the time had been seening good results. From what I read DFI was doing a good job replacing the bad motherboards, I just didn't want to deal with the hassle. I spent about 1k I think on this "budget" gaming PC. It's hard to remember exactly, because the case, PSU, and backup hard drives I already I had. I think I spent around $650 on the mobo, cpu, ram GPU, and the 4 hard drives. That was quite some time ago.

Keep in mind that $380 was spent on core comonents only. There's also the hard drive, cd/dvd drive, case, psu, etc. $380 on those parts is a decent deal though, aux didn't overspend. Though I just pray that motherbaord lasts more than a year... It's only taken me a couple experiments with low buck motherboards to know not to attempt it. I'll just stick to the very few brands I trust.

I'd actually recommend running at least two spyware programs, not just one. None of the spyware programs will come even close to catching all spyware, so multiple programs is a must for decent coverage.

Well unfortunately here in california, USA, changing any of these parts would constitute the car not being street legal: Cylinder head Intake Exhaust Fuel Pump Fuel Injectors ECU Retuning the ECU Turbocharger Supercharger Pistons Crankshaft Camshaft etc Changing boost levels is illegal. Adding a turbo to a non-turbo engine unless certified by the C.A.R.B. is illegal, and few are certified. Any engine swap as long as the motor was found from a production vehicle in the USA from a newer vehiciel in the same weight class is legal. You must retain all the smog systems of the engine in order to maintain legal status. So hopefully you can begin to see that by your definition you'd be extremely lucky to ever see a "street car" Z do more than a 11 in the quarter mile. We're basically talking about BONE STOCK motors here. You get next to no modification before you're no longer a "street" car as it's illegal. That doesn't stop people around here from doing illegal modifications though...

Yea, I'd still build my own. You could easily still build that system for around the same price, if not slightly less and you can: A: Have a case that looks how you want B: Have the satisfaction of building it yourself and know how to upgrade parts when the time comes.

Great post, just snipped for space. I personally hate how people talk about "street legal"... what a bunch of smoke. First off, all states are different, and I guarentee you all those 600+hp "street legal" cars in the Summit catalog wouldn't be near legal in california, and very few states would consider them legal if they had to pass a smog inspection (not a test, just an inspection). So some people think that just because they get the DMV to give them plates then that makes then "street legal". The term is so convoluted that's it's almost pointless to even reconize. When I think "street car" I mean it's a certified grocery getter. And if A/C is required to make that then I guess my 14 sec 280Z doesn't quality... I personally don't care if a car as A/C or not to be a street car, because A/C isn't really all that needed in some areas of the world. My car also doesn't have interior, and it's noisy, and smells of gas after fillup... So am I now not a street car? Maybe by some standards. But I drive my car 60 miles a day and I like it just fine. To me it's more about what an owner is willing to put up with for the sake of driving the car. The guys out there with 2000hp "street cars" don't take them out very often because they're not particularly fun on the street and are kind of a pain to deal with. If the owner is willing to drive his car multiple times a week just for the sake of recreation, not just proving the fact he can drive it on the street, then I'd call it a street car. I know my definition isn't really thread changing, but it's how I've always seen the term "street" car. I know and have met guys that drive cars on the street with 1000+hp, and I think they're insane on some level. But they rotinely go out and race their cars on the street and track and love every moment of it. If Z-Gad drives his car for the pure joy of driving it around, then he can call it a street car imo. Thus far we've been primarly concerned with drag times, which though extremely relevant I'm sure, isn't the main focus for a lot of us here on the boards. If we want to talk about best lap times at certain tracks, cars like JohnC's "rust old datsun" can start to look like pretty great performers despite having less than 1/2 the power of many cars on this board.

Well, I was going to say something when I first saw the thread, but I know I've had my fair share of accidents (none of wich are actually recorded as me "at fault" but I know one I definately could have prevented, and I'd been driving 4 months at the time), and I learned from my mistakes. Nobody had to yell at me in order for me to get the picture, I also didn't have to share my revelation with the world. I was just not gonna say anything in hopes that he'd figure it out for himself. I think bjhines was a bit harsh, but it's what a lot of us are thinking. I for one don't have room to talk like he does. I don't have serious racing experience, but I know I could handle my car if need be, but I also know I'm smart enough to not put myself into a pickle like that. I don't think bjhines will hold a grudge against jeffer949, but like some of us, he just wants some form of proof that he's learned something from this and is going to take steps in preventing it from happening again. We all make mistakes. Idiocy is not trying to learn from them. We don't call an infant an idiot because they touched the stove... It's when they want to keep touching it time and time again that we wonder about their mental health...
